In a town awash with chain restaurants and Mexican places (nothing wrong with Mexican food but variety is the spice of life), it is nice that we have Solfood Kitchen. I had previously gone to this charming place for lunch but joined my book club here for dinner on a Wednesday night. When I first heard about Sol I had my doubts as restaurants that lean vegetarian/vegan are not my fave but the vibrant flavors and interesting menu choices made me a believer. We went early (5:30) and there were only a few other tables filled but people kept coming and it got busy which gives me hope they will stay around for a minute. We ordered a few appetizers to share; the teriyaki wings, plantain empanadas and the roasted edamame. One of our members also ordered a bottle of saki for the table which I was ambivalent toward as saki is generally a bit harsh to me. Not this saki though. Our server suggested it and it was delicious. We took the bottle with us with plans of getting some for an upcoming beach trip when none of us will have to drive home. The appetizers didn't disappoint! The empanadas were flaky and the plantain filling was so good. The wings were huge and tasty. There were two left that I took home to DD who declared them exceptional and demanded to know when I was going to take her. The best of the three was the roasted edamame. I could have easily eaten the bowl myself! Don't choose them if you don't like garlic though. For our entrees my friends ordered the pimento cheese served with scallion pancakes, the "big dill" turkey sandwich, and the plantain tacos. All declared their food delicious. Mama and I shared the apple cider marinated chicken breast served on horseradish mashed potatoes and served with roasted vegetables. We were glad we decided to share as the portion was generous and sharing let us have room for dessert. One member declared she wanted her very own serving of chocolate peanut butter mousse but the other four of us shared. She probably had the right idea as it too was a home run. In other reviews I noticed some complaining about not having enough choices but I much prefer a single page menu over a massive book menu. The bigger the menu the more likely you're getting something pre-made and straight out of the freezer! I also didn't mind waiting although I didn't feel the wait was excessive. Our server was lovely and very solicitous of our needs. As we were leaving the chef/owner came by to thank us for coming in. She was super nice and we were happy to share how pleased we were with our dining experience. She said they have musical brunch on Saturdays and the next one would be live jazz. Amazing new restaurant in Surry Center. A healthy take on fine dining, the restaurant offers regular, vegetarian and vegan options. We opted for 3 small plates and one large plate. The Kimchi Pimento Cheese was a great start and had just a hint of Kimchi which paired great with the Cranberry Ginger Sparkler. Next was the highlight for me, the King Oyster "Scallops". This is the essence of a great vegan dish... I think I liked it better than the real thing! Last of the small plates were the Veggie Empanadas. A wonderful flakey crust with all vegetarian ingredients. Finally , we had the Apple Cider Chicken. Chicken was juicy, vegetables on point, and the apple cider sauce wasn't too sweet. I have a milk and gluten allergy. I am accustomed to limited options, being disappointed, and risking an allergic reaction when eating out. So, I was unexpectedly blown away by how delicious the food was. I had the Banh Mi Sandwich with chicken. The food was fresh with quality ingredients, bursting with flavor AND I didn't feel sick after eating there. Win! Win! Win! I loved the bun. It was soft and I couldn't even tell it was gluten-free. It was nice not to have to sacrifice flavor for safe food. I will definitely be eating here again the next time I'm in Augusta. The inside was so cute . Recommend 100%. The food vegan and vegetarian options. The flavor was there for the tacos. The soup needed something it just tasted really strong of curry. I didn't have a picture of the drinks but they were a good balance between strong and juice. It's more on the floral side for sure. There's nothing wrong with the food. Nothing to write home about but, I find it leaves a sour taste in my mouth when two rice bowls (with chicken and veg) and two sodas cost $60 and don't fill me up. Still hungry after the meal and that's not acceptable for what they charge for such simple food. The place comes off as a farm to table sort of spot but no mention of where their meat comes from on the menu to my knowledge. Update: in response to the owner. Thank you for the reply. I will update the review to include an additional star. The soda was lemonade with soda water. The portion sizes are egregious for the price however. I love the harissa cauliflower dish. It's spicy and flavorful and filling without being heavy. There's even organic wine on the menu.

I think I just found one of my new favorite places to eat simply because of its menu options that I have not seen anywhere else. I saw the menu and instantly fell in love. Where else could I possibly get butternut squash lasagna? I ordered it to go, but enjoyed waiting on the cozy couch while relaxing in the charmingly decorated restaurant. It felt like sitting in someone's artsy and spacious living room. When I got home to eat the lasagna in my own living room, I was impressed with each bite. The food here at Sol was absolutely wonderful. My sister and I popped in here for an early dinner and ended up pleasantly surprised. However some other aspects are causing me to drop some stars. We had a recommendation from a friend of mine and we pulled up two seats at the bar, and ordered some drinks and dinner. My main complaint is that the bartender pretty much ignored us during the spouts that we needed him for what seemed like a personal friend that was sitting at the bar. And that was really annoying when I wanted a refill and my sister didn't even get her drink. The bar only had three tabs, mine, the girl he was talking to, and one other couple at the end of the bar. And al I constantly heard was him talking about Snapchat for 15 minutes straight when I was trying to get his attention to place our order. Next time if I end up here in Augusta again, I'm not likely to sit at the bar and will opt for a table to hope that service would be better. I cannot rate this establishment high enough! The food was perfectly seasoned and crafted. I had the Shepherds Pie, it was more than enough food with the absolute best mashed potato overlay I've ever had. They were blended with horseradish and seasoned with cinnamon that made everything come alive within the dish. My girlfriend had the Dill smoked turkey sandwich and dill potato salad. Which was only described as the best turkey sandwich and potato salad she'd ever had. The bartender and manager were so polite and knowledgeable about the area of Augusta and gave us attractions in the area and even other restaurants that should be tried. I felt incredibly so so about this place. There was nothing that really made me want to come back. The menu was very small and nothing really seemed to hit home for me with the options. Tried the steak with potato medallions; it was alright. Tried the turkey sandwich; okay cool. Tried a bite of my child's chicken; holy mess it had so much pepper it was inedible and we ended up getting her a second dinner on the way home. My husband loved this place. Lord knows why.
