It's hard to beat this place's location, if you want to run a few miles in the park across the street and then reverse any progress you may have made, and then some, by consuming copious quantities of beer, pizza and what have you I can confirm as much, having done so yesterday. I met here with members of a local running group for one of their periodic pub runs. It was extremely cold when I got there, despite having been nearly 90 degrees out the day before. Several members of our group stood in the doorway, preventing other patrons from entering and exiting. Modern's staff deserves credit for not complaining or forcing them to leave. They may have sensed that this wasn't the local unhoused population. Only employed people run recreationally, despite having relatively little free time. I see this place all the time, from my car on the adjacent highway, on my way back to civilization, but I'd never had the occasion to stop by. Perhaps I'd be a regular if I attended the nearby community college. But if I could afford to eat here, why would I be attending community college? The beer will set you back. I would have been fine with a 32 oz can of Miller High Life, but when in Rome. There's an extensive selection of beers on tap, and probably even more in cans and bottles. I'm no connoisseur, and I don't have that kind of time, so I went with something called Silent Gs, or something to that effect. I justified it, in part, by telling myself that its name is a reference to the Lil Wayne bar adored by people who started listening to rap music in 2003. I paid $7.50-ish for a not particularly large serving, but damn it if it wasn't pretty good. I appreciate it anytime one of these higher gravity pale ales doesn't taste like it was sourced from a trough-style urinal at a circa '83 ballpark. A couple of girls from the aforementioned run group mentioned that this place carries a brussels spouts salad. I don't eat salad, because I'm a guy, but these girls are certified baddies, and I succumbed to the peer pressure. I attempted to mitigate the impact on my reputation by also ordering a slice of pepperoni pizza. I'm gonna have to have a difficult meeting with my accountant, as a result, but it was worth it. The entree serving of the salad would have been enough food, even without the pizza. It's enough vegetables that it's actually kinda obnoxious, like they're trolling you. Who do they think I am, a damn cow? Part of that may have been the brussels sprouts. They help give the salad a surprising heft, for something that doesn't have any meat in it, and help make up for the lack of bacon, which I generally require with brussels sprouts. The candied walnuts, which I thought might be croutons, were another delightful surprise and complemented the tang of the pickled red onions. The pizza came topped with an oddly precise-looking quantity and arrangement of pepperonis, like they might have Russell Crowe from the movie A Beautiful Mind working in the kitchen. It's not like at Domino's, where they just toss them on there and they might not even be on half the pizza. I guess they have to do that when they sell it by the slice. You'd be upset if you didn't get enough of them, because they're delicious. They're the kind that curl up into little cups filled with disgustingly unhealthy and yet delicious oil. I wonder if that's also because they serve it by the slice and hence have to reheat it. That may have resulted in the end of the crust suffering from a bit of Popeyes biscuit-like dryness, but what are you going to do. Then again, that may have been a purposeful attempt to get you to purchase more expensive beer. Before going: Definitely allow yourself some extra time to find a table if you are meeting a group of people. It's a seat yourself establishment. Big groups are harder to seat if it's packed! They have a lot of seating outside, but the weather wasn't great for us to do that. We had to wait around for a table big enough to seat us all inside. My husband and I ordered the burger with pimento cheese and added bacon, and it came with fries. We also got a salad. The salad was nothing fancy, but it felt like a lettuce tossed in sauce. My friends ordered some other items (tacos, wings, pizza, and salads) and a couple of beers. No complaints there. Modern Brewery is such a standout. Their food is exceptional--the pizza alone is worth the visit. The Charlie Murphy pizza is a must-order with the perfect balance of spices and bold flavor, and their barbacoa is insanely good. The sandwiches are served on the freshest, fluffiest focaccia-style bread that somehow manages to be both light and hearty at the same time. As a sour beer lover, I'm picky--and they absolutely nail it. Their sours are bright, balanced, and done really well. I've had modern brewery a few times but realized I've never written a review! It's usually really packed, so you mig hit need to try to go at odd times, but service has always been super quick, no matter how busy it is. The location is great and super open space, plus a nice patio! I haven't gotten beer here before but everyone I've gone with loves it. I've loved all the cocktails I tried too, especially the strawberry one! Fries are always delicious. The bacon cheese fries are some of my fav in St. Louis! I've also tired the barbacoa melt and the chicken sandwich (buffalo/spicy style). Went to Modern Brewery this week and I enjoyed enjoyed the food & atmosphere. I was surprised to see they had a special on crawfish handpies & the person at the register said they were good so I had to order it. She is right. It was good. Fresh, cooked perfectly to be crisp on the outside and warm/hot throughout. Not quite as good as in Mississippi or Louisiana but it was tasty. And perfect for lunch with a side salad. I got a Caesar and added bacon cause I'd heard the word. Was yummy. One of the folks had wings and fries, they looked awesome and she said they were great. Someone else had and loved the Bibb Salad with green goddess dressing. The only meal someone said was just ok was a slice she ordered. Everything came out really quickly. I find it kind of weird that I saw lots of large red cups that said Coke on them but ordering a Coke meant getting that cup with ice and a can. There is a full bar, a fountain drink would have made more sense and would have been more likely to fill the cup: I was there for a business lunch, a small group. We booked the small room at the side which was nice. We were asked to go to the counter to order rather than use the QR code for some reason. Only complaint on the space was it was freezing cold. I did bring a jacket though I hadn't needed it outside but the AC was insane. I would have moved, maybe to the patio but the work thing ya know. It perfectly suits meeting up with friends for a few beers or bites. Super cool place. Only complaint is holy cow, there were a million kids running around (I've noticed this recent trend- tons of kids at area breweries). The kids didn't bother me, but just a heads up in case you're one of those "get off my lawn" types. Also, we were there on a Saturday evening, and it was packed. It's seat yourself, so you might have to search for an open table. Food orders are at the counter. The line was long, but it moved really quickly. Food was outstanding. I had the schnitzel slider, hubs had the crab cake sandwich. For as crowded as the place was, the time to get the food was very reasonable. It was hot and absolutely delicious. The beer was also awesome. I had the Dessert Island Cherry Cordial (yes, dessert, not desert). OhmyLawd it was divine. Sadly they ran out before I could get a 2nd round of that. When they brought the food out to the table, they didn't always bother to find the person who ordered the item., They just left it on the table. My husband and I have been fans of modern brewery for many years, frequently patronizing their operation on Manchester prior to opening this amazing establishment on Oakland. Why? The beer is amazing. This is coming from someone who's not particularly fond of craft beers. Birdman is the beer that changed my mind and to this day is still my favorite!! Over the years, I've tried a number of Modern's beers and although they all may have not been my cup of tea, the quality and passion is in each one. In our most recent visit, I finally tried the food and I was impressed. The portions are very generous and priced well. If you know me, I like to start my tasting experience with small plates to get a feel for the place, so that's what we did. Here is my take on each: Brussels Sprouts salad - Delicious! A very generous portion for a side salad and great flavor. Cajun Arancini - These were so good. A crispy, crunchy exterior with a creamy, cheesy interior. I was not a fan of the dipper. Luckily, they were just fine without any dipper but I would have preferred a marinara or something with more bite. Crushpuppies - Wow! These were wonderful. Again, a crispy, crunchy bite with goodness inside. Unlike the arancini, I think these needed a dipping sauce, perhaps more of the drizzling sauce on the side. Korean tacos - These were a little too sweet but had good heat. The tacos came heaped with meat, almost too much meat. Is that a thing? For me it was...maybe using a larger tortilla would help. Modern is a vibe of its own that offers great beer (wine and cocktails) and good food. Come for the beer but definitely try the food!! You won't be disappointed. There are no servers here. You either need to go up to the order area to get your drink or food or scan a QR code to order. I have mixed feelings with this. On one hand, you don't need to wait for someone to come around place your order but on the other hand, having a server provides more of a personable and connected experience. Definitely not a dealbreaker, though. I love Modern and will continue to frequent this establishment as the beers and food change. You've gotta try it all, right?!? Kudos to Modern Brewery!! Great spot for happy hour or a casual hangout after work. I came here with coworkers and had a really good time. The space is open with plenty of seating and there's a private room for events. They also have outdoor seating! There's a HUGE selection of beer and cocktails. I wish they had mocktails since they're my favorite but that's okay. I tried a modern mimosa beer! Also we tried a mix of their beers, pizzas, and the fried chicken sandwich with cajun fries. The sandwich was huge and super crispy. Definitely filling and flavorful! Parking can be tricky depending on when you go and you might need to park on the street which isn't too bad since it's right there in the same street. This is the type of place I find perplexing. Modern feel, up scale .. ish, trying to be hip and trendy. Ambiance feels nice at first glance, but this place leaves A LOT to be desired in most aspects of their concept. I feel first and foremost they want to be bar. But their menu is really nice with great offerings. It's their execution that fails miserably. You walk in, there's a big sign that tells you to seat your self, remember your table number, then come to the bar to order your food. You then wait in line to order. Once you order, you gotta take the drinks back to the table yourself. Any water you want is self serve from a spigot on the wall around the corner. You then wait, and wait, and wait for your food to be brought to you. Entrees don't even come out at the same time, so the first person in my part already has cold food by the time the last person is getting their dinner. The biggest slap in the face? When ordering and paying for your order, the lowest auto tip % their system offers is 20% ?!?!?!? You kidding me? This is a nearly 90% self serve establishment. They take your order, and bring you your food. That's it!!! And they want 20%?? Restaurant owner, please reconsider this ridiculous ask. Restaurant patrons, PLEASE stop feeding in to this social concept of tipping. I'm 100% for no tipping at all and make the restaurants price their menu items accordingly. Between their IPAs and Stouts you could argue one of the top breweries in the State - though don't sleep on the food in the brewery or their other styles. I enjoyed a flight of the darker variety. I got a Diet Coke (not a drinker) and a slice of the Charlie Murphy (red sauce base, mozzarella, sausage, pepperoni, whipped ricotta, fresh basil, and hot honey drizzle) Pizza. It's a large slice. This is a hand tossed fermented dough. Very flavorful and nice. I thought the slice was nice and crisp. I'm curious if it would be the same if you ordered the whole pizza or if it was extra crispy because of the recook on the slice. I liked the char and the slim cornicione of the crust. I am an online food and entertainment reviewer who reviews the St Louis and Chicago markets, besides being a Yelp Elite. Sometimes I wonder why entrepreneurs choose the things they do in the restaurant business. Modern Brewery/Kings Oak should just stick to the brewery. The food struck out on so many levels. In their mission statement they talk more about the beer and the "cozy and lively atmosphere" than they do about the food. I ordered the Schnitzel Slider which is PORK TENDERLOIN, slaw, pickle, mustard on a brioche bun. When I see pork tenderloin I expect a nice piece of juicy grilled tenderloin. No, the sandwich came out and was a long thin FRIED piece that stuck out over the bun by 3 inches on each side. And honestly, mixing slaw with mustard? Horrible. I also ordered Butternut Squash soup. I've some really good and some really bad. By nature, butternut squash soup should be smooth, sweet and creamy. This was slightly spicy and was on the thinner side. They have a self serve water station with a faucet and plastic cups. But, NO ice. Room temp water just isn't good. My girlfriend ordered the burger which is a smash burger with arugula and aioli. It was horrible. We thought it was the burger that had a funny taste. We believe it was the aioli. I mean c'mon, who screws up a burger. To add insult to injury, as I was finishing up the Brussels sprouts there was a sizable although small piece of burger on the plate. The bus staff swoops in and takes the plate without asking if I was done. I will say this, the Brussels sprouts with lemon vinaigrette and candied walnuts was very good. With a lot of good restaurants in St Louis, restaurant pricing sky high, and tons of competition for your food dollar I cannot in good conscious recommend this restaurant. read more

The overall vibe is very chill and this is a great spot for a weeknight beer/dinner or a weekend outing. They have a dog-friendly patio and I even saw a few families with kids when I came! I've ordered their Octoberfest on multiple occasions and have to say, Modern Brewery's Octoberfest is the best one that I have had in the St. Louis area. It's light, crisp, and tasty. So far I have also been able to try their fried chicken sandwich, Kings Oak double cheeseburger, naked wings, and crushpuppies. The fried chicken sandwich is a decent fried chicken sandwich with buttermilk and a side of crispy and flavorful fries. The double cheeseburger is delicious and the crushpuppies are a nice take on hush puppies but with crab. Finally, the naked wings are large in portion size, crispy, and flavorful. We decided to visit on a day the Blues were playing and City had a match later on. It was pretty crowded with families with young kids and large groups but we got in on the patio no problem with it being chilly. We moved inside to sit at the bar to order food after awhile. I believe with the location being right off Hwy 40 this is a popular spot for people traveling into the city. The atmosphere is positive, staff was very friendly, multiple people helped us order during the time we were there. Food wise - We had Crushpuppies (hushpuppies/crab cakes) to start and they were incredible, I've never had anything like them before. We tried the pepperoni pizza bread, the focaccia was great but the sauce provided tasted similar to a Lunchable's pizza sauce. The buffalo chicken sandwich was just okay, flavor was good but construction and finish on the fry was off making it an odd consistency. Overall it was a good trip in and I'm glad we tried it. read more
