We usually go to the candy store in Columbia so when we stopped in the Murphys, we were happy to see they had a Nelson's! Their chocolate is so good. My husband always gets some milk chocolate malt balls. For nearly 20 years, we've never found better malt balls in all of our travels. This store is so nice and typically less crowded than the Columbia store. We enjoyed chatting with the nice lady who worked there. read more

WOW their homemade fresh fruit jellies are AMAZING the flavors are outstanding, and you can tell they used real fruits because the blackberry one had seeds in them! All the goodies you could ever want (and some that you didn't even know existed!), Nelson's covers it all. Old school (candy rocks) to new school (sour gummies) and everything in between (truly superior ribbon candy). The folks behind the counter were extra nice during the pandemic, and this store is taking incredible precautions with limited numbers allowed inside the store at any one time, and masks absolutely required. Angela, at the Columbia location took my order, special ordered some beautiful baskets and created a beautiful bunch of baskets for me. I was walking by on saturday along that main street. Suddenly my daughter and husband went inside. To my surprise, the candy store is very nice and look very upscale , nice wood counter. Their lollipoes is amazingly pretty. I uploaded 2 photos to share with you yelper. I ask "where is candy" made. Apparently, they are all local made (columbia town). I am very impressed, and go to that candy store twice (2 different days). Hightly recommend to buy back some of those candies as gift(since I go camping in that area). read more

Along with the ice cream shop and toy store, Nelson's has become a yearly stop for our family when visiting Murphys on our camping trips to Big Trees. The kids are always excited to come here and the store is fragrant of chocolate and sugar which is always a nice change from campfire --which is probably what we smell like when we come in. They have a variety of confections to choose from and they make much of the main display in-house (I think) and then they have a section of gummies that are in bulk containers but clearly sourced from other companies. I won't say anything about that as it would be like saying Vons makes really good Lucky Charms when it's General Mills who makes it and Vons that sells it. The chocolate certainly has an old world taste to it of harder times 80 or 90 years ago when this store first opened and hopefully they are using the same recipes so we don't forget how confections were made before we started adding every chemical sweetener and preservative to them. Is it amazing Belgian? No. But if you are coming here expecting them to use high quality chocolate, you're in the wrong town. This isn't West L.A. Finally notes, the staff are wonderful and love kids sincerely and not just cause they work in a candy store. I love coming here and look forward to many more years of doing so on these camping trips. read more

This is the cutest little candy store in the cutest little town! I stopped in here while walking around Murphy's one morning and I was surprised at how much unique different chocolate dipped stuff they had. I loved the Carmel sea salts dipped in chocolate as well as the different chocolate dipped fruits. If your in town make sure to stop in here. read more

Whenever I enter one, I feel like a little girl entering the world of Willie Wonka, minus a golden ticket. I feel so fortunate to have a wonderful candy store that I love to frequent. There are so many wonderful goodies in Nelson's. They make their own chocolates and many other candy treats. I love the gummi candies like Swedish Fish and Coca Cola bottles. An Ol' Tyme Candy Shoppe definetly! Jars of hard candies, shelves of pre-packed handmade candies. Homemade brittles - peanut, macadamia nut and coconut! YUM on the Coconut, I didn't have any left to bring home after this weekend. A counter of chocolate dipped candies - almonds, raisens, macadamia nuts in white or milk. Peppermint Chews - hard to find - it starts off as a hard peppermint candy then as your mouth warms it up it becomes chewy (not something my dentist would like to read, especially after a root canal last month - but SO worth it!) Oh FUDGE! Yum, delisious creamy fudge! Traditional fudge with nuts was so creamy, smooth and the perfect tender walnuts. But my new love is Peanut butter fudge - Oh Happy Day! I never had it before and it was divine! I wanted to tell DH that he wouldn't like it but I almost squeeled in delight as I tasted it. There is also Divinity, and I did get a sample of it because I never had it before and ya know what - I wasn't missing out on much. Chocolate, especially dark, is most definitely one of my vices. So when my best friend, Jonathan R., and I were visiting the quaint little town of Murphys, I had to go inside to check Nelson's out. The tiny store was quite crowded, and the 2 women behind the counter were doing their best to take care of all the customers. When it was my turn to make my selections, I felt like I was accommodated quickly, but also with care. Everything I chose tasted amazing. My only complaint is they are a tad pricey, but since this type of purchase is a rare indulgence for me, it was okay. A walk through Nelson's is like a brief glimpse of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory offerings... they have jars full of all of your standard current day candies in the back, homemade fudge to gawk at and truffles to drool over in side cases, but the real treats are in the front- pecan logs ($3.95) are devilshly tempting maple nougat centers coated in caramel and rolled into big pecan chunks. The peanut and coconut brittles are also not to miss- the chocolate covered bags (1/4 lb $4.95) was simply delectable and was devoured by our group before we even got into the car! Wow and yum! Nuf' said? Almost. The handmade candies here are totally amazing. We had some jellies cubes in a few different flavors and they were all delicious and none too sweet like the homemade ones can be. I also had rocky road - d'lish! You never out-grow that wonderful feeling of being a "kid in a candy shop." This shop is the best in every regard: great candies (both sweet and sugar-free), wonderful seasonal specialties, beautiful gift boxes and packaging, and very friendly service. The fudge, toffee, turtles and almond bark are all made in the Columbia store and are always fresh as can be. While Murphys has an abundance of wine tasting rooms, there is only one candy shop in town. I recommend stopping at Columbia Candy and buying their deep dark chocolate before hitting the wineries. Nothing backs a good Pinot like quality chocolate. read more

Nelson's is good, locally made candies. The chocolates are nothing to sweep you off your feet, but for a small town to have such a delight is really nice. The window displays are always creative and fun. The customer service is attentive and pleasantly warm too. Overall I'd give Nelson's a 8 out of 10.
