I walked into Big Trees Market at 6:50 PM last night (3/31) to grab a few quick items. There were still multiple customers shopping--completely normal. At 7:01, an announcement came on saying the store had been closed for one minute and to head to the register. Totally fair. I needed one more thing from produce so I hurried- another announcement at 7:02 said to "stop shopping- we are closed" I grabbed my last item and went up front. By 7:03, I was already being checked out. And yet the reaction from staff was... unbelievable. There were several employees standing at the front just staring at me--clearly irritated, like I'd personally ruined their evening. It was three minutes past closing. Not 30. Not 15. Three. Then it somehow got worse. They were out of bags (understandable), so I asked if I could use the hand basket to carry my items to my car, which was literally parked right in front of the doors to the store. I was told no, "these baskets cant leave the store"--and that I needed to go outside and get a cart instead. So I had to run out, grab a cart, and come back in... while the entire staff stood there watching me. There must have been 6 or 7 employees glaring at me with dirty looks like I had insulted them personally. The older checker was grumpy and rude, but honestly the whole team contributed to making the experience feel hostile and unwelcoming. I completely understand wanting to close on time. But if ringing someone up at 7:03 feels like a crisis to your staff, that's a management issue--not a customer problem. Also- why not sell reusable bags if you run out of bags so often? There isn't much in terms of groceries in Arnold, so this place was the place to be. Some of the items were a bit expensive, however we were glad to find all of the groceries we needed for our meals. It was conveniently located near gas stations and restaurants and our vacation rental. The people working there were very friendly too. read more

Well stocked market in Arnold. Tried their deli section while waiting for a charge. All standard fare, a couple fun specialty sandwiches, the Ponderosa Veggie and Giant Sequoia. I went for the build your own-loaded roast beef and it was great. Large and filling. At first, I was going to bail, they are stuck in a tiny corner of a busy floor. The bread selection visible wasn't great, but the open case meats and cheese were all good. There were two people on the meat counter just sort of restocking but not helping. Two people on sandwiches, but they were fast enough. I think they actually could be great with a little space adjustment. read more

Looks like a small quiet local market from the outside but it's very nice inside . Excellent meats at a reasonable price . High end liquor and wines catering to the richer locals on vacation up here. Corn and vegetables were fresh. read more

This review is for the Giant Sequoia Sandwich: The review would have been better if I had a picture but I was hungry and my half of the sandwich was so good that I ate 3/4ths of it before I even drank anything! My husband was even quicker. After visiting Calaveras Big Trees State Park on a colder Monday in October, we made a stop at their deli because we remembered eating a sandwich there 10 years ago or so. Our memory served us well as the Giant Sequoia sandwich was fabulous: Dutch Crunch bread, bacon, avacado, turkey, lettuce, tomato, and more. The service was quick and the sandwich was great. We stop at Big Trees Market on our way up to our cabin. The store is well stocked and employees are generally very helpful. The store appears clean, but is showing its age. Pricing seems on the higher side, but given that they have no competition, what choice do you have. Selection is great, especially when you consider that the store is relatively small compared to the larger format grocery stores. Checkout is always quick, even when they are busy, because they have an adequate amount of employees and check stands open. read more

Cashiers are rude and probably racist! They would not greet my family and I after we said hello (we're Hispanic) but I saw they would be friendly and warm to other customers who were white. The most unwelcoming cashier was a tall girl with a pixie cut and glasses - SO RUDE! read more

We were in the area for work last weekend and stopped here for our breaks and shopping for dinner and snacks. Highly impressed by everything they had behind their beef, seafood, sausage, and deli counters. Everything was fresh and bountiful. We cleared out their prawns for dinner. So delicious with lots of garlic, butter, and Cajun seasonings! We also bought a bag of fresh, plump, sweet cherries - highly satisfying for our road trip snack. . Cute little gift shop area and also great selections in their bakery as well. The bathrooms were clean and fresh smelling. This is a huge plus for me. I've been scarred from what I've seen all over Northern CA. Service was quick and friendly, always appreciated. read more

0/5 if I could Was in town for a visit when my 5 friends and I needed to get groceries but only 4 of us wanted to buy alcohol. The workers were nice and friendly but when it came time to check out, a cashier with a pixie cut, glasses and pins said we needed all to show an ID. We were confused because we were making separate transactions and even drove different cars. She insisted that there was nothing she can do and she can lose her job right before making the reference that there was a sheriff behind us. like are you implying we'll get legal action? my friend asked another cashier if it was the law or store policy and she said it was just store policy. We left and only the 4 of us that wanted to buy alcohol returned 30 minutes later. As we were paying, the same cashier (whose line we were not in this time) came over and said my 2 other friends who went home needed to be there with their IDS. Two of us already got ID-ed by then and charged for the purchases. However the cashier said they weren't allowed to leave until my 2 friends who weren't ID-ed returned. Even when my friends unnecessarily drove back, the same cashier was talking negatively about us to other customers in her line. Two of my friends went back two days later to buy some paper towels, and the same girl kept giving them looks. It was very disrespectful, and even if it was store policy, her attitude and the way she took everything so personally was off putting. I am even more concerned over this behavior after reading some other reviews that have mentioned potential discrimination from the same employee. Four of us are Mexican, and knowing that other Mexican customers have had the same experience while seeing white customers have no issues is appalling. Needless to say, we will not be returning which is unfortunate given that it's the only store in the area for another 20 minutes. read more

I love this grocery store. I hate to give it such a terrible review. Everyone has been fantastic until I had to replace a battery operated flashlight I had purchased perhaps 2 hrs earlier. It didn't work and unfortunately I had the displeasure of dealing with Darwin who is in his own way a "Darwin Award" for rudeness and purposely being unhelpful. He even accused of stealing. Truly amazing and public experience when I responded. Just not cool. Should I lawyer up for false accusation of shop lifting. You tell me. I think the best course of action is to get my $9.99 Choche replaced without incident before I push further!!! read more

I currently live in San Jose Ca, but lived in Arnold for 6 years, years ago. Recently a friend vacationed in Arnold and brought me back a 4 pack of Snowshow Apricot Wheat Beer, purchased at Big Trees Market. The beer was completely flat. I talked to someone at the store and was told to bring it back. Really, I live in San Jose, you expect me to travel over 100 miles for a return? No other offer was given. Perhaps a gift card that I could have gifted to a friend that lives in Arnold, would have been more appropriate. I'm beyond disappointed in Big Trees Market and their customer service. since they are the only show in town, I guess they think it's not important. read more

Grocery Stores make me so happy. Big Trees Market was such a fun stop yesterday on our day adventure. It's well organized with a nice balance of healthy items - as well as delicious treats. I was able to locate my favorite water - in between admiring their kombucha selection - as well as their convenient deli. If you are looking to stock up before an afternoon picnic or excursion - you can't go wrong here. You can pick up pre-made cold salads or sandwiches from their deli, in addition to all of your standard basics in their other aisles. You can even manifest freshly squeezed orange juice here. I was particularly impressed with how clean their bathrooms were and how friendly their staff were. I'm looking forward to stopping in here again - next time we are in the area. Trust. read more

Great store.... very well stocked and a variety of grocery you'd see at any safeway,etc including a deli that makes good sandwiches, has a good gourmet cheese assortment and some pretty good rotisserie chicken. The produce is always fresh and well stocked...for us the beef at their meat department is excellent...as goods any we get back down in the bay area...choice to prime in my opinion...tons of marbling in the last ribeyes we got here ...there's also a decent seafood section with scallops, shrimp,salmon, etc Parking is never an issue ...huge lot.Great place to stop on the way to bear valley, big trees park. This is me writing a review about Big Trees Market and wishing I had a local market like this back home. My family and I were in the area at our family cabin and needed to stock up on groceries. We found Big Trees Market nearby and I was really impressed. Why you may ask? How could a person be impressed by a mere grocery market? Let me tell you why, it's because this place seemed like a family grocery store. Well stocked and workers actually working to stock and help out. The people shopping were very friendly and the staff was so nice. I don't know how much more to explain it, it just gave a very homely feeling that left an impression on me. We were able to find everything we needed quickly and did not have to wait in extremely long lines to check out. It was a nice market place and again I wish we had something like it close to home. This will be our go-to market when we're visiting our family cabin again in the future! read more

If you value your health and safety, perhaps you should plan to bring your groceries and an ice chest for your day trip or your stay at a rented house. Despite the 50 gallon drum of hand sanitizer parked outside the front door and the signs that say masks are required, four of five people in the store are not wearing masks. There is no social distancing and only two cashiers for about 60 people standing in line to purchase things. This evening, the cashier was an older Caucasian man with gray hair and a gray beard who is not wearing a mask. He was very talkative and jovial to the customers, seem to have a bit of a cough, use his left hand to cover his mouth and then touched the customers items and rested his hand on the counter. Before he touched my items I asked him if he had any he has sanitizer because I saw that he had coughed and used his hand. To his credit he just said "sure" turned around and sprayed something on his hands, rubbed them together and then sprayed and wiped the work surface. The young woman who was waiting to bag groceries had a mask, gloves and was pretty well covered up -- looked at me and said thanks. I find it horrifying that anyone would cough into his hand - even decades before the pandemic we were taught to use the inside of an elbow. Not a safe place to shop. read more

Were in town for a weekend away with my kids, visited this store and was able to find almost everything we were looking for. My complaint is that the customer service was completely absent from the entire time, including the point of sale. The clerk, Veronica, didn't even say hello or thank you; zero pleasantries, zero service. It was obvious she didn't welcome us as customers. read more

It's a relief to have a good market nearby when you are camping, because you always forget or run out of something. We got tired of pancakes every morning and got delicious store bakery blueberry muffins as relief. They also have a good selection of local craft beer and locally roasted coffee beans. The name makes it seem like it's a small corner store, but no. This is a full sized grocery store with all that you need at fair prices, and better yet, it's not a big national chain. read more

This was the closest market for us when we stayed in Dorrington. As many other yelpers noted, even though it's located in a small town, they have great selection and prices. We were able to get everything we needed for our weekend trip- organic yogurt, tofu, organic dry pasta, salad kit, blackberries, Abe's muffins (which were only $3.59 btw- they are usually $5.99 at our local Whole Foods), sweet white corn, freshly made take and bake pizza, and some solid steaks as well. Since there weren't many restaurants to choose from, we decided to buy groceries at Big Trees and cook at our cabin for both dinners. This ended up being a great choice. The take and bake pizza was very good and reasonably priced at $14.99 (enough for 3 adults and we had some leftover for breakfast!). My husband picked up a few steaks from the meat department and we were pleasantly surprised with the quality of the meat. Although it was labeled as Choice, we felt it could have been Prime for the amount of marbling. A great stop when you're in the Arnold/Dorrington area! read more

Prices are a little higher than what you might find coming from the Bay, but they are well stocked and the staff is more than helpful when it comes to helping you find what you need. Found this place on Yelp and decided to try a sandwich here. The sandwich was great! However, I just want to say that I was absolutely disgusted by one of the older ladies making sandwiches who was coughing all over the damn place with no mask and coughing into her gloved hands and continuing making sandwiches. Luckily she didn't make mine. Pandemic or no pandemic, in food service you should know to cough into your elbow if you must and that you absolutely never cough into your gloves or ungloved hands and then proceed to touch food. Big Trees Market is in a strip mall seen on the left side of Hwy 4 if you're coming from the west. They have a nice produce department, butcher department, and bakery goods area. During the morning and afternoon, you can get fresh coffee for a $1 a large cup/ $0.50 for a small cup near the deli. The deli has a featured sandwich and soup of the day. There's a pre-printed sandwich-build form to fill out where you check off which breads and meats and other components you want. Pretty much anything you'd expect to see in any well-stocked supermarket, you'll find here. It's nice to see a small town with a good market there. It is well-stocked with an impressive number of local wines and craft beers from all over. They do have some of the beers from the local Snowshoe Brewery as well as Delirium Tremens, Allagash Black, Firestone barrel-aged stouts, and special edition stouts from Deschutes. read more

Their meat counter and their staff are amazing. Having a meat counter allows me to buy exactly what I need. For the people complaining about prices go shop at Safeway and see what you get. This is pretty much the only grocery store in town. While prices a tad inflated they always manage to have what you need in a pinch (even a pair of boys water shoes after my son lost one). If you are planning to need a weekend's worth of food, better to stop in Stockton and pack it in. read more

We've purchased our groceries here for the 25 yrs that we've owned here. But no more. We don't feel safe in any store that pretends that covid doesn't exist or just doesn't care about the health and safety of their customers and staff. So, when you are up in the mountains, you don't really have much of a choice as far as grocery stores goes. Big Trees Market is truly one of those stores that can be deemed as a "Food'n Stuff" stores. They have everything you can need while visiting the area and of course the have a great selection of groceries for all types of diets. While the price of the items are slightly higher than most grocery stores you're accustomed to, the quality of the products especially the produce does not suffer. Make sure to take advantage of their water machine they have outside when you are visiting Arnold, it says so much better that the bottled stuff inside the store. I almost forgot! They have a very decent selection of craft beers, something that you don't normally is in a small store like this. They close at 9:00 so make sure you get all of your needs and supplies while they're still open. read more

Great supermarket with everything you need. Prices are generally comparable to what you'd find in a San Francisco Safeway, with the exception of seafood which seems to be sold at a premium all throughout Arnold, Murphy, etc. Staff all friendly, and many of the customers seemed to be regulars. One stop shop for all your grocery needs if you are just visiting, which is nice because there really aren't many restaurants in the area, or at least not a lot of variety. read more

I am happy to report that BTM has finally taken the health of employees and customers more seriously, and the staff are wearing masks. The store still has a good selection of meat, drinks, vegetables. I especially appreciate Todd's bread, which is in a display near the entrance, and they make great brats (at the butcher). Quite an experience at Big Trees Market in Arnold yesterday. My wife Wendy, me and my daughter her husband and my grandson decided to get out of the smoke in Stockton. On the way up we stopped at the deli to get sandwiches. We filled out our order sheets and turned them in. Older lady was rude when I turned mine in because I failed to put my name at the bottom. I made the mistake of asking where you pay and was cut off with her arm in the air rudely saying " at the register" "at the register". The young man that made my sandwich was very nice and joked with me. He made my two Giant Sequoia sandwiches both the same , but forgot the turkey on one of them. The one without turkey had a hair in one half. They both come with Dutch crunch roll but, we're on a French roll. My grandsons sandwich was supposed to be on a Dutch crunch but was on two different breads on each half? My son-in-law's salami sandwich wasn't't cut in half but, the crazy thing is that there was a piece of plastic the size of a finger was on the salami and a piece of paper was still on the cheese. When I checked out at the register the unfriendly lady just tossed my potato chip bag and Cheeto bags over to the bagger. Never have I had such a crazy experience here or any other deli. Some of your employees need to understand that the public is paying your pay check and need an attitude adjustment. # not a good experience read more
