I struggled with binocular vision and strabismus since childhood and did not know it was treatable. After spending 2.5 years working with Theresa at OCVT, I have finally graduated the program with corrected vision! I am so grateful to Theresa for her diligence, consideration, encouragement, and time spent with me for these past few years. She has completely changed my life. It has been years since my college attending son went to see Dr. Larsen. Since before kindergarten we had sought out services to help him be successful in a school setting. Speech therapy helped encouraged him to answer for himself and catch up on his early speech delay. Occupational therapy gave him some tools to use to moderate his energy levels and sensory needs. Behavior therapy also gave him tools to help him cope and relate better with family and friends, but nothing anyone did was helping him catch up in his reading speed or ability to take notes independently. My son has an above average IQ, an ADHD diagnosis, and some sensory integration disorders. He was never placed on the Autism spectrum and although his reading speed was behind and he was not considered dyslexic in the typical way. So, although he could exercise, come up with an organizational system and take medication to help him maintain focus and while he had learned ways to manage or cope with his sensory needs, we were at a loss with how to help him overcome his reading disability. We still took him to a reading therapist and they taught him all about phoneme awareness and dipthongs and latin roots,...but all along he'd no problems whatsoever decoding or comprehending the text. That was not the issue. We were wasting our money and time. His inability to work independently was affecting his self esteem at school. He hated being pulled out and while he wasn't behind in the material at school because he had compensated to learn audibly and through context cues, he still felt burdened and trapped by these limitations. Because he couldn't copy off of the board (that's a focusing issue) very quickly, that inability was mistaken for beligerence or an attention issue. Vision therapy came into our life in what I believe was a miraculous way. I was praying and hunting for a solution for my child, and I came across a New York Times article about optometric vision therapy and how it addresses issues that are sometimes masked as attention issues. I had a close friend who knew my son well and approached me having read the same article and said it made her think of my son. I took that as my second witness that here could be a stone unturned which could help us out. Asking the diagnostician and at school or Weston's reading therapist or the OT did not help on this issue. There is a great deal of ignorance and misunderstanding surrounding optometric vision therapy in the educational community. I hope that there is a confluence of these fields in the future so that more children who need this help may benefit. I am sure there are many out there. The root of my son's problem that was not being addressed - was visual - not having to do with visual acuity, (he didn't need glasses, nor did he have a lazy eye) but Dr. Larsen was able to diagnose his visual processing needs to practice teaming, tracking, and focusing his eyes. It was an invisible problem that no other test had uncovered, but the problem and key reason why he was reading slowly and was dictating 90 percent of his school work and getting pulled out of the general classroom a good portion of every day. Vision therapy didn't give him tools or methods to help him manage his problems with teaming, focusing, and tracking. It cured him. Perhaps that won't happen to everyone, but his reading speed "skyrocketed" in the words of the diagnostician in his follow up IEP. Over the course of a semester of school, he was weaned off of the aids and the the pull outs entirely. He was taken out of special education. He would read and reread the Lord of the Rings Series and then start to create his own fantasy fiction. He went on to Middle School and could focus on other areas of his life. He could believe in himself too. When I would see him break through the red tape as a high school track star with some of his former school counselors and teachers chanting and cheering his name in the stands, I thought to myself, this moment wouldn't have happened without vision therapy - not because he wouldn't have been able to see the finish line, but because he wouldn't have been able to see himself full of so much potentiality. (He was the fastest Freshman in the district.) read more

They are very expensive and repeatedly told me they'd help us file our own insurance but would never call back my insurance company and none of it was reimbursed. They don't give sliding scales or work with you financially. Nice clinicians though! read more

I have a very motivated daughter who, despite all her efforts, was struggling with her assignments and school work in elementary school. A friend suggested I take her to OCVT for a free initial assessment to see if she had an issue with how her eyes team to present the information to her brain. I have never been more grateful for a referral. My daughter began a program with OCVT which included weekly visits as well as home activities. We stuck to the regimen, even though it was challenging for my daughter. The caring and dedicated staff at OCVT worked diligently with my daughter. By the end of the program, her eye-teaming had markedly improved, her slight dyslexia had improved, and most importantly, her confidence and abilities soared! I am grateful to OCVT for helping my daughter reclaim her love of learning and curious nature! With the support of OCVT, she is now a happy, well-adjusted, and SUCCESSFUL middle-schooler (I know, right? A happy middle-school student is kind of an oxymoron, but it's true!)! We go to the Westlake location and it has truly made a difference in our son's life. He has Strabismus (lazy eye) and we did extensive research on remedies. Many medical doctors will tell you that vision therapy doesn't work and surgery is the only method that will correct a lazy eye. We interviewed doctors and had an appt with the best Pediatric Opthamologist in Austin (with a 10 month wait). In the meantime we further researched vision therapy. Turns out that surgery only corrects the direction of the eye, but does not strengthen the vision! The eye is a muscle and can improve with exercise. There is a great TedTalk online given by a woman MD who, after years of surgeries, decided to finally give therapy a try. After months of exercises, she was finally able to achieve 3D vision for the very first time in her life. Vision therapy does work and Dr. Larson is the most qualified optometrist in Texas. (The Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation Association has so far selected only 13 optometrists in the USA to receive their fellowship given for recognition of scientific knowledge and clinical abilities in Nero-Optometric Rehabiliation. Dr. Larson is the only recipient in Texas.) Our therapist is Sarah Pulcini and the personal care and attention that she gives to our son is exemplary. We feel as though she is part of the family and adore her. She will actually read the books that our son is reading to encourage him to read and talk to her about the story. This is her spare time that she is devoting to our son. Who does that? Our son's eye has significantly straightened out (still turns out occasionally but he can snap it back straight when he wants) and is still improving. OCVT caters their exercises to the kid's interests to keep them fun and help motivate. (We actually have Minecraft exercises : ). The exercises not only improve the eye muscles, but they challenge the brain and encourage quick thinking. Another added bonus is that our son is better at sports now because his improved vision also results in better hand-eye coordination. I cannot say enough good things about the progress, the excellent customer service, the personal attention and the professionalism at OCVT. The front office staff is always very encouraging and warm and friendly, and we personally appreciate their kind offers of water, tea or coffee on Saturday mornings. I highly recommend this center due to the awesome progress in my daughter's abilities and the amazing staff that have been such a positive influence on her development! Therapy from this center has been everything we were looking for to help our daughter succeed with reading and comprehension. We have been working with tutors, dyslexia intervention classes and focused 1 on 1 reading support, but until eye therapy we were not making any progress. Really focusing on the problem of vision dysfunction has been the only thing that has helped! If your eye muscles are not working correctly, it is hard to do the basic functions required for reading. My daughter has been a 'student' at OCVT (Optometry Center for Vision Therapy) for several months and has quantifiable, positive results to show for it. The staff is amazingly attentive, respectful, patient and compassionate towards both her & us. They tailored a course specific to her deficiencies and she's now reading at grade level with minimal accommodations. For a kid that was recommended to repeat a school year, this is huge accomplishment. She has a confidence in her abilities that years of tutoring never achieved. Yes, it's an expensive program which is largely out of pocket (yeah insurance companies...), but what price is too much for your child to be able to read & process information? read more

Our daughter was exceling in every area in except one, reading. Testing over and over ruled out dyslexic and Irlens Syndrome, however reading was a struggle. We tried everything we could. Personally working with her, spending thousands of dollars on "learning centers" and tutors. While it helped some we kept experiencing many of the same reading issues. Issues like loss of focus, skipping lines of text, successfully sounding out a word then coming across the same word in the next sentence and having to sound it out all over again, transposing letters and headaches after fifteen minutes of reading. We were at wits end. Then when talking about our situation with a friend they told us their daughter has the same struggles but a place called OCVT in Austin had helped turn her reading around, so we looked them up and scheduled an appointment to see what they could find out. The staff was friendly and amazing (unlike some reviewer when arrive at the Westlake office after a two plus hour drive and I appreciate them offering me having a bottle of water or coke when we walk in the door). They tested our daughter, even ran my wife and I through some of the same test showing us how our eyes were functioning properly and how her eyes were not. In talking with them they were describing many of our daughters struggles and issues before we even told them what we were dealing with. With great hope we started our therapy. That was almost a year ago. At times it was not easy, the weekly assignments take work. You cannot retrain your eyes overnight. However, through the home therapy assignments and weekly online sessions with the Doctors and their therapy assistance we have seen a night and day difference in our daughters reading ability. She actually now reads for fun on her own and is doing sooooooo much better with her school work. I wish we had found OCVT sooner. read more

Our son was diagnosed with Amblyopia - Strabismic & Estropia when he was around 3, we started going to OCVT after investigating various options. He has now been there about 4 years and has recovered almost full use of both eyes after going through their therapy sessions. The difference is amazing! OCVT uses a wide variety of exercises to help the brain "turn on" certain functions that have been suppressed, build eye muscles and strengthen the eye-brain coordination. Our then 13 yr old son was still on a 1st grade reading level when we heard about OCVT. We had tried everything that other doctors and therapists had asked us to try. We went to OCVT and our son did a year of therapy and went from 1st grade, to approx. 5th grade level in 1 year. His self confidence sky rocketed!! We were beyond pleased with OCVT. When we realized my daughter had a vision challenge, she was eleven years old. We started a 10-month program at OCVT and tested her on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) to get a baseline. She scored 46%. She stayed regular with appointments and homework. My daughter and I recieved great motivation from the staff (therapist and Doctors). Our two children suffered concussions in a car accident, which caused serious vision problems. They subsequently fell far behind in school. Recently, our seven year old son completed a program of vision therapy at OCVT. Before beginning vision therapy, we had been very deliberate in helping our son to achieve his highest potential. Separately, our occupational therapist and child development specialist each suggested that we explore vision therapy for our son. At the initial consultation with Dr. Larson, she asked what additional concerns we were having. I described our son's behaviors as well as his struggles at home and school. She shared that she has repeatedly seen similar issues wash away with vision therapy. She explained that children can be very reactive to extra stimuli when they are focusing so hard on the eye/brain communication. It is like they do not have enough "bandwidth" to process it all. It seemed logical, and was consistent with the sensory processing issues we were addressing at occupational therapy. Still, we hesitated to be too optimistic. Once our son began therapy at OCVT, we started to see some rigidity subside, and then increased flexibility, ability to pause before reacting and calm negotiations with his younger brother. Essentially, we started to see glimpses of impulse control and self-regulation. Dr. Larson was absolutely right. Of course, we were also seeing concrete gains on his vision issues as seen through the data from his progress reports, but at home we were seeing his behavior change right before our eyes. Life at home and school was more manageable and becoming less stressful. Our child seemed happier, calmer and more confident. Throughout therapy, we saw improvements in a variety of areas. Our son has always been an above grade reader. Though during vision therapy, he went from reading a few pages and rubbing his eyes to reading entire 50 page chapter books. He no longer asked to alternate pages or chapters with us. He used to reverse words and skip lines when reading, as well as reverse letters and numbers while writing. In addition, he learned to swing independently. For the first time, we saw the carefree joy of childhood on his smiling face as he pumped higher with the wind in his hair. For the first time, he was showing interest in ball games. He now likes to bounce a basketball and is successful passing it back and forth. He recently started playing catch with velcro paddles and a tennis ball. He was not capable of these games previously, and would get frustrated and angry. With the development of depth perception among other skills, he now enjoys them. And personally, I had the first spontaneous "I love you mommy" from my son, who previously only said that at prescribed times, like bedtime or when hugged. The list of achievements is long; these are just a few of the highlights. Gwen and Natsuki consistently and competently motivated, encouraged and guided our son each week. Periodically, we met with Dr. Larson, Dr. O'Brien and Dr. Ottenbreit for progress evaluations. They were always professional, thorough, patient and compassionate. I continue to be amazed by their expertise while validating my insight as my child's expert and parent. The OCVT staff members that we encountered were always kind, warmly welcoming us each week. We never would have believed how life changing this therapy would be for our son, for issues seen and unseen, except that we saw it happen right before our eyes. We are certain that our child would not be achieving his greatest potential without this invaluable experience and the abilities that he developed. I really don't care for this place. It feels like I am walking into a really bad used car dealer every time I go. I think they WAY overcharge for their services- stop offering so many drinks and just lower the cost of the session. My daughters therapist is great and we are really happy with the service that we get (the only reason that we are still going) It just feels like almost everybody that works there has this fake smile and nodding their heads but really doesn't have your best interest at heart. We came to the Bee Caves location after two years of occupational therapy. We were kind of starting to plateau, and were hoping that vision therapy might be the next piece of the puzzle to helping our son. After one year, I am happy to report that we are VERY happy with our son's progress. His reading speed has improved, and his success at sports has improved. As a result, his confidence has increased. The therapists, doctors, and all of the staff that we have dealt with are awesome! It is a bit expensive, as our insurance won't cover it. (We tried several times to file a claim, and for some reason, they don't consider it "necessary".) I know that the doctor's training is very specific, and we have been very happy with how they have helped our son. read more

Dr. Larson is hands down the best doctor that I have ever come in contact with as she is unbelievably knowledgeable, caring and has a fantastic ability to deal with young children. My 4 year old daughter had vision therapy there which helped her tremendously. The staff is always professional and kind. A special place for a special boy When we first took our son to OCVT (at Pecan Park) we were enthusiastically met by all of the staff. They offered us refreshments and treated us like we were the only ones there. We had our initial consultation and heard about the plan that they recommended for our son. My concern was that in addition to vision problems, our son has an epilepsy condition, low muscle tone (where he must use a walker and/or wheelchair quite frequently), and a global developmental delay. Even though he was 11 years old at the beginning of his plan, he is severely delayed and on a much younger level. OCVT seemed like they had the best doctors, best staff and state of the art equipment however my concern is can they help us considering our needs were MUCH more than "just vision problems". We took a leap of faith and am so glad that we did. Our son, worked with Ms. Selena for a full year - coming in every week. Ms. Selena (and all of the office staff) had the most positive outlook and would always greet our son with a smile. Even if he was having a hard day, using his walker/wheelchair, or simply unsteady on his feet, Ms. Selena and everyone at OCVT took such great care of him, making sure he didn't trip on anything, etc. I know that we were not working on tasks that would be typical for an 11 year old, but they altered the assignments to meet our son's needs and goals for HIM - not just what a book says he should be doing. Every week they would ask how our son did and how he tolerated the homework, etc. and they really listened to us. He has now just transitioned to "active maintenance" meaning we go back for a session one time per month. He has shown great achievements during his program. He visual acuity, tracking, teaming, and balance have all increased dramatically. We truly feel like that OCVT is a one-of-a-kind, special place for our special boy. We always felt that they cared about us and our son and want the best for him. I will not lie, it is expensive, but they are definitely worth it. I feel like we have to give him the most tools that we can to be successful, and I would HIGHLY recommend OCVT for ALL children that need vision therapy and services. read more

My son has grown so much after receiving vision therapy. We are grateful for their patience and style in encouraging him to do his best in vision therapy and studies. He started during his 4th grade level of schooling and completed before the start of 6th grade. Not only did my son improved his reading skills by reaching level III reading level of the STAAR 6th grade, he improved his math problem solving skills and passed his STAAR Math. Prior to this he was in the 25%. His eye teaming and coordination also improved his athletic abilities. He continues to swim and can now play baseball. We went for a sports screening and stayed for a full 42-week therapy plan. All of the doctors at OCVT are exceptional and experts in their fields. Our son was diagnosed with several issues but also has dyslexia. We began to see improvement within the first month - no more exhaustion from school, less anger and frustration, and more overall focus on his schoolwork. We were impressed with all of his therapists and their dedication to his eye health and long-term success. At the conclusion of our time at OCVT, we were completely convinced that his therapy was life changing. Our son's struggle with all things academic was a real puzzle to us. Endless sessions of tutoring and dyslexia therapy lead us to a recommendation that he be evaluated at OCVT. It was the BEST thing that ever happened! The comprehensive assessment revealed our son wasn't actually dyslexic but had a host of other issues related to eye muscle strength and coordination of his eye movement. Once we got started on a course of therapy he started to show immediate improvement. OCVT went way above and beyond by configuring an arrangement to help us continue his weekly therapy sessions while we were posted overseas. They made time for all our questions and supported us every step of the way. My son went from scores BELOW the 1st percentile for his age ( that's right, so poor he didn't even fall on the chart) to functioning on grade/ age level with his peers. He went from struggling academically in every class to making A's in Reading, Social Studies and Language and scored in the 98%tile on the STAAR. OCVT was EXACTLY what our son needed to overcome his struggles. Their cheerful motivation kept him working until he achieved his goals. They changed my son's life with academic success and confidence. I would recommend OCVT to anyone who finds they are struggling with reading or vision issues. read more

I have so many great things to say about OCVT. Five stars all the way! He had passed from pre-Kindergarten into Kindergarten, but only because his saint of a teacher knew exactly how to coax the best result from him. He absolutely hated reading and writing exercises, and they took much longer than they should. Orally, he was a whiz, and his vision was fine, as I took him to my regular eye doctor, too. Upon a recommendation from a teacher at my son's school, we went in for a free evaluation that revealed my son would very likely benefit from vision therapy at OCVT. After an in depth, clinical evaluation, Dr. Larson found that my son, who had just turned six years old, was in the lowest percentile in a great many of the indices evaluated (there were a lot!). So we started a therapy program that required one hour in the office each week, and three, thirty minute sessions at home. I won't kid you: it is work for your child and the parent(s), but it is worth every single second! The patient and you, as a parent will get back 100-fold what you put into the therapy. I look back at where my son started and where he is now and continue to be blown away! It took over a year of therapy, but my son is an avid reader, reading and comprehending three to four grades above his school grade level. He even sneak reads now, hiding a flashlight and books under his pillow, or his kindle ...and I couldn't be more pleased! It's not just reading that it helps. His behavior at school got better, because what the teachers were doing started to make more sense as his brain and eyes started working better together. With that came better behavior and a better attention span. His depth perception is better, eye-hand coordination is better, which helps him in sports. There are so many ways this therapy has helped my son. One huge impact I almost forgot to mention is the improvement in his self-esteem that came along with the rest of these benefits. You owe it to your child, or yourself if you are considering it, to get evaluated, at least. The results and benefit are so very worth it. read more

They really try to get you in the door. They don't take insurance but they did help get an authorization for my son's exam. It got approved and we went for his evaluation. They really tried to get me to start scheduling the weekly treatments that would end up costing almost $10,000. I needed to get reimbursed for the $300 evaluation first but of course after that they wouldn't help. My insurance wouldn't reimburse me because the office requested approval and insurance authorized them getting paid for agreeing to provide service. Well it's been 5 months and they won't even try to submit claim to my insurance so they can get paid and I can get reimbursed. They are extremely overpriced. I did some research and found a local optometrist that provided an online vision therapy program for a little over $300 and it only took about 3 months to complete. My son is doing great. He had tracking problems and some depth perception that have all been resolved. He was diagnosed with bilateral amblyopia at this August 2016 appointment. His vision then was 20/30. But what has really helped him is wearing his glasses full time because just two weeks before this appointment he had his full eye exam and got glasses and his vision then was 20/50 and 20/40. Now after his online vision therapy that cost only $320 and full time glasses wear his vision at his last checkup at the end of December was 20/20 and about 20/25. And I'm sure it's still improving. He has another checkup in March. So there are more reasonable ways to go about getting your children proper treatment than having to empty your pocket book at this place. They even told me his vision wouldn't improve with just glasses unless he did their program. well I guess my son is proof that they are wrong. read more

When our son was in 1st grade he suddenly started showing signs of stress in every area at school. He was struggling in both math and reading and this was affecting his relationships with his friends and his own self esteem. We pulled him out of school to homeschool thinking that removing him from the pressures and working at his own pace might help. We sought counsel and tried so many different strategies for the next 2 years. He was so frustrated- he would work so very hard but could not retain math facts and his reading was still slow and laborious. Finally, in the middle of what would have been his 3rd grade year, we went to OCVT for a screening. It was at this screening that Dr. Larson helped us to see that his eyes were not working together. This was something that was not able to be detected during his regular eye exams. We jumped into further testing and with the complete results, we found the reason for his struggles. With his eyes not working together, every time he looked at a math problem or a spelling word, his eyes might start in a different location- nothing was constant. He was definitely frustrated and giving up! The team of drs and therapists there made a treatment plan for him- physical therapy for his eyes with periodic progress evaluations. It was an investment for sure, but I kept thinking- why would I spend money on braces for one child which is more of a cosmetic issue and not spend money to strengthen the eyes of this child- which affects almost every aspect of life? Our year at OCVT was life changing for our son. He looked forward to his weekly meeting with his vision therapist- some of which were virtual and some of which were in office. He is now in 5th grade (back in school) and flourishing. His reading is so much faster and fluid, his comprehension excellent, his math facts are sticking and he has so much more confidence in the classroom! As parents, it is such a gift to have other people teaming with you to invest in your children- strengthening weaknesses and calling out strengths. The team at OCVT is a gifted group of people. We are so thankful for how they have invested in our family- it was a game-changer for us! read more

Our Son was having great difficulty with school and other activities and we suspected and even were directed to different diagnosis. Luckily we received a recommendation to be evaluated at OCVT at Pecan Park. The people there were able to properly diagnose him and provide a range of therapies and techniques to work on his eye muscle and coordination issues. They were so professional, but kind and considerate as well. This was critical as our son benefited tremendously from the exercises, but what young boy wants to go through that kind of work over a prolonged period? Well, a boy who really likes the person helping him. Their professionalism and knowledge is perfectly matched by their 'bedside manner', which was a good part of the battle. We could not always be in Austin and they were so helpful by working with us via skype, where my son could work though real time exercises over the computer. This represented no small effort from them as we were in a very different time zone (9 hours diff). The results were tremendous. As a parent I am so relieved and pleased that they were able to discover why and bring my boy from failing and feeling horrible to excelling and feeling great about himself. I was a little leery about the diagnosis and their plans to work with him at first, but I am absolutely sold on this place, the great people who work there and the field they work in; absolutely sold. If your child (or anyone) is having learning issues or anything that could possibly relate in any way to vision and how the brain works related to vision, I'd recommend you have these fine people just take a look....you might be as amazed as I became.
