Yes indeed Columbia Kates Bakery has been around for a few years and whenever I would come out here my and my cousins make it a NECESSITY to get her amazing cinnamon rolls. They are by far not only the best in Columbia, but the whole area! They probably even beat Cinnabon they're so good! The workers here are absolute sweethearts!! And it's perfect timing that they open so early so I can get a nice sweet treat with my coffee in the morning!! These are fabulous!!! She also has a Columbia Cates Tea House which I actually have yet to eat there but it's also adorable and that one opens at 11 am I believe so I'll have to come a little later to try that one too and get the full experience!! The Ambiance is adorable!!! It's all white with cute lacey accents! The girly vibes get me EVERY TIME! It's like stepping into a Disney princess bakery, and the tea house is that way too! I love this place but when I had the cinnamon roll it was disappointing. It was early afternoon and a lot of baked goods were sold out. You have to come super early if you want to get what you like. The roll was a bit dry and cakey.. The service was exceptional. Not only did the employee add extra frosting but he also heated it! Now that's service! It's a small bakery yet popular. We went to Kate's Tea House for afternoon tea at 3:00 pm. There were few customers in the tea house. The atmosphere was very nice and the food was excellent, however the service was extremely slow. The only staff were the two owners. No wait staff. Our wait was over half hour to get our food and then when we were served only one order of the scones arrived when we asked for one order each. When we left, I had to walk up to the desk to get our bill. The owner said sorry about that, I was washing dishes. I signed the bill NOT ADDING A TIP and we left. When we got home and went on line we noticed the owner had added $3.00 to our bill as a tip. This is unacceptable. read more

I really hope to give this place a better review in the future because the food is really good. When coming into the restaurant you notice that it is cute and decorated like a traditional tea house. Then you sit down and notice an awkwardness throughout the room because they have NO music playing. We sit, and wait, and wait for someone to attend us whether that be a greeting and a glass of water or somebody to just tell us that somebody will be with us in a minute. We got no treatment what so ever. Then the waitress came to the table next to us, who hadn't even been given menus if they like to order. It was confusing to us because we had sat down minutes before and felt ignored. It was raining and there was only seating inside. But two servers couldn't take care of the amount of people they had. I have been coming to Kate's bakery for sometime. I bought scones yesterday and they were so dry not long ago I bought scones the next day the scones were still moist. The apricot scones are my favorite and the blueberry is also delicious. It's a hit and miss what you will get. The owner is not paying attention but the customers are. Columbia doesn't have a lot too offer in the morning as it is. It's disappointing that the quality isn't there either. And the charming out door seating area needs to be cleaned up. What happened I remember when the students from the college would be in the kitchen baking those were good days. read more

I love everything this bakery has! My favorites are the scones, pot pies, and pasties. They are the best I've ever had. I live 50 minutes away and try to get there once a month to replenish my supply. I keep them in my freezer till I use them. The owners are also very friendly. I love Colombia State Park! read more

The food here is nothing short of amazing. All of their baked goods, dessert, salads, lunch and dinner items have never disappointed. I'm a huge fan of the macaroons, runsas that they sell at the farmers market, and the quiche. Their scones are so delicious with the lemon curd and scone cream. Their scones are not super dry like most places - which I like. Although it's a bit pricey, every now and then it's a nice treat. Love the outdoor seating and vintage vibe. read more

Praline pecan pear pie is the best item they make. It's light and delicious, perfectly sweet and flavorful without being too sweet. It's a great balance, pears are cooked perfectly, pecan crumb topping is crunchy and the crust is amazing. Best pie of my life. Breakfast quiches are wonderful as well. Prices are a bit high but worth it for this semi-annual treat. Columbia is a cute little town and we enjoy visiting and seeing the history they setup in all the museums. Great for kids. read more

The people are always really nice when we come and when we manage to get pastries they're great. My low rating is that they never have anything when we come in, ever. I don't know what time people line up to get pastries but it must be early. We've gone several times on a Sunday around 8-9 to get breakfast and they are always out of everything. The best destination lunch / brunch in town. The orange almond red roobios tea is the best tea on the menu. Try their delicious chicken pot pie or their sandwich sampler with scone of the day. Or try their delicious and HUGE French macaron. Their chicken salad sandwich is made on their in-house homemade bread available at their sister bakery across the street. I love having my birthday lunch here every year. Their food never disappoints and it is in a building that's been around since the gold rush! Tried again today at around 8:30 this morning and no cinnamon rolls, again. This places opens at 7 am I think. It didn't show up when we searched for breakfast on yelp but it is open. We were wandering around coffee deprived and hungry, just about to leave town to find food, when we found it at 9 am. It was a glorious find. Fueled our playtime in the labyrinth and gold panning (which we might have missed to search for food outside this tiny town). The orange marmalade cinnamon roll was absolutely phenomenal. Inventive and delicious. The child said his regular cinnamon roll was divine (and he likes to try them whenever he can - a bit of a snob about them). Huge, soft, and squishy loaded with buttery cinnamon filling. These are the doughy kind (our favorite), not the flaky kind. There might have been a fight over the middle... (if you like cinnamon rolls, you know what I'm talking about.) Also tried the dough wrapped egg thing that I can't remember the name of. Perfectly seasoned inside with a very nice dough on the outside. Wish more places had something like this. Be fairly warned though - I couldn't finish it. We took a bag of day old scones for our breakfast at the campground the next morning and they did not disappoint. Two days old and still really, really good. Perfect texture and flavor. ...wish we could have tried the apricot ones. read more

I love freshly made baked goods and I was looking to try something new in the area. We looked them up on Yelp and they seemed to have pretty good reviews. They were the only place open in Columbia when we got there and they were easy to find. They have a cute store but we wish they had more of a selection. The bear claw and cinnamon roll were yummy, but they did not have too many more things to chose from. It might have been because we got there at about 10am and maybe they had already been picked clean. I did notice that they had a tea house next door that offers afternoon tea, so I am definitely going to give that a try. Some review stated that they were very pricey but I did not find this to be the case. For home baked goods, they were right on the mark. I will try them again, for sure. read more

This place is really cute. We sat in the backyard area and it has a nice seating area. The only downside is there are a lot of spider webs, kinda made the place seem a little unkempt. The food here is really good. The kids had pb&j which is the best pb&j I've ever tasted. It warrants the price tag. We had the veggie sandwiches which were bomb. The service however is SLOW. Not sure if it was the kitchen or our waitress, but we were there for almost an hour and there was only two other small parties in the same area as us. We waited 15 minutes for the check after finishing the food. Eventually we just got up and paid inside. If you're not in a rush you should try this place out. read more

This review is for the cinnamon roll alone. I opted for one from the day-old section and that was $3. Not sure how one of the other reviewers got them for $1 but what a deal that would be! This cinnamon roll is AMAZING. I actually ate it the day after I bought it so technically it became a 2 day-old roll. I put it in the microwave when I got back home to the Bay Area, and it was so gooey and delicious. I'm always on the hunt for a good cinnamon roll and I like this one because of its yeasty goodness, and it wasn't super sweet like others I've had. My only regret was that I didn't get another one, since I ended up having to share with my husband and 5 year old. Next time I'm in the area, I'll be sure to stop by for a couple of rolls. I only wish they were open until 5 like the rest of the stores around the area. I tried going back close to 5 to snag a couple apricot cookies but found that they closed at 4. read more

The desserts here are wonderful! We ordered macarons, cupcakes, lemon bars, and apricot scones for our wedding, and they were demolished by our guests. We received so many complements about the desserts, and they were literally all gone by the end of the night (I thought I had ordered too much since we already had three cakes but clearly I was mistaken). The owner or manager with the HAT was so nice and sweet and made sure we were promptly taken care of. My son left his backpack outside at the patio.
