This was our second time eating at Modern Rose. The first time was shortly after they opened and it was very good. This time was extremely disappointing. I tried calling a week ahead to get a reservation, I was told they did not accept reservations on the weekends. We got to the restaurant a little before 11:30am, we were not sat until after 1:30pm. Multiple other groups had been there for an hour or more waiting. We starting seeing groups leaving from inside the restaurant, yet they were extremely slow to sit new groups, and instead gave preference for parties of 2. Overall their method of keeping a waitlist and seating people seems very disorganized. One of the times I went to the host station to check on our place in line after being there for 2 hours, sometime cut in front of me and said they had a reservation for 1pm and produced an email confirming the reservation. The host, who I also assume was the manager, seemed to have no idea about the reservation as it wasn't on their list and he didn't know who guaranteed it. Which color me surprised, because when I called the restaurant, I was told there were no reservations accepted on the weekend. The host told the person they would try to seat then by 1:15 or 1:30. I understand he was trying to make it right, but its also incredibly frustrating that another party showed up with a reservation that shouldn't exist, and was sat in front of our group who had been waiting 2 hours, and there were other similar sized groups who had been waiting with us. The food was good but the host/manager seemed very unprofessional. When he went to seat us the table hadn't been wiped or set, so he made us get up and go back to the foyer to wait while he did it, all at the same time complaining that he has to do everything himself and making other comments about his staff. Once we got inside we saw several open tables that could have accommodated people who were stuck sitting on the porch with us waiting, but they were again slow to seat. Our waiter forgot to bring us cream, honey, and spoons for tea. We had to flag down another waiter. They also brought out a drink that both the waiter and host called something else that wasn't what was ordered before saying "I don't know what this is" and leaving it up to our friend to figure out if it was the drink he ordered or not. The food was good and came out quickly I will give them that but it does not make up for the entire experience. Also, if you put your name and number on their waitlist and then leave to walk around and kill time, you have to be back within 5 minutes of whenever they decide to call you for a table or else you lose your place. Another odd fact, the first bathroom you see, that has a sign that clearly says bathroom, in the foyer and that is immediately outside the dinning rooms, is apparently a "decoration only bathroom" and not for use. Our friend was stopped when he went to use it and told to go to another bathroom on the second floor. Again, the door was open partially and there was a sign that said bathroom and nothing else saying this was not for patrons. We will likely not be back again unless we are able to get a reservation. On another note, be careful if you are waiting on their porch. They usually have seasonal decor on the porch and if it is windy like it was the day we went, their decor is not anchored down and kept falling over. I was almost hit by a fake tree several times. We were also extremely disappointed they seem to have downsized their menu since we were there in August. They have a take out/coffee shop to the right side of their porch which is not clearly marked, we only found it because the host told us to go there while we wait. The coffee shop had a menu there and we assumed it was just their quick take out stuff, no, it is the same menu that you now get in the restaurant. Had we known this, we probably wouldn't have wasted 2 hours waiting and just ordered our meals as take out. read more
