First trip here beyond exceeded expectations. First off, decor inside is beautiful and they really did transform the place. Our server, Dan was excellent! Super informative in telling us about the flavors and making reccomendations. We got a chicken Caesar salad which was perfect, French fries were just like McDonald's fries and i mean that in a really good way. SPICY PORK EMPANADA is everything. Wanted to go back today for second day in a row for some more. The toast they bring out before the food is yummmmmy with chimmichurri sauce. This is the third time we have eaten at The Sizzle BBQ. Every time we have eaten here we have gotten a consistently good meal. I ordered the pork ribs and my fiancé ordered the steak sandwich and a ham and cheese empanada. The empanada was fried to perfection and the dough was extremely tasty. My ribs were perfect and delicious. They don't put bbq sauce on and it does not need it with how tender and juicy they are. The food came out quick and the service was excellent. We had our first take out from this place today. Place looks lovely and the ladies working there greeted us nicely and with a smile. We ordered chicken and pork ribs combo with a side of rice and fries and an order of steamed vegetables. I asked for sauce to go and they gave me an assortment of sauces which was really nice. Pork ribs, chicken and fries were very good, however, rice was overly salty, we could not even eat it. I hope it was a one time mistake, maybe they salted it twice but honestly it was inedible Ended up throwing it out. Very good empanadas! We will be ordering takeout in the future but beware of dining in. A 10% gratuity was included in our bill (just 2 of us) without disclosure that I could see. Then there was a tip suggestion on the original receipt to be kept by the restaurant. Review your receipt! We had to request a copy. The waiter told us the undisclosed tip has been a topic of conversation for a long time and nothing would be done about it. The food was adequate. We couldn't determine if the $38 pitcher of passion fruit punch had any alcohol in it. The effort of our server was very good considering what seems to be a lack of training. My friend and I stopped in for lunch the other day and were delighted to have done so! She had chicken quesadillas and i had meatless empanadas . Corn, Caprese, and Bean . The meal came with a little bucket of toast with three spreads to munch on while we waited. Each of us also had the Spinach, apple, ginger juice. Everything was very fresh and delicious! Every one we have tried has been delicious but the cheesesteak definitely stands out the most. The service is always so nice and the food is always out promptly. The decor didn't make sense to me for a BBQ place. It's was cute. I totally didn't understand.. Do you seat yourself upon entry or wait to be seated... Or go to the counter to be seated? Then upon seeing the menu, I really wanted a traditional BBQ chicken dish. Something like chicken, corn on the cob, and shoestring fries. The only thing I could find was a 1/2 chicken. Been wanting to try here for a while and finally stopped in for takeout yesterday. I got the skirt steak and my girlfriend got the lady in red salad. This is a new restaurant here in diverse Hackettstown. It's a great addition to all the other ethnic restaurants we have here. It's where the old Leo's Lunch used to be. Parking on the street. Very nice inside, nicely decorated. Small about 10 tables along with bar seating. To start out, they give you bread & butter & a small ramekin of potato salad. Its BYOB. Service was great! We started with a variety of empanadas waiters choice, they were all delicious, along with 3 sauces. We ordered a house salad which was enormous and fresh. For the entrees we had the skirt steak, & the beef & pork rib combo. Both entrees excellent, cooked & seasoned perfectly. We had rice &beans, which were good but I would try something else next time. The owners son Wakeen (sorry if its spelled wrong) came to the table, introduced himself and told us a bit about the business, welcomed us and invited any comments or suggestions we had. We didnt have dessert as they were quite typical desserts, nothing that really stood out. All in all it was excellent, and we will definitely come back! I was looking fwd to enjoying a quiet peaceful meal with my husband after a busy work day. well that was NOT the case! it seems like the owners daughter (toddler) was at work with them for the evening. she was running around the place, i mean running non stop, without shoes, screaming, laughing, touching all the decor, going up to all the tables and touching peoples food, etc. the owners were in the back and it did not even phase them that she was out of control. our waitress seemed very frazzled and annoyed but could not complain bc it was the owners daughter. we had the most stressful experience! i kept politely asking her to not touch our food, purse, and coat but she did not listen nor care. its obvious that the owners just let their children run arnd wild during business hours. if you are looking for a quiet and peaceful meal then this is NOT the place for you! read more

We ate here last Saturday night, and really enjoyed it! The décor was stylish and welcoming. Our waitress was friendly and well versed in the menu. She recommended the mixed grill and one more main course for our family of four. It looked like too much food when it arrived, but we ate it all (teenage boy!). The mixed grill included beef and pork ribs, two kinds of sausage, skirt steak, and roast chicken. All were delicious, and I would go for the mixed grill again for two or three people. After reading a review from a previous writer about how outstanding the ribs were, I was excited; so I take-out ordered the half rack of pork, half rack of beef ribs. Pork ribs were very tasty, but nowhere near close to melt-in-your-mouth. Beef ribs were just tough and chewy. Empanadas were really good.. very small, but good. We had spinach and cheesesteak and enjoyed them with a variety of sauces. I noticed they had a Rueben empanada.. unfortunately they ran out by the time I got there. Be sure to check your take-out order.. kitchen communication appears lacking as they neglected to give me rice and beans as ordered; just gave me rice. In summary, the only reason I'd go back would be the empanadas, but then again Hackettstown has a dozen shops that can provide that. read more

My family and I have been regular customers of the sizzle since they first opened. We have recommended them to countless people and have used for multiple catering events and frequent large orders. Unfortunately, after our last several experiences here we will not be returning. There have been multiple instances at this point where orders that were placed, both over the phone and online, were not fulfilled. Mistakes happen, but each time this occurred at time of pick up we were made to feel as though this was our fault and no solution was provided. Over the years we've come to expect that if you're told a certain time for pickup, wait at least an extra 20-30 mins or you'll be sitting waiting for your food. We were totally fine with this since we felt the food was worth it. But being treated as though you're in the wrong when an order you placed was never put through is just unacceptable. It's really a shame because we do enjoy the food, but I'd rather spend my money at a restaurant that actually values their customers. read more

The place has a great vibe, the waitress was super friendly and the food was hot & fresh. My wife had a huge spring salad with chicken. The chicken was cooked well and had nice flavor. The salad had fresh greens, avocado, and mango which made a nice combination. I had the beef & pork ribs combo. Big portions, lots of rice & fries as well. Portuguese bbq is different then American style bbq. I typically don't like sauce on my ribs. I like to taste the smoke & seasonings. With this, there was no heavy smoke or seasoning but the home made sauces really complemented the meat! We will be back again! read more

I ordered steak medium rare with rice to go and they gave well done ( Almost burn) with french fries. My friends and I were mandated to pay tips that was include in the bill. I would like to post this review as a WARNING. This place should be shut down for STEALING. anyone who has ever gone here before and enjoy it, the atmosphere has changed DRAMATICALLY. I went here a year ago and had a lovely experience. Went back a few weeks ago with some friends and had the worst experience of my life. A couple of my friends are 21 and they ordered a pitcher of sangria. The restaurant did not id any of us and handed all of us (including the underage ones) glasses to drink the sangria. We ordered cups of water for the table, as when you are drinking it is very important you stay hydrated. They brought us bottles of Poland spring. We questioned the waitress if we would be charged for the water and she said yes $2 a bottle. I said, we didn't want bottles, we want glasses of water for the table, like any normal restaurant. This woman was EXTREMELY rude right off the bat. She said they didn't have a filter for their water so they would not give us cups. (What kind of business serving food doesn't have a water filter?!?!?! That's disgusting!) The waitress then demanded that if we'd opened the bottles of water we MUST pay for them. I spoke to the manager after and she was just as rude if not more. I reminded her that it is a FEDERAL LAW, especially if you SERVE ALCOHOL, that every food serving establishment MUST PROVIDE A WATER SOURCE FREE OF CHARGE. Both the manager and the waitress teamed up on me, arguing and yelling at me that we all would have to pay for the water. I refused, sticking to my guns. The fact that they will serve alcohol to underage kids and DENY them water is a hazard of epic proportions. It is a ticking time bomb for the wrong 20 year old to come in, drink too much in the middle of the summer with no water , and pass out of dehydration. After I told her I would absolutely not pay for it, she called someone, who I'm assuming is the real owner, Maria, who has not been there much lately, and had a conversation with her. Following the conversation she said she would take the water off my bill, so it was pretty clear that whoever that woman is who is taking Maria's place right now is trying to turn the restaurant into a money trap. I said ok and went back to the table. Then when I received the bill I noticed they made an edit at the bottom for an addition (clearly typed in) of "1gratuity" for OVER TWENTY PERCENT OF THE BILL! I was infuriated. Instead of starting another war, my friends and I all left the exact amount in cash, excluding the gratuity. However, after reading recent reviews I've seen SEVERAL people say the same exact thing has happened to them. EXCEPT they paid with card and the restaurant CHARGED THEIR CARD AN EXTRA TWENTY PERCENT AFTER THE BILL WAS CLOSED. THEY ARE STEALING FROM THEIR CUSTOMERS!!! This is credit card fraud, it is JAIL TIME. They are very lucky that I didn't pay with card because if that had happened to me I would have gotten a lawyer. I had the worst experience of my dining life last night at Sizzle BBQ. Unfortunately I have loved going to Sizzle ever since they opened and have supported them by dining there many, many times and getting their take out as well. I always support local businesses including restaurants and especially have made a point to do so during Covid times. Here is the backstory. I ordered dinner for my family and planned to go pick it up for take out. I came to find out later that the 'Delivery' option they advertise available every day was not available that day after all. Anyhow, I drove 10 minutes each way to get our family's take out which I did not mind doing once. When I picked up there was only one person working there, the son of the owner Maria. I had met him before and in fact he was very pleasant the first time I met him. He was our server once when my husband & I were there another time with good friends. I remembered that he was going to be moving to Australia so I asked him how his travels had been. He went on to tell me about Australia, moving to Sweden and coming back to NJ. He said he wanted to move to Hawaii soon and that he 'hated NJ and never wanted to live in NJ'. Okay, I thought that last comment was a little harsh but I did not pay much attention to it then. So.. fast forward when I returned home. My husband unpacked the bag to find out that they forgot all of the side sauces that come with the empanadas of which we ordered twelve. So no sauces. Okay. Then I looked at the salad and it had onions on it which I requested 'No Onion' when I ordered. Okay. Then my husband told me that they forgot to include our large side of beans which was a good part of our main meal. So I immediately called back and the son picked up the phone. I told him what was missing from our order. He said 'Oh... I thought I packed everything' and then said he couldn't deliver what was forgotten because he was the only one at the restaurant. Okay.. so no delivery as advertised. He then said I can either leave you a credit for what we forgot or you can come pick it up. Obviously, this was frustrating for me since my family could not eat dinner as planned and I would have to drive another 20 minutes there and back to get what I already paid for. I then said to him if I come all the way back to the restaurant what can you do to make up for the error? I may not have said it exactly as I had meant it to come across but after working for 20 years in food retail I know what good service is and if you make multiple mistakes on an order you would definitely do something to make up for it. It could have been a free drink, a coupon, anything just to acknowledge the error. He then got very nasty with me over the phone and said 'What can I do for you?!" He was beginning to raise his voice. I repeated myself and said 'Yes, what can you do since my order wasn't right and I have to drive all the way back there'. I then told him my kids could not eat their dinner without the items that were missing and he then mocked me saying, "Your kids can't eat their dinner?" His tone was filled with sarcasm. I told him I would be back there in 10 minutes and hung up the phone. When I walked back into the restaurant he stormed out from the kitchen and looked at me and started yelling in my face calling me 'entitled'. I could not believe his attitude or rudeness and would not stand for it. I told him I was entitled to the food I ordered and that didn't happen. Of course I was also entitled to good or even decent service which was not happening at all either. I also told him that I had worked in food retail for 20 years (mostly in management) and if I had ever spoken to a customer the way he was speaking to me I would have been fired on the spot. He continued to yell at me telling me I was entitled and then tried to tell me that I never ordered the beans in the first place. I quickly put him in his place saying I absolutely ordered them and my husband heard me order since I was talking on speaker phone. He was one of the rudest persons I've ever encountered in any food establishment and I have worked and gone to hundreds and hundreds. Sadly, the owner Maria was standing off to the side witnessing her son berate me with nasty words and she did nothing until the very end. She may have been afraid of him or in shock at the situation but until I motioned for her to step in she just stood there doing nothing. Finally, she came over and pushed him back and told him to walk away. As a paying customer, I do expect restaurants to get your order right. Of course people are human and mistakes happen but when someone working at a restaurant gets aggressive with a customer for asking if they can make up for their mistake somehow that is a major, major problem. I was so rattled from the experience that it literally kept me up that night. I went as far as even considering making a police report for verbal abuse as that is how aggressive this young man was with me. read more
