Salted pretzel and cheese
Tiffany Y.

The Pretzel Shop opened in 1927, and its employees bake hand-twisted pretzels in a brick oven from 1872! The pretzels come in different sizes and in many flavors: plain, salted, sugar-cinnamon, garlic, parmesan, garlic-parmesan, tomato-basil, jalapeno-cheddar, parmesan-bacon, and pepperoni-mozzarella. Dips include nacho cheese, cheddar cheese, honey mustard, spicy mustard, ranch, icing, and caramel. In addition, the menu includes many salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and other baked goods (e.g., gobs, muffins, brownies, and cookies). Catering is available. My husband and I stopped here one time. He bought several pretzels with cheese. The employees did a good job serving us, and the pretzels and cheese tasted good.

This place was so nice we had to stop twice on our 3 days in Pittsburgh! Reddit brought The Pretzel Shop to my attention when I was looking for hidden gems of places to snag a cheap meal. The food was delicious and you can get lots of it for a good price. The family that owns it was very friendly and patient with us as we made our selections, which took some time since there were lots of options. We discussed the appropriate amounts of garlic on a pepperoni roll when I told them I appreciated that theirs was pure bread, haha. It's a small place with a few tables outside, so be prepared to either take to go or eat in your car or on a walk. It's also cash only, but they do have an ATM. We will definitely make a point to stop in on our next trip to Pitt.

It's been 20+ years since my last visit to the Pretzel Shop. This is a true South Side staple. I'm not typically in the area during the week early, but I took advantage of being nearby. I stopped in around 8am on a Friday morning. I bought a half dozen pretzels for $4.80 (cash only) and was on my way. I remember working daylight in the Southside back in 2002 and would stop here regularly for lunch. This is a staple you want to visit. The pretzel's still outstanding after all these years. Glad I was able to make a quick visit happen.

Great spot for a hot fresh pretzel at an amazing price! You can even go around back to see the prep process, a fun drop in if hosting tourists in Pittsburgh or just exploring the Southside. Pretzels themselves are yummy, you can taste the freshness! They are a bit "healthier" in taste than I normally go for (I've got a bit of a butter addiction) so not my favorite soft pretzel but absolutely worth the stop in!

Clean pretzel bakery. Helpful and friendly staff. Pretzels of all kinds. Always fresh.

I herd great things about these pretzels and was in the area and decided to give them a try. I am always in the mood for a good pretzel too bad these where not good. I was a bit disappointed the pretzels where cold and where not really soft. I thought they had a weird taste to them and for all the hype I herd I was very disappointed. The store only takes cash which is a bit of a downer as i like using a credit card. The price for a pretzel was very reasonable at 80 cents each. I have to say they do not hold a torch to Philly Pretzel Factory. I have to say I would not go again for any reason as they just where not good. The staff where friendly and helpful. I am sorry to say i would not recommend this shop to any one. I generally would give one star but the service was good and the staff where friendly so I will give it 2 stars.

Wow! I grew up with a pretzel shop down the street but this place is so much better. Wonderful service and what a history. If you love pretzels then you must stop here. The pretzels are so good! When I am in the area I will stop in to stock up. Highly recommend this place. So friendly and helpful.

This place is amazing! It is a pretty dense pretzel. I got the Buffalo chicken sandwich on a Thursday for $4.50. It was so worth it! Came with lettuce and tomato. I'm sure the service is great, a friend picked up my order. The place is nice and offers a lot of variety. It's good price and pretty good food.

The Pretzel Shop is a South Side staple and a must-visit for both locals and tourists. It's one of those places I walked past everyday for years and regrettably never tried until recently. These are some of the best, heartiest soft pretzels in Pittsburgh. What I enjoy even more are their warm sandwiches. They're so delicious and prices are very affordable - one of my favorite lunch spots in the area.

The Pretzel Shop in South Side tastes like my childhood. The pretzels are still baked in a wood fire oven in the back of the property in small batches and there is always a line of customers. Make sure to have cash. Great to take to the park for a snack, as there is no indoor dining.

I stopped over here for lunch first before attending a YELP event here. The business is strictly take out and cash only. They do have an ATM on the premises. Since I hadn't had lunch yet I wanted to grab one of their pretzel sandwiches and then grab the goodies from the event to take home with me. I had previously looked over the menu online and was hoping to get their Barbecue chicken pretzel sandwich since it was listed as a special. Well, that item is off the menu. Anyway the counter lady offered me grilled chicken instead so I had that with all the fixings and some honey mustard that they use for dipping sauce for the pretzels. It's amazing that my sandwich was just under $5.00! A first for me in scoring something that cheap. Got a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. Cookies are regular sized. Nothing fancy about them but they do have a nice selection. Pretzels here are reasonably priced and you can get different toppings for them such as cinnamon and of course different sauces. You can even get pretzel rolls filled with such things like pepperoni. They even make a hummus pretzel now if you aren't into meat. Pretzels are marked as vegan so that good to know. They sell bottled beverages in a refrigerator on one side and Tee shirt on the other. They have various baked goods ranging from cookies to other desserts. They even serve breakfast sandwiches here. I asked if I could eat my sandwich towards the back of the store since I didn't feel like dragging my goodies 5 blocks away and was told I could. I stood by the condiment section which had plenty of napkins. I must admit the chicken was a decent size and so tasty too and of course messy! The pretzel seemed to lack flavor which is where the dipping sauces might have helped but I enjoyed the honey mustard that I ordered with the sandwich. The pretzel isn't overly salted either. Nevertheless it made for quick a filling lunch! As others have mentioned the pretzels were not hot but they were still soft to enjoy as a sandwich. They do catering here and have a special menu for that. I noticed they now have a strawberry pretzel jello here along with some salads. Their baked goods are made in house. I did have a chocolate chip cookie for dessert and must say it was very good and quite fresh. It was indeed worth a visit here if you are in the neighborhood. Located on E Carson St near the Birmingham bridge, metered street parking is available.

I think we came at a kind of off time of day because the pretzels were cold and kind of hard, but they still tasted good and the dips were what we expected. I'd suggest making a trip towards the beginning of the day!

Amazing pretzels!!!…read more Super friendly and polite customer service with warm, comforting pretzels and the most amazing dips ever. In addition to being organic and vegan I also appreciate the fact that they aren't too salty like many other soft pretzels are. These pretzels also reheat well in the toaster oven which is great when you are already stuffed but want to take a pretzel to go. I especially recommend the cinnamon butter dip which has a very unique flavor. I've never had anything like it. It is reminiscent of cinnamon ice cream in texture and flavor without actually being cold or too sweet. You also don't mind using a lot of it as it is light and fluffy in mouthfeel.  They must never take the tasty cinnamon butter away!!! They also have a tasty mustard dip which is a condiment I often recommend to people as a Dietitian due to its many health benefits. As the only local pretzel place in Pittsburgh to serve both organic and vegan pretzels this is the *perfect* vendor to any local party you are having - particularly events that have the need to be vegan and/or organic as people become increasingly concerned with their health and the environment. I highly recommend contacting Connor today or ordering a pretzel from him if you see his pretzels at an event! :)

We were warmly greeted and seated…read morequickly on a Saturday night, and somehow scored the coveted window seat, which turned dinner into dinner and a live episode of "North Side People Watching." We started with a couple of beers and worked our way through the bread basket while trying to decipher the menu and restrain ourselves from ordering one of everything. The basket came with assorted rolls, sweet cabbage, applesauce, and butter, basically enough to make us temporarily forget we still had entrées coming. I ordered the Kase Spätzle: spätzle noodles tossed in a creamy blend of chicken broth and melted Gouda cheese. It was supposed to come topped with buttered breadcrumbs, which sadly never made it to the party. Would they have elevated the dish? Maybe. Did I still scrape the plate like I hadn't eaten in days? Absolutely. It was basically German mac and cheese giving me a warm hug. I swapped the house salad for braised red cabbage, because balance. Hubby went with the Sauerbraten, beef marinated in a century-old family recipe from southern Germany and served with potato pancakes, because if you're going German, you commit. Nothing about the plate screamed "fine dining," but everything tasted hearty, comforting, and made with care. Was it fancy? No. Did we leave happy, full, and slightly considering lederhosen? Yes. Great night all around.

Very few places can cook pork as well as Max's, granted nobody wants undercooked pork chops, but so few places now days can't get the perfect point between undercooked and dried out chewiness. Red cabbage, outstanding! German Potato salad OH MY Goodness! The ambiance makes you feel like you're in the early 1900s. There were so many different generations there. Mom and Dad's with early elementary age kids, young couples, 3 generations out for a family dinner, a dad and his teenage son and us. But the best part was the service. The hostess and our waitress were just so good it seemed like we were having dinner at home and these magical ladies made everything so comfortable. Yeah it was a great birthday dinner!
