We brought a group of very excited Girl Scouts for our end-of-year trip, and it was such a fun and memorable experience for all of the girls. A huge shoutout to our tour guide, Daven, who was incredibly patient with our energetic group and made the experience even better. He was so knowledgeable and shared tons of fun facts about the capybaras that kept the girls engaged the entire time. You can tell he truly enjoys what he does! I took my kids here and they absolutely loved it. The capybaras absolutely love lettuce. They were a little aggressive over it, sometimes biting each other to get right to it. I guess that's why we sign the waivers! With that said, my kids loved this place. It was nice to hear their giggles and see my 5-year-old son basically get tackled by a caybara trying to get his lettuce. There are other animals in the experience, including a floppy ear bunny, a loud parrot (that bites so don't touch!) and a few other animals. They are great in keeping the kids distracted before the main capybara event. We had a really fun time. read more

My son and I thoroughly enjoyed our visit to this café. We opted for the hour-long experience, which was priced at approximately $100.00. Upon arrival, the check-in process was seamless, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. While waiting for our session, we spent time in a designated area with several charming animals, including rabbits, miniature goats, and ferrets. Once our time slot began, we were guided to the back in two small groups. We spent the first 30 minutes learning about and interacting with the capybaras, followed by a transition to a second room to meet a lemur and a wallaby. Overall, this was an amazing experience. Capybara Cafe is an under the radar attraction you'd never expect to find in St. Augustine, Florida. Capybara's are the world's largest rodents, but also some of the friendliest. Encounters are $50 for 30 minutes or $100 for an hour. Interactions start with guests sitting around in a circle. My boyfriend and I have been wanting to do this for so long. While you wait for your session to start they have other animals, goats, ferrets, bunnies, snake, parrot and I'm sure I missed a few. The staff is very informative and provides a lot of good information. When we got into the room with the capybaras it was chill and the staff member was great and funny. One of the capybaras sat on me almost the whole time and it was so funny. The only complaint is the price and the time slot. It feels a bit expensive so I couldn't do it very much but maybe once in a while. I definitely had a great experience and my boyfriend and I were glad we finally made it here. Saw this place on one of the social apps and booked it when we were planning a trip to see a Jags game. Great experience that you'll probably wish would've lasted a bit longer is what I'll guess you leave feeling like. Our animal handler was good about getting them out and about to socialize while telling us more about them and fielding questions from everyone in the room. You'll also get some veggies to feed them by hand so you can get them close enough to pet. There are 2 rooms - one is larger, both are different from one another. The lobby has some animals and critters to keep you engaged while you wait to see the ginormous rodents. You'll also find some souveniers and bottled drinks. It costs $50 for 30 minutes. We arrived and waited in the "café" area first, where they have guinea pigs and a rabbit you can pet. Then they take guests into small rooms in groups of about 10 people. In our room, we had three five-month-old capybaras. Our host gave us kale, and the capybaras came right up to eat out of our hands. That's also when you can pet them. The capybaras were named after beans, and Pinto was our favorite. Pinto even rolled over for my boyfriend and clearly loved the belly rubs. Later, he jumped up on the bench behind us and just hung out for a few minutes. While we fed and petted them, the host explained how he acquired them and how to care for them. These capybaras belong to a sanctuary and were rescued. It was a glorious 30 minutes, and my boyfriend, who is from the capital of wild capybaras, got to touch his first one. What a neat experience! We signed up for the Capy & Friends Experience, which allots 30 mins to interact with the capybaras and 30 mins with a handful of other little creatures (armadillo, coati mundi, and a few others). The handler was informative and answered every question we threw at him, all while ensuring we were in a safe space with the animals. For $100/person, I expected a smaller group with more interaction with the animals. Still, the experience was a memorable one and we're looking forward to visiting again during a future visit. Don't worry, be Capy! Currently I'm in Jacksonville, Florida for work and a local coworker asked me if I was going to the Capybara Cafe when I mentioned the Alligator Farm. I had no idea this was here and made it a must see while here for four weeks. They were booked for the first weekend, so I booked out the following weekend. Definitely recommend booking ahead or trying to stop on a weekday. Well worth the $50 each way in my opinion, but I adore capybara. Ashley was our amazing handler and so grateful for her friendliness in our encounter. Since I was early, I got to meet and hold their ferret which I adored! What a great way to start! The whole experience was great, though having poop in an enclosed room did set off my asthma/allergies a tad though I know that's the natural of animals like this. Tad bummed they are listed as a cafe but didn't see more coffee options or things you'd see in a cafe. Plan ahead and eat/drink before you arrive. We visited the Capybara Cafe on a Monday while visiting St. Augustine for a weekend. I was looking forward to meeting some capybaras, and potentially having some coffee. This place is super cute, and I love how they operate the place with respect to the reserve. The animals don't live on site, they are transported there daily from a nearby reserve and only the ones who willingly get into their crates to come to work will come to the cafe. We had three 20-week old capys in our room. Our hosts were awesome, we had Alice who was super knowledgeable, and another woman who'd just started who seemed so happy to be there that it made the whole experience better. Our room had a lot of kids who were admittedly hogging the capys a little, but our hosts made sure that we got food to feed them and a photo with them at the end! I'd probably go back to the capybara cafe, but I think I'd be more likely to do the other experience there because I'd love to meet some other animals! They also mentioned an upcoming experience at the reserve where you may be able to swim with otters, and another cafe in st Pete's with bigger capybaras! I'd be excited to try either. I did dock a star because I think calling this place a "cafe" is a little generous. They've got some candy and snacks and a cooler of canned drinks for sale, but I was hoping for some coffee. read more

I cannot recommend this place more! We did the one hour capybara and friends option. We loved it. First, when you walk in there's a waiting area where you get to pet different kinds of domestic animals, such as goats, ferrets, bunnies, guinea pigs, and so forth. Then you are brought into the first room which several cap bars are walking around and you get to feed them and pet them as they walk by. Our guide who is a gentleman, but unfortunately, I don't remember. His name was super informative and funny. After this, you go to the other room which has couches and you get to sit down and and they just walk out and you get to pet them. This is when if you've paid for the friends, this is when the friends come out. Everything was awesome. Definitely worth the money. They have a small gift shop as well. We did the 30 min capybara encounter. 15 minutes before we got to interact in the waiting area with other small animals (goats, rabbits, ferrets, tortoise, hedgehog, etc.). The capybara room had a tropical and Intimate ambiance that felt calm and more natural. There were 7-8 capys in the room when we arrived, they free roam and the host discussed the animals with us while we fed them every few minutes as they interacted freely with us. They had no issues crawling on our lap and hanging out. It was a very cool experience and we learned interested things while we did it. Snacks were available for purchase in the gift area, there was not a kitchen/dining setting if that is what you are looking for. Will definitely return for fun. There's a decent amount of people you share the experience with, but the keeper is excellent at giving everyone lettuce equally so everyone gets to feed them a bunch. THE MOST STARS I'VE EVER GIVEN. Definitely definitely definitely go. This is the greatest experience ever. I'm a huge animal lover and this is one of my favorite things I've ever done. This is not a gimmick, but a real animal encounter where you get to actually interact with the animals and they are treated well. We drove into town the day of our reservation and overestimated how long it would take to get there. We called and switched our reservation to earlier in the day with no problems. While you're waiting, they have other animals in the lobby you can interact with, like bunnies. Once we got into the room with the capybaras, we were introduced to them by name. The staff member that was with us gave us a lot of interesting information about the capybaras, and gave us kale to get them to come to us. They were very interactive, and would even climb on our laps. They're so cute! I can't even describe it. The place is actually run by an animal sanctuary, who started the café as a way to raise money for the animals' care. So not only is it an awesome experience, but it benefits the animals. We had heard that you needed to book your experience at least a month out, but we stopped by to see if there were any cancellations or opportunities to book today. We were told there were two available spots at the 3:30 time slot. Yay! My friend and I purchased the 30 minute capybara encounter experience. We enjoyed petting and playing with two baby capybaras. A highlight of the experience was feeding kale to the capybaras. They ate handfuls of kale, one piece at a time, directly from our hands. Our host, Khafir, was enthusiastic and informative. He answered all our many questions, and we learned all about capybaras. Before and after our encounter we were able to visit the guinea pigs and see the capybara merchandise available. Capybara Café was a super fun and unique experience--definitely worth a visit for animal lovers! You get to pet and feed capybaras, an armadillo, and ferrets, with a clean, well-maintained environment that doesn't have that typical animal smell. The interaction area is separate from the rest of the shop, and while waiting, you can chill with guinea pigs, a snake in a container, and what looked like Mongolian hamsters by the entrance. The guinea pigs can be a bit fidgety, but when they settle, they're very cute and pettable. They chop up fresh veggies outside, which was great to see--shows the animals are well cared for. There's also a small gift area with some souvenirs and bottled/canned drinks, which makes the wait pleasant. We booked back in January because weekends fill up fast, and this seems to be one of the few places in the U.S. where you can interact with capybaras. Before entering the feeding area, the staff gives you a run-down on dos and don'ts--it's child-friendly and well-organized. That said, I wish they had a posted animal schedule so guests would know which animals they'd get to see. I was really hoping to interact with the skunk and raccoon, but we saw a wallaby, armadillo, and ferrets instead. The ferrets were cute, but since I already interact with them often, it wasn't as exciting. One downside: while it was cute watching the staff play with and explain the animals, they often ended up hogging the interaction. Several times, the animals would come up to us, only to be intercepted by the staff giving them scratches or showing us how to pet them--which kind of took away from our direct experience. It felt more like we were spectators rather than participants at times. Still, the animals were adorable, the space was clean, and the staff was friendly. Parking is a bit tough, so plan ahead. All in all, a delightful time, just could use a little more hands-on time and transparency with animal schedules. read more

We honestly had no idea what to expect with this experience but it exceeded our expectations and was worth every penny! I love that proceeds help the animals. All the staff were SO knowledgeable about the capybaras. The capybaras were so sweet and friendly and there was no shortage of kale or lettuce to feed them! I learned so much about them. This is a place that gets their animals from breeders. The capybaras seemed cared for, although the experience had us sitting in areas with pee on the floor and poop. Could have been much cleaner. My real issue was the Lemur. This animal seemed very stressed out and did not care for her handler. I really hate that this wild animal is being used for human entertainment and was paid for to live its life in captivity. Additionally there was a wallaby that the handler kept scooping up and cuddling when the children really wanted to see the animal. All in all, I would stick to the capybara experience. The additional animals seemed bummed and are treated as pets when they should be in the wild. read more

Booking my encounter online was very easy and I was able to book months in advance. I recommend booking as far in advance as possible because they book up fast. The encounter I booked was the 30 minute Capybara Encounter. I was worried 30 minutes wouldn't be enough time but after the encounter was over I thought we had a good amount of time to interact with the Capybaras and I felt like it was definitely worth the price. Once we arrived check in was quick, simple and everyone was very friendly. They have a good size waiting area with a cute gift shop and small animals and reptiles you can look at before going back to your encounter. You can tell that all the animals are cared for and loved and the place is clean and well organized. Once you are escorted to the room you immediately see the Capybaras. There was plenty of seating for everyone who booked the encounter and from what I observed everyone got equal amount of time feeding and loving on the Capybaras. During the encounter the staff did an amazing job making sure we constantly had food in our hands to attract the Capybaras to us. They also did a great job telling us facts about these amazing rodents and we learned a lot of new and interesting facts that day. My daughter wanted to do this encounter for her birthday and she had such an amazing experience! We all did! This is definitely an encounter I would book again. read more

If you're on the fence about visiting The Capybara Cafe, just do it! I had such a wonderful time there, you can tell all the animals are well cared for. Their handlers were knowledgeable and careful with them. I would recommend the Capybara and Friends experience! Before visiting the Capybaras, there was an entrance area with goats, ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, a skink, bearded dragon, Hedgehog, and even a Macaw parrot. We got to meet and feed the Capys for 30 minutes. Then, we spent another 30 minutes with the exotic animals, which included a three banded Armadillo named Mike, a Skunk named Flower, a baby Wallaby, and a Lemur named Lucy (who was totally the star of the show). Lucy was not feeling entertaining at first so they didn't want to force her to come out, but she ended up joining us once she peeked through her window and saw that she was missing out, LOL! My co-workers and I stopped by during lunch to visit the Capybara Cafe. It's about $49 per person for half an hour. You can make your reservations online and you have to sign a waiver. If you see the giraffe statue in the front, the front entrance is located in the back. The cafe itself does not serve food other than snacks and chips. The employees were very friendly, gave great introductions and instructions for how to handle the animals. The facility is very clean and well maintained. There are guinea pigs and gerbils you can pet and feed in the main waiting room. When it's time for your reservation, you enter into a smaller room and you get to meet Mocha and Latte who are the two capybaras. The staff gives you plenty of fresh veggies to feed them to get good photos, wonderful pets and to spend quality time with them. Overall, it was a fun experience. Highlight of my entire year. Thoroughly enjoyed the hour-long Capy and Friends experience and am now contemplating how to become a capybara cafe owner and full-time capy snuggler. Absolutely the best. Our guide was wonderful and the animals are amazing. Was a wonderful, pretty unbelievable way to spend the afternoon and I can now brag that a capy fell asleep on me and that a lemur jumped on my head--two things we don't hear very much where I live. My hint to others is that those with littles should wait a bit until you bring them here. Those we saw seemed to have a hard time not doing what the guides asked them not to do, and the animals were not big fans of all the poking and shrieking that came along with tiny fingers and lungs. My daughter and I had such a wonderful experience at the Capybara Cafe! Reservations are a breeze. We were able to get a reservation for the baby capybara experience the day before going, though time slots were limited. Reserve early to insure that you get your preferred experience and time. We got there a little early, but I'm glad that we did. We were able to interact with all of the little animals in the waiting area. They do sell snacks, but we didn't purchase any food. The animals do not live on site, but they are brought over daily from a rescue. We were told that they only bring animals that willingly walk into the transport crate, so you will have an assortment of animals to see if you do the capybara and friends experience. We interacted with the baby capybaras. These little cuties are being "trained" to be near humans. We were not allowed to reach for them, but were allowed to touch and feed them if they came up to us as we sat against a wall. A guide talked to us about the facility and capybaras and was very knowledgeable. We felt that 20 minutes was plenty of time to get a good interaction with the animals.
