This Safeway is located in Tuolumne County and we like to stop in everytime we're in town visiting friends. We walked in and immediately saw how nice and upgraded their Starbucks was - it was nicer than regular locations! I was tempted to order something because it looked so new, but I got distracted with shopping. This location is also very clean and organized - they offer a hot food section, a sandwich counter, deli, butcher and even a florist. I was really impressed with their meat and produce selection - they also had an impressive cheese display and they also offered prepackaged Boar's Head cheese and lunch meat. I was bummed that they didn't have 1of the items I was looking for, but I bought a bunch of stuff and it was surprisingly under $200. They also had the new Alani flavor in stock which I was so excited to try and the Chobani Chocolate Covered Strawberry coffee creamer that I'd never seen before. The clerk checking us out was very friendly and personable - we bought Biscoff Cookies to make the viral Japanese Cheesecake and he gave us some suggestions on how else to use them. Had my very first experience with Sonora's Safeway and had such a great experience. Not sure why there are so many low reviews... First and foremost, this Safeway store is absolutely spotless. Everything is clearly labeled and well stocked. The staff is kind and are open to help if you need assistance or have a question. Produce, bakery, & deli department items look every fresh and again, offer an abundance of options to chose from. The gentleman handling the meats department was especially helpful. I didn't catch his name but wished I did so I could give him a proper shout out! Thank you for answering our questions, steering us in the right direction, and giving my sister and I our first cluster of laughs for the day. Don't make me have to be a computer wizard to take advantage of your weekly discounts!! I am an 80 year old grandma, with limited eyesight, and your "clip deals" feature is too time consuming and takes tons of time to manage. At the very least. Add a feature to let you automatically accept all coupon deals with one click' Your business practices discriminate agains non-computer literate individuals, as well as the sight impaired customers!! The health department needs to make a visit to this Sonora Safeway. On wednesday 9-3-25, THREE different shoppers with dogs in carts and apparently the employees and management allows it since they're going freely throughout the store without being stopped. These are not legitimate service dogs. If they were, the owners would know the ADA laws requiring service dogs to be carried in hand or walking on the floor. Lately the Safeway app has gone downhill. Just got prescriptions but the app says it can't locate them. They shouldn't go green and not have the information about your prescriptions available in the app. So I'm taking prescriptions and have no idea what the side effects are. Very bad!!! read more

Placed my first online grocery order for pickup........NEVER AGAIN. The email instructions said to let the store know that I was there for the pick up via the Safeway app. This feature was nowhere to be found on the app, so had to go into the store, which is what I was trying to avoid. I showed an associate the app and he could not find it either, so he had to physically let them know I had arrived. I had my own bags and when the groceries were delivered to my car (20 minutes later) and I handed the delivery person my bags, he asked if I wanted him to bag the groceries for me. What kind of customer service is that???? As a senior citizen, why would he even ask me that? One of the items I specifically ordered was fresh cut turkey from the deli counter. The email I received stated that this item was out of stock and a substitution was made. They gave me pre-packckaged sliced turkey, which is something I never purchase. This service is a good idea but it's poorly executed. Need better customer service and user friendly app. read more

Service Service here has gone to hell. Heard that Kroeger is taking over at the first of the year. They started off by firing the on site security, the parking lot sweeper/cleaner, then fired the store manager and the assistant store manager. They eliminated the pharmacy app and are trying to merge it with the store app. I went to the store app to re-register. What a joke. It deleted all of my medications. I went to pick up a prescription today. There was four people in front of me. It took 40 min to see the clerk. (Only 1 on duty). There were at least 5 people behind me, of which 2 gave up and left. The service at the pharmacy has been going downhill for months. Talking with the others in line, no one was happy with new store management. At least bring back Kirk the assistant mana read more

Safeway notified me of a ready prescription so I went on my lunch hour only to find 19 people waiting in a very slow moving line. I felt so sorry for some very frail elderly people just trying to hang in there! Forget about the signs that say 'pick up here' and 'drop off here' because the pharmacy ignores them. I asked about the signs and was told 'we don't do that, just get in the line.' I decided to get out of the horrible line and go to the deli for a quick sandwich only to find yet another very long line with just one older clerk trying desperately to keep up. You couldn't help but notice that the other deli coworkers could see what was happening but nobody was stepping up to help her out. It literally took me 20 + minutes to get a sandwich with everyone else in line frustrated as well. I sat down to eat then returned to the pharmacy to find 18 people in line this time. What the heck has happened to Safeway?? There needs to be a better customer service management plan because this one simply doesn't work. read more

I'm actually fairly surprised at the low ratings for this particular Safeway. We've always had pleasant and successful trips here. Yesterday - we decided to do a pick-up order here and it couldn't have been more smooth. We used the Safeway app to place an order for some grocery basics and within an hour the items had been shopped for and packaged and were ready for pick-up. My husband loved that the could just pull up to a designated parking spot and our pre-ordered items were promptly brought out to us - by a friendly staff member. With the upcoming hectic holiday season - I highly recommend using their pick-up option - if you want to avoid busy aisles and lines. Trust. read more

Came to this Safeway nearest to our cabin this Safeway was nice and clean and the staff was nice I love the selection and the many varieties of seafood and the meat fruits and vegetables were definitely happy. Safeway is always more expensive but the quality is much more better. Hands down Safeway is the better grocery store. read more

This review is for the deli. I usually LOVE Safeways deli sandwiches and couldn't wait to grab one today. I came in and stood patiently by the sandwich counter. Although I saw 3 ladies behind the counter I couldn't get even an acknowledgment. I waited about 10 minutes before I walked over and asked for some to help me at the sandwich counter. I had to literally say " excuse me?" About 5 times before anyone even turned around. It was like they wanted each other to turn around so the other person would have to help me. Finally one of them says, I'll be right with you ma'am. Okay, so if you would've at least acknowledged me 10 minutes ago, I would've known someone was coming to help me. But since I had to hunt you down and ask for help, how would I to know you would be with me in a minute? Not to mention, I was on my lunch break and was on a time crunch. She comes over to make my sandwich and you can tell she's not happy about it. She makes my sandwich and tells me to go to the front to check out. I get back to the office and my bread is obviously at least day-old at best, it was hard to even bite into. I know darn well when she grabbed that loaf of bread she knew it was hard and she should not have been making a sandwich with it. What a waste of time and money. Totally disappointed and frustrated trying to buy a sandwich at their deli. First I had to wait 10 minutes to get someone to take my order (nobody was in line before me). The I gave deli clerk my simple order. He told me I would have to go buy the bread from the bakery, pay for it and bring it back to the deli. Then they would prepare and sell the sand. to me. Does anyone see what's wrong with this picture? I updated the store manager, who seemed horrified, then told I was going to Save Mart to get better service! I use to shop this store for many years, back when it was pak n save! I ran into grab organic cream and super greens. No cream, empty shelves, and EXPIRED super greens. I went to Safeway to get a simple pound of very lean hamburger. The shelves were empty. Only hamburger was the bulk & then it wasn't the 90% lean like I wanted. I asked a person behind the counter (after waiting several minutes to be helped) she said that is all they had & suggested using turkey. I was very disappointed in the service. My experience with Safeway, Sonora, pick-up was a nightmare. They for three days didn't fill my order or call me to communicate that there were problems with them fulfilling my order. I spoke with manager more than once who kept transferring me to the pickup department. They never filled my order and 7 days late I called credit card company to cancel charges I would not recommend this service as it was out of order for me. read more

This Safeway has so many people hanging out with their vehicles in the driveway. Good produce and meats selection. The deli has very good fresh baked chicken. Yummy for a quick munch, lunch. I like the three salad bowl deal for $2.99/each. Also the samples of poke at the meat counter! Large samples for free. read more

We were in Angel's camp on Christmas Day. Should have done research on whether the grocery stores in the area were going to be open which they weren't. Ended up driving to Sonora to this Safeway which was the only open within a reasonable distance. Thank goodness they were open. Your guys' service is second to none. I've never been to a more helpful supermarket... and I've shopped a lot of them; (Savemart, Raley's, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Ralph's, Albertsons, Costco, etc.) Never had a better experience than at Sonora's Safeway. The customer service is always with a smile and a friendly interaction. Other companies should be taking notes and finding team members with the heart for extraordinary service that is consistently modeled at this location. My days are brighter after each visit. Literally NEVER do curbside. After waiting over an hour, they "didn't have my order". After walking inside they magically found it, but it was missing over half of my items. They scrambled to fix it, which is nice, burned 1.5 hours of my day. The point of curbside is to be quick and save me time. read more

I requested curbside pickup and I wouldn't recommend it. It was difficult to find the curbside area in the dark. I placed my order the day before and some of the items I requested couldn't be fulfilled due to the fact that they were out of stock. I guess they ran out of the items I requested before 6PM? The person who delivered the items that were in stock had a face shield on, but no mask which made me very wary. The employee made me roll down my window and give them my ID. I wish they would have just loaded the items in my trunk and I could have just placed my ID up to the glass of the window. At other Safeway's I have had a better experience in which they loaded my items in the trunk, and I didn't need to roll down my window to give them my ID. read more

Sonora is not known for its grocery stores. SaveMart has a serious 'ick' thing going on, Grocery Outlet is too small, WalMart is, well, it's WalMart and the nearest Winco is 55 miles away. Now I'm ordinarily not a fan of foo-foo grocery stores: in my opinion they usually are nothing more than a repackaging of the same product at a much higher price. So I either like them to be a real high end player like Simon-David or at the opposite end of the spectrum like Winco or Grocery Outlet. Safeway of Sonora has altered that formula of mine a bit and that was no easy doing for any of the players that have tried. If you are looking for the best grocery store in Sonora, Safeway is it hands down. Yes, they can be a bit on the pricy side however I've noticed that their sales are often quite good and bring them into an overall premium price that is realistic and actually quite fair for their product. In fact, it's actually a bargain. (If you are looking for a premium grocer and expect to pay a bit more for that premium) First of all, the store is always spotless. I don't think I've ever seen a store this clean. As well, consistently well stocked and neat. Like OCD neat so it must be hell to be in charge of any an isle there what with sweating so much perfection expectation from management. The produce department is especially amazing. It's like the Nordstrom of Vegetables. Overall atmosphere is upscale without being pretentious; a quality quite difficult to manage but manage it well Safeway does. Open until 1am; which for Sonora is the equivalent of 24 hours. Safeway is likely the last to close in this town if one doesn't count the bars. Very impressed. That doesn't happen often for me with grocery stores so excellent job Safeway of Sonora! read more

This Safeway is clean, and the produce is always fresh, and so is the meat. Sonora is lucky to have this store. Walmart has weak produce, and Grocery Outlet has a bad selection (and bad management). If I have grocery shopping to do in Sonora, I go to Safeway. They have great deals in various departments every Friday, plus if you sign up for Just for You, there are all sorts of additional discounts you can get. Yesterday (Friday) I got 47% of the total bill, and I only bought things that I normally buy. I currently have a Just for You to get a sandwich for $2.99. I would have picked one up yesterday, but there was a line. Safeway loses a star because they need to hire more help the deli area. read more
