Love Modern Brewery. Well run establishment. Great service and food. The beer is excellent. They have specials and cocktails as well. Nice menu with salads, sandwiches and apps. The patio is fabulous. Sit outside and watch the Autobahn that is highway 40. On Oakland near the science center. Go here on a beautiful night and people watch. Family friendly as I saw lots of babies! Everything here is top notch quality and quantity. Head here with all of your friends for an enjoyable time!

Before going: Definitely allow yourself some extra time to find a table if you are meeting a group of people. It's a seat yourself establishment. Big groups are harder to seat if it's packed! They have a lot of seating outside, but the weather wasn't great for us to do that. We had to wait around for a table big enough to seat us all inside. My husband and I ordered the burger with pimento cheese and added bacon, and it came with fries. We also got a salad. The salad was nothing fancy, but it felt like a lettuce tossed in sauce. My friends ordered some other items (tacos, wings, pizza, and salads) and a couple of beers. No complaints there. They did forget one of our burgers, but it was resolved after we let them know.

The Turkey Club, no mustard, is my new favorite sandwich, period. It's huge, could only have 1/2 of it, but the aioli with the lettuce and pickles works great with turkey, cheese and bacon. That bread is buttery and delicious all together. The Caymus small bottle, amazing wine!

Modern Brewery is such a standout. Their food is exceptional--the pizza alone is worth the visit. The Charlie Murphy pizza is a must-order with the perfect balance of spices and bold flavor, and their barbacoa is insanely good. The sandwiches are served on the freshest, fluffiest focaccia-style bread that somehow manages to be both light and hearty at the same time. As a sour beer lover, I'm picky--and they absolutely nail it. Their sours are bright, balanced, and done really well. I've also tried several of their cocktails, and the spritz cocktails in particular are fantastic--refreshing, well-crafted, and perfect for sipping. Amazing food, great drinks, and a place I keep wanting to come back to.

Great local craft beers and creative food variety for a brewery - loved their options from apps, sandwiches/salads/soups to freshly made whole Pizzas (or by the slice)! Relaxing, casual and contemporary ambience with Fast casual friendly service. Order both drinks and food at the bar; grab your beverages from bartender, pick a table or patio seating, and food comes out quickly. Overall, a 4.0 rated experience for me. Expect to pay $10-20pp for food, plus any drinks ordered. Today we stopped in for a cleansing ale and evening snack. Kept it simple with a Citrapolis Hazy IPA, some "Crushpuppies" and a "build your own" Pie. The Crushpuppies was their version of a Crab Cake & Hush Puppy mixed, then served with Remoulade and Hot Honey drizzle. An interesting combo for sure, but a tasty starter to share. Our order came out a bit "well done", but flavorful to eat. Plenty of other starter options to choose if this creative app is not your vibe. For Pizza, we ordered a Pepperoni, Mushroom and Pepperoncini whole pie. Served hot from the oven, this was excellent with uncured pepperoni, fresh shrooms and spicy Pepperoncini's; I like "hot & spicy", but should've eased up on how much crushed red pepper I added as Pepperoncini's already gave it a really nice kick!! The crust was good, but a bit heavier than NY thin crust; and for me, glad the cheese was not Provel blend but a generous portion of Mozzarella...my kinda melted gooey cheese atop a pie! Can't wait to come back and sample other selections on their food menu as well as some of the other brews and beverages! Cheers, ENJOY!!

First of all, loved all the huge windows. Great burger, the aioli was a nice flavor. Fries were solid too. I'd come back for the turkey sandwich too, looked incredible!

Very spacious and comfortable. Better food options than most breweries around St. Louis. You order at the bar but easy and quick. We essentially served ourselves besides delivering and cleaning up our table but exactly what you would expect at a standard brewery. Great chill hangout location will definitely be going back. A nice variety of beers which everyone enjoyed!

I've had modern brewery a few times but realized I've never written a review! It's usually really packed, so you mig hit need to try to go at odd times, but service has always been super quick, no matter how busy it is. The location is great and super open space, plus a nice patio! I haven't gotten beer here before but everyone I've gone with loves it. I've loved all the cocktails I tried too, especially the strawberry one! Fries are always delicious. The bacon cheese fries are some of my fav in St. Louis! I've also tired the barbacoa melt and the chicken sandwich (buffalo/spicy style). The barbacoa melt was absolutely perfect, the focaccia is delicious and it's great portions - I took home half and it was amazing leftover too!The chicken sandwich was great too, but definitely would lean towards the barbacoa melt in the future.

My lunch

Went to Modern Brewery this week and I enjoyed enjoyed the food & atmosphere. I was surprised to see they had a special on crawfish handpies & the person at the register said they were good so I had to order it. She is right. It was good. Fresh, cooked perfectly to be crisp on the outside and warm/hot throughout. Not quite as good as in Mississippi or Louisiana but it was tasty. And perfect for lunch with a side salad. I got a Caesar and added bacon cause I'd heard the word. Was yummy. One of the folks had wings and fries, they looked awesome and she said they were great. Someone else had and loved the Bibb Salad with green goddess dressing. The only meal someone said was just ok was a slice she ordered. Everything came out really quickly. I find it kind of weird that I saw lots of large red cups that said Coke on them but ordering a Coke meant getting that cup with ice and a can. There is a full bar, a fountain drink would have made more sense and would have been more likely to fill the cup: I was there for a business lunch, a small group. We booked the small room at the side which was nice. We were asked to go to the counter to order rather than use the QR code for some reason. Only complaint on the space was it was freezing cold. I did bring a jacket though I hadn't needed it outside but the AC was insane. I would have moved, maybe to the patio but the work thing ya know. It perfectly suits meeting up with friends for a few beers or bites. Will remember it's there as the proximity to highways and Forest Park & the Science Center makes it a good option for various meetups.

Pork schnitzel slider

Super cool place. Only complaint is holy cow, there were a million kids running around (I've noticed this recent trend- tons of kids at area breweries). The kids didn't bother me, but just a heads up in case you're one of those "get off my lawn" types. Also, we were there on a Saturday evening, and it was packed. It's seat yourself, so you might have to search for an open table. Food orders are at the counter. The line was long, but it moved really quickly. Food was outstanding. I had the schnitzel slider, hubs had the crab cake sandwich. For as crowded as the place was, the time to get the food was very reasonable. It was hot and absolutely delicious. The beer was also awesome. I had the Dessert Island Cherry Cordial (yes, dessert, not desert). OhmyLawd it was divine. Sadly they ran out before I could get a 2nd round of that. We also had the Bird Man and Disco punch, which were also excellent. Really glad we finally decided to try this place out. We'd definitely come back.

We're glad to have finally been able to stop by since all other times we weren't able to find parking... Diverse beer selection and Cajun-inspired menu. Although we liked our beers a lot, our food order was only ok. Willing to visit again to try more of there beers.

Paloma
Wanda H.

The food here was absolutely delicious. The Paloma on draft was very tasty also. The service was a bit lacking. When they brought the food out to the table, they didn't always bother to find the person who ordered the item., They just left it on the table. A lot of places nowadays are loud, but this place beat most of them. It was obnoxiously LOUD. And then they had music playing on top of it. Not a place I'd pick to go to again. And that's a shame, because the food is really good.

Crushpupies

My husband and I have been fans of modern brewery for many years, frequently patronizing their operation on Manchester prior to opening this amazing establishment on Oakland. Why? The beer is amazing. This is coming from someone who's not particularly fond of craft beers. Birdman is the beer that changed my mind and to this day is still my favorite!! Over the years, I've tried a number of Modern's beers and although they all may have not been my cup of tea, the quality and passion is in each one. In our most recent visit, I finally tried the food and I was impressed. The portions are very generous and priced well. If you know me, I like to start my tasting experience with small plates to get a feel for the place, so that's what we did. Here is my take on each: Brussels Sprouts salad - Delicious! A very generous portion for a side salad and great flavor. Cajun Arancini - These were so good. A crispy, crunchy exterior with a creamy, cheesy interior. I was not a fan of the dipper. Luckily, they were just fine without any dipper but I would have preferred a marinara or something with more bite. Crushpuppies - Wow! These were wonderful. Again, a crispy, crunchy bite with goodness inside. Unlike the arancini, I think these needed a dipping sauce, perhaps more of the drizzling sauce on the side. Korean tacos - These were a little too sweet but had good heat. The tacos came heaped with meat, almost too much meat. Is that a thing? For me it was...maybe using a larger tortilla would help. Modern is a vibe of its own that offers great beer (wine and cocktails) and good food. Come for the beer but definitely try the food!! You won't be disappointed. There are no servers here. You either need to go up to the order area to get your drink or food or scan a QR code to order. I have mixed feelings with this. On one hand, you don't need to wait for someone to come around place your order but on the other hand, having a server provides more of a personable and connected experience. Definitely not a dealbreaker, though. I love Modern and will continue to frequent this establishment as the beers and food change. You've gotta try it all, right?!? Kudos to Modern Brewery!! A St. Louis MUST visit. Can't wait for warmer weather to enjoy a drink and pizza on the patio.

Lively atmosphere, bartenders were welcoming and interactive. We ordered the Hot Cheese curds as an appetizer, and I got the Obscura as me beer of choice. Not going to lie, the cheese curds were as advertised! They were hot! Not so much that I couldn't handle but don't take them lightly, they are good. They came drizzled with a good ranch. The beer was great, especially with the hot cheese curds. Ordered the Friday Fish Sando with no cheese. Came out in a timely manner, large and crispy! It was messy in the best way. Crispy, beer battered cod, lettuce, and house made tarter. It was juicy on the inside with none of the batter mush you can sometimes get with fried fish, loved the house made tarter, all-around great sandwich. The fries were on point, too. Crispy but not greasy. Great space, friendly staff, good food!

I enjoyed that quiet space for a bit and the afternoon air after the walk from Cortex made the wait feel intentional rather than inconvenient. Comfortable seating out here and the light breeze with the afternoon light was nice as I cranked out a few Yelp reviews before I spotted other customers going inside. After setting up at the huge table in the corner, I stepped up to the bar where I was warmly greeted. I chose their Fish Fry, which they call a light lager. It was in a huge mug and that worked out just fine for me as it lasted a while. Oh, and some chicken wings. These were tasty buggers. Served quite hot with a rub that was more spice than sauce. Very yummy and the two sauces were perfect accompaniment. Absolutely delicious. Not long after, friends arrived and I shifted from solo laptop time to conversation. It's nice to see how Rockwell handles the flow of customers. Casual, attentive, friendly. Just right for a great brewpub and a great time. They do have a parking lot. It was just an easy experience today and a great spot for a meetup or hanging out on your own. [Round number review 400 of 2026 - 498 in Missouri - 25583 overall]

The acoustics at times are loud, but you can still hear your friends gathered around the table. My recent visit as always, was to meet-up with some friends. I started out with a Raspberry Beret one of their specialty cocktails. It was my favorite vodka, Tito's with Raspberry syrup and lemon. It was shaken, not stirred and severed up like a martini. Prince would have given it a thumbs up. After some intense conversations with my buds, I ordered some food and a beer. I typically get their famous burger with fries or the chicken wings, but I got adventurous and ordered the nachos. When I asked the bartender how they were, he said that's what he was having for dinner and showed me his plate which sold me. It may have only been an appetizer, but it was filling and easy to eat while enjoying more convo. I'm a fan of Avery Brewing in Colorado, so I had their White Rascal as my beer. Rockwell is so close to getting a 5 Star rating from me, but they keep missing the mark on the customer service. It's good, but some of the staff treat older customers differently then those their age. This visit, one of them was cold and had attitude. After a few tips, they warmed up and provided friendly service and actually got chatty. So I think next time, they may just get the bump to 5.

St. Louis is lousy with these microbreweries--this part of town in particular, to the point where,…read moreas I ran the streets of the surrounding area, I was violently assaulted with what must be the smell of beer as it's being brewed. It's not altogether different from the smell of beer as it's coming back up, and it called to mind my illustrious, mostly-forgotten-at-this-point college years. I was suddenly compelled to listen to Cannibal Ox and watch certain videos that I'd pilfered from Kazaa, and it's probably for the best that I didn't have access to a circa 1998 Compaq Presario in that moment. The vibe in Bluewood Brewing is a lot classier. There's no "Iron Galaxy" over the PA. The lights are dimmed, which I imagine would be convenient if there was someone there you owed money to. I was particularly impressed with a long table on the patio. I remarked to a member of my running group that it almost certainly didn't come from IKEA. The wood was of too high a quality. The food menu is limited to a small selection of standard sports-bar fare, but this is not anywhere you'd go to watch the game. They might not have any TVs. Did they spend too much on the table? Also, they don't sell any beer in cans, that I'm aware of, which I generally prefer as someone who, as the evening progresses, is prone to dropping things. I went with something called Crush, which is an orange-flavored high-gravity IPA. It was the highest ABV selection on their regular beer menu, but it also costs a little bit more, so you're not really getting over on them--unless you thought to "pregame." I found it to be both less "stiff" than I was expecting and less orange-tasting, in a good way but also in a bad way, in that anything that fails to conform to expectation is at least somewhat disappointing. I was expecting paint thinner and orange juice. I got something that was balanced and flavorful. From the food menu, I got the daily special, which was a sort of elevated patty melt called the Stable Melt. It came with two all-beef patties, Swiss, caramelized onions and "Frisco" sauce on Union Loafers marbled rye, with your choice of chips or fries. It was $18, and as I was standing there a guy came out and changed the price to $19, presumably due to developments in the war with Iran. I was assured that I'd be "grandfathered in" at $18, but I'm not sure if he told the guy at the register and I didn't bother to check. It wasn't necessarily my kind of thing, but it was a great burger. The name-brand bread alone nearly justified the price increase. The meat was generously proportioned (no Diddy), but it didn't quite extend to the edges of the bread. Perhaps if it were one larger patty? The onions gave it a sophisticated Salisbury steak vibe, wholly superior to Hungry Man. The fries called to mind the fries at Wendy's. If only they offered a Frosty to dip them in. It wouldn't necessarily go with their beer. I'd suggest they put bourbon or something in it, but I shudder to think what they might charge.

I'm doing some low-carb eating, so I had them prepared with no sauce and even plain they were top-notch. The pieces were good sized and super crisp and juicy. I eat a lot of wings and I am always a happy eater when, my flats and drums are the same quantity. Just a quirk of mine. Dieting does have some disadvantages. I came with my parents and husband and we all agreed it was a great idea and a very comfortable space, perfect for what was needed. I was surprised at how relatively ample the parking was here despite its proximity to the city. We found a spot with no problems. There were discreet signs that directed us up the stairs to where the event was held. It was spacious, airy, and cool, with a decent number of tables and a very nice large bar, as well as restrooms for both men and women. Our family members who spoke were able to stand on a small stage and share their thoughts. The food was served buffet style in front of the stage. Although you'd think it might be hard to hear given the acoustics, they worked out a way to make it so their speeches could be heard easily. Even visiting with other folks after they spoke, it never became too loud to hear each other. There are also nice TVs which displayed photos of the family. Although we used the space for a celebration of life, I can imagine it would be a good fit for all sorts of events, from corporate parties to just a chill hang out space when it's open to the public. It did get a little bit hot in the space as the event wore on, but it wasn't intolerable. The food and drinks were also quite tasty, especially for catered/buffet style food. There were pretzel bites and cheese dip and three different types of slider burgers: a standard/original burger, a taco burger, and an Impossible burger. The pretzel bites were crispy and buttery. I had a taco burger slider. It was a tiny bit dry but had a great flavor. The bartenders were great -- friendly, answering questions, working efficiently, and very kind to all the guests. Husband enjoyed the beers he tried and my mom and I both ordered the "Cranberry Crush," which was a yummy (and strong!) cocktail that was bright and perfectly sweet.
