I saw Monica. She was friendly, not too chatty, gave a good head rub during the shampoo, and I liked the way my hair looked even after I washed it myself. The price was a reasonable $65. The cut was flattering. The only thing that bothers me about the place is the big windows facing the sidewalk. There was a little girl who was watching my hair cut, fascinated. Being watched while wearing a cape and having wet hair sticking down stick straight in front of my face makes me a tad uneasy, even if it's only a six year old. At any rate. Have no idea why nobody answered the phone for those folks who mentioned having problems trying to book an appt. My husband and I had no problem whatsoever. We had decided to give Robert a try this last week and we can definitely say nothing but good things -- and we are fussy people! We got excellent haircuts (and we each have challenging hair) plus, my color is exactly what I've been asking my last colorist to do for the last couple of years, and it never happened. Robert nailed my cut AND color without me saying one word! Robert and Dawn are a real team -- they complement each other beautifully. We are so pleased to have discovered this shop. Anyhow, I didn't end up going back to Jet Set Salon - a week after I'd gotten my hair cut it started growing in REALLY badly, which bummed me out - I was leaving on vacation and ended up having to go to another salon the day before I left to have it fixed. Jet Set is a very special place with a warm, welcoming vibe, beautifully furnished, and most importantly, I suppose, Robert gave me a great hair cut. Friends who live in Park Slope have a myriad of closer options but have sought him out for years. Admiring their cuts, and having a tough time reaching my regular salon, I made the trip to Columbia Street. He took the time to look at my hair, talk it over, and identify its unique properties known mostly to me (an odd little wave in the back, a latent propensity for waves that ideally, with the right cut, frame my face and bring some movement to my hair). He did a wonderful job bringing out the movement and waves that are there, hit the length perfectly (long enough not to "poof out" but trimming away a good three inches of extraneous length). I meant to write a review a long time ago, but it's taken me this long to join Yelp. So, to be fair, this review is at least a year and a half overdue. At the time, I was living in Red Hook and didn't want to travel far for a haircut, so I figured I'd give Jet Set Salon a try. Unfortunately, I traded in quality for convenience and walked away with the worst cut of my life (not an overstatement). I asked not to go too short and ended up with an unflattering bowl cut that made me look like a little boy. In the end I wish I had trekked back to Greenpoint/Williamsburg for a cut at Mousey Brown's. read more

The color was perfect and the cut was one of the best I have ever had. It has been three weeks since my last appointment and my hair still looks fab. I liked the couple of cuts I received in the past but it's so damn hard to get an appointment there. They never answer the phone and they never call you back when you leave a message. They need to get it together over there. I'm off to my old stylist, which is a hike for me, but I have no choice. I was hoping this could be a good neighborhood spot for me. Jet Set is fantastic. Robert and Dawn, the owners, are utterly charming. I've been going here with my wife and daughter for about a year and an half. It is worth the drive from Staten Island. Dawn is a first-rate hostess, and Robert is very good at listening to what you want, (bringing photos and magazine clippings is a good idea), and then either giving it to you, or explaining how your hair can't do what the pretty celeb's hair is doing, but helping you achieve a similar look or feeling that you'll be able to reproduce on your owe at home. With only one person cutting hair it can be hard to get an appointment, but a busy/popular hair stylist is what you want, right? As far as I know Robert does not take walk-ins due to his booked schedule, but if you just need a quick bang trim or something like that they try to be accommodating. I have to laugh at the 1 and 2 star reviews. Those people obviously never took the time to get to know the people running the salon. Looking at some of their other Yelp reviews they also seem to like complaining about the silliest shit no matter where they go. read more

Meh. perfectly describes my experience from beginning to end. i've spent less money and been more impressed. i tried this place on a whim because I was walking by and had been thinking I needed a cut and should have listened to my gut when I was thinking I should turn around and walk back out. nothing disasterous, but nothing great either. and i think a haircut should be great. They understand my curly hair, they understand coloring, they understand styling, they have great products, and I like their down-to-earth style with pizzazz! They are not cheap, but they are also not expensive by New York salon standards. They are worth it! In fact, I took a leave of absence and tried other salons, but I came back appreciative of not only the consistent quality, but also the atmosphere -- the music, the clientele, and the conversation. Professional, welcoming, and the best cut I've had in a long time. I have curly hair, and have been checking out different salons since I moved to the city 3 years ago. I've even had my hair cut twice at salon in Manhattan that specializes in my type of hair and spent $125 a shot. I have to say that my experience yesterday at Jet Set will probably end my search. The bottom line is that I got a great cut- exactly what I wanted but Monica had a point of view. She had great ideas and talked me through the cut so that I was able to add my own. Besides that, I was made to feel extremely welcome even though I just walked in off of the street at 7:00 in the evening. I was greeted by the owner who has a friendly, calm demeanor. He took my coat and offered me a drink while I waited for my cut.
