At 7:01, an announcement came on saying the store had been closed for one minute and to head to the register. Totally fair. I needed one more thing from produce so I hurried- another announcement at 7:02 said to "stop shopping- we are closed" I grabbed my last item and went up front. By 7:03, I was already being checked out. And yet the reaction from staff was... unbelievable. There were several employees standing at the front just staring at me--clearly irritated, like I'd personally ruined their evening. It was three minutes past closing. Not 30. Not 15. Three. Then it somehow got worse. They were out of bags (understandable), so I asked if I could use the hand basket to carry my items to my car, which was literally parked right in front of the doors to the store. I was told no, "these baskets cant leave the store"--and that I needed to go outside and get a cart instead. So I had to run out, grab a cart, and come back in... while the entire staff stood there watching me. There must have been 6 or 7 employees glaring at me with dirty looks like I had insulted them personally. The older checker was grumpy and rude, but honestly the whole team contributed to making the experience feel hostile and unwelcoming. I completely understand wanting to close on time. But if ringing someone up at 7:03 feels like a crisis to your staff, that's a management issue--not a customer problem. Also- why not sell reusable bags if you run out of bags so often? I would have bought one to make it faster for me to exit the store. Seems like a simple solution to avoid the extreme stress your staff is experiencing

They also make some of the best deli sandwiches around! We even spoke with one of the managers because we truly enjoy shopping here and hope to see one improvement in the deli department. The deli staff always acknowledge customers, which we appreciate, but the wait can be quite long because they continue finishing other tasks before helping the customer in line. We understand they have work to do, but it would be wonderful if serving waiting customers could be a higher priority. Since this is the only grocery store in the area, we hope the deli department can improve the wait times. We love this market and want to see it continue to thrive. Safeway has been bringing it lately…read more If you read many of my past grocery store reviews - you will quickly learn that I get sooooo much genuine bliss from visiting local grocery stores. I've even dedicated whole birthdays - to visiting grocery stores. Perusing well stocked aisles - especially when the words 'organic' and 'natural' grace them - is where I often get my dopamine highs :) Recently Safeway has been serving up some solid grocery store finds. Their berry selection has been 'berry' good. In fact their blueberries are some of the best around. I will often stock up on multiple cartons and will even freeze some of them for cold fruity weekday snacks. In addition to carrying solid berries - their produce selection in general is varied and reliable. I still adore Grocery Outlet and many of the other quality grocery stores in and around the area - but when I have a basic shopping list - I know that Safeway knows what's up. Though the current handleless paper bags are definitely not serving. Anyone. Trust.
