My hair was getting too long for comfort and I asked to remove 5-6 inches while maintaining long layers and movement. The attention Nozomi gave to my hair was second to none. I was blown away by her technique and how meticulous she was with the cut. She spent extra time shaping my hair and making sure everything was to my liking. I came here for a simple haircut on a Sunday morning, and was very happy with the results. I just got a trim with long layers, but I have so much hair that it took a little while to blow dry. The whole thing took an hour, and I was very happy with the experience. Everyone was nice and masked, and my hair came out just how I wanted it. The haircut was a little pricey at $90 before tip. I'm assuming some of that cost was due to how long my hair took to blow dry, but it did seem kind of high for just a trim. I've been going to salon wave and it's prior incarnation for five years and they are fabulous. The new digs are definitely an upgrade and the place is simply decorated, yet super clean and stylish. My stylist is Yumiko, and she is a hip Japanese chick who is so nice and accommodating. Everyone is Japanese and they are super polite and service oriented. They always offer me tea or water and these folks run on time. I hate having to wait but that's never a problem. I have Asian hair. I wear it long but maintenance of bangs are a chore! Haircuts are super reasonable at $60 ish (can't remember) and I feel like I get the quality of the cut I used to get at warren Tricomi and all the other chi chi joints in town. read more

Nozomi... thank you! After moving here from Florida, I was hesitant to go to just any salon. A friend of mine recommended this salon and their stylists. Upon arrival i was greeted and checked in. Everyone was so kind and they also hung my coat and scarf for me. I was fortunate enough to meet and get styled by Nozomi. She listened to my concerns and what I wanted. She talked to me about every step she was taking and made sure the length and shape of the cut was to my liking. Also, the hair wash was heavenly and she is very gifted with the hairdryer! I am extremely annoyed that the hairdresser did not listen to my instructions of maintaining the thickness and length of my hair. I have experienced hair loss in the past and have naturally fine hair (as she pointed out) so I am always clear that I want to avoid short layers. She decided to take more off the length, add layers and even used thinning scissors without any warning - i had to tell her to stop! My hair now feels extremely thin and the ends are wispy. Thank goodness they were able to fit me in at the last minute today. I leave for Paris in 2 days and won't have another opportunity for a haircut between now and then. There are so many highly rated hair salons on Yelp in the $$ price range. I've tried Hair Kuwayama (good but didn't blow me away), Shampoo Avenue B (very good but I got lucky and had the owner cut my hair), Dlala (good but not memorable), Sub-Image (cheap but horrible). I haven't found a stylist better than the one I had in SF, so I keep looking. I had Kodama cut my hair today, and she took great care of me from start to finish. I had the most relaxing scalp massage, I nearly fell asleep! Kodama understood what I wanted and was great with taking direction. The haircut I received is one of the better cuts I've had in NYC. It's not the holy grail but I will more likely come back here than the other salons. I think if I build a relationship with Kodama, she will be able to give me what I had in SF! My hair is very long and thick, and I always ask for something that's very hard to achieve (lots of volume on top while keeping it long without thinning it out Japanese-mullet-style). I'm also super particular about how it's layered - edgy with texture but not too textured that it looks fried, not blunt and not too soft or pretty). I usually end up with soft pretty layers which isn't what I really want. I know, I'm difficult. Anyhow, Wave 55 is a Japanese salon, so of course everyone there is so sweet! I went in for a hair treatment. Staff wanted me to walk out with hair dripping wet and I had to use my own hair tie. I said I didn't know blow dry is not included and asked if I could dry my hair myself. She spent 3 minutes running the dryer through my hair and left my hair wet when I walked out. This place is absolutely terrible. I went to get a balayage and instead of the salon saying they didn't know how to do it they ruined my hair. Noriko did my hair with uneven highlights that were all different colors and I was told that I should use purple shampoo although I just paid $400. I'm not exactly sure what the 350 I paid for was considering she didn't do anything extra. I wanted a balayage and I got tacky highlights. When she didn't have time to blow dry my hair even though that was part of my appointment I left and realized the highlights were terrible. I went back for her to fix it and she then only bleached one part of my hair that eventually turned orange. I had to get my hair completely re done back to my original color which took hours and a lot of money. The hair stylist here then proceeded to tell me "she tried her best and that's that". She then proceeded to ask me if I did anything to my hair although she's the one who did it. Not once did I hear an apology until I told her that she's blaming me. Do not come here unless you want to waste your entire day off and then have to find a completely new stylist. I'm still waiting for my refund which I was promised. This is place has the worlds worst customer service which made my experience awful. They completely ripped me off and actually laughed in my face. I had purchased a pulsd deal (similar to groupon) for $35 wash/cut/blow, claiming to be an "$89 value"... When I made my appointment, I let them know I would be using the pulsd voucher. I had my haircut, it looked pretty good - it was a basic trim, so there wasn't much you could mess up. When I went to pay with the voucher, they wouldn't accept it since i didn't show it to them upon arrival. They hit me with a $75 charge. They were just rude and went on to say how i needed to show it when I got there. Not once did they say on the phone to present it upon arrival. Why tell them on the phone when you make an appointment, for them to book you with a stylist that doesn't accept it?? I continued to tell them how i didn't know, and if it's truly an $89 value, then this would cover it. They let me know I could use the voucher the next time I come in and I told them I would not be back. They then proceeded to laugh in my face making me feel so uncomfortable and just all continued to make this situation worse. They also clearly have this issue because they showed me an email from Pulsd, highlighting how they have had this issue in the past and telling the salon where to have customers email if this continues to happen. Very much a switch and bait situation. Salon Wave's staff is unprofessional, pretentious, rude, and does not understand the basics of customer service. They weren't even apologetic or understanding about the situation and just decided to make me feel as uncomfortable as ever. Don't go here!!! If you do decide togo here, I would PROCEED WITH CAUTION because I'm sure they will try to screw you over in some capacity. If you ever see any sort of "deal" here through a company, save your money and pick another salon. read more

For those who are worried about COVID precautions, they take your temperature, give you hand sanitizer, sanitize their pens, and have a mask-on policy. First off, this is a 100% honest and non-exaggerated review. My goal is not to vent anger or shame anyone - I am simply trying to save you from the kind of traumatic experience that I had because it still troubles me months later. The service I came in for (October 2018) was a balayage root touch up booked via Salon Apprentice. Understandably we were dealing with a trainee, but licensed, junior stylist. I have used salon apprentice for over a decade in NYC and this experience was by far (times 1000) the worst I have ever had. The stylist was named Sarah. She is a very friendly and a sweet person, but that doesn't change the fact that the professional experience I had with her was abysmal. In advance of the appointment, I sent her pictures of my naturally light brown hair and explained that I had had balayage that had grown out for a long time and that I was looking for a refresh and a root touchup. My hair is naturally straight and was in good condition, so it lifts very easily and has never been problematic for coloring or styling. I was simply looking for something to mask my grays and preferred balayage over foils for ease of maintenance. When I came in, Sarah did an assessment and confidently went to work. She consulted with her supervisor in private - this supervisor did not come by to do an assessment or to provide any advice, she simply proceeded on her own. This was the first red flag. As she began, she started to foil my hair - the technique was not even a full foil because there were layers in between the foils that had color applied to them. Later I realized that this resulted in the bleeding and spotting of bleach between layers. I told her that I didn't want foils and that balayage is not normally done in this way, but her reply (after discussing with her supervisor) was that neither she nor they did the standard balayage technique and that she wouldn't be able to do it. Second red flag. I should have left right there but I was naïve. Then she proceed with the rest of the foiling, but something seemed off in her technique and she wasn't able to get the foils even close to the root. Added to this, she worked very slowly so my hair predictably over processed and became damaged. This lasted for 4 hours and at the end of it I was exhausted and a little dazed from the fumes. The salon itself has very distorted lighting that doesn't allow you to see your hair properly due to all kinds of weird reflections and shadows - plus the way that she "styled" my hair was very deceiving. Her supervisor came over (finally) and quietly pointed out several things to her that she needs to be "careful about" the next time but I couldn't see what she was talking about. Then they smiled and saw me on my way out the salon - also I tipped her generously. When I got home and saw what my hair looked like in the real light, I was so shocked that I cried. The actual pictures are real and unretouched. I called them back immediately and asked for my hair to be fixed because it looked unbelievably bad and I could not walk around looking like that. She said she would speak with her supervisor and that I could come back later that evening. When I came in calmly, the supervisor didn't acknowledge me at all and was not interested in helping in any way. Sarah proceeded to "fix" my hair while none of her supervisors so much as glanced over. After three hours of more over processing passed, she managed to improve the spots and stripes by about 10% but anything more was beyond her skill level. Most importantly the senior stylists and her supervisor didn't care or do ANYTHING to help either her or me. It was unbelievable that they could not only let me walk out like that but that they maintained a complete lack of concern or interest. It was all shocking and very wrong. In the end, I paid another salon's senior stylist $500 for an extensive color correction and the quality of my long hair is now unfortunately severely compromised. Please be aware of my experience here if you are thinking about going to this place. I hope this review helps you avoid the same trauma I endured. read more

FINALLY. I found my hair salon. After years of going to salons that offer the $20 haircut, I thought I'd splurge a little and try Wave 55. I am SO glad I did. I hadn't had a hair cut in a while and my hair was passed my elbows. I made an appointment the day of and came in a few hours later. I only waited a few seconds (every chair was filled) when Maki greeted me and said she'd be doing my hair. She asked me what I was looking for (I never really know, just a trim?) and brought me to the back for a shampoo. I've read the other reviews about how great the shampoos are, but seriously, they're AMAZING. The head massage was out of this world and my hair was so soft and manageable afterward. Then it was time for the actual hair cut. Maki gave me some layers and also some face-framing layers in the front, while still keeping the length. She then blew dry my hair, then did a little clean-up and made sure my hair had the right overall shape and bounce. The blow dry wasn't just the regular blow dry straight - but she actually curled it and STYLED it, unlike the other salons where you have to specifically ask for a style or they'll simply blow dry it. I'll be going to this place for now on. The staff is extremely polite and respectful (they all have great hair too!) A big plus is that they don't push products on to you or make you feel uncomfortable with the cut or process. Loved it! read more

I have visited the salon for almost 10 years? I don't regularly visit because 1) price is NYC average (50-85 cut, high, for me). 2) I don't live in NYC metro area any more. However, every time I visit, someone always save my life. The hair stylist there are real Japanese and very good. They communicate with you as long as you do not have too many personally thought to your style. They will give you a style that fits you. Just finished a great visit with Yuya. I had wanted a digital perm for a while and got down to researching the best place to get one when it was decided that I would be in NYC for a weekend. I decided on Shino, and called to make an appointment. They wanted me to go in for a consultation beforehand but since I'm from out of town, I instead got a couple minutes over the phone with Shino. Both over the phone and in person when I showed up at the salon, Shino was very clear with explaining what a digital perm was and the process (which I appreciated alot, even though I knew most of it through obsessively researching it online) as well as what I could expect from the results, and what I should do for aftercare and styling. Overall it took me over 4 hours for cut, root touchup for color, and digital perm. I don't like those salons where you go and it's the assistants doing 90% of the work, but I did feel bad that Shino had no one to help her especially because I was getting a ton of stuff done. But she was very good and thorough, and I had a pleasant session. It's been almost a month and half now, and I've gotten many compliments on my hair. My perm has not washed out (unlike what I've read in some horror stories) and I actually like it better now than when I first got it because I feel like my hair has settled into natural loose curls. Shino told me it could last me 4 to 8 months..I don't know if that will happen, but I am very pleased with this investment, and I will definitely go back to her in the future when I'm in the city! read more

I have medium length hair and got a haircut & digital perm from Shino. I like the attention to detail and the quality of the service she provided. She did everything from washing the hair to cutting/shaping the hair as well as all the manual labor involved with the digital perm. I really appreciated the end to end service & how gracious she was throughout. Added bonus for awesome hot green tea! I think Shino is great at cutting hair and I think one of her secrets to cutting hair well is that she cuts it dry (before shampoo). She said she likes cutting dry hair and I felt like I got better results with this approach because my hair is deceptively thick & you can't tell when it's wet. Also, I knew exactly what it was going to look like when she kept cutting, layering, and shaping. She knows what she's doing and I trusted her as I watched her. The digital perm came out nice. Maybe I am used to the cheaper prices at Korean salons, but I was charged $325 for everything (includes 10% discount). Shino usually charges $75 for haircut and $270-280 for the digital perm in case you all are wondering. Then there is tip and tax. Considering she gave me exclusive treatment for the four hours it took and she's a more senior stylist (20 years of experience), I say the price is fair. It wasn't an overcharge for NYC. read more
