Yesterday was our 17th wedding anniversary. We celebrated tonight at an amazing restaurant that I wanted my hubby to try, Second Owl! The owners are an amazing couple, Newll and Regan, and we happen to share the same anniversary date. I've been going to their first location, OwlOwl since they first opened, so of course I want to support them at this location as well. During the mesl we enjoyed various sakes fyom the sake flight, so much do that my hubby ordered one for his dessert. We started our meal with duck spring rolls that were crispy and with a good amount of duck in the rolls. For our main meal we had their house special fried rice that had an assortment of meats as well as pineapple chunks. The flavor of the rice was different than what I'm used to but I truly enjoyed it, maybe a bit of curry seasoning? The sea bass larb is such an amazing dish. I love the citrus base sauce on the larb and the "chips" that they serve with it reminds of the shrimp chips I ate as a child. My husband loved the Crying Tiger and we both believed that it was one of the best steaks we've ever been served. It was cooked to a perfect medium rare, so tender. The sauce married well with the steak as well as the microgreens and tomatoes that it was served with. Finally, I enjoyed the Tom Kha Crème Brûlée but with a little surprise. Newell brought out a Happy Anniversary plate and they played the Anniversary Song in the restaurant for us. I now have two favorite dishes there and can't wait to have more Crying Tiger and Sea Bass Larb. read more

I was super excited for a new Thai place within walking distance. I had been eyeing all the pretty Instagram posts, but what I got from takeout was not even close to what's being shown on social media. Maybe they just treat their takeout orders differently than dine-in? Even if that's the case, that's not a good look. I also echo another reviewer's criticism regarding the ridiculously inflated prices in relation to the quantity of food. This is a picture of the calamari (untouched) -- this cost $16!! We went here for lunch and overall had a really good experience. There isn't a huge difference in price between the lunch special and a regular meal, except that the lunch special includes an added soup or salad. We tried the Tom Yum and Tom Kha soups and both were absolutely delicious! I ordered the Pad Thai and it was actually very good -- I finished the whole thing, which I rarely do when eating out. For dessert, we had the mango sticky rice. The mangoes were fresh and tasty, but I didn't love the rice as much because I prefer sweeter desserts. However, my fiancé really enjoyed it and said it wasn't too sweet, which was a plus for him. We went around 1 PM on a Tuesday, and it wasn't very crowded. New Thai spot on 2nd street! The second owl is a cozy and open air restaurant on the corner of 2nd and La Verne Ave. We got the pork belly to start and wow... it was crispy but not too much where the fat was hard, but still really juicy. Put the two sauces on time and a squeeze of lime...perfect. My husband ordered the pad thai and a side salad. He got it in a mild with chicken. It was nice and saucy and flavorful, with the right amount of tang. I had to order the Belmont, it has a combination of all my favorite things! You get the option to choose between the Thai style-somtum (the one I picked) or the Lao-style. The thai papaya salad which had the dried shrimp and whole peanuts which I got in a mild. Perfect amount of fermentation, not too funky which I enjoyed. I absolutely loved the pairing with the crispy chicken wings and the warm sticky rice. They also include the crispy pork skins on top of the papaya salad! And for drinks we got the butterfly tea & thai tea which our server, Shannon made it phenomenal! Speaking of our server, Shannon greeted us right away when we arrived, prompted us to sit on any table we desired, and gave us suggestions and constantly checked up on us, overall just treated us so well. This is not only my new favorite Thai restaurant but also my new favorite restaurant in general. The food is so delicious with intricate flavors and authentic Thai. It is always tastefully presented with a beautiful presentation. You can tell the chefs and owners takes pride in their work. The service is always always attentive and fast enough. Aum, Shannon and Matt have helped me on the 2 different days I went at lunch and dinner and they were all exceptional servers. The ambience is casual, lounge ambience. So happy that they open a second location in Long Beach! By far my favorite Thai Restaurant! We came in today for their soft opening and tried the Baan Yaang, The Belmont thai style, Sea Bass Larb and Pad Thai. Everything was so delicious, especially the Sea Bass Larb! Came here for Father's Day and had such a great time! The service was amazing and everyone was super friendly and really accommodating. It was my family's first time trying Thai food, and this spot was the perfect intro. We started off with the skewers that came with three types of meat and a bunch of tasty sauces and honestly, all of them were delicious. For our main dishes, we got the filet mignon, the pad Thai with shrimp, and the short rib massaman curry. I got the short rib, and it was so good, the meat was super tender and the sauce had the perfect mix of sweet, savory, and a little spicy. I'd 100% come back just for that. To end the meal, we had the mango sticky rice. I've never really thought of rice as a dessert, but this totally changed my mind. The mango was fresh and juicy, and the rice was warm, sweet, and had a nice crunch on top. It was the perfect way to finish the meal. Also, the vibe of the restaurant is great. I was really looking forward to visiting Second Owl after seeing pictures on yelp the place look super cute. Unfortunately, I ended up feeling let down. The menu lacked many of the classic Lao dishes I love, including the staple foods that I usually look for. The restaurant is quite small, and my husband and I were seated at the tiniest table, even though larger tables were available. We prefer to order multiple dishes to share--a family-style experience with favorites like papaya salad, fried chicken wings, some sort of soup, sticky rice, and laab. Unfortunately, the cramped table made it impossible to do that. To make matters worse, the restaurant has a door that opens fully to the outdoor patio area, which let in a lot of flies. They provided portable fly fans, but those took up even more space on our tiny table. All in all, I don't think I'll be returning to Second Owl. It just didn't live up to my expectations. read more

Food was fresh and packed with flavor. Portions were large and food came out hot! Service was attentive and the servers themselves were knowledgeable and accepting. Only ONLY negative was the flies. Having tried Owl, Owl before, I was curious if this place was related to the amazing Thai in Signal Hill. I was glad to find out it is, and let me tell you, this place was equally amazing. Apparently they've only been open a few months, but I will definitely be back. The food is incredible. This is everything we had in our party. I had the ka prow and it was a 10/10. I added veggies and it was packed with protein. My husband had the fried rice and said it's one of the best he's had. My friend had the pad Thai and she loved every bite. Just when I thought our meal couldn't get any better, we got the mango rice and it was fire. Rich, flavorful, yet not too sweet. This is a must! I'm honestly a bit confused about the very high ratings for this restaurant. We went there this weekend and like nearly all 2nd Street restaurants, the location is wonderfully central, right in the heart of the action. We didn't even struggle too much to find parking. I ordered the Kao Soi Duck and my wife had the Short Rib Massaman, both part of their Signature Dishes. Both dishes were fine, but unremarkable. The ingredients were cooked appropriately, but the sauce and meat flavors were not as rich and fully developed as I would've expected, especially given Second Owl's remarkable Yelp! ratings and verging-on-pricy entrees. Both dishes tasted like solid but unremarkable takeout/delivery Thai to us. On the plus side, portion size was as expected and service was pleasant. If you don't mind driving out to Cerritos, Siam Station in Landmark Center across from the mall absolutely *slays* this place in terms of flavor, pricing, too. Given that these were both Signature dishes, we probably won't be back. There are too many other good restaurants in the immediate area to select instead (nevermind Chiang Rai or even Nayada, both of which are far superior). read more

So for anyone who knows me I absolutely am a Thai food fanatic and thus a 5 star review on a rushed on my end meal has never happened. I showed up with less than a half hour and what was presented was a perfect pad seew dish and balanced thai tea. The flavors were flawless, the balance of noodles to veggies to chicken was equal and the portion could have easily been shared. The side green salad was picture perfect in presentation and the dressing is amazing and i would buy a bottle of it on the spot. New to the neighborhood and first timer here! Located on 2nd st, they also offer outdoor dining for people watching. Ordered the Larb Salad with beef paired with a sake which was savory and delicious! Served with prawn crackers and slices of cucumbers, the dish was a substantial size with the perfect balance of flavors! Most importantly, great service. Flavors were okay, because of the accompaniments, which I really appreciated that the staff included. Love this place! Stumbled upon it while walking by and had to try the newest Thai place on Second. We had the skewers for an appetizer and it came with many different sauces. The peanut sauce was one of the best I've had and is made from a family recipe. For the main course we had pork fried rice and The Belmont. Amazing flavors and high quality ingredients. We went on a busy Friday night and they handled it really well. They opened the outside seating area for the first time since opening roughly a month ago. For the soft opening they did great! The customer service was great really enjoyed both ladies that helped us out. While waiting for our food we heard and saw people commenting on how busy they were and how excited they are for a Thai restaurant on 2nd. The atmosphere was very warm and welcoming. The chicken pad Thai looks spicy but it isn't at all!!! I love how with the tofu they make it tiny so it's not noticeable. The green onion had semi big pieces and the peanuts definitely added to it. The chicken fried rice was amazing! Everything was delicious in the rice but the onion pieces were a little on large side. Second Owl is delicious!!! It's definitely a hidden gem on second street, newly added. Every dish is flavorful and feels like an authentically cooked Thai or Laotian food. As competitive as the restaurant business is - it still shocks me that you find servers that don't appreciate business! I walked in and there were empty tables and the woman says "give me 15 minutes to help you." And I said "I'm not getting take out. I'm here to eat." And she says "I know.
