The Main is a great family restaraunt. Simple and unpretentious with good food, decent prices and friendly staff. Right now there is a huge staff shortage in Vancouver but despite that, the Main still had great service. Pizzas are solid and the Greek food is on par with any Greek restaraunt. This place is zero hip so the only ironic moustaches or skinny jeans will be on the new mom's and dad's who are still in denial about their parenthood. read more

Don't go to brunch here if you are hungover. The smell from the previous night party crowd was consuming the room. Food was fine but nothing to write home about. read more

I have been coming to the Main for years since it first opened in 2001 or thereabouts. For value this place is amazing especially now that the new owner has implemented $10 dinner specials nightly. You simply cannot get fed this well at any other place in this city. The only special I caution against is the vindaloo special. Also the special of the night will come with slightly different sides than the same dish off the standard menu, with the exception of Monday night's pizzas which for $10 is incredible. Otherwise you will NEVER regret ordering the roast lamb... as it is the signature dish and the stock and trade of this fine neighbourhood establishment and its founding family, who have since sold to the new (still Greek) owner. Their lamb recipe is literally a trade secret and you only need to try a bite of your friend's to know why. As for consistency the size of the lamb portion can vary from immense to modest. The quality of most dishes (with the exception of the nachos and the vindaloo specials) is excellent but also consistent. Not many restaurants can hit it this consistently. I also really like the casual but strangely good-for-any-occasion ambience. There is no annoying hackneyed Greek stereotypes or blindingly blue and white murals. The place is as good for a drink at the large front bar as it is for a family dinner with grandparents or a date. There is live music some nights but if not in the mood the back room provides some quiet for eating and conversation. Also I have booked many a birthday group here so it is great for that sort of thing too. Lastly I tip my hat to the service staff who, I can say from almost ten years or so of witness experience, are some of the most down to earth and truly helpful sorts I have ever had. These aren't make up dolls starved for personality like many other places, but genuine people who make you feel like you are really in a good community restaurant. Some people recommend the brunch here although it is really mostly a good value dinner joint. read more

If you don't feature any dinner specials, erase the "Food featuring" from your board. Having it simply sets your customers up for a disappointments. I honestly think ownership has chnaged... I'm not sure if it's better in terms of food quality or menu choices. It's too bad that I haven't come back until now. This would be my last time. (The house white was good.) read more

STAY AWAY !!!! We found The Main Restaurant on the Just Eat website. They had decent prices and a wide selection. We should have however, read the reviews online before we made the idea to attempt to order from them. As the Just Eat website wasn't working, we decided to call the restaurant and ask whether or not they could do anything. 1. Our first few calls were completely ignored. We had friends at the restaurant at the time, and they said it wasn't too busy to answer the phone, although they also complained of extremely long wait times and rude staff members. 2. When someone finally did answer the phone, a young girl, she sounded very bothered to be answering her work's phone and talking to a customer. She was cold, and rude to us. We simply asked "Hi there, Do you do delivery?" She replied with "Yes, we actually do, but you have to order through the Just Eat website." When we explained to her that our payment kept on getting rejected (it was working with all other Just Eat restaurants listed...), and if we could just order delivery, she quickly interrupted and very rudely yelled into the phone "Uhhh, we DON'T do delivery. BYE." And hung up the phone on us as we tried to inquire. Note, we were completely respectful this entire time. When we did finally get the Just Eat order to go through to the restaurant (it took forever..) Our order was rejected by the restaurant (never had this happen before), reason was that it was "too busy in the restaurant". Again, our friends were in there at the time, and had stated that it was almost empty. All in all, horrible customer service, and now after reading these horrible reviews on this place, I will NEVER be giving them my business and I will be directing everyone I know to eat elsewhere. Shame on you guys! Learn how to run a business. read more

I came here one Saturday evening. I found the server to be rude, miserable and uninterested. My food arrived luke warm at best but wasn't too bad, until... I found the dreaded hair! Hair in food freaks me out at the best of times, never mind when it looks like a pubic one. Whether it was or wasn't I can't prove either way, all I know is it was thick, black and curly! I gagged and made my way to the toilet. Now, credit where it's due, I didn't have to pay for my meal of pube. But, there was no apology from the server or even the offer of a drink on them. I understand that these things can happen, you know, cooks are in the kitchen all day around hot surfaces, alas... crotches get itchy. Come on, seriously though, don't make out that i'm inconveniencing you. Anyway, 3 stars and not 1 because regardless of the bad food (-1 star) and poor service (-1 star), this is a pretty decent drinkery with live music. Just don't eat here! read more

I have been going to the main for a few years now, they have some good $10 specials like Pizza Wednesday and Butter Chicken. I sometimes order a Slovakia or once in a blue moon the Lamb Shoulder. They carry Storm IPA so if you like IPA that's my favorite. Its perfect for a beer and bite to eat, some of their other items are expensive, but I stick to specials, beer, and sometimes the roast chicken its about $16 but its a whole half of a real chicken roasted, not some frozen crap. Potatoes are good with lemon. They play hockey games on TV and sometimes have live music. The side of the place opens to the street so it can have a patio like feel with lots of natural light, which is nice. It's basic but if you play your hand right, you can win here. Oh and don't order wine, its terrible - stick to beer and highballs. read more

Today is Mother's Day and I didn't feel like going to a busy restaurant so we decided to try The Main. It was close to home and no lineup. Although there were tables in the front we were told that they were reserved and we had to be seated in the back. Not a big deal I thought. But it felt as we were sent to the dungeon with other families with kids. The service was also terrible. My husband asked for more mustard for his burger and it never came, my kids were super thirsty and their cups were empty. The waitress wasn't around to check on us in the dungeon and our glasses never got refilled the entire evening. The food wasn't great either. I had the chicken souvlaki and it was dry. The burger wasn't very tasty and needed more flavour, the nachos were greasy. We were super disappointed and will not be going back. read more

I'm guessing people stop in for the beer, because it certainly isn't for the food. Overpriced and poor quality. A shared appy, two mains and a bottle of Pellegrino plus tip cost us $50. Calamari was overcooked and overbreaded, tzaziki was bland. Got a hassle from the server when I asked to take the onions out of my pita wrap and add cukes instead, which I think they put in instead of the lamb that should have been there. Husband's penne was too dente and a bit lackluster. We won't be back. read more

I was planning on having dinner there but I went into the washrooms first...a filthy disgusting cesspool. I immediately left. If their washrooms are any indication of their cleanliness......I think not. BTW..it was not the graffiti....it was FILTH ...and neglect. Staff should be monitoring the washroom on a regular basis. Don't blame the patrons for their graffiti...take responsibility that you don't clean it; PERIOD. read more

Oh noooo! My favourite ever Main St. brunch (The Main's huevos rancheros) have gone up in price by $3 or $4. I happily admit that the value on them before was almost too-good-to-be-true (they used to be around $8 or $9). I guess they must've been losing money on them. The new price probably reflects the meal value better...but it's a big enough increase that we may have to find a new "on-a-whim" brunch place and just come here for special occasions when we REALLY want huevos rancheros. Or maybe we'll have to have a piece of toast at home and split an order :) read more

Wow, can't believe no-one has reviewed The Main on Main (greek food, pizza etc.)........It really deserves a 3.5 rating. However, on Mondays it gets a 4 when you get a pizza for $10.95 and a pitcher of beer for $10........a reason to get out on a Monday night - who can beat that? Pizza is above average so you will not be disappointed. Otherwise if you are craving greek food at a reasonable price - it can do the trick. Nice cozy atmosphere - pub feel with candles- for low-key no fuss meal........some waitresses are a little bizarro adding a commercial drive vibe......but they can be tolerated after a couple pints ; ) They have live music on weekends and patio in the summer to make it hip. A safe bet when you are in flip-flop mode in the summer or looking for a cozy hideout from the rain in the winter!! read more

Good food for a great price! I went here for dinner with my parents last night. It turned out to be cheap pasta night ($10 a plate). They didn't have any vegetarian pasta dishes but they happily accommodated me. This tells me the pasta sauces aren't pre-made. Cheap beer ($4) before 5pm as well! Excellent service too. read more

I have been to The Main on Main many times... Great place for drinks as they are reasonably priced although they do seem to have gone up in price lately. The real reason why I gave such a low rating is the food... I have tried a lot of the food from their fairly uneventful menu and I have never been satisfied. It's rather bland, heavy with olive oil and way over priced for what you get. The seem to have even stopped giving out the basket of bread before you eat which is a shame because it was actually quite good. so the roundup They have live music but any time I was there it was always way too loud. Drinks are reasonable with a fairly ok selection. Food is a big disappointment... word of advice: eat somewhere else. Staff can be attentive but not consistently so. read more

Horrible customer service. A simple pop refill took 10 minutes. Our server never came to check on us, we had to call her multiple times just to order. read more

went last night for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. The negative reviews here confuse me... it's not fine dining or a place to have a wedding rehearsal dinner. But if you want great variety, good food and decent prices, The Main is perfect. Something on the menu for everyone & lots of beers and drinks to chose from. Staff was perfect! Will be back with the kids when they have pizza specials. Bottom line, if you looking for an unpretentious place with decent prices (something Vancouver is seriously lacking) check it out. For what it is, it's good. read more

We moved to the Hood in early 2011. Just such a easy place to go for dinner after work, we love the specials (food and drink) . We ordered the mussels once and they we really dry, we told the waitress... she just took them away and we got new ones in a jiffy ...they were great. The staff here is great... not the cookie cutter stuff from Earls and Cactus club (yes the staff at these places are good... but really they all look the same). read more

Went here for lunch with my mother and grandmother and we were all super disappointed. We had some pita bread, which was good, but the calamari which we were all so looking forward to was almost inedible. It was mostly batter and terribly greasy & overcooked, and served with lumpy tsatziki sauce. I also had a lamb dish and found it to be a mix of overly dry with large fatty pieces that I couldn't chew. I refused the offer to have it bagged up to take away with me, which is something I never do. Our waiter was great and the service was prompt, but not enough to make us return. They really need to work on their food quality here. read more

Happy to say that the night out we had there left me with my belly full and it was so nice to eat greek food without blaring bouzouki music and acropolis figurines. This atmosphere is very cool, laid back, very MAIN street, with the most authentic greek food around town. Word has it that the owner's mother from greece comes in and gives the kitchen lessons on her recipes, I was there to have the gemista one Friday and it was AMAZING Good wine list too....no retsina, we had a couple of bottles of Malbec and good price too Would go on a weekend, great music! read more

I've been here a few times and the food is a-ok. Nothing to write home about but definitely nothing to complain about either. There's lots of options on the menu (mostly Mediterranean inspired fare) and surely even the pickiest of eaters can find something to order. Decent selection of beer and cocktails. Be aware the kitchen closes an hour or two before the restaurant closes so if you want late night eats you're out of luck. I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone, but I also wouldn't hesitate to visit again. read more

I have found my dream restaurant in Main that always satisfies cravings for a quick and meals are also desirable. When I ordered garlic Prawns, it tasted so yummy that sauteed with olive oil, butter & garlic. It is extremely good to move right here for the beverage. read more

This 4 star review is based on the Carbonara I ate. I've had Carbonara in a tiny family Italian restaurant in Germany, (I know what this looks like - but the cooks were authentic Italian immigrants.) and I personally prefer carbonara at The Main Restaurant more. The reason being that the sauce wasn't as greasy and I like how the egg is still a bit runny so there's always a bit extra sauce left to flavour the the pasta. The ambiance is your average sports bar and our waitress was soso in terms of service. read more

Love this place, went here for the first time for a quick beer a few yearsago and keep going back. The staff is great and not too "in your face" the food is really good, their saganaki is aaaamazing! I never eat lamb except for when im here because it is so good. read more

I came in looking for pie and the hostess said they had 2 so I went in. The dessert menu had 3 items and none of them were pie. The berry crumble was the closest thing but they were sold out. The server said the bougatsa is even better so I gave it a try. I was so disappointed. The outer layer was too heavy and sweet and the middle was flavourless. Between two people, we hardly finished it. I just wish they didn't tell me they had pie, but they girls were very nice. read more

We have been going here alot since we moved to the Hood 5 years ago. It has been going down hill, the species are still great on Monday (pizza) and Wednesday (pasta). But some items like a California Caesar salad is getting smaller and shrip is often burnt. Service is also getting sceatchy... Robin is amazing the blond guy is pretty good too... But it just feels like there is a lack of experience... Time to step up Main. read more

New ownership has turned up the volume here at The Main restaurant and Bar, the menu is fresh and totally Greek., the owner: "Taz" comes from a traditional Greek family and has hit the sweet spot here. The restaurant is split into to rooms, table sitting and the other is a traditional style bar and booths on the other side. Nice screen for game watching, and good local vibe. read more

Live music on Saturday night makes for some good times, but the all Greek all the time menu is a little out of place. Still, it was nice place to stop in at the end of a crazy Saturday. It would be nice if the menu had some non-Greek options - seriously, I was expecting (and craving) the usual pub fare and instead had to learn what the heck Skordalia is (it's a garlic/potato dip served ice cold). read more

I've only been here for drinks and brunch, and both are very good. Their Java Cream martini is A+, and I really love their veggie eggs benedict. Others seem to be complaining of the service here, but I haven't yet had a problem with it. The waitresses I've had here have been nice and personable. Will make this my regular spot whenever I'm in Vancouver. read more

We had the pizzas that were on special that day (a Monday night) and they were both good .They were out of the beer that we were looking for. Prices were a bit high if it were not for the daily specials. Service was good. read more

3 different waitresses in one night. Asked for water twice and they forgot twice. Food was boring, not even a bit of seasoning and by seasoning, i mean pepper and table salt, cmon making me cry. Rice, bland. Potatoes, bland. Poutine, where's the curds? I should have just ordered fries and poured gravy on it myself. Hate to say it, salad might have been the best thing. It was gone before everything else. Recap, piss poor service and flavourless food. Pricey too. Try harder. read more

These two stars are only for the food - which is really quite excellent. It's a bit pricey, but really delicious, and we love Greek food so it's a shame we can't go here more often. However. Every time we've been here, the servers has been slow, casual, cold or downright rude. Both times we've had great dinners, but the experience with the staff has left myself and my partner thinking we will probably never go back. The first time could have been chance, but the second was just disappointing. I really wanted to like the Main, but the staff seems like they couldn't care less about their customers. read more

The Main was one of my favourite casual places to go, the food was always fantastic, never a let down, lately though they've taken some favorites off the menu, no big deal, but more so the quality of the food isn't the same as it used to be, the last few visits the potatoes have been really dry, they taste like they're trying to revive day-old cooked potatoes. The cleanliness of the place seems to have changed as well, I definitely would suggest they wash the place, floors, walls, tables and all, and to keep it up. Although the food is still good and I would still recommend going, I wish the quality would go back to what it was before. The last couple of times my friends ordered the steak it came black charred on the outside, same with the chicken in the chicken sandwich, so if you don't want charred burnt meat tell them before hand. read more

I'm generally confused by the Main. We live near here so it's an easy Friday night place to get a seat at, reasonable food, good service. The menu however is highly confused, their attempt to appeal to way too many people is likely why their food is not great quality. Or maybe the live music and attempt to make it into more of a bar than a restaurant - again, it has a confused identity. That said, I love their lamb, and the greek food is reasonably well done for the price but don't expect authentic greek. The saganaki appy is also a personal favourite. Stay away from the over-battered chewy calamari, and the mussels are bland. I've never had the pizzas so can't comment on them. The wine list could use some improvement, but it's reasonably price and a few good local options so I'm not too fussy. The beer taps are great and have a good selection. All that said, we come back often as we can get a seat without a reservation and the patio is a great addition to add more outdoor seats to Main st - gets it back up to 3 stars. read more

There are times when not having an extensive menu is a good thing; there is a lot of love put into each dish. This was not the case here unfortunately. I ended up ordering the burger (which I seldom due at restaurants). It was essentially a fast food burger with a nicer bun, but wasn't as substantial. I left still hungry. Two of my friends had the souvlaki, while another had the butter chicken. The consensus was that the souvlaki was similar to a lower end fast food joint, while the butter chicken was 'not bad'. The cocktails and ambience were good, while the waiting staff were merely serviceable. Not a bad experience, but it is a wonder that the main continues to operate with so many better restaurants on Main Street. The Main got a rating of 'Meh' from all involved. . Good beer selection, good prices. The food can be great but is sometimes only mediocre...never terrible. Good service (with exceptions!), down to earth what you see is what you get sort of place. I go there often because it is simple, has a good selection, is well priced, and easy. If you are looking for a special romantic dinner, spend more money and go somewhere else. If you are looking for an easy and good pizza, salad and beer, by all means!!! (oh and lambchops!!) read more

The main used to be one of my favs. But no longer. The service was terrible and the food ( which used to be great) is now bla, uninspired, and overpriced ! I live a few blocks down from The Main and have been there before and found it all right. Our favourite haunt on Main Street was closed for renovations, so on August 8 around 10:30pm we decided to have a late-night drink at The Main instead. The past few times I have been there I have ordered food and it was mediocre. I figured we were just going for drinks so it wouldn't be a problem. We arrived at The Main and waited for a minute or two but weren't acknowledged by either the two servers or the bartender so we seated ourselves. The place was about half full. I didn't notice the "Please Wait to Be Seated" sign until my boyfriend pointed it out to me once we had seated ourselves but figured it was all right. We sat at a table facing the bar and were not greeted by either server for 10 minutes. The bartender was chatting to another gentleman almost the entire time we sat there, and we were not acknowledged by either of them. It seemed like the servers were avoiding eye contact with us; I made eye contact with them a few times to no avail. One server even delivered food to the table right beside us and did not acknowledge us in any way. We left after 10 minutes, and I made direct eye contact with a server on my way out--still no acknowledgement or greeting. The Main lost a great opportunity to convert us to occasional customers, as Locus (down the street) was closed. This place has atrocious service and I will never return again. If they did not serve us because we seated ourselves, that is incredibly petty and ridiculous. There are a lot of other places on Main Street that are absolutely amazing and have great food, staff and drinks, especially Locus and Chaise. read more
