In my previous review years ago, I was definitely a bit harsh. They've stepped their game up considerably since then - between expanding the restaurant itself as well as the menu. I went this morning for brunch and it was definitely packed but with only a small wait for a table. Menu was extensive and priced reasonably which was much appreciated. Drinks were a bit pricey, but also huge so that made it worth it for sure. I wasn't feeling eggs this morning so I went with a Texas Toast grilled cheese with bacon and a side of hash browns. Happy with my choice, but I was hoping for a mix of cheeses instead of a solid bunch of melted American; my fault though for not asking. We were seated in the waaaay back which was sort of nice, but also caused the service to be incredibly slow throughout. All in all, I'd still come back again for more food. I'm glad I gave it another shot. read more

We attended a party here this evening. The food was outstanding. We had the marinated steal tid bits with chunks of blu cheese which was out of this world and extremely tender. The pasta Bolognese was outstanding and the pasta was nice and al dente! The chicken francescas was cooked and flaccid perfectly as well. This place is a lot of fun. It draws a nice crowd abs offers a fun pub atmosphere. There are plenty of TV's to catch your favorite teams too! And of course, great food wouldn't be great without the great service! It's only fair to make sure to give another five stars for patchogue ... Used to come here frequently and then stopped for a while... The past few times have been served by all new faces but everyone great. only name That comes to mind is caitlin I believe? Barmaid And waitstaff great. Always have to give credit where credit is due. have had superior service and food when coming to both this location and Lake Grove. Just some information for anyone considering this business for the first time, you will not be disappointed! One thing to keep in mind if you have children, even if they are of age to drink they are very strict with identification on weekend nights here. Understandable... Rowdiness... Liability... I've come to this establishment for years and the food is actually very good! However- had a bad experience the other night. We were told that the computer was down and it seemed that the Servers could not handle adding up the check without it. Honestly- a few tables were held captive because they wouldn't give us a manual bill total. We were willing to pay cash and we told we could not get a bill. Waited almost an hour for a bill & We were late to our performance at theatre. Very very upset ! This situation could have been handled differently. So definitely not one of my favorite bars to go to on a Friday or Saturday night - generally there is a cover which I could never ring myself to pay when there are literally a bunch of other bars just feet away on Main Street - but anyway today I came in with my mom for breakfast. One thing I can say is the idiot does a solid breakfast - our hostess was pleasurable and attentive. She offered us any seat in the house and was quick to respond if I needed anything and my server wasn't around. When checking in I saw a yelp deal for $20 for $30 worth of food - I asked our server to verify if it was valid and she was polite in admitting she wasn't sure and wanted to run it past her manager - turns out the deal worked!! So hell yeah! Go YELP. About half way through our dining experience a live musician set himself up. The music was very nice - however, it was EXTREMELY loud. It's a Sunday morning around 11am not a Friday or Saturday night. I would like to be able to hear the company I came with. It was I mean obnoxiously loud and we were seated in the other room, so that's saying something! The food was delicious as it always is - got ourselves a couple of eggs Benedict - one with corned beef hash and the other with a crab cake - both were bomb. Somehow someone jacked up the price of the Bloody Mary though - online menu reads $5 Bloody Mary's on sundays. Then physical menu in restaurant read 8.50 for Bloody Mary and then we get the bill and charged us 9.50 (made with regular house vodka) I don't get it. Not cool at all - pick a price and stick with it people. Also got myself a mimosa which was beautifully presented and pretty tastey. They had a raspeberry mimosa with puréed raspberry for an additional $3.00 - for a random total of 9.50 for a mimosa. I mean - nah couldn't bring myself to pay that much for puréed raspberries. Took 3 people and about 10 minutes for them to get us a to go box (it seemed like they were just sitting by the POS talking about something) Anyway service wise - ehh it was good Breakfast food - AMAZINGGG Menu prices - wtf? FYI there are two locations one in Oakdale and this Patchouge one. I accidentally went to Oakdale following GPS and thank God I left. Parking on Main St. with the amount of restaurants on this strip was challenging. I can't imagine the summer months. I would recommend getting out early or share ride service. There were 6 metered parking lots. We attempted to sit in the bar area but it was ram packed so we decided for table seating on the adjacent side. During the summer months they they offer outdoor dinning. After finally being seated we were able to start our order. Drink specials are during the week, don't expect anything on a Saturday night. My friend ordered the killer Sangria she said it was good. No plastic straws here, paper or nothing. I like my straws. Our server Stephen "19" was very nice and accommodating. As we took forever to order. The food came out fast which was good. I ordered the Texas Burger and Sweet Fries. The burger was cooked well topped with jalapeños which give it the extra kick that a burger needs. I had to eat it at home because I was so full from the Sampler. The Sampler had multiple appetizers but what stands out the most was the mini chicken tacos and fried pickles. Yes they were delicious. Sampler can probably serve up to 5 people I would give this place 3 stars as we were seated near a door that had a draft. However, our waiter was super attentive and patient. I was able to use my Yelp deal, yes Savings matter and one of my friend's benefited from the 5% cashback. The DJ played a variety of tunes as we watched people dance the night away. I'm going to be reviewing their brunch since I've had 3 good brunch experiences there now. Because it is not known as a brunch hotspot, you can usually squeeze in without any wait. I've gone on a Sunday with a group of 4 and a group of 8 with no problem. The menu has a decent amount of options and they always have some interesting weekly specials. Most importantly, the food is tasty! I can't comment on their dinner food options but I imagine they are also pretty good based on their daytime menu. As for the bar scene, I've only stopped in here for a drink once. It struck me as a typical Friday night bar scene - standing room only minus the restaurant portion and loud. Like I said, pretty much what you would expect from a Patchogue bar on the weekend. I've seen live music setting up there and I know that they also host some events during the week that would be worth looking into for a weeknight out. read more

Threw menus on the bar, ignored for 15 minutes, finally got her attention ( only 10 people in) ordered and burgers were so disgusting they were still mooooing( ordered very well done and they were still bleeding). Would have been 4 but the service was very slow. Went in for lunch. Ordered hummus appetizer. Took almost 20 minutes for it to come out. The app was good, the wait was unacceptable for a place where there was 1 other table beside us. Next had a wedge salad and a chicken noodle soup. Soup was very good. This was my second visit. The food has been great both times. It may have been the luck of the draw with the server or cook. She was very plesent but I think she was preoccupied with something else. I'll try it again just to rule out the possibility it was an isolated service issue. read more

Third review update. Came here to have a Sunday lunch after looking at the website that on Sundays they have $2-3 off craft beers and speciality cocktails. We were told by our waitress that no specials were going on, but when I showed her what was on the website she checked with her manager and we were given the deal. It's just odd that it's advertised no where in the physical restaurant, nor on the menus. It's as if it's a tactic to get people in the door and unless the customer knows, then it wouldn't be presented. However, the waitress did admit she was unaware, so perhaps it was more that. Still it's weird to not advertise in the restaurant the same as the website. I had a Cobb salad. It wasn't good. Like 2 slices of bacon on top of a bunch of shredded iceberg lettuce. And the sampler wasn't that great either, like re heated up Applebee's frozen food. We wanted to use a $20 for $30 deal through yelp and we couldn't because it couldn't be combined with the daily Sunday drink special that was going on (again, one that the waitress wasn't aware of). Yet, they have a special going on everyday of the week, so how would you ever use this yelp deal? I guess forfeiting the "get you in the door" deal. Every time I come here I'm really not impressed. There is a select few nice staff, but honestly in my opinion it just turns into a a crazy loud drunken place in the evening on the weekends. Definitely not my style. My wife and stopped in for a cocktail around 3:30pm on a Thursday afternoon. No seats at the bar so we sat in the empty dining room. A young man came over to our table and we said we would like to have a drink. He said you have to order food if you want a drink. I said we don't want food, just a drink please. He said if want a drink you have go to the bar. I said there are no seats at the bar. He said sorry. I said ok, we will go somewhere else. Patchogue has many establishments to choose from. We went to Aroogas, hostess said no problem just having a drink. I decided to order food anyway. The drinks were good , as well as the food. We enjoyed Aroogas, and spent $80. I guess the village Idiot are really idiots if they like to lose business. Ill never go back! P. S. I called the Village Idiot pub to speak to a manager and was told there was non available but they would call me back. They took my complaint and never called me back. But for the sake of Yelp, I will do my best. I vaguely recall friendly bartenders that thankfully served tasty glasses of water right away. There was weird neon lighting, and amazing mini chicken tacos from their late-night menu that were hot, crunchy, greasy, and cheesy. We had a disappointing meal at The Village Idiot tonight. The service was friendly and we were seated promptly. But 3/4 of the dishes we ordered were a letdown -- not enough cheese on the nachos, lobster wontons that didn't taste at all like lobster, a full-size salad when I asked for a side salad, very spicy crab cakes, and a soapy wine glass. Service was inattentive. I've been here before and had a decent time. Maybe just stick with a burger, when you go. read more

UPDATE 1/31/14!! *bells jingling as I tip my jester's cap to thee* I came here (against my will) a few weeks back for some drinks with friends and was taken aback by the changes since my last visit! Well done, V.I.P.!! If you compare my (pretty snarky) last review with this place now, you'd never think it was the same place. The seating is all wood (and comfortable), with a few bar tables for 4 as well as the addition of an ENTIRE dining room! There are TV's freakin EVERYWHERE (even in the dining area - so if you come out with family for a meal, you won't have to excuse yourself to the "bathroom" (aka sneak over to the bar) to see the score) as well as a fully-loaded electronic jukebox and small raised stage area near the front window for their live music nights. I'd heard the food was pretty good before, and on the first night we had some mini-tacos which really hit the spot. Today, I went with the standard bacon cheeseburger and was NOT disappointed in the least. While I ordered it medium, it was really med-well (bordering on well done) but as long as it's not mooing at me, I don't care. This burger actually gives Perabell (who won Best Burger on LI over the summer) a run for it's money, with a big juicy patty, nicely cooked bacon, and (my favorite) a BIG soft/thick bun that didn't get too soaked through OR was too tough to eat. Owners, please take note: those buns are great! They serve crinkle cut fries - which aren't usually my choice - but were cooked really well and came pre-peppered (a plus in my book). Some people next to me ordered theirs even crispier, and that was the way to go. The beer list is NOTHING like the old joint (lots of craft brews, and about 10 taps worth of em!) and my beer was poured very nicely. The only thing I wish, was that they had some lunch specials. My burger/beer/cola came to $19, which is totally appropriate but I came in looking for something for lunch and a smaller special would've been even better. I took a star off for that, but you can go ahead and add one if you'd like. I hear they may have the best breakfast in town (rumor has it from a discussion with some locals about em over at Hoptron) and I'll have to check it out if I'm ever in Patchogue that early. The rest of the menu is pretty good pub food, and some guys got wings that I could smell the hot sauce on from all the way down the bar. Way to step up the game, Village Idiot. You're matching the up-and-coming Patchogue Village Renaissance quite well. I take back everything from my old review (gladly)! You've become a "true" pub worthy of the name. Stopped in for a few drinks this weekend. I thought my friend was joking when he told me "the breakfast here is great". The next morning after suffering a massive hangover I decided to check it out. The breakfast was on point. Started off with a great hangover drink.. Orange/Ginger fizz(?). Which was kinda like a mimosa with ginger. For breakfast I couldn't decide between Eggs benedict and Sausage biscuits in sausage gravy. So I went ahead and ordered both. Both dishes were excellent. The biscuits seemed to be made in a tray and cut out in squares. That did not take away from them at all. They were really fucking good. And the gravy was delicious. Reviews seem really mixed here. Regardless of what I've read.. my one breakfast experience will keep me coming back. Its totally worth checking out if you are questioning it. read more

I want to take a moment to outline the truly horrendous experience I had here recently. We attended this dive for a ranger game and the service was truly atrocious. Our bar maid seemed to need a shower and had a grease head of hair. She smelled of pure filth and body odor mixed with cheap CVS perfume. It was repulsive to say the least. The service was as slow as molasses. She even brought drink garnishes over to the table with her bare hands. She was hammering us to order more stuff even though the check was well into the hundreds of dollars. We were taking her table up because we were watching the game. The bathroom was like wading around in a kiddie pool filled with urine. The toilet was chained up (yes chained up) and the bathroom was covered in bodily fluids. I had piss all over my shoes. The kicker came when because of the mess we made we were told "don't ever come back here again." I wasn't aware that I had to politely place my wing bones on the dish after eating them. No problem. I will never come back just like they asked. And I will tell the 10 other guys I come with regularly never to come back as well. Keep up the great work. Can't wait for this place to close down or be sold to someone who can learn to treat customers right and who will invest in a mop to clean up the rancid piss all over the bathroom. This was a great day with our family. The waitress Kaitlin was friendly and kind to the 10 of us right from the beginning. The chicken wings were amazing and hamburgers were all done right, and our beer was chilled perfect. My children are asking when can we go back what day is Kaitlin there. BAR: this is a good bar to come too if you're looking for something casual and cheap. It's a little bigger than the other bars on the street which is nice too but it still gets pretty full on a busy weekend night. If you order food you can sit at one of the tables in the restaurant part. RESTAURANT: breakfast was good here. They have decent menu and portion sizes. I ordered a veggie omelet and it was delicious, except it had onions in it when I asked for none. But no big deal I just picked them out. Ordered a mimosa and ask for a splash of cranberry juice in it, this was delicious. Also another mimosa that was ordered at my table had a little tiny champagne bottle in the big mug, pretty cool. Stopped in for breakfast on Saturday the 13th of August at around 9:00AM. The pub was nice and cool, which is great because this heat-wave stinks. I really wanted to try their French Onion Soup, but it was to early in the day. Breakfast was great! French toast was great, as were the eggs. No complaints about the bacon. Pancakes, chocolate chip, were also great. Down-side, I very much dislike margarine, and that's what they give you with the French toast. I like real butter. I do not care about saturated fat. Also, the coffee mug was over-filled, no room for cream. Both issues were non-issues and I could have asked for butter and dumped some of my coffee out, but I was to hungry and to thirsty. Overall, this place was really great. I think our server's name was Nora. Very nice, and fast. Checked up on us at the right times. read more

Had our first experience here. We were there for lunch. I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak. My guest ordered the Grilled Cheese, she chose swiss. Both came with fries, our choice. My Philly was good. A little too salty and oily. Nothing like the original from Philly PA. But good enough. The Grilled Cheese was also OK. The fries were also a little too oily and not salted enough. The waiter was Great! Very friendly and accommodating. The dinning area is separated from the bar area, so you can choose were to sit. there are many TVs for your entertainment, or distraction as you choose. They offer many specials from prix fixe menu, specialty drinks and game night deals. Overall a nice place to spend a few hours!! One note, If you park on Main St, Montauk Hwy, you need to pay for parking. I did not know that and got my first parking ticket ever in my life!
