I did not know the difference between a Mexican restaurant and a New Mexican restaurant until I visited New Mexico. I find that I love New Mexican cuisine much more! I love the red and green chili sauces! Blue Adobe Grille represents this cuisine very well. My food was delicious and piping hot. Service is great. The atmosphere is very fun especially around Happy Hour. I started with a bowl of red chili pork Posole. Nice chunks of pork in a spicy red broth. Cabbage on top. It was one of the best Posole's I had. It's worth getting. Then I had the stuffed peppers - Spooning Relleno, a house specialty. Two nice sized peppers stuffed with tenderloin beef, chorizo and cheese. Phenomenal! I could only eat half the dish was so big. Of course the margaritas are king! I had the Blue Sky. It was strong. Both times the workers are friendly and helpful. The inside is clean. I really don't like the food. My friend sent hers back, and what they replaced her food with wasn't any better. We had great service by Andrea. We had three different dishes and we were all very satisfied with our choices. I had the tenderloin tacos. The salsa was quite delicious, I wish the meat was cut in bigger pieces but the dish was very tasty and well presented. The Original Blue Adobe Grill has been a long time family favorite of ours. We stumbled upon them when they were still located in downtown Chandler. We were excited when they opened a location in Gilbert at Lindsey and Williams Field but that location seemed to succumb to the effects COVID had on many of our favorite eateries. I'm not really one to never deviate from a particular favorite at restaurants, I always want to try all the different menu items, but I absolutely cannot stray from the Taos Combo no matter how hard I try. I was successful a few times and got the carne adovada and it is spectacular. The Taos Combo consists of a Honey Smoked Pork Tamale, Tenderloin Relleno & Shrimp Enchilada along with some sides of rice and beans. The entrees are truly the stars, the portions are substantial and there's no skimping on the protein fillings. You can very much taste the pecan wood used to smoke/grill the shrimp in the enchiladas and the pork in the tamale, where the ground beef in the relleno is plentiful and tasty it's lacks that pecan wood flavor but that is to be expected. Chips and delicious fire roasted salsa when seated are standard and it's easy to get carried away before your meal. I went off menu and asked for a Maker's Mark old fashioned and it was unfortunately a "Wisconsin" style but it was still some good whiskey and some fruit. Thankfully it wasn't overly sweet. I have had their margaritas and they are awesome so it's on me for not asking how they make their old fashioned and also for straying from the New Mexico focused cocktails. There's a reason we keep coming back for the better part of two decades. It's by far our favorite New Mexican food in the valley. Always fast and friendly service. We showed up early at around 4pm to beat the dinner rush, but it's not a bad idea to get a reservation. read more

I learned about The Original Blue Adobe Grill when browsing a Phoenix area forum. A poster had put up a link from a PBS show called "Check, please!" that featured this restaurant. After watching the short video in the link, I wanted to try it. Upon entering, our reservation was acknowledged and we were greeted and seated. The staff here is very friendly and knowledgeable regarding the menu. The decor definitely says New Mexico with its Pueblo revival style. We were given freshly made chips along with their signature salsa. It is unique in that it has a smoky flavor as well as some heat. I would have preferred to not have had any heat in it as it almost overtook the nice, smokey flavor. To go along with it, we also got an order of guacamole. Their guac is freshly made and mild. We all enjoyed these starters. The food is New Mexico style which is a fusion of Pueblo Native American cuisine and Hispano Spanish and Mexican culinary traditions. The servers have recommended to those who never had New Mexico style that they start with trying "carne adovada". I was tempted to order this but it seemed to be a bit too spicy for me. Our server was very friendly. She was curious as to how we decided to try this restaurant. I explained how I found it and when she asked, I told her we lived in VA while our grandsons and their Dad were locals. She also let us know that the owner likes to serve large portions of food and we definitely agreed that the portion sizes were large. Here's what we all had---the majority had platters where one could choose their main courses and they all chose chicken enchiladas. One grandson ordered 3 enchiladas (you could choose to have two or three) and was very full. You get a choice of green or red sauce. Rice and beans come with the platters. I ordered a platter with 2 rellenos which were stuffed with cheese and put green sauce on it. The rellenos were different from what is typical. They were stuffed into dough. I liked them. One grandson ordered "Chorizo stuffed chicken" which consists of: "pecan roasted chicken breasts stuffed with green chilies, fontina cheese and chorizo smothered with an amaretto mushroom cream sauce. It was a lot of food but he cleaned his plate and said he would eat this dish again. All in all, no one left hungry when we were done. Popped in for Cinco de Mayo - place was pretty full, but was seated within 5 minutes of arriving. There were people coming in behind us who also didn't have to wait long to be seated. We came here a while back with some friends and and was thoroughly impressed at the time. Food was excellent, great serves - not huge (thankfully) but hearty/good sized. This place has been on our list for a long time now and finally got the chance to go. Upon arrival we were greeted and seated right away as it wasn't very busy. We ordered the cheese crisp with green chiles as appetizer, the spooning rellenos, and the 3 item plate with adobada, beef burrito and chicken enchiladas. Both items came with rice and beans. Service and food were great. The rice isn't my style but that was the only thing that didn't really impressed me. Plenty of seating inside and outside. Dinner with JoAnne and we love coming here because the food & service never disappoints! On this visit, we both had the Stacked Enchiladas special...oh so very good! Only difference was we each got different meat. I had beef in mine and had the rice and beans. She got a salad with hers instead of the rice and beans. We ordered guacamole appetizer beforehand. I ended up taking home the rest of our chips, guac, and salsa and she took home the rest of her salad and enchiladas. We came at a good time, as it wasn't that busy yet and the ambiance was perfect. Our server was super friendly. The food came out pretty quick - the guacamole was delicious as were the chips. Nice and light and crispy! I had the red chili pork posole and it was perfectly spicy with a little cabbage for crunch. I also got the spooning rellenos with shrimp and was so glad - served with rice and beans it was a really great dish too. Came for dinner with a small group of friends. This is our first time here and we were excited to try it! We had made a reservation and were seated upon arrival. The decor is eclectic but tasteful and their special boards are loaded with lots of choices. They have a large menu with lots of variety. Starting with drinks, my wife ordered the Killer Margarita, which she said was good. The chips and salsa were great. The chips were light, a perfect amount of salt and just yummy and crispy. The salsa was good as well, had a slight bite of heat but doable if you are heat sensitive. I ordered the stacked enchiladas with chicken and asked for green chili sauce. It was good, maybe a bit too saucy but I loved the multi layered flavors. The chicken and tortillas were cooked perfectly. The dish came with whole beans and rice...I'm not a big bean person but I did taste it. Blah...but again, I'm not a big bean person! The rice was good, maybe could be a bit softer, but it had a nice flavor. Wife ordered the Carne Adovada, which she ended up not liking. This is a roasted pork dish but you really don't taste the pork...it's more about the sauce they use. The red chili adobo sauce was way to much in our opinions and just took away from the succulent pork that was buried in it. The tortilla was flour, thin, and very tasty. Everyone else reported their dishes were good...and we had to have dessert! We ordered the Monzana Sopapilla, which is two open faced sopapillas loaded with warm apples and vanilla bean ice cream topped with honey and brown sugar. OMGoodness...pure decadence and so yummy! The apples are cooked lightly and still have their crunch. Such a great dish! We will come back and try some other dishes. read more

Let me start of saying - call to make a reservation! Before heading over definitely make a reservation otherwise they may not seem busy but they do take reservations first. Secondly get that green chili lobster dip. It was creamy deliciousness. I was definitely surprised about how good it was. I got the Carne Adavodo which is a pork red chili plate. It was very delicious. The pork was tender and the red Chile sauce was perfectly spicy. We also had the Yesterdays meatloaf. The chorizo in the sauce made the meatloaf delicious. The portions were large. The food was delicious. The ambiance was nice and relaxed. Family atmosphere with a date night vibe. The front checkin area is a little secluded from the rest of the restaurant which makes it cozy but that's also what gets guest forgotten. So be patient to get in - the food is definitely worth it! I had heard about this restaurant from a couple of people and since I was in Mesa, Arizona, I decided to try it. The menu is not what you would expect from a typical/traditional Mexican restaurant. I will attach at the end of my review. I had a Cadillac margarita along with my chicken tacos, which included rice and beans and tortilla chips and salsa were also provided. I am a Cadillac margarita snob, and I was pleasantly pleased when I tasted mine. The perfect amount of everything. Another case in which I could assign half stars, I would rate this restaurant 3.5. I'll start with the good: we came for a birthday dinner and our table was reserved and waiting for us right away, which is always good. The service throughout the meal was excellent, our waitress was very attentive with refilling drinks, bringing more chips/ salsa, and checking in frequently if we needed anything. They offer a complimentary dessert for the birthday, which you can select from the menu. Not many places do this any more and this was greatly appreciated. For the not-so-good: the food wasn't great. My plate was a little overcooked, or maybe was sitting under a warmer for too long, because the enchilada sauce on my chile relleno was dried and the breading was nearing on burned. The enchiladas on my plate were also dry and didn't have enough sauce. My dining companions had similar issues with the food being dry or lacking enough sauce, although my brother enjoyed the adobo dish a lot. My wife couldn't eat her soup, the chowder was sweet in an unappealing way. The Cadillac margaritas we ordered were fine, but nothing to write home about. The rice that came with the dishes was unfortunately not fully cooked in places. For dessert, the crème brûlée was just okay, and the special raspberry cheesecake was excellent. We also noticed that the restaurant is very very loud, and found it difficult to carry a conversation amongst each other. I would probably return, and hope that it was just an off day in the kitchen with the dry/overcooked/undercooked food. read more

We had a party of 8 and our server did a fantastic job - even mixing our carafes of margaritas!, which were very fresh and flavorful. We tried the queso and the lobster dip as appetizers. Both were good, but I would highly recommend the lobster dip. It was loaded with big chunks of lobster, and I liked the dip flavor a bit more than the queso flavor. I had the tenderloin chile rellenos, and they were fantastic! I also liked that they came with rice and charro beans, instead of refried beans. My friends ordered the carne adovada and I had a few tastes. The meat was tender and flavorful, though it had a bit too much sauce for me. The salsa was a dark salsa (almost black), which I had never seen before - but it was really good. Don't let the outside of the building fool you.
