Mayumi Maeda found me on hairapprenticeNYC and reached out to me via e-mail. She told me she does color training only on Tuesdays so I booked her about 3-4 weeks ahead of time. Afterwards I did a lot of background research on the salon and stylists, coming to the conclusion this place should be perfect! I work in Williamsburg and I'm just horrible at directions so this Greenpoint salon was no exception lol. To the normal eye it's honestly easy to find, but I'm just an idiot when it comes to new places haha. My appointment was at 10am but getting lost and stuck in the G train I arrived at 10:30 feeling very apologetic. They were nonetheless amazing and I was also greeted by Jenny's french bulldog! Having Asian hair it's always difficult to style and color. I had previous balayage and highlights that were too streaky near my roots and Mayumi basically had to do color correction. She did a freehand technique called color painting and my hair turned out amazing! She was very patient, did a great head massage and was super amazing! She made sure to tone my hair to match my skin tone whether it was cooler/warmer. (My case warmer) As a hair model I paid $60 for products and tipped her. From about 10:30 my hair was done at 4pm. It was worth the time!! She asked if hair products were wanted, what to style, and etc. Seriously best salon service and premier talent! If Mayumi is this amazing, of course I will assume Jenny to be as substantial with her being the owner and more experience coloring. read more

I am a bad client that does little upkeep; I always wait too long between cuts, and my hair is usually a wreck...yet their expertise brings my locks back to life each and every time. I have come here on multiple occasions specifically for the talented Clarissa. I have gotten balayage highlights and gotten color correction done and all I can say is Clarissa is a magician. She's quick, makes the entire process enjoyable, and gives honest feedback based on what color/style I want (I personally love stylist's input because I've been prone to do drastic cut and/or color). I've been going to Jenny at the Paint Box for hair color for about 7 years now. She does hair painting in the glorious ombré balayage style. Jenny is one of the best colorists in the city, honestly. I was so excited to try this spot out. I have really long hair and felt that I needed to commit to a place & artist. Luckily, I found a Groupon for The Paintbox and was stoked. I made an appointment for a cut & blowout since I was leaving for vacation the very next day. Fifteen minutes before my appointment I get a call from the stylist saying she'll be running late 15-20 minutes, I let her know that it was okay & in that case I'll be there around that time. As I walked in, 15 minutes later than I was supposed to, I was immediately met with a bad attitude. The artist was still with her client & I said "am I late?" and she replied yes ... she wasn't even finished with her client. Whatever. She began to state that she was concerned with the length of my hair & didn't think she could do what I needed but I would still have to redeem my Groupon for both services although she can only do one. Makes sense .. right? I asked her to just give me a blowout because that's what I really wanted. I was playing nice because it was already an awkward situation. Throughout the entire session she was basically complaining about how long my hair is and more. I was so uncomfortable and could not wait to get out of her chair. I get it, I was your last client but I was also a new client & was fully ready to invest in this space. Nope. I don't know if she was having a bad day, if this is what she's like because it was a $30 blowout Groupon, COVID, or what. If you're running late, you can't blame your client for showing up when you're barely complete with your last appointment. Then to complain about their hair and what you can't do with the 2 hours they booked. All I wanted was a blowout with waves and she was not trying at all. I left the salon and my hair felt sticky and dry. I've had my hair done by a few people but no one has ever treated me that way. My hair may be longer than the norm, but every previous person that's ever touched my hair has treated it so well & achieved the exact style I wanted. This was such an awful experience, I tipped her $20 for the worst service ever and left. TL;DR - treat all of your clients whether they're new or not with the utmost respect. read more

Called to go there for correction and they were not so happy about it. They squeezed me in to have a toner done without drying. Although I have recently started coloring my hair, I have been to a few popular salons and really disliked the stuffy ambiance and lack of personal touch.. which can make sitting in a chair for hours brutal. Mayumi has cut my hair 2x now and each time she has listened and kept me apprised almost every step of the way to ensure I was not uncomfortable with the direction she was going in. I get my hair cut maybe once a year.. so this was important to me. I got bangs earlier today (big change) and I couldn't be happier .. I almost want to keep this place a secret because it is already tough to get an appointment, but it really is such an awesome place with friendly staff that do amazing hair.
