St. Louis is lousy with these microbreweries--this part of town in particular, to the point where, as I ran the streets of the surrounding area, I was violently assaulted with what must be the smell of beer as it's being brewed. It's not altogether different from the smell of beer as it's coming back up, and it called to mind my illustrious, mostly-forgotten-at-this-point college years. I was suddenly compelled to listen to Cannibal Ox and watch certain videos that I'd pilfered from Kazaa, and it's probably for the best that I didn't have access to a circa 1998 Compaq Presario in that moment. The vibe in Bluewood Brewing is a lot classier. There's no "Iron Galaxy" over the PA. The lights are dimmed, which I imagine would be convenient if there was someone there you owed money to. I was particularly impressed with a long table on the patio. I remarked to a member of my running group that it almost certainly didn't come from IKEA. The wood was of too high a quality. The food menu is limited to a small selection of standard sports-bar fare, but this is not anywhere you'd go to watch the game. They might not have any TVs. Did they spend too much on the table? Also, they don't sell any beer in cans, that I'm aware of, which I generally prefer as someone who, as the evening progresses, is prone to dropping things. I went with something called Crush, which is an orange-flavored high-gravity IPA. It was the highest ABV selection on their regular beer menu, but it also costs a little bit more, so you're not really getting over on them--unless you thought to "pregame." I found it to be both less "stiff" than I was expecting and less orange-tasting, in a good way but also in a bad way, in that anything that fails to conform to expectation is at least somewhat disappointing. I was expecting paint thinner and orange juice. I got something that was balanced and flavorful. From the food menu, I got the daily special, which was a sort of elevated patty melt called the Stable Melt. It came with two all-beef patties, Swiss, caramelized onions and "Frisco" sauce on Union Loafers marbled rye, with your choice of chips or fries. It was $18, and as I was standing there a guy came out and changed the price to $19, presumably due to developments in the war with Iran. I was assured that I'd be "grandfathered in" at $18, but I'm not sure if he told the guy at the register and I didn't bother to check. It wasn't necessarily my kind of thing, but it was a great burger. The name-brand bread alone nearly justified the price increase. The meat was generously proportioned (no Diddy), but it didn't quite extend to the edges of the bread. Perhaps if it were one larger patty? The onions gave it a sophisticated Salisbury steak vibe, wholly superior to Hungry Man. The fries called to mind the fries at Wendy's. If only they offered a Frosty to dip them in. It wouldn't necessarily go with their beer. I'd suggest they put bourbon or something in it, but I shudder to think what they might charge. read more

Bluewood Brewing is one of the shining stars on Cherokee Street. I enjoy the rustic and comfortable atmosphere that they have created from an old stable house. The bartenders are friendly and if you can't decide what beer to order, they're knowledgeable and will help you pick the right one for you. Mac's Burgers has long been gone, but the kitchen is still putting out some damn good food. I enjoyed some plain chicken wings. I'm doing some low-carb eating, so I had them prepared with no sauce and even plain they were top-notch. The pieces were good sized and super crisp and juicy. I eat a lot of wings and I am always a happy eater when, my flats and drums are the same quantity. Just a quirk of mine. Dieting does have some disadvantages. I normally order fries with my wings and I had to miss out this time. However, my mouth was drooling seeing servings of fries at tables around me. 0/5 - Absolutely Unacceptable Experience We made a reservation for a family event at Bluewood Brewing and what happened was shockingly unprofessional and hostile. I personally reserved the space with their event coordinator, Lauren, and confirmed the reservation the day before. Despite this, when our party arrived, we were met with rudeness, abruptly kicked out of the barrel room, and told the kitchen was closed--with no warning, no explanation, and no attempt to accommodate us. We had hungry children with us. Instead of offering any solution, the owner was unapologetic, dismissive, and completely unsympathetic. His response was to complain about how many hours he had worked that week and to state that "his job was not customer service." At one point his behavior felt borderline threatening. No apology. No effort to fix the situation. No concern for families or children. Our family event was completely ruined due to their incompetence and hostility. An establishment that treats paying customers--especially families--this way has no business operating. If you value basic respect, professionalism, or reliable reservations, do not frequent this place. read more

The next stop of "Tour De St. Louis" with my friend from out of town was Bluewood Brewing. Parking is limited to street parking but we walked over from where we were previously to not have to move the car around. When you walk in, this massively beautiful chandelier and wall of beers meets you. My friend and I had a couple of brews and played funny card games at our table. When our order was up of wings and fries, I was satisfied with the wings having a nice crunch and the fries having good seasoning! There is also a piano near the restrooms that kind of gave me old school vibes. I played a song on it real quick without feeling like I was annoying guests. I went to Bluewood Brewing for the Sunday night steak dinner meal and loved my meal and it was reasonably priced for a delicious ribeye meal with Montreal butter and with two sides that included a baked potato and asparagus. For the past few years I've been coming to Bluewood regularly for drinks since I catch shows often down the street at Off Broadway so I love all their ales, porters, and stouts. The building is a very cool old space in St. Louis and the service has always been good. I wished they had a sign saying to order at the bar since it took a few awkward seconds to realize that when I walked up to the food window where the food menu was and attempted to order there. I definitely want to go back for the hot fried chicken sandwich that uses STL red hot riblet potato chips for breading next time I go, it looks great. read more

This was my first time at bluewood. I arrived early for a comedy show. I had a beer and then ordered food and another beer. I got the Nashville Hot Chicken sandwich with fries seasoned with red hot riplet dust. The fries were perfect. Golden, slightly crispy, warm, smooth, salty, sweet, spicy, and addicting. The chicken sandwich is made with two big chicken thighs. The sandwich looks and js amazing but without knowing it was a thigh I was concerned after seeing how juicy and not the opaque white I would see in a chicken beast. Half way through I went to ask about it and they informed me they're chicken thighs and they temperature check every one to 170 degrees. That was enough for me to enjoy the rest of it. Bluewood opened in the former Lemp stables in 2019. The high ceilings and dark wood give the place rustic charm. Every beer here is a winner! There's a decent variety--heavy on IPAs, but also including a Kolsh (Sparkly Bits--crisp and refreshing!), brown ales, lagers, several stouts, & more. And the food has been fantastic since Bluewood took over their own kitchen. Fried chicken is their specialty and shows up on sandwiches and salads. Fries are hot and crispy; try the seasoned option for a little kick. Salads are a nice size and have very well-balanced flavors; the butternut squash salad is tossed in a tangy roasted red pepper sauce that has just a bit of sweetness. Staff is congenial and helpful with those "what beer should I try next?" choices. And events are well-done here too; check the online calendar for schedule of bingo, trivia, and live entertainment. There is a beautiful chandelier and the building itself is unique. I got a sour beer to drink. My husband got the pumpkin beer and both were delicious. We got to go on a tour of the brewing process hosted by the owner and it was very interesting and informational. Bluewood also has a food menu. Been meaning to check it out for years, timing was perfect early on a Friday evening, semi crowded but easily got a table. Ordered food at the separate counter, the guy that took our order was also the one making food, absolute pro, got to business but was polite. While we waited we got a couple beers at the bar, quick and friendly bartenders. I had a canned IPA from Bluewood Brewing from my most recent trip to St. Louis and was so impressed that I knew I had to try more. Bluewood Brewing is a microbrewery in St. Louis, Missouri in the Benton Park District neighborhood. They specialize in unique artisan ales, including barrel-aged beers and wild fermentation ales. I had the gambit ranging from all type of styles and even got a 4 pack to bring back home with me. Sparkly Bits: A Kolsch in all its glory. Crisp and refreshing with notes of pear and peach and finishes with a medium hop bitterness. Arch City Haze: A New England style IPA that has a nice golden haze. Medium-high stone fruit juice with some notes of dank overripeness. Battle Stag: An American Brown Ale that has more bitterness than the English variety, but still showcases that toasted nut and a hint of roastiness. They add a bit of lactose which makes it have a nice creamy finish. Bliss & Solitude: An English style Barleywine. You knew I would order it when I see a base barleywine on the menu. Nice dark fruit character that leaned towards the sweet side of the fruits like fig and dates. Finishes with elevated fruitiness and a bit of alcohol warmth. Barrel Aged Cafe Noir: A Coffee Stout aged in 100% Weller Special Reserve Bourbon Barrels. Bluewood Brewing has a great location, ambiance, friendly staff and delicious beer! I have been to Bluewood several times and each time the staff is friendly and welcoming! They offer a wide range of craft beer with many different styles of beer such as IPAs, stouts, browns, sours and barley wine. They also offer mead. My favorite Bluewood beers are their stouts and browns, but they do all styles of their beers very well, which is not an easy feat! Bluewood is located in the historic Lemp stables and has one of the coolest St. Louis brewery locations! The inside of the building is beautiful! Take a walk around and appreciate the high ceilings, lighting, rich wood and exposed brick and nostalgic memorabilia. I was excited to go to this place given its historic building in a great old neighborhood. The bar set up is odd. There is a great outdoor area and great inside with plenty of seating for big groups but no waitresses (Perhaps it was because it was a Sunday). You have to go up to line at the bar to order food or drinks and then there is a pick up window for food. I've been to bars like this before but I thought this was going to be a nicer place. The bar was out of certain liquors so my wife couldn't get the first two drinks she attempted to order. The three different beers I had were nothing special as far as taste. This may be why they have a few fruit flavored beers to mask the taste. The food menu is also limited with only chicken type items wings, tenders, sandwiches, etc. When I went to the window to pick up our food, the guy working refused to speak and would only point to things. It's nice to not feel "old" when we go out. The beers were very tasty and I love the names. so... I've traveled to St Louis the last couple of years. I will start with I travel with my dogs. This is a great place with a nice environment for hanging out with the pups. We usually drop in on a walk in Benton Park (great area) for a beer or two. The beer is pretty good. A good selection for anyone. You'll find one you like. The outdoor area is indoors really. Big gates greet you to come in. There two TVs in the outer area. Big Brick building. There is an indoor area. Dogs not allowed but the bathrooms are in there too! So you have to have a buddy To go in and get beer and such. There's a beautiful bar area out there but not utilized. It's kind of boring out there because it's a great space but just not utilized. Bingo of some sort was indoors But nothing on the other side of the door. So...like I said if with dogs, really it's difficult to order or use the restroom. Not much going on out there even though it's a great space. I've gone when it's busier and met people from around the Midwest and elsewhere. It's a great space just wish they had more availability for ordering drinks and inclusion for activities. read more

Burger809 is now serving food inside and their food is delicious! My daughter and I both ordered the signature burger and strawberry lemonades. I got the cheese fries as my side. I have no idea what kind of cheese they used but it was way too good. My daughter ordered the macaroni and cheese, which she immediately ate. Next time I go back I want to try some sliders and their greens are available on Sundays. Everything is made fresh and cooked to order. Be patient and it will be well worth the wait! read more

We came here for a quick beer with a buddy, and didn't realize we had to have a reservation to sit. We hopped online and quickly got one for the next hour (which was in ten minutes) so it worked out perfect. Their care around COVID was awesome, as we had originally planned on another brewery that we weren't comfortable with going to when we pulled up, so we found this one instead. They have a whole patio area (inside but yet outside) with beautiful seating areas all socially distanced. All their workers wore masks, and you literally couldn't get within 6 feet of them. We felt SO safe here. If you're hungry, you can order from Mac's, but we had already eaten so we just enjoyed their beers. They have a ton of great options and every one I tried was awesome. If you're like us and have been terrified to go out during COVID, this is the perfect spot for you. They are going above and beyond for precautions.
