I am extremely disappointed with the results of my recent trip to Whiteroom salon. The haircut I received was uneven, with random layers that do not blend and a significant number of split ends likely caused by the use of a razor. I asked for curtain bangs but ended up with bangs all the way up my forehead. I have had multiple people point out how one side of my hair is much longer than the other.To make matters worse, Alexis arrived 15 minutes late despite the salon being empty. I used to see her at a different salon in the East Village, and when she moved I tracked her down again simply because I have found no one else that can do what she can do. Alexis gave me a life-changing consultation that took my relatively unremarkable hair to a style and cut that fit my face beautifully, and felt just like me. Every time I see Alexis I get hair compliments from friends and even strangers that appreciate her work. However, that just illustrates the beginning of her skill. One of the most impressive aspects of Alexis' haircuts is that they continue to look beautiful, skillful, and intentional after they have grown out even for multiple months. I am a student attending college out of state, so I can only see Alexis over Christmas or during the summer. I got a haircut with Devon. He did a great job! He's really nice and good listener. I wasn't totally sure what I wanted before coming in and he gave me suggestions while still listening to what I wanted/my concerns. The salon is really nice and the vibe is really good. All the staff is really nice. As soon as I walked in, the woman at the front desk offered to take my coat and offered me wine. At the end they didn't push me to buy product which was nice but they have great knowledge and recommendations for the products they sell. read more

My regular stylist wasn't available, so I decided to give them a shot and I was extremely disappointed. The place is clean and beautifully styled and the receptionist is friendly, but that's where the positives end. I went in for a blow out, which i would think would be a fairly standard ask. The stylist was very rough with the shampoo/condition and the brush--at times it felt like she was brushing INTO my scalp and my ears and tugging extremely hard. I told her I needed a long-hold style and within an hour after I had left the salon the curls completely flattened and my hair started frizzing up (and I didn't even go out outside/expose my hair to the humidity!). I paid nearly $100 (between the price, tax, and tip) for a blowout that didn't even last an hour. Pretty upsetting and I will not be returning. read more

I was in a flux for a great up and coming hairdresser - all my hairdressers were amazing in the past - but moved away during the pandemic. After months (4 to be exact) of research and discussing with friends and colleagues one name kept repeating in different circles, Darby, Darby , Darby at the Whiteroom. Living in Manhattan and heading to Williamsburg for a haircut is well worth the time and money. I had to wait 2.5 weeks to get an appt. but I was patient - as I waited 4 months to find him. Once I walked in the establishment the staff was super kind and pleasant. Meeting Darby for the first time is memorable and an artist full of personality. I explained to him what I wanted, through my explanation I watched him listen and I quickly realized he is the master of his profession why not let him tell me what he wants to do, so I placed all my trust in him. I came here a couple weeks ago because I wanted to re touch my blonde, which was completely ruined!! And left orange rather than blonde! especially at the front where I have my bangs. The staff is super friendly and the place is nice but the service I was provided with was horrible. The picture below is what my hair looked like after it was "done". I was unhappy when I saw the results and even told the stylist that the color on my bangs was uneven and I wanted it lighter and she told me that if she fixed it it would look "bazar" as if my hair wasn't bazar looking already. She "fixed" it and my hair literally looked the same. I did not want to make a scene at the salon so I kindly paid and walked away , even though I shouldn't have paid for the awful work. However I did dispute the charge (which was reversed) I had to pay AGAIN elsewhere to get the mess fixed. Which is very upsetting!! Please be aware of who you let touch your hair !!! One of the best salons in Brooklyn. The customer service is great, and you definitely get what you pay for! They use terrific products (the pomade mousse changed my life I ended up purchasing some). Darby always gets my haircut perfect and I just started doing color with Daniella. She did Green and ocean blue on me so far. I don't feel like my hair is fried from bleach - she's very careful. One great thing about white room is that if something doesn't come out just the way you like it, They are happy to book you ASAP and get the perfect look. Like I said great customer service. I got my hair painted by Ray and he did such a great job! While I had gone in thinking I needed a full balayage to help some grown out highlights I had, he honestly ended up sort of doing a color correction in addition. He broke up some chunkier patches that were left from a previous job (different salon), refreshed the blonde allover, and toned it really well to get rid of the brassiness. I wish I had before and after pics because it truly made a world of difference-- he was super precise with what he was doing and really listened to what I wanted, and my hair looked SO much better after! Bonus salon points for A-- a lovely, very luxurious feeling space and B-- the fact that his educator came over and cleaned up the not-so-great haircut I had gotten at a different salon a few days prior. 10/10 recommend Ray and Whiteroom for all your hair needs:) read more

I first came to Whiteroom in March, having never colored my hair, for a double process with Elisabeth and a cut by Tommy, thinking I'll do this once and be done with it. And now I'm here every 7 weeks for a touch up because they are truly phenomenal. After eight years of having a pixie cut and having a hard time finding someone who'll give me a cut I don't go home and tinker with myself, I've finally found Tommy. He's detailed, thorough, and cuts a woman's pixie exactly the way it should be cut. I also love that he cuts in a way that considers grow out, meaning your cut will wear nicely for at least 7-8 weeks. Which is a big deal if you have a pixie. Elisabeth is an incredible colorist. Before my initial double process she met me for a consultation, gave me her thoughts on what was realistic for my hair, I gave her a few references, and the next weekend I walked out of the salon with the perfect tone of blush hair. Elisabeth listens to what you want, walks you through the whole process, and has given me incredible color every single time. I trust her with literally the rest of hair coloring life; she knows what she's doing and is damn good at it. The salon overall is welcoming, clean, trendy, modern and a delightful place to spend an afternoon. Cutting and coloring hair takes time, but Whiteroom has great beverages, great tunes, and a sweet and accommodating staff that make sure you are well taken care of. You can tell Tommy and Elisabeth love and take pride in their salon, and it's that kind of passion that makes me love going there. As long as I live in NYC (and like, maybe after) I'll be coming back to Whiteroom. It's truly the best. read more

Ray Arias is a balayage master. We had a killer convo while he free hand painted my hair (short, a pixie which is new for me and challenging to paint because of the short hair). I took a break from chatting and sipping on sparkling water and red wine he brought me, and we washed out my color. The scalp massage was chills inducing, it was that good. Small details- but they matter- the space itself is relentlessly fresh and luxurious and the bathroom has some of the incredible candles they sell burning. You'll want to buy the candles so bring an extra $30. Unfortunately, I do not have her name (Emily, possibly?? My apologies if not), but Ray's teacher was incredible and made me feel reassured that I ha chosen the correct service for my hair. She came back at the end to cap my experience- a very cool and knowledgeable person. Lastly, apart from the I incredible results, Ray took me through how he was styling my new hair, and how I could do that at home- so thoughtful. Do not go here. They have no idea what they're doing in terms of color. I've been getting my hair highlighted all over the country for over 15 years, and this was the worst experience I've ever had. Maybe I am just used to a more west coast color and hair style, but my experience was certainly not up to par. My hair was over due for color so I came here on a friends suggestion-- huge mistake. Not only did the stylist Elizabeth take nearly 7 HOURS (no other clients, just me) she damaged my hair badly. I know I have to wait months to even touch my hair again. To add insult to injury, she spent a good amount of time bad mouthing my old salon in California after I had told her I was a long time happy client. Her "balayage" was just an all over orange dull color. On top of this, the color was heinous. I try and keep an open mind going between stylists and I realize each one has their own technique, but there is no way what she did to my hair was or should be considered normal & worth over $300. It came out dinghy and orange.. What a nightmare. I went back in to let her try and "fix" her mistake (another 7 hours) and she just damaged it further. She also had the nerve to disagree and tell me that the hair color she had given me was completely ashy.. even as I held up pictures to compare (with tears in my eyes) clearly showing the massive difference in color. Initially I had made sure to meticulously and specifically ask for an ashy blonde with absolutely no bronze and a natural look... basically I wanted her to just continue the look and direction my hair color had maintained for years. The end result--did not look natural, the base color was completely bronze... it was horrifying. I was a long time customer of a California salon for years and was paying $350 for full highlight, and she absolutely ruined my hair for just about the same cost. Most of all I'm shocked that this was the work of the owner of the salon. I'm not sure if this is because stylists over here just don't know "what's up", but if you value your hairs integrity and don't want it to look like shit-- don't come here. Bottom line. read more

I discovered this place after some diligent research (and two huge mistakes in stylists) and boy, am I glad that I did! The space is minimalist, and clean. You're offered wonderful beverages, and the apothecary is filled with the best hair, skin, and fragrance products. Elisabeth did my color, and her husband, Tommy, did my cut and blowout. Although I'm in the beginning stages of attaining just the right shade of blonde, I'm no longer embarrassed to leave my apartment. This review is for all you (fake) blondes out there! I know it can be really scary to trust someone to get your hair to your perfect shade of blonde, but Elisabeth is just hands down amazing. I first came to her about 7 months ago with foil highlights that I hated and wanted to go back to a double process. At the time she very kindly told me that a double process at that stage would just be extremely damaging for my hair, but we came up with a plan to get me there over time. I just had my first double process done with Elisabeth yesterday and I am SO happy. Unlike other double processes I've had in the past, she has somehow made it look extremely natural at the root and is the perfect shade. My hair also has a tendency to be very golden and I prefer my tone to be ashy/cool and Elisabeth completely delivered. I also have had my hair cut twice with LP who is just wonderful. He listens and takes his time to cut, does not get scissor happy, and will tell me what will work for my face shape. I also really liked how him and Elisabeth worked together to achieve the look I wanted. The Whiteroom staff in general is awesome. Taylor, the assistant, gave me the best head massage of my life and recommended some amazing products. Also, the shampoo chairs at Whiteroom are ridiculously comfortable which is just an added bonus. Some reviews here say that the team pushes the products on you - that is just untrue. Yes, they recommended a ton of products for me to help keep up the integrity of my hair but nothing that any other salon wouldn't do. Elisabeth actually gave me a few samples of one hair mask in particular because its on the pricier end but she still wanted me to use it. If anything, that is going to the extra level that most salons don't! I also am a person who will spend the money and time to really take care of my hair, and if you have any kind of dye or chemical treatment to your hair your really should. I really liked coming here. At least the first time was great and they really fixed my hair. I loved the haircut. But this most recent visit, I asked for NO ROOTS and I came out looking the exact same- maybe like a half inch less root when I walked in with 3"- just with a nice blow out. A $214 blowout. They're really nice. But that's kind of it. I like that they use Olaplex, but the colorists have a bit to learn about listening. I'm sorry, but I can't come back here if they're going to charge so much for a service they did not deliver on. Update: I had the kindest response to this review from the owner of Whiteroom offering to redo my service free of charge in order to correct my experience and what a correction was! Christina is a killer hair specialist. I've gone to her many times now and if you throughly discuss your expectations and show her photos she will make your hair better than expected. I have dirty blond hair and I like to baylage it. Each time I go to her she takes the time to go through each section of hair she has done the previous time to ensure that the color she applies is over the same strands as the time before. This is important so that you don't have skunk spots throughout your hair that I have experienced in the past with stylist that are not as meticulous as she is with blond hair. Darby did my hair and he is amazing at creating a healthy and full hair cut - and an enjoyable human being. The prices are very aligned with what you would pay if you were to go to any other note able salon in the city. Other reviewers clearly just like a cheap experience but not a beautiful head of hat.
