I was walking back to my hotel from a Drillers game and happened upon this bar. I saw arcade games from the sidewalk. Being a teen/young adult of the 80's, I pissed away many quarters and many an hour in video arcades. I ventured in. This was my first experience with a "barcade." Interesting, to be sure. Great beer selection. Many domestics, lots of crafts, something for everyone. They had $2 Coors Original on draft...so I was covered. The decor of the place made me chuckle...old tv's with 80's shows and commercials on a loop. Tons of 80's knick knacks on the walls: Devo, Pee Wee Herman, Terminator, ZZ Top...the list goes on. I've been to other retro-themed places, but the tackiness of this place made it a little better. I was there on a Thursday night, so it wasn't crowded. Service was either great or lousy, depending on which of the two bartenders was helping you. One guy sucked; he couldn't have been more "go to hell" if he tried. The other guy was great. I got to play "Defender" for an hour, but hell, now I had beer! What more can I say? I was transported back to my days of polo shirts, tight Levi's and Kaepa high tops with two sets of laces (on each shoe). Emerson wrote: "I covet truth; beauty is unripe childhood's cheat. I leave it behind with the games of youth." Well, I guess Emerson didn't have a Defender Jones and he wasn't being served icy cold Coors Original. Sorry, Ralph. I returned briefly on Friday, and it was a completely different vibe. Packed asshole to belly button, really loud, almost impossible to get a beer. The restroom was a mess. Still, it could be fun if you were in the right state of mind. Some sizzle chest was hogging the Defender, so I went with Tron. I waffled between 3 stars and 4. The Max is a great addition to the bar scene in Tulsa. From the owners and bar manager to the bartenders and bar backs, everyone here is friendly. They pour a great drink and have a unique selection of "retro drinks" made from the ingredients of our childhood (Yoohoo! anyone?). Pretty great selection of old school video games to choose from and you can't forget the awesomeness of skee ball. If you come in during happy hour you get free tokens to play the games and on Tuesdays they're all free. Pretty rad if you ask me. Wednesday nights they usually have retro trivia and have had a skee ball league one night of the week in the past. The thing that I find to be really cool about the bar is that all types of people are there. Anyone feels welcome. It's definitely my favorite bar in Tulsa. read more

I love The Max. I do. And I really want to give this place 5 stars, BUT eh, I can't. The good: Video Games. 80s Music. Beer. The trifecta of awesome. I live and die for skee-ball. I also love Burger Time more than any normal, functioning adult should. The bad: Games are often broken. Burger Time takes my token, but nothing happens.. token doesn't come back. Wah. We are trying to play skee-ball, but the place is too small. We are crowded in and can barely get any wind up on a throw. We are totally blocking anyone who would want to play the games directly behind us. Immediately outside the front door is a smoker's haven, so the front of the bar also reeks of smoke. The ugly: This place is just flat out gross. The floor is sticky, the games are sticky. There is a bench from some carnival ride that someone either spilled or puked in. It's also dark, but this could be an advantage so that you can't tell exactly how gross this place is. It's uneasy trying to be in here and between the loud music and dark lights, it's hard to really enjoy beating your friends at video games because you can't hear or see them (Yeah, I sound old, I'm not). I wish this was just a one-time thing, but this is the 4th time I've been here and the experience is never really that fun when it totally could be. They need a deep-cleaning and some re-organizing. And to get rid of the smoker's club hanging at the door. I'll come back here because it always seems like a good idea, but like usual, I'll probably have 2 beers, lose half my tokens to broken machines and then leave with my tail between my legs. read more

Ok so five stars might be a bit much but hey, the Max dares to be different. That's why I love it! It's the only bar around filled with old arcade games, what's not to like? I came here with some girlfriends who were trying to impress me with a cool spot in Tulsa, and they succeeded! I am quite impressed.. fun, colorful, adorable little bartenders that are midwestern-style sweethearts and cheapo drinks. I went on a Sunday evening so it was slow but , but the d-bag quotient was still a bit high.. and in case your wondering: I'm talking hillbilly sounding, tucked in polo shirt wearing cell phone holder on the belt style d-bag.. Not your NYC wall street greased back hair eurotrash style d-bag. I have no preference between the two, apples and oranges. read more

The Max Retropub is like if Howard the Duck got into a slap-boxing fight with Chuck Norris, and Chuck roundhouse kicked the 80's in the face... The Max would be the only thing left standing in the ashes of the post-apocalyptic retro-goodness, and of course the skeeball. All that to say, this place is pretty sweet and has slap bracelets. FRAUDS!!! On two occasions I visited this bar and paid my tab with my debit card. The first time they charged my card twice for the same amount which over drew my account. I thought, oh well accidents happen and settled things with my bank. 3 months later I visited this bar and again paid with my debit card again, the bar charged me the correct amount then 32 days after my last visit the bar charged my card for a different amount a second time! After checking with my friends and finding out the same thing had happened to them, I contacted my bank and the bank told me the latest charge was entered manually which means someone in the bar is probably collecting card information and charging it on their own. I had to cancel my debit card and wait 8 days for a new one to show up. I will never return to this bar! They are fraudulent and and unprofessional, but it doesn't seem to bother anyone who works there. Be warned, it could happen to you. read more

The Maxx is a fun chill place for a night out. 90's theme games, drinks and music. Lots of space and I rarely have been there when it is packed. Def not a club though so don't go with that in mind. Go to relax and chill out. read more

Fun bar in T-Town. 80s theme to the Max(Headroom?). They have a menu of 80s theme specialty drinks, that are always cloyingly sweet, yet somehow satisfying. Try the Magic Johnson or the Ninja Turtle. Both sour drinks with pixy stick around the rim. Looking for more excitement, the Richard Simmons has Pop Rock. POP ROCKS! Besides the drinks they also have regular beer service. Oh also, this place is a functioning arcade. $1=5 tokens and I think the majority of the games only costs 1. Freeplay Tuesday is also fun. The only really cons are: 1)Ski-ball doesn't give you tickets. Where's the fun in that. Ticket's should be had and should be allowed for trade ins like spider rings or maybe even a free drink? 2)Place can get crazy loud and crowded, especially on Saturdays and when they have a DJ/Band. read more

The Max is a cool place! I love the Blue Dome and this is just one of the many great places there. It's usually a younger crowd of twenty-somethings. The service is comparably quick and I like to get whatever is on special. It's often weird stuff, so sometimes I strike out - but at least it's cheap! What makes this place different is all of the old games and the retro theme throughout. They have old TVs playing (mostly) 80s music videos. There are probably several dozen old arcade games ranging from classics to basketball. Surprisingly, almost all are in service. Something else that is interesting is that the main room with the bar is (for all intents and purposes) standing room only; however, there is an adjacent room that's a little quieter with lots of room to sit and talk. This is a must-see when you're hitting up Blue Dome establishments. Go there late and then walk next door to Joe Momma's for a late night slice! read more

This bar deffiniately takes you back to the 80's-90's They also have this drink with poprocks candy!! unfortunately there is literally no alcohol in it. Oh my goodness, this place is so cool. I was in town for a work trip with co-workers and we had to come here when we realized what it was! It has such a cool vibe and is just a really fun place for a night out with friends. We played some Pacman and Skee-ball and I had a Ninja Turtle drink with a Pixie Stix rim. Yes, you read that right. There were also concoctions that included Pop Rocks on the rim. It was glorious. We also happened to come in on free token night so we played for free! Fun times. I only knock it down a star because a few machines we tried weren't working, but it was nothing major. I also feel like the themed drinks are mostly for the novelty...my drink tasted great, but didn't taste like it had much alcohol in it. Having said that, it was only $5, which is really not bad at all for a novelty drink... and it had Pixie Stix in it so I was happy. read more

The Max is so fun that it should be illegal! JK! No, seriously, found this place walking by with friends and the music really lured us in. If you grew up in the 80's and 90's this place is a perfect nostalgic trip to your favorite things, like video games ranging from Street Fighter (old school one) to Gallaga all the way to Skyball. Drinks are well priced, the bar has a series of old TVs all playing PeeWee at the same time and they have a giant head of Falkor the Luck Dragon hanging from the sealing. I WANT THAT IN MY HOUSE! The only reason why they don't get 5 stars is because half of their games were broken :( I can't wait to visit Tulsa again and go to the Max. read more

Well, I was expecting a little more out of this place. It was pretty grungy inside, and I was unimpressed with the games that they had in there. Many of the arcades had coins stuck in the coin slot so you couldn't play. Both bill changers were not in operation so you had to go to the bartender to get quarters. The pinball selection was the highlight of this trip, along with the drink prices. The bartender was really friendly, but the other customers in there were a little sketchy. We stayed for a few games of pinball and Street Fighter, but left after having a drink. If you want a dive bar with cheap drinks, this is your place. read more

I am largely unsure how to review this place because I had lots of fun there, and the theming is well done and the games are great, but the bottom line is that it's a bar and the drinks were just not that good! In the end, I will give it four stars because it was lots of fun and very well-themed and I probably should have just had beer or something. I did appreciate being able to drink a cherry slushie with booze made from what appeared to be a legit vintage Slush Puppie machine but it almost put me in a sugar coma and the cocktail I had after that tasted kind of like soap... but then I got to go play some Pac-Man (as well as a variety of other more unusual vintage games). It was crowded but the atmosphere was laid-back and largely friendly. AND SKEE-BALL! I would go back just for the skee-ball. read more

How did this place end up in Tulsa? This is the 1980s retro bar/ video arcade that was so perfectly predicted by the movie "Back To The Future 2". Right down to the giant Max Headroom mural on the wall. At first glance it looks awesome. The decor is fabulous, the authenticity is wonderful and the bartenders are all in on the joke. But their use of non-refundable tokens is kind of weak. Also, the night we were there there was a hardcore band playing 'music' that basically consisted of screaming obscenities and layering feedback. Definitely different. The 80s "barcade" straight out of Rocky 4. A fantastic concept: Get a bunch of old arcade games and build a full bar around them. I felt just like Fred Savage walking in and ordered a blue slush and two shots of Patron. The place is packed with 80s memorabilia. Everything you thought you forgot about is here. All the old tvs playing VHSs is a great touch too. The service has always been pretty good. Even when it's really busy I haven't had to wait too long for a drink. It's a full bar so you can get pretty much whatever you want. You might even be able to order pizza from Joe Mamma's next door. The game selection is pretty decent as well. A good mix of 80s and 90s classics as well as some pretty obscure cabinets. I've always had a good time here. Seems like it's always very cold in there. Great atmosphere,with a wide selection of beer and the brunch on the Weekends are great from open till close 7 different juices and a make-your-own bloody mary bar. From the all "all out in the open" feel and setup from when you walk in, to the bar, tables, and mugs or glasses you drink from to the open stage and garage doors,that do open, to the food that fills you up and leaves you full and continent. Terrible service. Kicked us out of the bar before 2am when we were in the middle of a game. I bought about $10 worth of tokens and did not get to use them because they basically pushed us out of the bar. They would not serve us more than two drinks because they did not want to "over serve" when clearly we were with about 6 people and buying drinks for everyone. Extremely rude and unprofessional. I will not be going back and would not suggest them as a fun bar to go in Tulsa. read more

We enjoy coming here time from time as they have retro arcade games, drinks, and it is kid free. The first time we came here was almost a year ago on a Wednesday on one of our first dates. It was pretty empty, but the bartender was pleasent and we had all the games to ourselves. The Last time we went, we brought our friends from out of town here before an Oilers game and we all had a good time. The place was more lively and with one bartender working, service was a little slow. Overall, a fun place to go to kill time, or to feel like a kid again without the kids and with some drinks. read more

The Max Retropub is the best bar downtown, period. Ever since it opened, it's just gotten better with age. Where else can you plop down, knock back something insanely colorful and tasty, while watching The Empire Strikes Back on a wall of vintage 1980s tube TV sets while surrounded by a walls of 80s/90s memorabilia? Hell, one of their walls is made up of vintage cassette tapes. There's other retro style bars around the country, but the Max was the original, and has the most character by far. Most importantly, THEY HAVE VINTAGE ARCADE GAMES GALORE! Some people have complained that the games break down a lot. Guess what? Some of those machines are 40 years old. Finding a working Pac-Man in the wild is a treasure in itself, and their tech busts his butt to keep those fantastic games working as much as possible. It's a labor of love, trust me. A little Super Mario Bros. with my beer? Yes, please. The drink selection is intentionally unconventional (ever tried a Ninja Turtle or a Sexual Chocolate? Do it now), and the staff is the best in town, period. They're fast, they're friendly (even on rough nights), and always glad to see you. There really isn't a better hangout in town. Some folks here have complained that it's not a "real" bar. Those people are dumb. Go back to your generic Irish pub and down a Guinness. The Max is easily the most fun place in Tulsa. read more

Sadly the machines haven't been taken care of and I spent half of my tokens on machines that ate my money. By far the best place I have ever been to in Tulsa, and in my Top 5 favorite bars EVER!!!! We were referred over here by a bartender next door and the place did not disappoint! So many awesome and nostalgic arcade games! we had a blast playing all of them. The retro TV's were an awesome touch. And any place with ski ball wins my heart every time. Mitch, the bartender, was super welcoming and made sure we had a great time. Awesome drinks, killer atmosphere, and great service. A nice place, however some of the machines were busted. They have a $10 minimum on cards that I wasn't aware of. When I explained that I wasn't made aware of this and simply wanted to pay for my 1 drink ($6.00) the bartender said that he would still charge me $10. Finally the issue was resolved and yet there is still a pending charge for $10 on my account. I liked the place the first time we visited and even told people about it back home. Unfortunately lightning doesn't strike twice. Sad to say I won't be going back or recommending the place due to one bartender and his poor attitude. read more
