The other hairdresser Tina was one of the funniest, genuine, and charming people I've been lucky to meet. I went in for a basic haircut for a women's medium length straight hair. The woman spoke no English and didn't understand me either, she had a coworker try to translate between English and Russian but that woman didn't know much English either and when we were discussing what i wanted, it was hard to describe the style so she could understand--terms like "curtain bangs" did not work. I showed her a photo of what i wanted and thought that would be ok but they still had questions that they could not articulate. Throughout my haircut she spoke to me in Russian when she wanted me to change head position or take my glasses on or off and i just had to assume that's what she was saying based on context. I didn't mind the limited English that much, but it was her methods really took me by surprise. without sending me to get my hair washed or even wetting my hair with a spray bottle, or even combing through my hair, she proceeded to straighten only the bottoms of my hair and use an electric razor to cut across. No sectioning, no cutting with anything else, no combing through to check how the hair fell. Then for the long curtain bangs she used the straightener to slightly curl the ends and then cut them. I was so shocked by all this and didn't know what was going to happen next at each step. I paid $40 and gave a generous tip figuring that she might be new and the extra money would be especially helpful. After I realized it was done (a haircut that took 10 minutes) I paid and asked the front desk if I was supposed to get a hair wash first, to which she replied that it doesn't need to be done in any particular order, it's up to each stylist and their methods. She said it's included in the price of the cut and therefore I could get one now after the cut was done. It also was very hard to talk to the front desk staff and management (there was a man who looked like he was in charge but also had very very limited English) to find out whether they pass in the credit card processing fee percentage to the customer, making it essentially slightly cheaper to pay in cash instead. This was the case but they were totally unprepared to communicate it--it took several tries. After this experience I asked several friends with more/wider hair experience than me and they agreed they've never heard or seen if this kind of method before and that it seemed highly unprofessional. Overall, VERY bizarre and would not recommend based on this first experience. I expected a satisfactory experience based on the reviews, but it seems the quality of each stylist can be very different. read more

I am extremely sad to review this place poorly. I got a haircut I loved with Yeni at Prospect Hair a few weeks ago and went back in just now to get my bangs trimmed. I told the stylist I wanted them just above the eyebrow - she cut them so short that half of my forehead is exposed - I cannot wear my bangs to the front anymore until it grows out a bit. If you can get a slot with Yeni - it's worth it, she is amazing. Otherwise, beware - you may be hatless or bangless for a few weeks while the damage is repaired. read more

Arrived as a walk in on 9/26/20 and had my hair done by Yeni. She was very sweet and did my hair just as I wanted. Everyone there is always professional and kind, and I've never left unhappy. They listen to what you want done and check in periodically to ensure they're doing your hair in a way you like. The salon is clean, sanitizer available, with partitions separating the chairs. Decided to get a $45 haircut because my ask wasn't too complicated (long hair, cut a few inches and maintain layers so it all feels less heavy), and wish I'd paid $20 more to go to a place where I wouldn't have a rushed, sloppy experience. I chose this place because half the stylists are Asian and it's close to my house, and when I called to make an appointment I requested an Asian stylist, mentioning some of the names I'd seen in Yelp reviews. I arrived and did not get an Asian stylist. Things the guy did not do, which seem reasonable to expect from a $45 haircut, or any haircut: - Separate the hair into sections and clip it back to work on each section - Dry the hair completely - I didn't request a blowout, but I feel like even Supercuts would bother to dry it all the way - After drying, pull down strands on both sides of the face to check that the length is the same I went back a few hours later to get more layers because it still felt heavy as hell, and he spent 3 minutes just freely grabbing large sections of hair. I still don't like the shape and hate that it wasn't an attentive, relaxing experience. It was a zoo there on a Saturday, packed and hectic, and stylists and customers alike were not wearing masks. I didn't see signage about a policy, and no one asked me for proof of vaccination, which I hope other customers showed before taking their masks off. Would never return. Got my haircut here, looks like a rat ate bits and pieces of it. I got it done by Paul but i don't think he knows how to cut the traditional way. Basically wanted layers on the side gradually but he chopped it off and said he was creating texture but ended up looking very unorganized. My hair looks great now. Jenny cut in in a short bob as I asked, and the highlighting has evened out so it is well blended with the gray. Sidenote: they have changed staff. About half of the people left (who worked on the left side of the salon) to open a new salon, and the people on the right side are still there with a possible new addition (or maybe I just never met her). My stylist is still there, so depending on who you are used to going to you may or may not be happy. I'm happy, so I will continue to go there. read more

If you're like me - pressed for time (I'm a mom of 2 little kids), just want a quick but still stylish haircut without paying for all the fluffy stuff, then this place is for you! I've gotten similar haircuts at boutique salons in cobble hill for over $100 which is just ridiculous. I am used to salons offering to lightly curl my hair/dry my hair at the end so I said sure to the blow dry without knowing that it costs an additional $30. I am recent graduate so the difference between a 45 + tip and 75 + tip haircut feels rather steep. I've had my hair cut once by Frankie and once by Paul, and I got a great haircut both times. In the past, I've always had my hair cut but people who typically cut white people hair, but having two Asian men cut my hair really taught me a lot about it (and that I should continue coming here). Paul told me the thickness of my hair was average, but the reason it fell so flat is because Asian hair tends to be really straight and flat, and that by adding some layers and angling in it could get more volume. Honestly, watching him cut my hair was half the fun--that man makes some graceful arm movements with his scissors, like you're a masterpiece that he's sculpting (it's pretty great). As he said "Sometimes a 5 degree angle makes a difference." Even though he cut off a lot of hair, it totally does look like I have volume. He didn't try to push any products on me until I was asking him about some, and even then he went straight to the point, asking me what I preferred, and offering to let me see the product he was going to use in my hair and what it would look like I really enjoy coming to this place, they're professional, friendly and amazing! read more

Called on a whim on a Saturday morning to see if they could get me in for a full head of highlights, not only did they get me in immediately, but I had 3 people working on me and they did an absolutely beautiful job. Mai spent the most time on my hair, and due to years of getting straightening treatments I can tell when someone is doing a great job--she attended to all the details. I've come here twice. Good for cuts. Also got a good Brazilian blowout here last year. Very, very bad for color/bleaching. It's covid times so I still tipped over 20%, I understand that small businesses are struggling and they do have great prices. But my head is mostly platinum when I asked to not go lighter than my 7.5 level, it has yellow splotches and awful horizontal banding when I asked for some dimension to my very brassy locks and some lowlights and highlights. I now have to save up $ and go somewhere else to get this fixed, or just try to put some lowlights in myself and fix it at home. **the stylist reached out to me and asked me to come in again to fix it and put some lowlights in free of charge. I've added a star for this and greatly appreciate the gesture. My hair is just very fragile now and will need months of Olaplex treatment to help repair it so I think I will wait at least a few wks. It's winter so I just plan to wear a hat every day. I'm still baffled how the other review on here of the blonde haired girl turned out the way it did (beautiful and dimensional!) when mine turned out terrible. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for a couple of months, but I've been so busy! With that said, this is by no means an impulsive, angry email. As a side note, this review is only for one stylist. I had previously had my hair cut by Yeni and she was phenomenal, 5 stars! Anyway, I went in for a simple trim (that's it, people!) I told Lisa (the person to whom this review pertains) that I wanted one inch off and that I didn't want the edges to be blunt. She was like "okay absolutely!" Fast forward 20 minutes and she's still cutting this that here there everywhere. By this time my hair is way shorter than I wanted. But then it gets worse lol. She pulled out a hair clipper and cut the tips of my hair blunt! LITERALLY the opposite of what I said. So yea it was pretty bad, but I thought it could be saved by having her style it. So, I paid an additional idk $30 for styling but omg she straightened my hair pin-frickin-straight. She even straightened my bangs pin straight! (Um, what beauty school ever taught that?) To top off my experience, the entire time that she was cutting my hair, she was assuring me that it was okay and that it was "still cute." It was madness lol; like she was assuring herself that she was doing a good job. I kid you not, dear readers, I left that establishment looking like Edna from The Incredibles. I was nervous going to a new salon after I just moved here from CA and leaving my stylist who knew my hair but she'd clearly worked with fantasy colors before. Plus, she was very thoughtful about my comfort - she gave me little plastic caps for my ears to protect them from dye and a little plastic visor for my eyes so the chemical smell wouldn't bother me. Her team of Paul and Ben were also nice. Only bad part of the experience was there was one staff person wearing his mask around his chin. He seemed to be the owner/manager since they asked him about the price for my color. Sarah does my blond highlights and color and I have gotten many compliments of it from people including other professional hair colorists. Sarah pretty much gives the best shampoo in all of NYC (and believe me, as wash and blow enthusiast, I have some authority here!). The sort of melt in your chair head massage. Paul is the guy in charge and he does a great haircut and blow-dry. He is hilarious, nice, friendly and always in a good mood. This place will always accommodate you, are great with children, will basically try to do whatever you ask them to do. All for an extremely reasonable price. Had my hair cut yesterday by Yeni. I'm so happy I came here. Made an appointment via a Google Assistant the night before and got the spot I wanted. They also take walk-ins. I was so happy with how Yeni talked with me through my cut - asking questions, making sure I was happy with length and style, etc. My hair hadn't been cut in over a year because of Covid and Yeni was so understanding and chill.
