The Tavern is a pretty good mainstay in the Three Chopt area. It's no frills, reasonably priced, and overall tasty. I've been a few times but only once recently. For an app, we split the mac and cheese bites - soo good. Meals-wise, I ordered the ranch salad and added steak, and my boyfriend had the shrimp burger. I requested my steak as medium well, and it came out a bit bloody and very red. I did send it back to be cooked slightly longer, but then it came back extremely well-done and pretty rubbery, so I guess I should've just dealt with the medium rare state. Medium well to me means slightly pink but not bleeding. Noted for the future, I'll have the ranch salad again but not add protein! read more

Thursday 8/8/24 3:30pm Me and a friend decided to eat here today. Upon arrival the first thing I noticed was no customers. But, it's also a slow time for restaurants (2-4pm). Per both of us the Second thing I noticed almost immediately was it was FREEZING inside. So much so I literally was uncomfortable and hurried to eat some of my food just so I could hurry up and get out to defrost. Otherwise, the atmosphere was good. Family friendly, friends hangout or just grab a bite by yourself. Waitstaff seemed to work as a team and everyone was nice and friendly. I ordered the country melt which was really good except I didn't care for the herbed alouette. I also substituted my French fries for the beer battered onion rings at a whole $5 up charge. They were good though. My friend ordered the I Love Chicken melt, (chicken salad). He said it was good as well. First time at the Tavern. Got seated as I entered. First was very cold . The waitress was very attentive and always smiling. So I ordered 6 wings and wanted to try the Shrimp burger. Wings came quickly looked great asked for buffalo they had a-little drizzle of sauce but over all we're good could have used more sauce or on the side. Then comes the Shrimp burger I looked at it and was looking for the beef (burger) it was just minced shrimp made into a burger I guess. Not what I was thinking. Thinking a burger with a couple of shrimp on top. So I tried it took two bites and was not my thing. The waitress seen I wasn't eating it and ask to take it back . I'm not one to send food back but she insisted so I just ordered a burger. Can't really rate it could be a favorite for someone else. Paying the check took a few to get my change back. Then I was handed big bills which meant to give a tip had no choice without waiting again for change so I left $20 tip on a $32 check and left. Menus looked good I just picked wrong thing. Four of us went to dinner here around 8 pm on a Saturday. They were fairly full not no line at the door and open tables/booths. We were seated fairly quickly and that is when the good points stopped. It took quite some time to get our beer order delivered, but that was nothing compared to getting the food. OMG. We ordered straight of the menu with no changes- two chicken fajitas, cheesesteak and a quesadilla. Over an hour later and after two groups that came in after us had food, we asked the waitress if she knew what was going on with the order. The Tavern is one of those places that have been there for a long time but I have never tried it. It's a very nice neighborhood restaurant. I was really in the mood for a good steak when visiting my daughter but she didn't want to go to a chain restaurant. I should have stuck to my guns. The first New York strip that I was served was overcooked and very tough. When asked by the server if everything was to our liking I mentioned that the steak was a little overdone. She graciously said that they would replace it. The second was medium rare as I liked but still full of gristle and tough as shoe leather. My daughter's pasta was to her liking and the Caesar salad was lovely. So if we go back I will not order a steak. read more

I don't know how long this place has been here, but I'd guess since the '80s, and nothing about it has changed since then, decor wise. It seems like everyone who was there when we were were regulars. Service was pleasant, relaxed and familiar. Food came out super fast. I got the crabcake sandwich with fries and "greens." Greens are not collard greens, but spring mix tossed in balsamic vinaigrette. The crabcake was not all that great, but it wasn't awful. My mom got a bacon cheeseburger with fried egg, french fries and mixed vegetables. The vegetables were perfectly al dente, which was unexpected for this kind of place. First time coming here after an event my friend and I attended and were just looking for a quick bite. Came across this location on Yelp and decided to give it a shot. It's in a tucked location on the corner of Glenside Dr and Patterson Ave. Parking was pretty easy and we walked in and chose to sit in a booth. It was darker in there than I wanted it to be, but my eyes easily adjusted. (Being a new mom, I often need more lighting nowadays haha.) Our server was great and allowed us to sample a few of their featured beers. They had a lot of food to select from and I ended up deciding on a cheeseburger with onion rings. I didn't see Cheeseburger listed on the menu so I had to order the hamburger with cheese on it. The burgers came out at a reasonable time and allowed my friend and I to chat and catch up. The burger was good and the service was great. It just want not the spot for me. Definitely a neighborhood spot for the locals and it makes me miss living in the city (back in my "single" days haha). We generally visit The Tavern every few weeks. Back in the Spring we had Chicken Marsala and it was wonderful. We ordered it again tonight. When the order came out it was not a Marsala sauce at all, but a tomato based sauce with lots of onions. We told the waitress that something was wrong and she insisted that this was the way it always is prepared. While eating the disappointing excuse for what we had ordered, we pulled up Chicken Marsala recipes on Google. All were with a delightful Marsala Sause. None had tomato sauce or onions. The waitress offered to get the kitchen manager so we could show him what Chicken Marsala looks like, Instead of speaking to us, he refused to come out, insisting via the waitress that we were wrong. To be clear, we were not asking for a reduction, simply trying to teach the cook what real Chicken Marsala is. Beyond the main dish being WRONG, both baked potatoes and vegetable medleys were undercooked. When a customer has a verifiable and legitimate concern, ANY decent restaurant will address it, but neither the kitchen manager nor the waitress seemed to care. It will be a good while before we venture to darken their doors again. read more

Had a negative meal experience. Called the owner to politely discuss food burnt 2x and covered with cheese 3rd try & I have a dietary cheese restriction. His reaction was essentially - take your business elsewhere. "Not sure we can ever satisfy you." Really? I had an issue with the waiter reaching over our food to refill a drink, but that's what they do at their dinner table. Not mine though. What a treasure of a hidden spot. My wife and I always hit the Tavern when visiting Richmond. One of the best ribeyes anywhere, and we travel all over the nachos we get the BBQ and chilli added great flavor. Crabcakes are delicious! And new on our list is the pastrami sandwich. read more

Another #COVID19 win! My husband and I are trying a different locally owned restaurant each week and this one was a definite success! The friendly server on the phone made ordering easy and quick and brought the food out to us. My crab cake sandwich was FULL of delicious and flavorful crab! I ordered their balsamic greens as a side and loved every bite. My husband tried what another Yelper had called the best cheesesteak sandwich in Richmond and they were right! Wanted to love it, but was underwhelmed. Love the ambiance and the neat screened - in porch seating. For a "pub" is wasn't very loud and though they were getting busy, it didnt feel crowded. A young awkward hostess greeted us, we could barely hear her speak she was so soft spoken. Young kid waitor who was a bit impersonal (makes me crazy when a waitor brings the check and says nothing then walks away). Nothing on the menu excited us, one of us ordered a Greek salad, the feta wasn't very good quality, it was a pretty but average salad. I got the cheese steak, too much bread, and bread that was not fresh at all. The filling was fair. Onion rings were great, however, nice presentation and great taste. This neighborhood bar vibe is working for the tavern with its hometown feel, it's perfectly nestled right off Patterson Avenue. I stopped in here for lunch on a Saturday around noon. Busy but not packed, I grabbed a seat at the bar. I was greeted immediately by the bartender and handed menus. I was happy to see coat hangers behind me for my purse and jacket, a simple measure to ensure customers are comfortable. The menu itself is typical tavern food with burgers, salads and the like. Unfortunately their menu is limited with vegan or gluten free options - so if you are looking for those, you will be quite limited on your options. I ordered the California veggie burger (comes with a side salad) and my companion ordered the cheesesteak sandwich with a side of fries. While sitting at the bar, a fellow diner enjoyed a rather large hummus and pita bread plate with olives and other essentials - this is a plate to share for sure. The beer is a good array of local favorites but no worries, they have quite a few options on tap- and a cider by Bold Rock stay available for gluten free diners. When lunch arrived, I was quite impressed. The California veggie burger was huge. It seemed to be made in house (mix of soybeans, carrots, broccoli and peas) and it was delicious. Topped with lettuce, tomato and raw purple onion, it was very filling. The side salad that comes with the plate was a great blend of artisan lettuces and arugula that was a perfect side to the burger. Impressive. My companion that ordered the cheesesteak was quite impressed with the amount of meat on the hoagie bun- which was toasted. He got provolone cheese on top and said it was quite good. While the fries are nothing special or unique, he did say they were good. Overall, a decently good place to eat food and watch the game. However, heed my warning: if there is a game going on at University of Richmond, this place will be busy. I overheard staff talking about busy the place gets right before game time.
