Been hearing great things about this place and finally made it over here for the chicken fried steak. Pan fried is the best n my opinion. This is a deep fried. I brought a friend and former co-worker here. We regularly round with for BBQ about once a month, trying out either new places or ones either of us has been to. This time it was a shot in the dark for both of us, with only the recommendations of fellow Yelper James F. to guide us. It's definitely not your father's BBQ joint. It's pretty upscale with a large bar area and very comfortable seating (both booths and tables). I ordered the three meat plate, which is really enough for two hungry people. Half of it went home with me. I came for the boudin. And I wasn't disappointed. I liked it. I wasn't quite as crazy about the brisket or turkey, however; it just didn't have a tremendous smoked flavor--almost like city slicker BBQ. I shared a sample of my friend's jalapeno-and-cheese sausage. While good, I felt it was a little too heavy on the cheese--so much so that I couldn't tell at times if it was sausage or cheese in a casing. The sides are pretty much hit and miss. The beans with brisket were a definite hit. The comeback coleslaw? I won't come back for it. Not my style. What really sealed the deal was our waiter. He was super attentive, ready to provide us with anything we needed, refilling our drinks frequently, and offering each of us go cups. He served generously and we tipped generously. Came here last weekend. First things first, service here is impeccable. It's not your typical BBQ joint where you order at the window. They've got plenty of booths and tables to go around. I ordered the pork ribs, brisket with a side of grits and corn casserole. The pork ribs were outstanding. Fatty, juicy, and had a really nice bit of spice in the rub. The brisket was delicious. Had a great smoke (if you like smokey brisket, get it) and was super tender. The grits could have been spicier in my opinion. That corn casserole though.... amazing. You've gotta get it. Now. I did not enjoy their take on boudin. I'm got family in Louisiana and I'm a Houston transplant. Gotta say, it just wasn't doing it for me. The crawfish addition was nice though. I've been going to stiles switch for years and the switch is not stiles switch that's for sure. The service is very lackluster more like I'm taking time out of their day to help me. Food was alright but nothing like what I've come to associate with stiles switch. We went for brunch and they were out of several things because they ran out of biscuits I asked if they could possibly sub a biscuit for maybe Texas toast for the Benedict since we drove pretty far just for that and was abruptly told no. No I'll check with the kitchen nothing just a flat no with 0 effort. What I did order was fairly bland and overall a waste of a 30min drive. Another evening post TASSP conference and decided on some good Texas BBQ, I called a buddy from Houston and he recommended this place. It was a long drive from downtown Austin to eat here. When you arrive it's a large mall area with many franchise restaurants and stores. Parking is an issue if you're driving a large SUV. You enter and wait to be seated. The dinning room is open and has a Western style all around. There were few clients and it took a while to be attended by my server. I asked her to recommended what they were known for at Switch and so I ordered the ribs, corn and jalapeño sausage. The bathrooms are located at the far end and are attractive and well kept. My server was friendly and that is were it plus ends. The ribs and sausage were warm and really not much flavor. First of all I am really kind of a BBQ snob, I have been to most of the top tier pitmasters around Texas and I can honestly say the brisket I had today was one of the best I have ever had. Management needs some training in customer service. My daughters and I waited nearly an hour for a take out order that we were told would take 20-30 minutes. We watched as people who came in after us received their orders and left. When I expressed frustration to the manager, Ryan, he told me that they were slammed (there was almost no one there at two in the afternoon and no one ahead of us for a take out order) and they went through each order one by one. I said we've sat at the bar for an hour. There really aren't many people here and the people who came in after us got their orders before we did. He said that was irrelevant and he wasn't going to argue. Clearly there was some sort of mix up with our order that pushed it back and made I take twice as long as it was supposed to take. I was surprised that someone presumably trained in hospitality couldn't just acknowledge whatever happened and apologize. We weren't even mad but he came out ready to argue. Wonder if that technique is effective for him often. Seems like a restaurant like Switch would have a manager who could just say we really apologize for the extra long wait. read more

My husband was so excited to introduce me to this place. The menu was very eclectic and I was excited for the new adventure. I being the wine consumer that I am ordered a glass of Cabernet, nothing fancy. However after half our appetizer was gone and my husband had fully consumed his entire diet soda, I could see at the bar, my lonely glass of cab. I looked for our waiter and I could see him , engulfed in paper work standing at a cook counter. I finally had to wave and yell to get his attention. The 2nd glass an associate waiter assisted. The third glass once again sat at the bar. I man wearing a gray dress shirt, appeared to be the manager. I asked him why were the waiters so consumed with paper work and not able to provide great customer service to us the customers. He said they were completing a quiz. I replied " why are they doing a stupid quiz, instead of waiting on customers?" He immediately with a hostile tone, replied " IT's NOT A STUPID QUIZ, I spent a lot of time making it!" I apologized for calling it stupid, however felt that giving the employees a QUIZ during customer hours was totally unacceptable! Our poor server Lucas was extremely apologetic, and stated he had no control over his bosses expectations. The food quality was not to expectation, maybe ok for a fast food restaurant, however costing over $100 dollars it was no where near the quality! As for our waiter, we tipped him graciously, as for the boss, he needs to find a new career. Customer service is NOT his forte! Stick to boy-scouts, leave food service alone! The Diablo sandwich's melt-in-your-mouth brisket was otherworldly good, as was the peppered sausage, but the gross ballpark nacho jalapenos completely ruined all that was good about the meats served on a fresh buttered bun. It can't be that hard to roast fresh peppers to serve on a $14 sandwich. Fries are well seasoned and the right level of crispy. It was Easter Sunday and I was honestly surprised at how dead it was. We were seated by the unfriendly host who also looked to be the manager or GM. Once seated, it took 15 minutes for anyone to come greet us and take drink orders. Unacceptable. We got to the point where we wondered if we were supposed to order at the bar or? During our 15 minute wait, we because very excited to get some Easter brunch! Bbq Benedict, biscuits and gravy, perhaps a brisket mash with a side biscuit. Yum. Finally our server comes to take drink orders. They're out of cider and fountain coke. Okay, so we modify our drink orders. She then takes our food order and only tells us once we've ordered that they're out of biscuits.... on Easter Sunday?? How does any restaurant let themselves be out of something like that when they specialize in brunch on that particular holiday?? Why were we not informed what they were out of once we were seated by the manager? That eliminated half of the brunch menu and everyone had to decide on something completely different. We decided to order when drinks came out. It no joke took 15 minutes for these drinks to come out. At this point we've been here a half hour and just received drinks. When it comes time to place our order, one person in our 4 person group was still a little undecided. The waitress had the audacity to ask the rest of the table if "he's always this indecisive" - really?! You're out of everything we want and you those words really leave your mouth? We finally got our order in and food started coming to the table. The only reason they're getting 3 stars is the food. It was very good. Stuffed jalapeños, corn casserole, brisket, smothered cabbage, shrimp and pulled pork po boy were all excellent. I had the chicken fried steak and found it to be very, very bland. I understand being busy on a holiday but given the state of the restaurant when we arrived, there was no excuse for the slow, miserable service we were provided. The waitress was not informed of their inventory and almost lost the table. I was honestly surprised that the manager didn't come to the table to offer any sort of apology. The food here is fantastic! It's expensive, but given the location I imagine their space costs them a lot. My favorite is the pulled pork. Their bbq sauce is delicious! I wish they would be a little more generous with the sauce. A tiny little cup with a half pound of meat is not enough. Their potato salad is fabulous!! I could make a meal with just that. All things considered and combined, this was our favorite BBQ restaurant that we got to try while in Texas. The staff was awesome. We had pitmaster Bill invite us into the pit room and answered all of our questions. Our server, Heather, was friendly, bubbly and enthusiastic. We even requested her on our second trip. We had lunch the first time and brunch the second time. The meats were fantastic. The gravy on the chicken fried steak was amazing. Smoked chicken wings are a must try. Well we tried this for the first time on Mother's day. My wife wanted to try it out as we had seen it coming to Sky Cinema a couple times so she picked it out for Mother's day. This restaurant really was ho hum. We had 2 kids and 7 adults. The two kids ordered pancakes/bacon off the brunch menu. We got 1 rib plate, 1 brisket plate, a 2 item plate with ribs and brisket, a 1/2 chicken plate, a turkey plate, frito pie, and gumbo. First let me say the service was just OK. I think the waitress was trying hard but something just seemed off. She came and filled tea but missed all the empty soda at the table. Then instead of coming back to get the sodas (which she saw) she went back into the kitchen so my brother-in-law went and filled it himself. She saw him do it and mentioned 'hey you beat me too it'. Well it wasn't that hard. I think she really tried and was really friendly but I am not sure why it was so slow. She did great filling teas etc... but struggled with the sodas. I am not sure if it is training or lack of help. Second when you have little kids they need their food to at least come out with everyone else's food or before. This is pancakes and bacon it isn't that it has a lead time. Their food came out last by a long margin. Kids don't deal well when everyone else is eating and they have to sit and wait. Finally when we were completely done the waitress cleared out the table one plate at a time and didn't bring our checks until the very end. It took probably 20 minutes for us to get the check after we were done eating. Let's get to the food. When you go out for BBQ it is costly. I don't want to spend that kind of money unless the meat is stellar. Since we have so many choices in the Austin area for stellar meat the sides matter too. I would rate the meat as average at best and the sides were pretty but most were disappointing. I'll break it down by each item. Brisket - Was decent but not stellar. Blacks on Barton Springs is better but this was probably slightly better than Rudy's. Pork Ribs - There was very little meat on the ribs. They were very peppered and next to no smoke flavor. I would say Rudy's blows away these ribs. Turkey - My daughter liked it but she isn't very picky :) Chicken - Was juicy but next to no smoke flavor. (Isn't this BBQ?) Gumbo - My father in law actually loved this. But before you think great read the portion size comment below. Mashed Potatoes - No gravy so if you serve mashed potatoes with no gravy they have to be really amazing. These weren't and needed gravy. Everyone who ordered the mashed potatoes wish they had gotten something else. Cole Slaw - Down right bad. Super colorful but had no tang at all to them. It tasted like cabbage and mayo. Cheddar Jalapeno Grits - Flavor was good but not amazing. Micklethwait has way better grits. Cucumber Tomato Salad - Decent one of the better sides Pickles - Great the best side on the plate! (pretty sad about this one) Finally let's get to the portion sizes. The single brisket plate had 3 slices of brisket. Pretty good not bad. The chicken plate was ok too. The sides were WAY TOO SMALL of a portion. Now with the ribs the two plates with ribs got 2 ribs. The problem is there was next to no meat on the ribs so the person with the rib only plate left hungry. Then the person with the brisket and rib plate got one slice of brisket and 2 ribs with next to no meat so that was disappointing. Then to top it off the gumbo. It was a super small bowl of gumbo for I think $15 dollars. On top of that the potato salad was in the gumbo so 50% of the dish was potato salad in the gumbo. We all thought this was a very neat idea and the flavor was good. The problem is when you get such a small serving and half of it is potato salad for $15 that is crazy. There were maybe two small pieces of brisket in there and a piece of sausage. Utterly ridiculous. Usually I don't write reviews like this. This place needs to seriously rethink their strategy. I am not complaining about the cost because it is slightly trendy in a new area but the value just isn't there. If you're gonna dress up BBQ the food has to be good and the portions have to be decent. Figure it out. This place was just Meh and for the cost wasn't worth it. read more

After being an Austinite for over a decade, I only have one BBQ rule: If they don't have a presence or sister store in Lockhart, don't go. I broke this rule for Switch, and I'm a better man for it. Switch is a permutation of Stiles Switch, with roughly 90% of the menu devoted to Texas style BBQ and the remaining 10% comprising cajun or creole influenced dishes. Now if I'm honest, the only reason we ended up here was because Pious was closed for Summer break. They do that? Apparently. The decor is roomy and modern, without being too try-hard. They have electric jellyfish on tap, which is a great start, though I suppose it's become ubiquitous after winning heaps of awards. The only downside of the entire meal was the "hye" fashioned. While it looks incredible on paper (garrison brothers bourbon, a mezcal infused cherry, bitters, etc), in practice it was an absolute sugar bomb. We went for brunch, I had the Texas toast sandwhich with damn near everything on it (brisket, bacon, egg, tomato) while the wife had the brisket hash. The common theme? Excellent brisket that absolutely made both dishes. Great crust, a deep smoke ring, incredible flavor. (Side note: why is it so difficult to find truly great brisket in Austin???). Switch made a great call on the Texas toast, going for slightly sweet instead of garlicly, which I thought was a solid play for a brunch item. I have to award a bonus star to any place that calls their family platter "The Trough." Sorry, that's a rule. The tab came out to just under $50, though without the hye fashioned, we would've been well under $40, and we both left completely stuffed, which is a real value. read more

I'm by no means a food critique... just someone spoiled to Austin's vast amount of great food. We left disappointed. Overall, I give them a D+. Boudin - overly seasoned/too salty; did not taste anything close to Cajun food. Super spicy doesn't necessarily equal Cajun. Go anywhere in Louisiana & learn what good boudin tastes like. Brisket - super fatty. Enough to make me & my fiancé start feeling stomach pains before we had even left dinner. Seems like it had been sitting out all day. Cabbage - boring, bland. Nothing to be desired. Cucumber tomato salad - Meh. Pork ribs - just bad. Cajun pot pie - It was a gooey, gut bomb. Marie Callender would be ashamed... Margarita - about 5oz. of straight sweet & sour mix. And for $10? Rip off. Service wasn't great... all food came out cold even though we were 1 of maybe 2 tables eating there. Atmosphere is sterile. Seems like they tried for a rustic theme but have you ever seen a bright, white barn in your life? Can't imagine anyone wanting to hangout by the lifeless bar either. Food is bad & overpriced. The only positive thing I can say is the banana split desert was good. Then again, you can't mess up ice cream... Hope they can work out the kinks, start over with some recipes & really focus on the food. Austin's food scene is tough enough as is... not to mention the competition just down the road in Driftwood. This is somewhat of a new store. Plus, I never heard anything about Switch BBQ in the past. I pretty much thought this was a run-of-the-mill family-owned chain BBQ joint. I first visited switch a couple months ago and perhaps it was because of the medication I was on but I really didn't think it was anything special other than the cabbage dish, which was excellent. A week or so ago, I visited them again. Wow. What a difference a month makes. The barbecue brisket was excellent. I really, really like the sides here as they aren't only the standard cooked beans and mayonnaise based coleslaw you see everywhere else. They have a really nice tomatoes and cucumbers salad which can be one side and as I mentioned the southern cooked cabbage with ham is also very good. So now it's one of my new favorite eating places! He was in town for the weekend, does NOT share my love for rustic dives, & wanted BBQ. He has to go to restaurants that are clean,it's a huge deal to him. I knew that there's ties here to Austin's Stiles Switch BBQ so I let my curiosity get the best of me & we went out to check it out. The Q is on par with most BBQ places in Central Texas. Lots of Stiles Switch influence here. But, this location is more about fusion BBQ. So you could get a traditional 2 meat, 2 sides plate if you want, or you can order bunch, burgers, chicken fried steak, etc. What impressed me the most was the "Rajin Cajun" crawfish-stuffed boudain. I didn't expect them to have boudain & most local examples I've tried were meh. Got a mixed 2 meat plate with Mac n cheese and sweet corn casserole. The meat was really moist and enjoyed the pickles on the bread. The corn casserole hit the spot but the Mac n cheese wasn't good. My son gave me one of his ribs. These are excellent with a little spice baked into them. They brought out some really dark hush puppies that went well with the dipping sauce. read more
