Stopped in for a bite after a day in Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. My colleague at work recommended The Sink as a Boulder institution and one she frequented while being a CU student. She also had her first date with her husband here! I could see a ton of CU students with their friends and family members enjoying a nice meal with each other. The artwork is pretty groovy - the names of many CU patrons line the walls with some of the most funny, subversive, and warped drawings one could ever see. Surely, this is very much so a college joint with warm and attentive service.The Tuscan Pizza and Chicken Melt were great, but the Fried Mac-n-Cheese was a bit dry and not that cheesy. While watching Diners, Drive Ins and Dives a few weeks before my trip out to Colorado I saw this place featured and was sold. As a huge pizza lover, the Buddha Basil really appealed to me and I was excited to try. The atmosphere of this place is really cool. The low ceilings can induce slight claustrophobia, but the walls are a work of art with drawings and writing everywhere. It was great to look at while you dealt with the slow service. I decided to start off my meal with a Caesar salad and it was the weirdest Caesar salad I've ever had - the dressing was very citrusy. It wasn't terrible, just different. Afterwards I got the pizza I had been looking forward to for weeks and unfortunately it did not live up to the hype. The crust was dry and the toppings were not flavorful. Overall it was a cool experience and I'm glad I got to try something new. I've never been to a place featured on Diners, Dive Ins and Dives before so that was nice and also Obama's been here too! After a fun day tubing on Boulder creek we decided to hit up The Sink. The Sink is located in an area called The Hill in Boulder adjacent from CU. It's a cool quirky little area just off campus. Parking seems like it could be difficult on busy college school days. However today wasn't too bad. We parked in the pay parking lot across the street. We walked in and was immediately greeted by the host. He said it's a 30 min wait so we sat down in the Host area and waited. As we waited we noticed a few famous signatures in the wall including Guy Fieri, Anthony Bourdain (RIP), and this other guy named you Kay have heard of, Barack Obama. So if this place is good enough president of the US than it must be good enough for me. We were seated well before the 30 mins and as we walked past the bar we noticed all the writing in the ceiling and the cool paintings of cartoon characters on the walls. There's pipes coming in and out of the low ceiling going everywhere. Such a cool place. We sat down and ordered drinks and fries as an app. The fries had a good seasoning on them and were tasty. Next we ordered our food. My daughter ordered the chicken strips and fries, my wife ordered the Create Your Own MAC and Cheese. She added bacon and broccoli to her Mac. I decided to let the waiter choose between 2 meals for me. I told him to surprise me with either the Cowboy Rueben, or the Texas Straw Burger (both of which were on DDD). When our food came out I was surprised with the Cowboy Rueben. It had bbq brisket, Cole slaw, cheddar, and was served on rye bread. The sandwich was amazing. The rye bread really added to the bbq flavor and Cole slaw. It wasn't sloppy at all like some bbq sandwiches. It had a good bite, and great flavor from the bbq sauce. My daughters chicken strips almost looked like they were tempura fried and looked amazing. She devoured them. My wife said her Mac and cheese was the best she's ever had. This place was legit and we truly enjoyed the entire experience from start to finish. We will most definitely return. read more

Our server sucked. Took us about 10 minutes between the time she came to greet us till she came back to take orders. She would also walk away faster than we had a chance to ask for refills. We had 2 tables and the other table did not get greeted or asked if they wanted anything to drink for about 20 minutes. She looked like she didn't want to be there, which happens but at least fake it for the tables till you clock off. The calzone I had was ok. A little too burnt for my liking. read more

How have I not reviewed this institution? I hit my head on the pipes. I stole and conquered the juke box. I spent drunken hours with aching arms trying to "do" ceiling art just to have it painted over so I had to do it again. I was so happy that this place hasn't changed much! The food is as great as I remember from the 90's, our server was awesome and the atmosphere is still really funky and unique. Boulder has changed a lot from my college days, but it is so nice that there is a mainstay like The Sink to bring my nearly college aged kids to, and be able to reminisce! Just one thing- We arrived to Boulder late, and it would have been nice to have had their hours specify when they stop serving food (weekday was 10pm). Our server was really nice and thanked us for ordering quickly, but the guy seating us seemed reluctant at 9:55 pm and told us we "had four minutes" (Yelp has them closing at 2 am). The Sink is a CU staple and as such is often full of CU students. That was rad when I myself was a CU student, but now not so much. After around 9 or so it tends to get super crowded and service anywhere, tables or the bar, is really slow. The food is decent - mostly bar stuff like pizza and burgers with a few fancy things like a California melt, which is avocado and brie melted on slices of bread. The real reason to go is for decor (the walls are decorated with all sorts of really cool murals), nostalgia (I believe Robert Redford used to hang out there) or if you're a student going to flip night (the bartender flips a coin, if you call it right your drink is a quarter.) read more

Just a few tiny updates: Their regular lemonade, as opposed to the 'Dan's Special Lemonade' that I railed on last time, is really, really good - if you like mouth-puckeringly sour lemonade. And I do. It reminds me of the homemade lemonade my mom and I used to make when I was a kid - lemon juice, a tiny bit of water, and my mom yelling, 'Come back and put some sugar in that before you drink it!' as I wandered off downing straight lemon juice. And they did it again... tried to take my unfinished plate out from under me while I was in the act of raising a bite of cheesesteak calzone to my mouth. It must be in the training manual or something: 'To expedite service, please attempt to remove customer's half-full plate while customer is distracted.' But you know what? I've been a vegetarian for close to a decade by now. I've tried every salad, every veggie burger, and every wrap that you can throw at me. The Sink makes the best black bean veggie burger that I have ever had. One thing you should know if you're a vegetarian, green, dirty hippie like me is that this place is 100% wind powered and a scratch kitchen. Aka, amazing, no preservative food that will make you feel good about yourself. To give a fair review of the Sink, you need to do it in two parts: one reviewing the Sink as a bar and the other reviewing the Sink as a restaurant. Up until today, I'd only been to the Sink as a bar--for that it gets a 1-star review. The place is overcrowded, and the low ceiling elicits a dormant claustrophobia of which I was unaware except when I go drinking at the Sink. To review it as a restaurant, I went there earlier tonight with my girlfriend, and I can't believe what a different experience it was. We both had the Sink burgers and enjoyed them very much. I was very hesitant, I admit even judged the Sink upon arriving to Boulder. I had heard about it and I immediately put it on my not-to-go list, because let's face it- I already did the college thing, the last thing I need is to knowingly go to a place filled with potentially young drunken college students, and lots of them. I will also admit, that the reason I decided to go was because I saw the highlight on "Diner, Drive-Ins and Dives." You can also find the link on Youtube if you're interested. It was then I realized that although the Sink is a college bar, the food served is mostly all home-made, good quality, local, and humane (grass-fed beef). I decided to go myself and be the judge. I went for lunch so the number of college students (not that there is anything wrong with you guys) was low. Below are my reasons why I'm sold on this place: 1. The place has been open since 1923! You can't beat a place with history, and has maintained a successful past. 2. The food was delicious! I built my own burger with the black bean patty, the chipotle mayo is sooo good and you can see how they make it on DDD. 3. The pizza was fresh and awesome! I tried the Buddha Basil Pizza, which has a pesto-marinara sauce and the crust is the best part. We also had a Smores pizza for desert. They put chocolate and marshmallows baked on a cinnamon-sugar crust, it's a special but hopefully it's there when you go. 4. The staff was friendly and attentive. I could tell that our waitress had a lot of tables but she was very sweet, good with our order, and all the food runners were great as well. 5. Lastly, the artwork on the walls and ceiling. The artwork is from the 60's which they are trying to preserve. It gives the place personality which is a plus for me! To me, this is a restaurant bar with personality, and quality food which is important in my book. I probably won't frequent on Friday night at 9pm to hang with the CU kids, but next I have a craving for bar food I will think of the Sink. read more

I am not a Colorado native but I was passing through with a friend from the area. Judging by other reviews the place is a good college spot for the usual drinkage debauchery. As a restaurant though, the pizza is excellent. Dare I say the best on the west of the Mississippi. The chill atmosphere and claustrophobic layout increases its charm. If you're traveling through Boulder to hippy-out or try out your new $10,000 skis because the magazine said so, stop by The Sink. read more

We stopped by The Sink last night before seeing RNDM up the street at the Fox Theatre. I hadn't been in there forever and it was great to see what they've done with the place - nothing! It's still mostly the same cool dive it always was, although the food and drink options have gotten much better over the last couple decades. We oredered a couple of pints of Hazed & Infused, a great start to any occasion. The Sweet and Hot Firecrackers(?) were the app of choice, eggrolls filled with chicken and spinach with a dipping sauce that tied it all together very nicely. The burgers however were the main attraction. I built one with bacon, American cheese, and onion straws. The burger was cooked perfectly and was all held within a nice sesame seed bun. She had the Spicy Goat and it had bacon, a giant mound of goat cheese, and a spicy sauce. Both the regular and sweet potato fries were just OK, not really worthy of the burgers they were paired up with. The service was great, and even though it was a slow Sunday night it was still a fun place to hang before the show started. Plus, it's Happy Hour all day on Sundays! read more

Those sweet potato fries oh my goodness, get me another order of those! I've tried a lot of dishes on their menu and they have all been wonderful. Pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salad.. I couldn't even tell you my favorite because they're all so good! And the atmosphere.. so fun! You always find something new to look at on those walls and ceilings! Make sure to write your name somewhere and then come back later and try to find it! And for those of you who haven't turned 21 yet: if you go in at midnight on your 21st, they give you a free shot (its absolutely disgusting), but you have to do it! It's tradition. My shot was a horrid mix of Everclear, hot sauce, vinegar, and god knows what else. But the look on my face was priceless and it was a great start to a great night. The Sink is great for one-on-ones, big parties, dates, family get-togethers, and any other gathering you can think of. A Boulder institution! The graffitied walls, low ceiling and divey atmosphere make The Sink part of Boulder/CU lore! It's delicious assortment of local craft beers and tasty bar food help The Sink live up to this hype. It's directly across the street from a major university, so if you're going to complain about it being a "college bar," I have no sympathy. I've ordered the chicken nachos and pizza and both were delicious. The nachos are served on a huge wooden pizza spatula because the cheese is baked over the chips and ingredients! The pizza is very fresh - I opted for the honey wheat crust in the build your own solo pie option and, while I admit I was skeptical about it being too sweet, it was a great choice. Everyone says this is THE place to go if you are in Boulder and I may just have to agree. From President Obama to Guy Fieri, you're in good company here. We were in a hurry and hungry (why is this never a good combo?) and rushed in here to grab something to take out. We decided on a chicken sandwich with bree. It came fast and the service was super friendly. I took a brief look around the place and it does scream college kids and late night beer place and it would be nice to come here again at night. The sandwich was OK, nothing too special. You know the feeling when something is missing from a meal but you can't place what? Well this guy was missing something. Heard lots of positive things about this place, mostly that it was a Boulder staple. Unfortunately, my experience here was sub par to poor. The food took forever to come out, and frankly, wasn't that good either. The quirk about this place is that it looks very dive bar-y. The ceilings are very short, and I'm only 5'9". They also seated us in a room with very loud open plumbing (which is also one of their "quirks.") So with this, we kinda had to shout to eachother. One thing I liked, were the autographs on the wall. The Sink is a little slice of Boulder love, and dates way back. The reason why I can see fairly easily: it has a certain low-ceiling charm to it. The writing and painting on the walls takes you back a generation or two, and the beer selection and food is solid. I've never felt claustrophobic in here (even though I could see this happening to other people), and I always seem to have some interesting company in the place. The first time I came here was with my South African friend, twice my age, who lived through apartheid and after it. We chatted about politics, computer science, and our mutual love for philosophy over a vegetarian calzone. Another time, my professor decided to take a few of us in the class out for a drink (sweet huh), a few rounds and a bit of food later we were talking about politics and our love of philosophy...(hm reoccurring theme?). A third time, was with a few friends were we talked about the Hispanic family, and our love of philosophy, over a vegetarian pizza. This is a true Boulder must see. The ceilings are low and the art work is eclectic and fun. Its in a great area up on the hill near the CU campus. The building has been serving food since the 30's. Its basically a beer and sandwich joint with exceptional build your own burgers. The food quality is good, portions are reasonable and the price is decent.
