What's great about Liz is she gives me her opinion when I ask her for it, she doesn't just make "hmmm" noises and do whatever I said. She also really thinks about what I'm trying to do and will sometimes come back to it later with new ideas. And for the cherry on the sundae: she bought this cool as hell shield thing that keeps you from getting little bits of hair all over your face when she's cutting your bangs. But she gave me one of the best cuts I've ever gotten! I have thick hair and needed a serious tune-up on a long shag with baby bangs and she did an amazing job carefully cutting away to give me much better shape. My bangs are hard to do because the rest of my hair is wavy/curly and I like my bangs straight and she achieved exactly what I wanted. I am obsessed with the staff at Parlor. Sarah Jones has been my hair guru. Anytime I have ever gone anywhere else, I have regretted it! Their stylists are well versed in different haircuts and hair types. What makes this place so top-notch is how well they take care of their customers. For example, when you walk in you will be kindly greeted by someone at the desk, they will let your stylist know you've arrived and you can sit and read some magazines, but I have never waited long enough to choose a mag to look at. Then you will walk into a bathroom and change into a soft black robe, removing any bulky tops. Someone will massage and shampoo you, then the stylist will work their hair magic. So glad I found this Aveda salon. I was in last wk for my first hair appointment since February and the whole process was seamless from start to finish and I couldn't have felt more comfortable in terms of all of the precautions and safety protocols the salon has in place. First off, it's super easy to make appointments and get questions answered as you can call or text them. They provided great transparency on pricing when booking which I greatly appreciated because so many salons are not upfront about what anything will cost unless you ask. The team went above and beyond to make sure all customers and employees felt safe but it all felt very unobtrusive. Finally, my color and cut with Alissa was great. She took time to discuss what I wanted and to consider options. Super happy with my hair and the whole experience! PS: The salon has a gorgeous garden in the back where you can hang out too. Over a decade ago, a friend recommended Parlor's Ave B location and though I have tried out some other salons in NYC - Parlor/Gwenn are the absolute best. I don't trust anyone else to cut or color my hair! Gwenn is an artist and exceptional with her craft! Everyone who works there is super friendly and there isn't an ounce of pretentiousness that you find at many other NYC salons. I also love that they use Aveda products - they smell amazing! I finally made it out to the Brooklyn location earlier this year and was blown away by the gorgeous buildout that's very spacious, as well as how easy it was to get to coming on the subway from Manhattan - it's actually easier/quicker for me to get to then their East Village spot. Lastly, I recently went to get my hair highlighted/cut and felt extremely safe with the many precautions they are taking due to covid. Gwenn/Parlor are incredible! If you haven't been to Parlor, stop reading this review and GO! ASAP! By the end of my visit, I was kicking myself for not coming here sooner. And I will NEVER go anywhere else! As soon as I walked in, I felt incredibly welcomed and comfortable. Everyone is very sweet and friendly. When you walk in, you get a little robe and an extra mask (bonus points because they're super cute and stylish). I had a haircut appointment with Liz, and she was super kind and understanding about my mess of hair. My hair came out EXACTLY how I wanted. Thanks Liz! An honorable mention is Echo (which I'm hopefully spelling right) who shampooed and conditioned my hair! I've never felt so comfortable, it was completely rejuvenating and left me feeling so relaxed. Their products all smell DELICIOUS, and unlike other salons, they actually show you all of the products that were used on your hair. I love this salon! They are so friendly and of course, you get the "Aveda treatment" (ie, calming tea and wellness moments with lovely scented oils and all the best Aveda products). And if you don't know about Aveda yet, you need to look into making the switch because they have a great ethos (they use wind power energy, recycled materials for packaging/bottling, everything is plant-based and cruelty-free, no animal testing). It's a great way to be socially responsible AND still spoil yourself! This location in particular is where I go to get my hair done. Victoria has been very attentive to my hair needs and listens to my goals and helps me get there (for example, I'm trying to grow my hair out, so she cuts it in a way that keeps it healthy AND gives it great shape in the interim) whereas some stylists might bulldoze past what you say you want and then give you what they think is cool. TLDR, you should use Aveda, you should go to this salon, and Victoria is the bomb. read more

Had a terrible hair experience. -I've been to the salon before to make sure they felt comfortable working with me. Stylist told me she was after cutting and styling my hair 6 weeks ago. -She also received multiple photos of my hair. -Repeatedly, she told me this style was "right up her alley" and what she likes to do because it isn't a complicated or traditional style. -The appointment was made 6 weeks ago after the stylist determined both over virtual consultation AND AFTER WORKING WITH ME IN PERSON that she was capable of the service. -After failing to put my hair into a ponytail multiple times the stylist suggested I leave and look elsewhere -The style included no complicated braids, no up-do, no bun, twists no hair pieces or ornaments. This was a half up ponytail. -The stylist repeatedly broke rubber bands in my hair even though I asked her to please use an elastic. I was informed they had no elastics in the salon. -I asked her to please cut the rubber bands out. She cut one, then proceeded to pull the others out, painfully, leaving visible breakage at my ends. -I left paying $220 for a blow out. No styling was ever accomplished. -Not a single option was executed successfully. I informed her that I wasn't picky, and that she could use a mix of the photos I provided. -She also speculated about her celebrity clientele by name, listing out who she suspected used drugs and who didn't tip well. Completely unprofessional! Don't gossip about people. I don't care if they are famous! -I did not ask to end the appointment until the stylist suggested it and informed me after 3 hours that she cannot do a ponytail. -The stylist repeatedly told me she was comfortable and confident doing this look AND she was the one to interrupt the service and go tell me to elsewhere. If you determine that you cannot provide a service, you shouldn't charge a client for more than what you provided. It wasn't simply that I wasn't happy, I was told they couldn't do it after being assured they could. They advertise as being skilled in bridal styling, but won't tell you that they haven't done it in 3 years until you are in the chair with credit card on file. read more

I've been going here for about 5 years and want to say how happy I am with the service and AMAZING cuts. Most recently, Melisa, one of their new talents, gave me an angled shoulder length cut to die for. I went out to the art fairs this week and got a ton of compliments from friends and colleagues. My housemate said it looked "very Portishead"... a highest honor! I could tell she was expert in planning the cut and very thorough, as my hair has a very wavy curl texture that makes it look different depending on how I dry my hair... so being my first cut with her, she asked a lot of questions to strategize so it would look just as good air-drying as it does with a blowout. My first real angled cut, she made sure to explain how long it would end up in the back before starting so I'd know what to expect. I mentioned I wanted an A-line cut with internal/hidden layers but also to achieve some lift at the top so she suggested subtle layering in the back. I hadn't thought of that--but upon seeing it I was thrilled! I can be stubborn in knowing what I'm aiming for, but it's a sign of a great stylist that can make suggestions like "it will work best this way..." Similarly, I have also gone to Victoria many times when she was starting out and she is an absolute wizard, with a fashion-forward knowledge. She introduced me to hidden layers to give my long bob "movement" and I had never seen anything like the way she cuts hair! She was great for coloring during my dark and Charlotte Gainsbourg haircut phase. (I prefer the superior Aveda coloring system because the tones are like paint the stylist can mix in different ratios to achieve something like a custom color--rather than pre-bottled options). Both Parlor salons are very well managed. I appreciate their tiered system of stylists that means they are rigorous with their standards as their ppl move up and gives those of us on a freelancer budget to get haircuts at different price points. Aveda products I've also found are truly effective--like the phomollient which is a glossy lightweight mousse and this leave-in product in the naturally straight line that gradually gives a subtle straightening to your hair! I always get good vibes from this place, a warm and professional salon on many levels. read more

I came in to Parlor with a photo of my desired look, and Liz did a fantastic job! I went in asking for bangs and a bob, and she talked me through how to style at home and what products would be best for my hair. I have a tricky hairline which could have made bangs a disaster, and she was very honest about the fact that it might not turn out well, but I promised her I wouldn't write a nasty review if I didn't like the results. Not all haircuts work on all faces and hair types, and she DID warn me that there was a chance that the bangs might not turn out as I wanted them to, but I decided to bite the bullet and try it. And it turned out great! The best part is I used her advice this morning on how to blow dry and style, and today it looks just like it did when I walked out of the salon yesterday. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the space is clean and well kept, and the pricing is better than some other places I've been to in NYC, where prices for a cut can be astronomical.
