What's better than a new Italian restaurant in the downtown Mesa area? How about a new speakeasy bar that you can only get to from that Italian restaurant! Yes, please! The Nightingale is located inside of the newly opened Crust Simply Italian restaurant. The ambiance is good with red velvet, dark lighting, hanging vines and bird cages above. We were fortunate to try both places during the friends and family weekend. It was awesome. I think we actually were the very first customers in the speakeasy. And our lively group of 10 Mesa locals tested their skills that evening. Everything was spot on, which is great for just opening. We had a great time in the bar, and our drinks were delicious! Ethan was our main guy behind the bar -- he was fun, friendly, and made excellent cocktails. I mostly had the dealers choice he crafted and I enjoyed each concoction he made for me. I'll definitely be coming back to try other drinks on the menu.

This place is brand new. The building this place is in was half built when the builders pulled out leaving it (and all the businesses who were set to move in) in limbo for a couple of years. I think people aren't aware that it is now opened. We were the only ones there, but I'm sure that will quickly change. The speakeasies attached to Crust restaurants are super popular, and I'm guessing this one will be too. You have to walk through Crust to get to the speakeasy. Being a speakeasy, it's quite small. It has a fantastic bird theme, and I love the Bird wallpaper at the end of the room. There's some great art with birds wearing top hats, and if you look closely above the bar you'll see little birds among The greenery. Because we were first in that evening, the bartender mixed up a super yummy shot for us--I don't know what it was but it looked like milk and tasted like coconut and heaven!! We got a couple of cocktails. I ordered a mezcal drink but I think was called the Landing Strip. It was lit on fire and was soooo good! I can't remember what the other drink was, but my son enjoyed it. I didn't try it because I don't like bourbon. We ordered off the speakeasy menu. The food comes from Crust. We got the pepperoni pizzeta, the meatballs, and the fried calamari. Everything was absolutely delicious! The pizza was made with ricotta and drizzled with honey. Even though I don't like honey, this was really quite delicious. The meatballs we're served on top of ricotta and were fantastic. The fried calamari was some of the best I've had in a very long time. One of the best things here was our server, who I think may have also been our bartender. She stood and talked to us about this bar, and the others in the Crust family as well. She was very knowledgeable about cocktails and just generally nice person. I know that we will definitely be back here often. Hopefully it doesn't start getting too busy for us!

We sat for over an hour having great food and drinks and Ethan, the bartender and waiter, was fantastic.

But, we were disappointed with the Yelp app. We have used it numerous times to get on the wait list at Vito's. For some reason the app did not offer that option this time so we had to phone the restaurant.

Ultimately I chose the Mesa store because it was the original and I wanted to see Mesa. We started with a basic garlic cheese bread appetizer and it was great. The calamari was tempting but we'll save that for next time. Wife ordered fettuccine alfredo with shrimp and I ordered the usual Chicken Parmesan which came with a side of pasta. It was actually a harder choice than usual because I walked thru the restaurant before I ordered and so many dishes looked good, as did the pizza. But I went with the usual. Let's start with the wife, which truly speaks to the five stars because she frankly doesn't love Italian food. She eats it when I beg. And she loved it. She actually proactively mentioned she wanted to go back. That's like 7 stars right there it's so abnormal. I agree with her. The chicken parm was fantastic. Amazing. To top it off, our server was great and when I mentioned we were new to the area and it was our first trip she was so nice telling us the history of the original and the other stores, and the manager later stopped by to continue that conversation as the server told her we were new. I mentioned that I live closer to the Scottsdale store, and she said it's the same food and I'll like it just as much. I'll have a hard time deciding which shop to return to - it might be worth the drive to the original just for the ambiance, but I'll give the other a try soon because it was just that good! 5 stars. Or 7 if you ask my wife.

Ordered a glass of Chianti for me. Hubs and I shared large Caesar salad and spicy specialty medium pizza. Both were absolutely delicious and 9/10. The drinks are limited if you don't like sweet drinks so I paid full price for a cocktail off the list. The waitress did change it but a customer shouldn't have to tell you the price is incorrect. The service was good. She checked on us frequently. There was nothing special about the restaurant so I wouldn't go here for date night but I did see other couples there for date night. It's a decent family restaurant.

Of course it was always during the day when they weren't open and it was quickly forgotten. Finally the universe brought us nearby while we were on our way to dinner to another restaurant and the lightbulb went off "what about that Italian place near XXXX" and the rest was history. My goodness are we happy we had that epiphany because we just found our new favorite Italian joint. First off the service was fantastic and that was all courtesy of Sal. He is very knowledgeable and just cool about everything he says and does. It's like you're having dinner at his house. He just wants you to have the best experience without any pressure because he knows the food will deliver. I know It's so annoying to ask for recommendations but he didn't seem bothered by it at all. In fact he encouraged it and after taking his recommendation i understand why he was so confident. This place is just so damn good. Starting with the bread, it was fresh, warm and delicious. We had the soup (tomato basil) and summer salad special which were both great. Onto the entrees, the lasagne bolognese and the eggplant parm with ravioli instead of the sautéed spinach as recommended by Sal. Both were so DELICIOUS. The eggplant parm was light and flavorful which the lasagne was dense but packed with so much goodness. It was a lot of food so we had to take most to go, which will be another 2-4 meals for us. We finished with a chocolate peanut butter mousse dessert which was the cheery in top of a great meal. I'm so happy fate brought us here. I can't wait to go back.
