I hate to write a negative review for a local business because I want Longmont businesses to thrive, but this place has been a mess every time I've come in. It's mostly about the service, not the food - to the point that I've come in multiple times and not been served and had to go somewhere else to find a meal. It's one thing for the place to be popping and servers to be a little too busy for attentive service during Miss Jessica's drag trivia. It's another to be unable to find any server anywhere around 2 hours before close when there is nobody in the restaurant. The food I've had has been fine, but nothing notable and a couple of the fried dishes the table shared at trivia were pretty greasy. I will keep trying every so often and hope things turn around for them, but it's not on my list of places to send people or bring friends who come to town. read more

We stopped by The Passenger for lunch on a Tuesday and were immediately struck by the space. It's in a beautiful old building with a really cool vibe and character. When we arrived, we were one of the only tables in the restaurant, which made us a little unsure at first. I ordered the omelette and my husband had the chicken Caesar salad. Both were perfectly fine, but nothing that really stood out as memorable. The service, however, was very good, and the owner came by our table to greet us, which was a thoughtful touch. I have never given a ONE but last night's experience was a warning in the making, especially when it comes to The Mussels. As great fans, the dried out, practically sauce-less specimens served dismayed us. Nearly one-quarter of them were closed, inedible both practically and healthwise. When we asked for more broth, we were served a tiny amount about 15 minutes later. Asking for tiny forks received a blank stare. When we informed the wait staff about the many closed shells, we were told we could get a few more. A fully 20 minutes later, after we were well ready to leave this dreadful place, a reluctant bowl appeared. We then asked them to remove The Worst Mussels Ever off our bill but were denied. Beautful space in the old Dicken Opera House. Like instagram worthy beautiful. We ordered some mocktails that were very tasty. We decided on tapas so we could get numerous different plates. Everything was so good and the food came out quickly. As we were leaving the manager/owner came over and explained their passport rewards program and stamped our 'passport' according to the dishes we ordered since they came from all over the world. When we walked in we were hesitant as we were the only ones in the restaurant, not a good sign! Our sever Shayla was friendly and super sweet, she took our drink order, we had a glass of wine. She returned with our wine and told us all about the building and the restaurant and a little about the owner. She said we could walk around and explore so we took our glasses of wine and explored the different rooms, pretty cool place! The menu is eclectic, foods from around the world. I ordered the beef chimichurri and the hubby got the ghost burger. Both were delicious! We were pleasantly surprised. Mother's Day brunch was not at all impressive, everything was quite ordinary, nothing special or unique. The price at $85 per adult was too much for the unimpressive choices. We stopped in for lunch one day, and it was slow; however there was one table being served at the front of the house. The person on staff, which appeared to be the only one there, looked at us, and continued conversing with the occupants of the table. We stood at the host booth for another 10 minutes until it was clear that our business wasn't important to them and left. The brunch place down the street was more than happy to take our money and seated us promptly. What gives? No greeting? We went for one of the Blind Mystery Menu dinners on NYE and can't wait to go back! Each course was absolutely delicious (we chose the vegan option but the meat eaters sounded pretty happy too) and the whole experience course my course sensing textures and detecting flavors (which are out of this world)while blindfolded was something so new and different and yes you can eat soup line folded better than you think ;) We're excited to go back on a regular night too. This was our first visit since this restaurant rebranded from Roots to The Passenger. We arrived about 4pm on a Saturday and were off to a bit of a rocky start with the service initially. It took 5 minutes for anyone to notice we'd entered. Once we were seated, we both ordered a drink to sip on while browsing the tapas menu. The happy hour is a good deal, and we liked all the drinks we tried (house Merlot, Taj Mahal, and the First Lady). Unfortunately, my partner's drink came right away. The waitress said she would check on mine. She came back quickly empty handed and asked if we wanted to order. I didn't really want to yet since I still had no beverage, but we ordered 1 tapa and figured we could keep browsing. The tapa came out a few minutes later ... still no drink. We were prompted to order entrees. My partner said we'd prefer to wait until my drink arrived before ordering more. This was when the waitress mentioned they were short that day. I get it! She was friendly, doing her best, and obviously does not control the bar by herself. We ordered two more tapas, a couple more drinks as the evening went on, and a dessert. Everything we had was really delicious! There were a couple of instances of different servers, bringing food and drinks to the table that weren't ours. I think this was just a side effect of the staff being really busy. This place definitely deserves a chance. The food and drinks were both fantastic (the pretzel, poutine, chefs board, and the traveling donut - curry flavor! Amazingly good!). The service could use a little bit of work, but I think that is true a lot of places given the macro environment around finding people right now. The staff they do have are doing their best! They also have a cute frequent flyer program, so make sure you ask for your passport and start collecting stamps! I hope one day they will be able to expand the menu to offer more Arabian and Indian food options. Mezze would be great on the tapas menu! Note: There is a 3% fee added to each check for the kitchen. Service was good with several wait staff on hand. All dishes for all patrons came out at once for a blindfold test. We liked the idea of guessing what was in the dish and it was fun to do so! Interesting space - had a bank vault and a picture of a world map which was cool - it used to be Dickens Opera House. Update: I just removed one star because of the 22% sustainability charge that no one ever pointed out. Last night my family and I tried the new Roots location in the revamped Dicken's Tavern. While the space itself needs some tweaking, there were definitely highlights worth mentioning. The service was excellent - our server was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and great with the kids. The creative takes on classic dishes also showed promise. The salmon and khichdi in particular were well-executed and nicely flavored. However, the overall ambiance missed the mark for me. The decor and music felt a bit like a random pub, lacking the charming, upscale vibe I expected. Drinks were on the pricier side and leaned very sweet. I tried the "Taj Mahal" which tasted more like fruit juice than a craft cocktail. The menu font also made dishes hard to read. While there are definitely areas for improvement, I see potential in Roots. With some refinements to the atmosphere and bar program, and keeping the excellent service and interest in global flavors, they could really find their groove. I'm willing to give brunch a try to see if daytime brings a different feel. I hope they make a few tweaks because the food itself shows promise, and I'd love to see this concept succeed in the neighborhood. read more

This is a cute restaurant tucked away in a neighborhood in Broomfield. The menu is global tapas and they have different sections dedicated to Latin food, Indian dishes, New American cuisine, Asian food, Southern cuisine, and more. It seems like everything is housemaid and you can tell the chef put a lot of love into the dishes. They also have a beer, wine, and cocktail menu. We sat outside in the spacious courtyard and our server JJ was very personable and took excellent care of us. While we were outside we witnessed a hawk try to snatch up a bunny! Thankfully the bunny got away but it was like watching the nature channel as we ate! Super cool! I recommend this spot for large groups who want to share tapas and try different things. Interesting restaurant, in the middle of a neighborhood in a former Masonic lodge with an odd country club vibe. Roots' food is small plates / tapas style -- though, as we did it, mostly treating a dish as an individual course. The dishes come out as ready, not in any kind of order, which was easier to coordinate and, in theory, bring things out fresh, but made the service a little chaotic. In general, the food across the ambitious menu was good. My parmesan truffle fries were flavorful but not quite fresh. My lamb vindaloo had good flavor to it, it a bit dry. The Korean beef tacos, Brussels sprout caesar salad, and mushroom leek grilled cheese sandwich got kudos all around. The dessert menu had a good selection. The vegan "death by chocolate" cake and the bread pudding received high marks. Decent cocktail, beer, and wine list, though they were out of some of the wines. On the whole, a decent, if a bit pricey dinner. We'll most likely be back again. read more

We came here for a girls celebratory night and I could not be any more pleased with our experience. Our server, Lily, has been the best server I've ever had in my dining experience in Colorado. What made her different from other servers was her honesty, attention to our table, and authenticity. She's genuinely sweet and helpful! Whenever I go back, I want her as my server again LOL that's how much we all loved her. We had a table of 8. We were told we could have complimentary champagne, chai, or hot chocolate. We all got the chai and it was seriously the best Chai I've ever had in my life. They change the menu every season and they also have a chefs favorite menu where they let their employees make the recipes/dishes! Super cool! All the food options were delicious. Some came in small portions and others we shared. Prices are adequate for the quality of food. You can tell they make everything fresh and use quality veggies + meat. The drinks were amazing! They also had really good nonalcoholic drink options. Wine selection was broad. And the atmosphere inside the restaurant is super cute! We came to this location primarily for the igloo reservation. The brunch/lunch rates are really reasonable, but it does warm up in the tent, so I suggest going in the evening or wearing layers you can shed on a cool or cloudy day. My favorite part was that we were completely alone in the outdoor area, and that level of privacy is exactly why we enjoy the igloos in the first place. We plan to come back of an evening next weekend. The food was very good, but not GREAT, which is why I've given 4 stars instead of 5. My eggs were over cooked but everything else was pretty good ; but nothing particularly memorable. Their bottomless mimosas are a great price as well! I would recommend trying this spot; at least for the igloo experience! The indoor area is also very nice ; the outside of the building does not really reflect the aesthetic inside. read more

It was my first time there, and my second Thanksgiving meal for the day, and so very much enjoyed the dinner that I finished all of the generous portions! All of us in my party were delighted with the very creative cuisine, great attention to detail, attentive staff, and diligence in providing a gluten free meal that was in every way exceptional! The ambiance is friendly and un-pretentious with warm brick and beautiful wood accents, along with well-curated artwork! The Dickens building has such historic charm! It was easy to have comfortable conversation, as well, with spacious booths and and good sound acoustics. Tables are also available. The inside is huge as well. You can do an intimate dinner for two or a huge wedding! They have been catering for 18 years. Madhu the wife is the Chef and Vipul the husband takes care of the rest. Prob you'll see him more. They're very specific about what their vision is. They want to present an eclectic fusion cuisine. This spot is geared towards a Pre- paid dining experience. It's great in that you just set up your day, time and order your food, pay and indicate where you want to dine. Indoor or outdoor and show up! This husband and wife team is a smart move. Kudos! Roots is a beautiful event space that has been converted into a restaurant to make it through these tough times. I love outdoor "patio" -- which is actually a large patio and lawn and gazebo that are fenced in and have tables set up on for dining. It's great for keeping large amounts of social distancing while dining outside. We had brunch here, but they also do happy hour and dinner. I was a big fan of the chicken and waffles, which wasn't greasy at all -- as well as the $15 bottomless mimosas. Also love the desserts: bread pudding is always a hit, plus their basil blackberry ice cream is perfectly herbaceous and refreshing. This was our first time trying Roots in Longmont and were super disappointed with the food. Service was great, and the ambiance and location (we sat outside on the patio) were nice as well. The food however was not good. Our table ordered the mussels, which were over cooked and tough with no flavor; the beef chimichurri which was also flavorless and the chimichurri only tasted like parsley only; the Spanish gnocchi lacked flavor and the sauce was watery; the Murg Makhani was the best dish of the bunch but the amount of chicken on the dish wasn't worth the $25 dollars. The drinks we ordered were quite delicious, but unfortunately, don't think we'll be back. There are too many other great places in the area with better tasting food! read more

We had a lovely dinner at roots the weekend after thankagiving. It was nice to do small plates after over indulging for the holiday. They had options for everyone including vegan/vegetarian. It appears to be a lovely event space and they keep the restaurant open when they aren't booked out. It works and I'd definitely go back especially if they chef rotates that menu seasonally!
