I waited 6 weeks to get a colour appointment with camille (and I still waited an hour because they were behind time) I sent 3 examples of very similar hair styles, all natural, balyage, blonde with tips, of her previous work, all cool tones, not warm. I wanted a touch up and to be brightened up around the front and scattered through the back. Upon arrival I stressed this again, very simple, not asking for much. My hair which had only regrowth as it has been natural for a year and a half now. I then waited while she began to 'paint' my hair from root to tip. This progressed over a full head. When the colour was removed I was a bleached ginger colour, the colour hadn't taken and left my own hair brassy with no dimension or tones. I had to insist on three toners put in, I also was laughed at when I requested to go cooler by her colleague. My hair was clearly ginger, not blonde or brown. It wasn't done professionally and definitely did not reflect her previous work. I had to get a toner on my roots as she had brought them too high up. During all this it was the results deflected on me, and my previous hairdresser, even though I had a good 3 inches of growth. After 6 and a half hours I eventually left exhausted and overwhelmed with terrible, ginger, bleached out hair. I will definitely not be returning, and I'll be suggesting friends do not bring their business here, and I'm more than happy to be an example so the same thing doesn't happen them. Judging by previous yelp reviews this is not the first time this has happened, I wish I saw them first. I'll be getting a second opinion from a professional Solon, and I'm sure I'll be spending money on fixing the damage done. read more

When I was disappointed working with one stylist, I switched to another. I was even more disappointed with the other; she took 1 hour and 45 minutes and still didn't finish the cut for my short hair. At the beginning, I had shared with her pictures of what I wanted and what I didn't want. I asked for another person to finish the cut the next day and expressed my frustration at the time it took and it not being what I had asked for. They said I had to go back to the same one, who gave me such a bad cut (it looked like all the pictures of cuts I shared that I said I didn't want) that I had to go somewhere else to fix it. Less than half a week before the appointment, She finally responds to me to tell me that they couldn't use me... Then why book me in the first place? So this is my first Yelp review ever at any location. I am a huge foodie and sort of a snob when it comes to service in all realms of customer service and hospitality, but The Paint Box was definitely a win. I think this is the first haircut in my adult years where I walked out with EXACTLY what I wanted. You know when you show a picture and request that same style and cut? Well, Mayumi did just that. I also used a GroupOn. I believe I am right in saying that beauty salons with GroupOn tend to hit below the belt when it comes to levels of expectation. Well I definitely cannot say that on behalf of The Paint Box. My expectations were met to the highest level and I could NOT have been happier. To start I was greeted warmly by the owner (whose name I forget); then I was offered water tea or coffee, and they hung my coat for me. My appointment was for 6:30 but they took me early and brought me over to get my hair washed at 6:20. This was not your regular hair wash. The temperature was perfect and the deep scalp massage almost put me to sleep. It's as if I was meditating in pure salon hair washing heaven. Then to the cut, Mayumi told me she would cut off about 2 inches and then asked if she could use a razor, which I was more than happy to approve. She worked slow and precise and gave me choppy layers exactly how I requested. Then the cherry on top of this hair appointment, when I was expecting an general blowout (ya know, since I was paying half the price with a Group On) Mayumi styled my hair to perfection giving me beautiful, wavy and natural looking curls. Once I can afford to pay full price for a Haircut here, I will no doubt be coming back! read more

I have been getting my haircut here with Camille for the past couple of years, and she is such a miracle worker!! She is so talented, and works her magic every time even though I have such thin and flat hair, she makes it look like I have so much body. I am telling you, a miracle worker. She did balayage on me and it looked AMAZING, and she also does gloss on my hair. She now does the hair of a few of my close friends too. Jenny is AMAZING. I went to her on the recommendation of a friend who has been raving about her for some time. I went for a single process and partial highlight. Jenny took a look at my hair, listened to what I was looking for (some grey coverage, natural looking brown shades with shine and dimension AND something relatively low maintenance) and then told me her vision. She had a clear command of the chemistry and color theory and came up with a game plan that I loved. I had my hair colored by Jenny yesterday and I couldn't be more in love with my new color! I went from platinum blonde to a more beachy natural blonde and it looks AMAZING. The whole Paint Box experience was wonderful. Every girl that worked in the salon was genuinely nice. Typically when stylists are really great at what they do they tend to get full of themselves...not the case here. Jenny is probably one of the best colorists around and not once did I ever get a hint of attitude. The whole ambience of the salon was so comfortable, it felt like everyone there was friends hanging out doing hair. I went to see Mayumi for a hair cut. My hair is fine, very wavy, and always frizzy. She cut my hair in a way that looks amazing both when naturally dried, as well as blown out. She made my life much easier. In the past, whenever a stylist suggested layers I was always extremely hesitant (after having a mullet-like experience that scarred me). I think the staff is talented in the sense that you will not be left with a patchy highlight job, they will look gradient and seamless (at least for me anyway). If you have curly hair or wear your hair naturally curly, they just are not that educated into handling or styling it. I think the salon could benefit from more textured hair education - I think that would be awesome! They weren't gentle on my hair after the bleaching process and detangled it from the top to bottom - you need to detangle curly hair from the bottom up. During the detangling process, I heard a lot of my hair break - it was very vulnerable after the bleach and it being wet on top of that. I just knew I was going to leave with a lot of breakage. My haircut was pretty good and I am very happy with the shape. The only issue with the cut was that they texturized it and that causes frizz, which is something I need to grow out now, but luckily my hair grows fast. They tried to convince me to cut the length because the ends were dry but I declined because when my ends feel dry, they just need to be moisturized. I know my hair very well. I also got a 4 inch cut two months prior and I never use heat on my hair, so there was definitely no need to cut the length. Then, the stylist asked me what my hair routine was and I told her "cream and gel and then I diffuse it and then I scrunch out the crunch from the gel to get defined curls". She said "GEL!?? I'm not going to use gel." I immediately knew I was going to leave looking pretty bad. She put a tiny dollop of cream on my hair, diffused it on high (which creates frizz - I usually diffuse on low, let the product set, then diffuse it on high to speed up the process) and they kept touching my hair while diffusing it, which again creates more frizz. I left VERY POOFY and FRIZZY with a lot of breakage from the detangling session, which I totally expected. It's just hair and I can just go home and fix it, but then the services shouldn't be worth $400. It was a little embarrassing. I needed more cream and definitely a lot of gel. Color-wise, I couldn't tell how my hair looked because the difference between a bleached fuzz ball and defined curls will make the color look drastically different. I was left brassy, but I was able to fix that at home with a toner and am feeling content with the result. They also were gossiping/saying negative things about a client because they were late. I just found that a little unprofessional and wasn't something I think should be discussed on the floor. All the trouble really wasn't worth the $400 because I do have to grow out a lot of the damage they caused and I left without a nice finished product. read more

I had an amazing experience with Mayumi. Sadly, I am not living in Brooklyn any more and missing her coloring. Whenever I go back to Brooklyn, I see her. I remember that many hair stylists just said, "It is impossible to make your hair to that color." and even didn't try. But Mayumi changed my dark Asian hair to lighter color with pink tinted that I wanted. Jenny and her whole team are not only incredible talented at what they do, but create a warm, friendly, and welcoming environment. My hair was damaged and broken and she turned it around and gave me advice on how to still dye my hair without leaving it a complete mess. I got my haircut here a couple months ago by Mayumi. She was absolutely fantastic. She's super cute and friendly and really knows what she's doing. I had an asymmetric bob and I went in wanting to get it evened out and have layers put in because I felt my hair had gotten too flat and boring. Mayumi cut it exactly how I wanted with very little direction from me and styled it perfectly. Also, they offered me water/tea which came in a super cute little mason jar. It's little touches like this that make this place extra great. I remember going to a salon in LES where the haircut was over $250 and they served me hot tea in a paper cup which I remember thinking was the dumbest thing ever. You can tell The Paint Box put in a lot of time and effort when thinking about how to design and decorate their salon. It's very trendy but still inviting and cozy. Jenny is a true artist. I am not exaggerating when I say that every day of my life since she started doing my color, people compliment me on my hair. Red is the most difficult color to make look natural, but she nails it every time. The painting technique she uses brings such dimension to the color, that everyone thinks it's natural. I wish! Went in yesterday for a hair cut with Mayumi & I am so so pleased! I have really fine hair and I've had a difficult time getting a hair cut that makes my fine hair look full and not-boring. Mayumi looked at the pictures I showed her & what I described and gave me the perfect cut! I am so happy I finally got to visit The Paint Box for a service. I've been following their instagram and stylists for awhile now and saw Kaitlin had a last minute opening. I immediately booked for a full balayage and am so, so happy with that decision. Kaitlin is not only an incredible stylist, she is so down to earth and sweet that my appointment went by super quickly because we had such a lovely conversation throughout the appointment. She works meticulously and with such precision that for the first time in a long, long time I wasn't nervous sitting in the chair. My hair turned out way better than I honestly could have imagined. I will absolutely be back to have my color touched up by Kaitlin and I look forward to exploring haircuts as well.
