I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. Finding my way to Seagull's lead stylist Shaun has been hands down the best investment in my personal appearance that I've ever made. He's been giving me consistently amazing color and cuts for about six years now. Colorwise, we've tried a lot of things, evolving from balayage to base tone and "non-highlight-y" highlights, to my addiction of recent years: all-over bleach and tone. Depending on whatever my inspiration was at the time, he's given me a spectrum of warm brown, ash blonde, warm blonde and neutral tones, and has always made each color look flattering on my somewhat olive skin. I've asked him for things like "beige hair," "non-color," and "skin-toned hair" (as well as forays into more traditional gold-blonde) and he always delivers something transformative and wonderful that makes me feel super pretty and powerful. He's good, like astonishingly good, about knowing what will work on me and translating my references into reality. I don't always understand the color-alchemy jargon portion of the visit on the occasions when he's formulating something new for me, but it goes deep, always feels carefully considered and custom-tailored to not just my coloring, but my personal style (whatever that may be at the time) and my maintenance level. He is excellent at listening and communicating, steering a little if necessary and even better at EXECUTING. Since you can throw virtually any music, fashion or pop culture reference at him and he'll run with it, a visit to Shaun feels like this fun and creative extended conversation and like a collaboration, even though of course he's doing all of the work. Re: allover bleaching--I am perennially terrified of looking overdone or part of a trend, or the possibility of my hair breaking off, but none of those things have ever happened in Shaun's chair. In fact my hair is softer than it's ever been because he babies it throughout the bleaching process and uses Olaplex, a miracle potion you can put on after color to smooth down the hair cuticle. I've really been enjoying the latest neutral dark blonde, "just like the ash-blonde swatch in the swatchbook" color he gave me along with the perfectly noncoiffed, perfectly just-shy-of shoulder length layered haircut that still looks good and does what it needs to do with very minimal styling--almost two months of growout later. I cannot say enough good things about Shaun's talent and what a luxury it is to see a stylist who listens, intuits and translates so well. Furthermore he's hilarious and knowledgeable about much beyond hair so if you start riffing together, watch out. He is not cheap, but when my hair is on point after seeing Shaun I feel like I need so much less other beauty junk to feel and look good. Seagull is truly an oasis in NYC and you can feel Shaun's touch in every aspect of the business (he is co-owner) right down to the excellent hiring of the rest of the stylists who are all amazing as well--I've seen Luke and Laura at times over the years for color and/or cuts, Luke made me feel like a polished lady and Laura gives legendary haircuts for curly/ wavy hair, everyone here will make you look good. There's no attitude here, it's professional, chill and welcoming. Thank you Seagull! read more

Oh wow! Damn! is Seagull Haircutters in for a big treat having the most talented colorist in NYC Jeanise Aviles with them. Everyone should strap on their metaphorical seatbelts bc of the magnificient explosion of brilliance and beauty Jeanise creates with color day in and out. Get ready for a truly magical experience. Jeanise has been doing my color for more than 10 years and she never ceases to amaze me with her brilliance and level of skill- that I didn't even know was humanly possible. She gives the best consultations (Just try to take that over, Tabitha from Bravo,) and she gives her expert opinion while still listening to what you are seeking... and she never ceases to get the best color you have ever had done in a fun and beyond impressive manner- whether you want purple and fire engine read or a natural blond with highlights, only a true hair color genius like Jeanise. She cares about her clients and I swear every time I walk out of the salon after she colors my hair, I feel way more attractive, confident, free and better all around. I have never had less than 7 people stop me on my 3 block walk to the train from the salon to ask about my hair and who did such a cool, brilliant, punky, but still cute color. I always proclaim "It's my Jeanise and you can make an appointment at Seagull with her." And at least twice a day, everyday, I am asked by a stranger or 2 or 3 who did my hair and then am complimented. I give the same response always and gush about the amazing genius. We have done everything from my mohawk being black and grey and white to blue with racing stripes. Jeanise has this gorgeous compassionate energy and she really listens to what you are seeking in terms of your hair, and she, like the true "color master" that she is finds a way to make what you want a reality. A testament to her exceptional skill, talent level unlike any other colorist I've experienced and her sincere desire to give you the hair that you want and make you look your best. I believe a testament to her extreme skill set is that every time I leave the salon, I tell Jeanise that "this time around is the best we've ever come up with" and I have been doing this with Jeanise for ten years. Trust me when I say there isn't anyone better than Jeanise and you will be in awe of your hair color and style when she is finished. Hair is her passion and we all get to reaps the benefits of this exceptional talent and true artist. I adore her and look forward to my monthly appointment with her without fail. It tends to be the highlight of the week for sure. Thank you for being a gorgeous person and brilliant artist. xoxox read more

I see Jeanise at Seagull and let me just start off by saying she is my HAIR HERO. I found her about two years ago when another stylist turned my hair into a brassy copper mess. Not only did Jeanise fix the tragedy that was my hair, but she took it to a whole new level. She is so gentle and sweet and you can tell she loves what she does. Her personal style is so funky and cool from her head to her toes. It's like that style that you know you personally couldn't get away with but she ROCKS it. She starts talking and you're like, okay I trust this woman with my hair, which is SO hard to find! She is so understanding and always hears out my vision before she even touches my hair. Then she takes my vision and turns it the hell up! She knows I work a boring office job and finds a beautiful balance between the crazy hair I want and maintaining my appearance in the office. Even better, Jeanise recommends these products that (even though I've died my hair more now than I ever have) make my hair healthier and prettier than what they were before we started. She is a rockstar and I followed her to Seagull because no one else can match up to her expertise. There's a reason she was featured in Nylon magazine (read for yourself http://www.nylon.com/articles/spring-hair-makeovers-2016#page-3) and that her other clients will follow her to the ends of the Earth. Are we borderline obsessed with her? Maybe, but for good reason! And her apprentice Humby, amazing guy. I am so happy he followed her because his blow dries (as he likes to say) give me life! I'm super excited to see what he is going to do because he has the best possible teacher. As far as the rest of Seagull, it's a really beautiful and comfortable space. I am so glad Jeanise moved here. read more

Oh boy, did I luck out! I almost never get my hair professionally styled because I can do a pretty good job myself and save a bundle. But I have been down-in-the-dumps lately for personal reasons and really needed to feel human again. It was either a new hat or a new haircut. Easy decision. Since my place is so small, I do not have room for another hat (or toothpick for that matter), so haircut it will be. On the spur of the moment the other day I called SEAGULL HAIRCUTTERS, which I was slightly familiar with and nearby. I made the big decision to spend a small fortune (I was REALLY out of touch with current costs) and get my hair styled by a pro. I did a bit of due diligence, called them and was told to just come by, I could probably get an appt. Sooo... with my wrinkled picture of a long, shag haircut ripped out of a magazine that I had in a drawer for years, I immediately went to their gorgeous, new location above Sheridan Square... and ended up with KRISTIN. Just dumb luck I guess. KRISTEN was amazing! (I have a feeling they all are...) Very friendly, skilled, meticulous about creating what I was envisioning. She cut slowly and deliberately using a few different techniques while continuing to look at the picture. She was intent on giving me EXACTLY what I wanted. And, boy, did she! I probably got the best haircut of my entire life. I look and feel 100% better than when I walked into their salon. THANK YOU KRISTIN AND THE REST OF THE LOVELY STAFF and best wishes in your wonderful new location. P.S. I think I'm hooked. read more

I've been a regular at Seagull for the past 5-6 years - first, in its original location, and now in the new spot. And the very first time I went, Seagull just "clicked" with me. I was tired of my hair; tired of trying different hairdressers, and tired of having boring chats about the weather with disinterested hair stylists. My stylist is Shaun - with whom I also clicked. He's genuinely interested in people, in making my hair what I want it to be, and interested in women in the way a guy with "Riot Grrl" tattooed on his knuckles would be. (I have had tremendously interesting conversations with Shaun - a super bright guy.) It's a West Village spot that prides itself on its ability to do avant garde hair, but it's also super chilled atmosphere, free of avant garde snobbery. The vibe has always been open and genuine and friendly. (In fact, have you noticed the trend toward "mermaid" hair by elementary school kids - blue / green highlights? While they don't market themselves as a kids place, they are kid-friendly. I have been at Seagull alongside pint-sized clients. If you're out of elementary school, it's the "ombre" highlights technique - and they do it on adults very well, too. ) Anyway, after years of playing the field with hair-dressers, I found my spot- and I'm at Seagull to stay. read more

My experience at Seagull has been GREAT! I get my nails done by Gina who I affectionally call The Nail Boss! I went to a salon a few months ago by my home in LI and asked for a subtle ombre. The colorist must have misheard "subtle ombre" for "white and orange stripes that start at random places throughout my hair and will make me cry." Common mistake, I'm sure. So when I stopped crying a few months later I was determined to find a colorist who had better hearing. I read every Yelp review and looked at pictures from every salon within a 30 mile radius and was very impressed with the work from the stylists at Seagull. I stopped in there to make an appointment so they could see what they were working with. Luke just happened to be free and gave me a quick consult. As soon as he opened his mouth to discuss how he would correct my tiger stripes, birds starting singing and the sun started shining brighter. In my world, anyway. I made an appointment right away and went this week. Wow. I don't even have words. This man's talent is indescribable. I felt like a celebrity when I left. It was absolutely perfect. He also cut my hair, and that looks amazing, too. I'm so happy I endured a few months of hair hell and took time to find Seagull. I have gotten tons of compliments and I am pretty sure everyone is jealous of my hair. And they should be. read more

If you're new to the area and looking for a new salon, look no further, I 110% recommend Seagull Salon! I was looking for a new hair salon after moving closer to NYC and having my hair cut by the same person for almost 15 years I wanted to find a place I could trust. When I called I let them know I was a new client, and also wanted to do something fun with my hair, they let me know I was in amazing hands right away with Chansophalla! Let me tell you, she is FANTASTIC! I decided I wanted to get bangs, so I showed her some pictures and gave her creative freedom to style. She added amazing layers and texture to my hair, giving me a very punk rock chic long bob and middle parted long bangs that framed my face so well. Chan knew my hair better than I did! She was so friendly and so easy to talk to, the appointment flew by so quick! I could not recommend her more if you're looking to do something new with your hair! And I must mention that the rest of the staff is absolutely amazing as well! Walking in you feel immediately welcome, the salon is gorgeous and everyone says hello and greets you with a smile. You feel right at home! I am so happy I found this salon and cannot wait to go back for my next hair cut! read more

Luke is a genius. I went in to Seagull 5 years ago and said do whatever you want- best thing I ever did. I had a shoulder-length brunette/greying curly hair bob. The more he got to know me, the more he nailed everything about me and my hair. I now have long red/auburn luscious locks. I have everyone fooled, they think it's all natural (Rumor is he's the blonde expert, well considering someone asked if I was Irish the other day... I think you can say he knows his reds too). EVERY TIME I leave Seagull I get compliments from strangers as I walk through the west village. Also, Luke's blow-outs are perfection that lasts days with barely any product assistance. I certainly can not even come close, and any other place I've tried it only seem to last one night with too much product in it- so you have to wash it. While I adored the cozy old salon, the new Seagull is a fantastic new space and the entire staff makes it so comfortable to be there. I can't wait to see what new services they add. I'm the type of person that loathes shopping and having someone all up in my business. If I could cut my own hair, I would. But having this chill place to go to actually makes me look forward to my appointment. read more

My life is complete now that Topher is at Seagull. Once I found him a few years back on the recommendation of a friend, I've been a devoted client. I have naturally curly hair, but like to wear it blown out; with Topher I get a cut that looks amazing when worn naturally or styled straight. He's helped me through the awkward bang grow out phase, and from a more angled cut to longer layers. Topher is super in-tuned with his clients - he has a really unique ability to be able to interpret styles for your bone structure and hair type. One of the reasons I'm so thrilled that Topher is at Seagull is that I've been a color client of Shaun's since he relaunched the historic Seagull more than a decade ago. Shaun has taken me across the color spectrum and my hair looks and feels like it's never been processed. Be sure to get an Olaplex treatment! It will change your life!! I often describe Seagull as a downtown Steel Magnolias - everyone there is so warm and lovely. People are talking about art and music and politics and fashion, and the positive vibe is palpable. I look forward to my appointments, especially in thew new space which is STUNNING. read more

I LOVE SEAGULL!!! All of the stylists and colorists are so talented and genuinely lovely human beings. You always feel welcome and included whenever you are there. They are all so incredibly cool, and so awesomely down to earth without an ounce of "mean girl" mentality. I especially love Shaun!! Besides being one of the most hip, stylish people around, he is an AMAZING stylist and colorist! I ALWAYS get compliments on my color and cut. While doing a small role on a TV show, the head of the hair department came over while I was getting blown out. She stopped the woman doing my hair to touch my hair and see how it fell. She immediately asked me who had done my hair. She then told me it was probably the most perfect Sassoon bob she'd ever seen, and that my stylist was extremely talented, because it is a deceptively difficult cut to do well. I will never trust my hair to anyone else. The new space is GORGEOUS!!!!! So light and airy, with the same neighborhood feel the old space had. Goddess Bless Seagull! I've been lucky enough to get my hair coiffed at Seagull since the first month I moved to New York 5 years ago. Laura has handled my cut and largely outlandish color, bleaching me every 2 months while maintaining my very long hair which is nothing short of magic. Plus a few key products like Olaplex. My hair is a constant source of conversation and compliments for me on the streets, at work and socially and I owe the length and chicness of the tones all to Seagull and her. Now at their stunning new location there is even more to love, but still maintains the heart and punk feminist soul of the original. There is no salon full of more talented, lovely human beings than Seagull. If you want great hair and aren't an asshole, go here. PS. UPDATE! For those of you who are colored hair girls like me they now carry OVERTONE conditioner which helps your fantasy colors bright and beautiful! I met Mel by chance, and she told me she could save my used-to-be-blue mud water blonde hair. I was a little skeptical because I typically do my own hair, but I was desperate. On the day of my appointment, she made me very comfortable and was chatty and knowledgeable. I let her decide what to do with my hair, and she chose a beautiful red that complimented my skin tone. She made sure that I knew what I was getting and showed me what the color would come out to over my current color. She also accurately predicted how it would fade out and was sure that I knew what I was getting into. Mel expertly timed the process and pulled it through my hair to create a beautiful fade. Afterwards, she carefully sculpted the cut into refreshed 90s style layers and knew what would compliment my face shape. She then recommended some products that worked for the style and showed me how to use them. Even weeks after she did my hair, it still looks great! I would definitely return and would happily recommend friends go see her. Overall it was a great experience! read more

The new Seagull location is so amazing!! They just moved their super-talented, sweet, welcoming and creative team into a huge space (a few blocks from the old location). As you can see below, I'm on team Sarah, and she's a genius with both cuts & color. I have to say, though, that I always love watching the masterful transformations taking place around me. Here's my review from the previous location, where the same magic used to happen! "I have followed Sarah F. to Seagull because she is absolutely AMAZING with hair - curly (mine), straight (my sister's), short (my husband's), kids (my nephew's first haircut!) - you get the picture. Also, Sarah is an EXPERT colorist. I've had all sorts of highlights, including ombre and wacky colors, but now I have to be more "conservative" for work and she still makes me feel like I have exciting color. I've never seen a client unhappy with her in any way, and she's a great listener, so you won't end up with anything you didn't discuss with her." Congratulations on the new location, Seagull!! read more

Today was the first time I have been to the new location - at first I was skeptical about the move away from the homey little spot on W 10th street with direct street access, but the new space is amazing! Great energy and impeccably decorated, in that very Seagull way :) It's super warm and welcoming - I could have hung out in there all day if they let me. I also have to say that I never imagined myself as someone who would regularly frequent a salon, but a few years ago I got my hair done by Sarah Fenoglio, and I have been going to her ever since. Not only is she a brilliant colorist (I'm in the pastel camp myself), but she is also an amazing person - always positive, fun and great energy. As long as she is doing hair in NYC, I will probably never go to anyone else, and Seagull seems to be a perfectly suited environment. I am extremely particular about the tone and length of my hair, and every time she gets it spot on. If you are thinking about doing something new, I highly recommend going to her! read more

I got my haircut with Topher yesterday and I LOVE IT. I get anxious about getting haircuts - I'm often bad at "small talk," I never really know what I want, and it's always been too long since my last cut. Topher was super friendly, listened to me about my (lack of) hair/beauty routine, and gave me a really great haircut that I love. I usually leave salons feeling just ok with my hair, knowing that it will look totally different in a few days when I wash and do it myself - this time I know it's still going to look awesome when I do it at home and I genuinely love it. In addition to all of this, chatting with Topher was so fun that it felt like no time before I was done. Everyone was welcoming and friendly, from making an appointment on the phone, all the way up to paying. This is the first salon ever that I can say I'll definitely be going back for my next haircut. Thanks, Topher! read more

I've had a stylist for over a decade, but had to stop after moving. I've hopped around to new cutters hoping to find one I could make a connection with. For a while, I just stopped getting it cut, due to it being rather disheartening. I decided to have a fun coloring after seeing someone rock a Phoenix style. I shopped around for an artist who has the vision and the talent to pull it off the way I wanted it. It took a while, but I eventually came across Sarah and I felt she could do it. It took a while to get an appointment, but talent is in high demand. Upon entering, I was immediately offered tea and after a short wait, I met with Sarah. We immediately hit it off. She completely understand both the color scheme and cut I wanted. Everyone at work adores my new style and that's saying a lot considering I work for Chase. My only regret is not finding Sarah sooner. read more

You could say I have a "confusing" head of hair... a stylist friend i knew in Texas once called my hair "the mists of avalon" because it always seems to change form and deceive even some of the craftiest veterans in the hair game. This means I've had LOTS of less-than-perfect haircuts that usually needed frequent touch-ups; it was indeed rare when anyone could understand and wrangle my mysterious locks. So, you can imagine my delight when I walked out of Seagull with not only a great-looking haircut, but a brand new sense of style that hasn't required all the annoying maintenance. Maggie at Seagull really listened to what I envisioned and genuinely understood what I wanted to avoid - she was super easy to talk to and had a great sense of humor about my past experiences. Thanks Maggie and Seagull! I'll definitely be back. read more

I won't go anywhere else! Luke does my cut AND color and he is kind and funny and genuinely concerned about making sure I'm 100% happy with the way I look. I have long hair with layers and he is excellent at doing that, and I love to have the balayage color treatment. People OFTEN compliment my hair - even strangers on the street. It's pricey but when I get it all done, it really does last a long time. I walk away feeling so much better about myself in general; it's a huge self-esteem boost! I can go in for free bang trims (plus tip) any time. It's a calm, relaxed atmosphere; none of that pretentious attitude I've found at other high-end salons. Everyone there is excellent. Very kind, funny, warm people. Everyone who washes your hair gives a fabulous massage, too! A real treat. read more

My natural curls are ruined! I was looking to book with Leona for a silk press before a birthday…read moreget-away based on a referral from a friend who also has natural curls and when they told me Leona was unavailable, they offered another stylist - Shan. I figured she must know how to handle natural curls as well so I agreed to the switch. On the day of the appointment, she was over 30min late for my start time as her first appointment for the day. Luckily I was her only appointment that morning so I didn't have to deal with her juggling multiple delayed starts. She claimed traffic so I gave her the benefit of the doubt that day but if she works there regularly, I would think you would be at most 10min late. Over 30min means you overslept or something more drastic. At the end of the appointment, my hair was silky straight and I was satisfied but after a week of wearing it straight then washing it to go back to curly, ALL of my ends have heat damage. I will now have to cut off half of the length of my hair. I am beyond livid. I have gotten my hair straightened several times a year by multiple people throughout the city over the last 10 yrs and have NEVER had heat damage. I've never had to cut my hair as a result of heat damage like this. What makes it worse is, I went to another salon about 6 weeks earlier for a curly cut to optimize the shape of my wash and go at my length. Now I have to spend another fortune redoing my curly cut. I am so pissed. Yes I was happy with the press but not at this expense. Shan is a very nice person but do NOT go to her for a silk press if you have naturally curly hair. You will regret it. There is another yelp reviewer with a similar experience. I wish I had read it before this appointment.

I saw a "countdown" on Instagram to her vacation that would be around the same time as my service 3 days before my appointment. When I reached out to her inquiring about the appointment I had in place, she said that it was a last minute trip and suggested another stylist in this shop to do my hair (Shan). I've worked on my hair and it's health for nearly 7 years and now need to extensively cut it due to the advisement of this stylist switch. Even with the openness about my hesitations about someone I was unfamiliar with doing my hair, Ashley advised that the stylist she had put into place was up for the job. When I arrived for my service, Shan took forever to service me and even looked overwhelmed at the amount/thickness of hair I had on my head. The assistant was not knowledgable or up to the task for washing or blow drying my hair. I waited hours for the appointment to be completed. While I was satisfied with the service in the end (especially after asking if heat protectant, etc was being used), I did notice that my hair was a lot straighter than usual. I didn't want to think too much of it and went on about my weekend. I washed my hair two days after the service and noticed that my curls were not reverting back. I tried again on Friday in case there was just extra gel in my hair from the style I had worn for the wedding. The last minute stylist swap resulting in the damage of my hair will have lasting effects. Especially with natural clients, it is imperative that the stylist is knowledgeable about natural hair management and in this case, she was not. I have gotten my hair straightened several times across the past seven years and I have NEVER had an issue with my curls reverting back to its natural state. This isn't something I can get back overnight and I will need an extensive cut to try to restore some curls and definition I once had. While those ladies get to continue styling and slaying hair of all textures, I am now left to cut almost half of my hair. Neither one of them even bothered to apologize, which shows the lack on empathy the ladies also have for their clients. One thing I do hope is that they both take this as a learning lesson and never make this mistake again. I'm just so sorry I had to be the example used for this lesson learned. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SALON AT ALL, SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE AND HARD WORK ON YOUR HAIR GOING DOWN THE DRAIN.
