The bars are back open!! Hooray!!!!
    Pat M.

While running errands on a rainy Saturday afternoon, my wife and I were looking for a new place to try for lunch. Since we were going to be in the area, we decided to stop in at the Old Mill Tavern. This happened to be the first weekend sitting at bars is allowed again and while we sat at a table, it was just nice to see. The drinks were excellent and the food was better than your typical bar food. From my Bloody Mary, to the boneless wings appetizer, to the entrees, we both enjoyed our food. On top of which, the cakes are brought in from a Denville bakery and my carrot cake was delicious! If you're in Chester and you're looking for a nice stop for drinks or food, give this old fashioned tavern a try!

We stopped in after going to Alstede farms. It is a dark, old school pub with a small menu. Overall, I would skip this place. My burger was simply ok , nothing to rave about. It wasn't salted and served overcooked. The wings were also overcooked and the kid's grilled cheese wasn't melted enough. How can you mess up grilled cheese? The only great part of my meal was the Guinness. If I'm around the area again, I am definitely going to try another restaurant.

The only good things about this place were the waffles fries and the cole slaw (and the service was pretty quick too). Our party of four came in on a Sunday a little after two and it was pretty empty. To start, we had the 'broccoli poppers', more out of curiosity and not because we actually wanted them. But they turned out to be pretty good. It's basically just battered discs of broccoli and cheese. For my main, I went with the rib-eye cheese steak. I thought it would be shaved steak, but it was actually just slab of beef, covered with a thick layer of cheese. It was pretty oily so I'm really glad I opted for cole slaw instead of fries, especially since my BF already had fries with his meal. The first few bites were not bad but the more I ate it, the saltier it seemed to get. I felt very lethargic afterwards, and not in a good way. I know, I know - what do I expect after eating a cheese steak? Well I've had other cheese steaks before (that were good) and didn't feel like a pile of sludge afterwards. We only stopped in because it was close to the hiking spot we had just gone to, and we were starving. Won't be returning again though.

Sirloin steak; medium rare. Broccoli & steak fries. Delicious!

Went to this landmark for my mother's 75th birthday. Greeted at the hostess stand cordially & immediately. Sat down at a deuce against the front windows of the tavern. Server immediately took a drink order and asked if we wanted to start with an appetizer. Very friendly staff; probably 6 tables were sat when we got there and a few patrons sitting at the bar. We ordered our drinks & a bacon wrapped scallops appetizer. Got 4 HUGE sea treasures wrapped in swine delivered to the table quickly; cooked to perfection with the standard lemon wedge accompaniment. They were quite nice. The entrees ordered were teriyaki steak (which seemed like a flank cut) asked for medium & was on point with that. My mother loves that dish & has ordered it often. My order was the 16 oz sirloin, asked for medium rare, with broccoli & steak fries. All came out excellent, basically perfect. Kitchen & staff was on point with delivery of food, clearing empty plates, and refilling drinks. Got a $5 slice of carrot cake to end. (Small piece; very) scallops app $15 teriyaki steak $21 sirloin steak $28 soft drinks $3 each. Very nice dinner out. With 22% tip. $100 for a nice celebration out. Highly recommend.

Basic pub grub of burgers, sandwiches and salads, in 2020 serving outside at picnic tables or under a tent. About 20 drafts including New Jersey local beers and most of the usual macro brews. Craft pints $6.50, served in plastic cups outside. We had a quiet lunch on a weekday here, our server was friendly but completely forgot our appetizer. I ordered my french fries well done and wow they were crispy! The Chester chicken sandwich is quite yummy, multi grain bread, a huge grilled breast plus lettuce tomato and sauce. Vegetarian rating: two stars, there's a veggie burger and some salads, you'll do ok, the french fries are also excellent here.

I've been recommended this place more times that I can count, so I finally made my way to Fresco…read moreMexican and was not disappointed. Food: I ordered their Cajun chicken quesadillas, which not only felt strangely authentic because of the style preparation, but it's the first time I've ever seen someone season the tortilla which I loved. Aesthetic: lots of seating both inside and outside, pretty simple set up. Service: having multiple people come to the table and help grab things, give us water, and provide us with the food was nice. Felt like a well oiled machine.

My wife and I found ourselves with nothing to do on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, so we ventured to…read morenearby Chester to get some Mexican. Our regular "go to" places are either Don Jose in Netcong, or the Chapala Grill in Hopatcong. Both are great, with the latter being the upscale and expensive option. On this day, we tried Fresco as we had heard a lot about it. Upon arrival, I was immediately disappointed that we didn't bring our little Chihuahua, as it is pet friendly and a family of four were dining with their chi resting in a stroller on the outside porch seating area. Should we return, we will bring ours. We started with a Queso appetizer ($11.95), and of course they brought the usual complimentary chips and salsa. I liked that they had three sauces to offer, one being more of a pico with fresh chunks of onion and tomatoes, the other two thin sauces with one of them being hot. Very hot, I liked it. The chips were interesting, not your usual larger thin chips, these were thicker and smaller wedge style. They were okay, but I prefer the traditional. I"m not certain I can confirm that they were baked on premises, they didn't seem to have that quality. The queso dip was quite good, thick and creamy when hot, and spread nicely over the tortillas that accompanied it. This establishment uses corn tortillas, probably because I believe they are more authentic to true Mexican cuisine. My own personal preference is flour tortillas for both flavor and texture. As a side note, before anything arrived, our server placed a dish on our table and walked away. It looked to be some type of avocado dish, but wasn't sure. I didn't pay full attention to what my wife ordered, so I dug in and grabbed a piece. It was then that the waiter came back, I think he realized that he put the wrong dish on the table, and took it away noting a piece missing. They brought it back to the kitchen area, NOT to the other table....but still. In my 35 years of dining experience, they should have owned that error and simply left it as it was touched by a customer. To take it back and (perhaps) throw it away was bad form, in my opinion. Our meals arrived quickly, she ordered a chimichanga ($15.95) and I ordered the steak fajitas ($21.95). I should have known what to expect when the server never asked me how I like my steak, which is a consistent question in the other two venues I referenced earlier. The strips of meat were very thin, and very well done as opposed to the medium rare I prefer. Accompanied by traditional onions and peppers, but they were not served on a sizzling plate which is always a nice presentation. They were surrounded by a more than ample serving of yellow rice and refried beans. Again, corn tortillas were presented and not enough of them. They never include enough to fully stock the other ingredients provided. My wife didn't care for her chimi, and I didn't either as I reheated it at home the next day. She asked for it sans beans, so perhaps that was the issue but it was overly stuffed with way too much rice to meat ratio, and the meat included was rather bland ground beef. The outside should have shown evidence of being deep fried, but it was softer and the color was off...like it never saw the oil. That's what a Chimi is, basically...a deep fried burrito. It was off, not a great first representation. The young servers were just great, no complaints about service beyond removing that one incorrect dish. They do offer a better price for cash, but it's really a removal of the service charge placed on the bill should you use a card. Jury is out if we would return. If we did, I would bring my dog and a pack of flour tortillas! It is BYOB, which is nice.
