As I've documented over the course of writing several thousand reviews on Yelp, when I decide I need to cut my hair I need that to happen right away. Unlike most things in my life, I find it near impossible to plan ahead for a haircut. The mood struck recently as I was preparing for a work trip to New York. Upon seeing that Salon Kinya was barely two blocks from my hotel, I hoped things would fall into place and allow me to get a haircut after arriving from the airport. In the car from Newark I called and claimed a 16:15 appointment that afternoon with Kaz. Kaz understood what I wanted and gave it to me - more layers, more movement, all whilst preserving length. I left Salon Kinya feeling lighter (and very happy about my hair). Since arriving home to the Bay Area, I am happy to report that I'm liking the cut more by the day. This review is an update from 2012. I have been trusting Kinya with my hair since about 2005. In 2018 I decided to stop coloring my hair and go gray, relying on Salon Kinya for cuts only. A few months ago I gave in to my vanity and asked for lowlights. Once again Kinya's mastery of color blew me away. He matched my underlying dark hair perfectly. Highly recommend! Salon is sleek and modern, and staff are friendly and efficient. I came to get my curtain bangs trimmed, since the person who had last cut my hair didn't cut them as short as I'd wanted. I showed my stylist an image of what I was looking for, and he was able to produce the result that I wanted. I also like that if you just want bangs trimmed, there is an option to get that done for just $20 instead of the full $95. read more

I went here for a hair cut by the owner, Kinya. I told him what I was looking for and I though he knew what he was doing. ( I have long hair and was looking to shape and cut of the dry ends.) He gave me the worst hair cut, and chopped off more like 2 inches even though I said and inch. The shape looks more like a bowl cut. UGH. He is beyond arrogant and insists that he only cut off an inch. Literally if you saw my before and after photos, you would see it was much more. I could have gotten a better cut at a barber shop. This time it was a year before I made it back to Salon Kinya to have Meg cut my hair. Why a year? No, I haven't gone to other salons and returned. I've been going to Meg from when she was at Vijin Salon. Having left NYC over 13 years ago for work, I occasionally tried local stylist only to find myself going back to Meg. She always could tell the last cut was not her doing. After those few stray away sessions, I've resigned myself to trust only Meg. So three to four times a year for the last ten years, I've made sure i get my appts into with Meg when I'm in town. Meg takes the time to know her clients and she clearly enjoys her craft. This was my first time going to a salon to get my hair cut - I usually cut my hair at home and it looks nice enough so I'd always believed it wasn't worth the $95 to get it cut by a professional when it would grow out in 3 months anyway. My preconceived notions were wrong. I decided to try this place out yesterday since it was close by and had good reviews, and was completely blown away. Taro washed my hair with care, then cut it exactly how I'd asked - 1-2 inches off with long layers - then blow dried, then checked his precision on my dry hair, then finally attentively styled it into loose curls. It was the worst hair cut I've ever had from a Japanese salon in NYC!! I had a hair cut with the owner and he totally ruined it!! Very bad layers, choppy, WAYS TOO SHORT!! Nothing is worth the money and experience here and now I have turn off camera on my zoom meeting with work colleagues every day until my hair grows longer. I'll have to suffer this look for at least another 2 more months before I can even go to another better salon to have someone fix it!! I'd give it a zero star if I could!! Went in for a wash, cut and dry with Kirana Soga. AMAZING scalp massage during the wash. Loved my haircut! She took her time and really considered my feeling and #hairgoals. I have medium length hair and hoping to grow it out long. She listened to what I wanted and also offered her suggestions. She was so sweet and very easy to talk to. She is clearly a perfectionist, too. I felt very comfortable in her hands. For the salon itself, very relaxing and luxurious feel. She had magazines waiting for me and offered me some water or tea. Sometimes it is hard to spot where the salon is. It's on the 2nd floor and you have to get buzzed in. They are very quick to respond though! It is right by sunrise mart and Berkeley college. I had my first haircut with Kinya yesterday and I absolutely loved the results - definitely one of the best haircuts i've had. I asked for a trim to make my hair healthier and he did just that - he's precise and a perfectionist and you can tell he knows what he's doing. First, the Salon is very clean and organized. The fact it's owned my Japanese owner you will never expect anything untidy and unorganized. The place is very relaxed and you feel like you are in a luxury hotel lobby lol. I love the ambience of the place overall. Second, I am very pleased of my haircut and color highlights. I've definitely found my new go-to place for hair care. I hope to return in a few months! I called earlier today and got a same day appointment after work. The location is nice, easily accessible by subway and the space is very clean and nice looking. The pictures other people have posted are a pretty good representation of the space. I arrived 20min early and my first impression was very nice - clean spacious layout with calm music. The receptionist took my coat and bag and was very friendly. Meg was able to take me right away even though I was early and we then chatted briefly about what I had in mind before the hair washing. The assistant that washed my hair was very gentle and the whole experience was very relaxing. She paid careful attention to avoid splashing water on my face and there was a scalp massage and shoulder/neck massage too. The actual haircut was superb, not much to say because it was just great! I've neglected my hair for just about year and Meg did wonders to it! She took about 10cm off, but made my hair feel so much lighter. It's nice and silky now and I'm so happy with it! Tips are usually cash and I was lucky I had some with me to leave a good tip for a great experience. We spoke a mix of English and Japanese but everyone seems to speak very good English so no worries if you can't speak Japanese. read more

It was back in April when I got my hair coloring first time with Kinya, and today I went there the second time and got the hair coloring with Kaz. They both are great!! My hair is tricky since I got it bleached back in January, and I did some hair color at home by myself, so you can clearly tell the different colors of my natural hair just grew and the part I did colors... The bleaching damaged my hair, so I was trying to get a color that can make it look healthier and can last long. My friend recommended me Salon Kinya, so I gave it a try. My hair looks really smooth and healthy with the magic by Kinya and Kaz. I couldn't love it more!! The color also lasts really long even though part of my hair was bleached and tends to lose the color pretty soon. Also, the environment here is very clean and cozy. The staff there are all friendly and meticulous about their work. I always got a nice hair wash with some shoulder massage afterwards. I just had a great haircut with Taro! I didn't see any reviews about Taro and was not sure what to expect, but left feeling like my hair was refreshed and healthy. He didn't take more than I wanted off of the length (which can be tricky with some stylists) and he did a great job layering and adding texture. He has an artistic eye and is attentive to detail. tl;dr version: I was very reluctant to write this review because I don't want people crowding up my now new favorite hair place. This place is amazing. Like amazing. Great location, great people, great ambiance, great service. Just great. It saved me from a botched hair color and haircut job and saved me money! Great haircut, color and best wash with massage ever. Long version: Basically the story of mine is that I used to go to another Japanese salon until my favorite hairdresser went on maternity leave. So then I embarked on many many many horrible hairdresser choices. I went to one in Chinatown that started a whole hair fixing mess- they messed up my hair so much i went to two other different places to try to fix my hair and none of them were successful in making me love my hair again. So after one botched haircut and haircolor from chinatown, one bad color balayage from a place in Kips Bay to fix the botched color from Chinatown, and 3 hair glosses (to fix my botched color) and an unsatisfactory haircut from a place in Union square.. I found SALON KINYA. I had my color and cut from Mami, who is a darling. This woman knows her stuff. I told her what color I wanted and what kind of haircut I wanted- and I warned her that I have not been happy with it since the Chinatown dude bleached and butchered my hair. Mami cares about your hair- seriously. She advised me on what cut for the shape (which still followed what I exactly wanted... just better) and she got exactly what color I wanted. She got my hair cut SPOT ON. SPOT.... ON. I am so happy. She cut my bangs just right and she got my color just right! Another thing is that this place give amazing head massages while they wash your hair. Omg. so good. It's baked in the price unlike paying an extra $10 for a head massage elsewhere. This place saved my hair and it is now back to being healthy, soft and bouncy (whereas before it was overworked, brittle and ugly). I am so so so so happy. My best friend has been a client of Kaz for over 10 years and I might venture to say she's one of his most loyal and frequent customers!! She sent me to Kaz last year before he moved to Salon Kinya and I have been thrilled with my color and cut ever since--not to mention that I get numerous compliments on my hair color from people who think it's my natural color!! I have very straight, thick hair and he does an amazing job of making the red color blend with my natural color, so no one can even really notice the roots (except me). Also, his hair cuts are phenomenal and I've always HATED layers, but he convinced me to let him layer just the front part of my hair for some extra "style" and I'm very happy with it because the layers look cool when I wear my hair done, but when I put my hair up, they are long enough not to hang down!! LOVE IT!!! Salon Kinya is extremely clean and pleasant--I love the chilled-out vibe--usually jazz playing in the background--and when I've been there, it's never that crowded, so it's really relaxing. He knows what looks good or not on you. In terms of color, he is also great-makes it look so natural by some special techniques so the color does not look flat but has depth. This place isn't cheap by any means, but here in manhattan it's also not the most expensive, and in my experience the quality has been just as good as those "most expensive" places. I've been bouncing around finding a salon in Midtown for years. After learning former Salon Vijin (my go-to salon for years before they left Rockefeller Center) stylists now work here, I decided to get a cut and highlights done by Kinya. I got the job done in 1.5 hours (Shocker because other places would have me sit for nearly 3 hours for subpar work). Kinya listens to what you ask and makes it happen. The highlights were fabulous - and 2.5 months later, the color still looks amazing. I have an interesting head of hair - half wavy, half straight. I asked for something low maintenance, easy to style, and a cut that would look great as the hair grew out. My cut still looks awesome and with little styling, it looks like I get a blowout almost daily. After years of searching for a hair salon, I've finally found it.
