I went for a lob with minimal layers because I'm prepared for postpartum hair loss (hah) and that's exactly what I got. Would love to return for hair color services. I found this local small hair salon on the UES and was so lucky to have Nachi, the owner, as my hairdresser. She is incredibly talented and attentive--she immediately noticed my dandruff issues and recommended not washing my hair too frequently, which was really helpful advice. She delivered exactly what I asked for and even gave me a quick styling when I mentioned I was curious about how I'd look with a curved style. You can tell she really cares about her clients. This is literally the first time in my life I have left a salon and not gotten one compliment on my hair cut. I have very nice hair and I ALWAYS get compliments when it is freshly blown out, even when I do it myself at home. The person who cut my hair really knew how to use the scissors and take away the bulk, but she didn't listen to me at all! I told her I had been trying to grow my hair out because I want bangs and described that I want to be able to wear my hair straight or naturally wavy. Well, instead of honoring the style I was requesting, she proceeded to give me THE SAME HAIRCUT IVE BEEN TRYING TO GROW OUT! Sure, the cut was done well, but I HATE IT. I had explained to her that I felt that this style was making my face look very heavy and I wanted to open up the cut to reveal my cheekbones, and the style she gave me is like a high end bowl cut with a thick tail in the back, and it completely obscures the entire outline of my face. Literally, the only way I can show my cheekbones now is by pulling my hair back. Why would I even get a haircut to accomplish this? I was pretty upset. It's like I have two different hair cuts - one in the front and one in the back, like an updated mullet or something. At the end she explained that where she comes from a "fringe" is considered bangs "TOO" and told me next time I should show a picture!! If she needs a photo instead of actually consulting with the customer in front of her, she should consider getting a different kind of job. In the end she offered to give me bangs, but it would look completely ridiculous. Literally half my head of very voluminous hair is the "fringe" she mentioned, so how are bangs even possible when I have 65% of my hair cut to my chin with a thick tail in the back? This is going to be a very high maintenance style and I dont know even where to begin with day to day styling. When the front desk person told me "your hair will grow" I almost started crying. Im in my 50's and I dont want to wait for at least year or more to grow out this style just so I can have the kind of cut I asked for to begin with. I dont understand how hair stylists do not discuss with you how a cut will frame your face before chopping into your hair. It seems like the whole point of getting a haircut is to look and feel better about yourself. I left feeling ugly and knowing I will be stuck with an extremely unflattering cut for a year or longer. And the fact that the male manager told me "it will grow" has me infuriated!! Im almost kicking myself for giving her a very nice tip, but she was nice and I was so flustered that I just tipped as I normally would. Does anyone have advice for a stylists who actually listens and talks to you about how to accomplish the look you are going for? I would REALLY appreciate a recommendation. Nachi and Sou did such an incredible job with my blonde hair!! It took a bit of time but I came in on a Monday and had them work their magic on my hair. I have asian hair and they managed to get it to a blonde silvery color that matched exactly what I was looking for. During the time they were working on this - it took quite a few hours so they even gave me a drink + snacks. Monday they seem to be much less busy so would recommend dropping by for a walk in on that day or a weekday as opposed to the weekend. Over the years we've tried so many things together: we started with original ash color, tried amethyst ash when I got tired of ash, went a bit bold with light orange to accompany my move to NYC when I started a new chapter into my marriage, and finally went back to ash as I figured that had always been my favorite. We've been coming here for over a year for our son's haircuts. They are AMAZING. He has had cuts from Sou and Zarah and they have both been fantastic stylists. The cuts are always flattering, hair type appropriate (loose curls) and grow out so well. They're experts. Somehow the hair that used to stick straight up with cuts from other places manage to lie flat on their own - even after winter hats. The attention to detail is WOW. We get about 3 months of growth before we cut it again - which as any parent knows, is great. We could probably stretch it longer, but with curls it's harder. VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I made an appointment and still had to wait for a while before they seated me. There was only 1 other customer. Then my hairstylist checked my hair and asked what I wanted. He was terrible at communicating, but also had no manners. He was chewing gum the whole time and I found the way he spoke to me very disrespectful. He shampooed my hair and splashed water all over my face. No apologies. It made me think he was some dumb trainee, but he turned out to be the owner. Then he proceeded to dye my hair at the shampoo table and left me there for about 40 mins, and it was extremely uncomfortable. Nobody came to check on me. He didn't even comb my hair, so the color was not applied evenly and I ended up going to another salon to get it fixed. (I found another Japanese hair salon only a block away. They were very good!) Overall, very, very disappointed. If you're expecting any of that Japanese omotenashi, you will not find it here. Even for New York standards, it was pretty shitty. read more

Overall, a mediocre haircut. I arrived 30 min early, and the stylist was trying to sell me a deep treatment and products for $60, "since you're here early" and my hair was dry. As a new customer, I don't want products pushed before I get my first haircut. 5:30 rolls around and I get my hair washed by the assistant at 5:36. My stylist Masae comes at 6:06 pm to cut my hair. I had communicated to her what I wanted: 1.5 inches shorter, layers and bangs on the right side. My haircut takes about 15 min. She tells me I need a different hair part, I need shorter hair etc. My permed hair was blow dried into voluminous straight hair, cut straight across instead of a U-shape that typically happens with layered permed hair. My hair was shorter than what I asked for. Wax was applied, on my dry hair that needed the $60 deep treatment, instead of hair serum or oil. My hair was so sticky and the styling didn't suit me. I didn't feel that my stylist actually listened to me and pushed her agenda the entire time, from products to styles. Given all the reviews here, I was disappointed. I've been a customer at T-garden hair salon (another Japanese salon in NYC) for several years, and the gap in skills/service is noticeable. read more
