There is a newer lady that works here on the older side. I've always had good experiences with everyone I've known that works here, since I live about 5 minutes away full time. But this lady was very rude and demanded me very rudely to move out of the way cause she didn't know what she was doing. Worst customer service I've had in years. Went in to get water, ice, and a few other things. We were having trouble holding our items so we asked the clerk if we could set some at the checkout counter while we grabbed our last item. She said no because she didn't want us to "clutter" the place. Went to get ice from the freezer, a sign said 20 lb. bags were not for sale. There were 7 pound and 16 pound bags. I grabbed a 16 pound bag. She then yells at me saying "THOSE ARENT FOR SALE DIDNT YOU READ THE SIGN?" I immediately apologized and said the sign said 20 lb so I thought it was okay. She then said in what can only be described as a snotty voice, "Well I won't sell that one to you!" If the hostility weren't bad enough (and ignoring the extremely high prices), some of the food we bought was months expired. Great little spot to get your odds and ends, snacks, beer, a sandwich, etc. Has an old school general store feel in a way that is very charming. I used to come here as a kid in the summer to get candy and call my mom from the old pay phone out front while I was away at my horse trainers. Was fun to come back 15 years later to see what had changed and what stayed the same. Love this spot. Just got a little house in Camp Connell and this store is just a mile away! Perfect for a beer after skiing, a tasty panini, go to for random kitchen stuff, a good chat and live music on the weekends. They apparently do a beer garden and more awesome stuff in the summer. we've had our cabin for 25 years and camp connell has saved us so many times when we've been in a jam and so convenient when we are stuck on the mountain.. it's only a 5 minute drive but about a 30 minute walk. when my brother and i were younger we would make the walk to have wifi because it was the only place on the mountain and we had homework to do during vacation. now we go for drinks and concerts. it's the only place on the large mountain that's in between the far distance it is to get to the big store. you have to expect to pay higher prices when paying for convenience.. love this place and the people who run it! read more

Great spot to buy any essential items you may have forgotten at home. They also had a small selection of fresh veggies. Staff is incredibly friendly and offered us a slice of pizza every time we came in! I really enjoyed their hot apple cider. I wish we were staying longer, I'd love to have also tried their huckleberry ice cream and root beer floats. This will certainly be a stop for me when I visit again. read more

We stopped to see if we could get something to eat on our way up the road. Mr. Clean was a ray of sunshine. He told us that the pizza is outside with the live music and that we don't need to pay the cover fee if just ordering pizza. We asked if they had any food inside that we could order and he shook his head no. Then he told us that we can't park by the gas pump if we aren't getting gas. So we decided to get gas. Then he said we can't be there while we wait for the pizza even if we are getting gas. There was no where to park. We had our trailer attached to our car. Every spot possible was full with people there for the live music. They don't have an area for cars with trailers to park. So we pumped our gas and left. I've been here a couple of times when visiting family and it's always good vibes. Last night the family went over to grab some pizza (delicious btw!!), and lo and behold it was karaoke night outside on the patio! Johnny was the karaoke host and his beautiful singing voice lured us to the microphone like the pied piper of karaoke. We..were not as talented, but again, those good vibes is what it was all about and we had a BLAST! So what is it with my dad? When we are up at the cabin, every morning he has to go out and get both the Modesto Bee and the San Francisco Chronicle. He is going to have several days of both on his driveway when he gets home, and he needs both even up here. So it's about 20 frickin' degrees out and I'm bundling up to drive him through the snow to get his papers. We do this every morning. And I wouldn't change it for the world. We head to Camp Connell. We used to go to the Dorrington Store (across the highway and 100 yards further down) because my dad knew the owners. But they closed last year. And the "new" owners of Camp Connell general store used to live down the street from us - he's a plumber and she runs the store. Nice people. And they have a nice little coffee bar in there - she can whip you up a hot sugar free, non-fat, vanilla latte that will rival the best barista at starbucks. Am I starting to sound like my dad - going into all the little details you really don't care about? So we pop down, get a couple papers if they aren't sold out and maybe a latte or coffee, and mosey around the store checking out what tire chains cost these days, what t-shirts they have for sale, looking at the "bear" items (coffee mugs, signs, etc.). We may even get some cereal or other sundries that we are running low of. The prices are about what you would expect for a small store up in the mountains. And they have most of what you would need - food, booze, gloves, hats, batteries, etc. They have some souvenirs, sleds for the kids (or adults acting like kids), and maybe even a weather report for you. The building is pretty cool with its wood beams, plank floors, and big pot belly stove as you walk in. And like I said, they are darn friendly people. Anytime my dad wants to head down the hill for his morning papers, I'll drive him. read more

We've only shopped at their little convenience store. This is the closest little shop to our cabin so on early mornings or late evenings we go here instead of traveling into Arnold if it's just a quick item. They have a lot of items to choose from. So if you forget something at big trees and don't want to drive back this is the place to stop and get your missed items. They have some clothes collection and when my daughter was a baby and needed a hat, they had newborn/baby hats that we needed and not many places have baby hats! It was a knitted hat so the price was expected. But not bad. Stuff isn't badly priced for the area either, it's all around a great little store. As for the food/drink area, we've never stopped in long enough for that. read more

Stopped in at Camp Connell for a coffee and felt like I stepped back into the past. A gentleman held the door open for us with a joyful smile. Everyone was chatting as if they we all family. We talked to many of the people looking around the store. The store is full of local crafts and a little of everything else. The owner behind the counter was telling us about the band the next night and invited us back. Oh, and the coffee and food was excellent! I will never forget the lovely people who work here. So the story is that we were on our way home from our 3 week trip in the Southwest. Then on the last day, my husband convinced our other friends that we should do one more off-road trail. So we ended up doing the Alpine Lake to Spicer Reservoir trail, which 5 years ago would have only taken 1.5 hours, but took us 6 hours to get out. My friends, this trail has gotten so much worse, since the Jeeps love to come on this. It was also a bad idea because our friend had to get winched out at the end because of major boulders in the way. Long story short, we had to get air for our tires and came here because it was the closest place on the GPS. When we got there, there was no air, but we stayed because they had beer inside and an outdoor patio with live music. Since we came so late (9PM), they told us they ran out of all the chicken they made that night. At this point, it was too late to leave to get dinner at another place and we were so tired from all the stacking of the rocks on the trail, that we just improvised. I told the lady our story that we got stuck in the trail for 6 hours with our babies and she helped us microwaved our quiche and 3 cans of chilli we bought from their fridge. She gave us plates and utensils to eat with. I asked if they did this regularly, and she said no. All the local folks sitting at the bar area was joking that she would've invited us to her house and made us ribs if it wasn't so late. We felt so special. On the other hand, we got one too many cans of chilli and were asking everyone in the store if they wanted some, but we got no takers in the end. Good thing I didn't buy a second quiche. Whew! My only regret is not having cash at a time like this. All of us were out of cash and we had to scramble to find pennies and quarters in our pockets to give her. I was so sad when I left, because that lady was so nice and I wasn't able to give her extra cash for her generous hospitality. I'll be back, I promise! read more

Camp Connell General Store is definitely your small town store. It offers a combination of gift store, grocery store, restaurant and gas station services. The gift area is in the front on the left with cute woodsy, mountain items (probably for the tourists like me who buys something every time I come in!). They have all of your basic grocery items like milk, cheese, cooking items, beer and wine. The restaurant area is on the right side serving food and drinks (where many of the locals seemed to come in for a little celebration), with a few tables and wi-fi (per the sign). The store is not big and the prices are not cheap, but hey what do you expect for a side of the road store trying to make it in a small town. Bonus for those without cell reception or landlines at the cabin --- A PAY PHONE! (When's the last time you saw one of those?!) We vacation in Camp Connell regularly, and this store has it all!! We oftentimes forget something at the supermarket, and don't feel like driving back down the mountain.. & we can always find it at the general store. They always have the bare necessities, and a small produce selection. And they now have Wi-fi connection, so you can check your email and get a beer on tap or a cup of joe, while warming up from the cold outside, and chatting it up with the locals. Donna and Tommy are so friendly. It is always nice to see them! And, they have some really cute souvenir stuff. I sport my Camp Connell sweatshirt on a regular basis, and my kids have Camp Connell jammies. What can I say, I Love this place!! read more
