Apple cider donuts, where have you been all my life? We were lucky enough to get a half dozen of these gorgeous specimens whilst still warm and toasty. (But they were still pretty good the next morning cold.) Our party of four was in unanimous agreement that these donuts were nothing short of heavenly. The only reason I give this place three stars it means because the wait is always so long. Every time I go. It's a least a half an hour, and even if I go in the morning or in the afternoon, it's all the same. But other than that the food is amazing. The service is amazing. The smell of fresh baking in the morning will literally draw you straight into this little spot! Fruit stand out front, bake and snack shop inside. The counter service was very friendly and charming. We restrained ourselves and left with 6 donuts, a strawberry rhubarb turnover, a basket of apricots, and a jar of apricot pineapple jam. Donuts were crispy on the outside tender on the inside. Always a must-stop every time we're passing highway 4 or Murphys! Their turnover is our favorite, mostly the cherries but the strawberry is good too! The price is decent since it's good and fresh. We tried their apple/peach pie recently, it was good but we prefer the turnover still :). The downside, they don't answer their phone. We tried to call for a couple of days at different times to see if they still have turnover but no luck on answering their phone. It's understandable since they always have a line and are busy. I just wish they would answer because we were willing to drive an hour to get some of their goodies. read more

Took a road trip for the day through Calaveras Big Trees State Park, Lake Alpine, and Lake Tahoe. Saw this fruit and cider stand driving through Murphy. Absolutely a must!!! A quick weekend getaway to Arnold had our hostess with the mostest bringing us breakfast back to the cabin while we slept in. When we wandered outside of our rooms and slowly gathered around the kitchen table, the white boxes full of apple turnovers and an entire jug of apple cider awaited us. Imagine a misty morning spent wandering amid towering sequoias at nearby Calaveras Big Trees State Park. The snow has been falling, and you are chilled, but exhilarated by the glorious landscape you have been imbibing. Driving down the highway, you spot a low building sporting weathered apple signs. You quickly pull over, thinking a snack might be nice. A table resides under a covered outdoor area displaying a variety of apples, jams, baking mixes, and salsa. You think that might be all there is, then notice a customer standing at a window a few yards away. As you near the window, the most heavenly fragrance wafts toward you. Inside: a mountain of fresh fried apple cider donuts, pies topped by towers of whipped cream, a ring of cookies, baking sheet upon baking sheet of turnovers, and so much more! Discovering this kingdom of treats out in the country feels like straight magic. That is the experience I had, at least. Once I got over the shock of such a find, I was thrilled to see they offer hot apple cider, and ordered it right off. You can only see a smidge of the goodies residing inside, but there is a small menu, so I next enquired about a fritter, but they were sold out for the day. Why do fritters always sell out?! Story of my life. No big deal, though, as we are big fans of bread pudding, and they still had some. While they packaged it, we threw in a donut too. And then they handed us the pudding. We thought we were ordering a slice, but this was a 6 x 8" tin overflowing with crumb topping! It had to have weighed at least a pound! Grinning at each other in disbelief, my husband and I headed back to the car. We sipped some of the delicious cider, and split the tender but crisp-exteriored donut. I declared bread pudding is only acceptable warm, but my husband insisted on a bite. Guys. That stuff is insane! The topping was easily an inch thick, they had drizzled it with caramel sauce, and big chunks of apple were nestled throughout. We had a long drive, and every hour or so he would demand a bite. Each time I opened the box it smelled just like donuts until I realized the bread pudding was MADE OF LEFTOVER DONUTS! What is this wonderful world we are living in?! As soon as we arrived home from our road trip, my husband checked the drive time to return to The Red Apple, and determined he could easily make it there and back over a weekend. I think he was only half kidding. Sure, we live a ways away in Utah, but there is nothing else quite like that mystical bakery slinging treats along Highway 4. read more

The Red Apple and I have a long history... when I was a child/ teenager we spent the whole summer, and most weekends at our Cabin near Arnold. On our way up and back we would stop for Apple Donuts. Fast forward more years than I care to admit, I found there were still operating when I saw a YELP review. DD and family made plans to visit this fall. I called ahead from the road and held a dozen. It has not changed one bit. Donuts and Apple Cider were purchased, and we sat at picnic tables to eat. Donuts were light and chewy... flavor was a phenomenal blend of spices. Sad I didn't get a pie, but it is not far. We will just need to go back. What a wonderful throwback gem! read more

Great little shop with good service. We went here less than an hour before closing. Sadly they didn't have any apple donuts left but we did get a few harvest hand pies. The woman at the counter was very friendly. Even though they were very busy, she spoke slowly and calmly and I really appreciated that. The hand pies were delicious. Came here on a late Friday morning and ordered the following turnovers: harvest, strawberry rhubarb, apple and blueberry. I also got an m&m cookie, apple dumpling and half a dozen apple cider donuts. The favorites were the apple turnover and donuts. You should probably skip the m&m cookies altogether. The dumpling was weird. It is a pretty large, ball-shaped pastry with an outer layer of dough, has a cinnamon/sugar layer and inside is an apple core. I guess you eat it like an apple? I was on the way to a wedding rehearsal so I was unsure af how to eat that thing. I suppose if you have a knife/fork you could cut it in half or in apple slices and enjoy all flavors together in one bite. The donuts were pretty bomb. I thought they'd be warm/fresh, but they weren't. When we got to the hotel we heated them up a bit in the microwave and they were good as new. The harvest turnover appeared to have canned fruit in it, which was good. The strawberry rhubarb and blueberry turnovers were oozing with filling so be careful- it's messy and gooey. The apple and harvest were the least gooey. For you nut allergy folks, they do have some type of nuts sprinkled on top of the turnovers- I believe they're almonds. read more
