I recently was married and for an informal rehearsal dinner spot, my Maid-of-Honor chose The Main. About a week before my fiance, good friend and I decided to go for brunch to check it out, since I'd never been. First off, it wasn't very busy, and I noticed 3 servers on shift. This didn't stop them from bringing my fiances drink (a mimosa, the drink special for their Sunday brunch) an hour after it had been ordered. The server said she gave her a bigger drink because it took so long. The drink didn't look much bigger than it ought to have been and my fiance didn't particularly want a large drink. My friend ordered a coffee, which was never refilled the entire time we were there which was nearly 2 hours. Thank goodness I only ordered water! The food itself came and hour and a half after we arrived. When we got it, it was cool and congealed. Not very appetizing. We ate about half even though we were very hungry and the food was fairly tasty. We still left with a bad taste in our mouths. Despite that we still carried on with our reservation the following week. I figured it might have been just a really bad day. Wrong. It was just as bad in the private room except this time, most of the food itself was abysmal. At least the server gave us a complimentary bottle of wine after the 5th plate of food was sent back. I think 2 people out of our group of a dozen thought the food was any good. Never, will I ever go to The Main again. Period. read more

So my girlfriends and I went out for a night on the town for a going-away get-together for a friend. We were staying at a house a couple blocks down from Main & King Ed, but the flatbread place and a couple other restaurants were already full as it was a friday night. We were starving, so we settled on The Main. From the get go, I should've known we were in for a crappy experience. Five of us girls stood at the entrance, waiting for someone to seat us. Three different servers walked past us, staring at us, no smiles, no hello, no approach. Finally we got the attention of one of the girls and requested a table. After the food came, our server didn't bother to come check on us again, so I had to get up and walk to the bar to get more drinks. The food wasn't all bad.. The calamari was pretty good, not overcooked or chewy, and it came with a decent tzatziki sauce. The potatoes were decent too, really nice and lemony, but the rice was mushy and bland. At the end of the night as I attempted to pay my bill, the server did something so offensive I could hardly believe it. As I was entering her tip on the debit machine, the 15% option was less than I had intended to give, as I myself am a server too. When I went to cancel it and re-enter the transaction, the server leaned over and yanked the machine out of my hands, without saying anything to me, literally YANKED it out of my hands. I was in shock and just sat there with my hands still in the same position in the air, and said, "wow that was rude." the server ignored me and thus got a 12% tip instead. I've lived in the hood for years and walked by on many occasions. It's impossible to tell the hours because they seem to be closed at really odd times- like Saturday afternoon. Finally found it open one afternoon and had a beer. Atmosphere was fine. Beer was wet Next time went with the wife for dinner and both meals were just bad. Service was fine but to food was bad Net net. If it's open and you're thirsty go in. If you're hungry and it's open keep walking. WOW! There are some outrageous reviews on this place eh? All over the map. One person was peeved because the staff wouldn't let her change the lighting in the restaurant so her kids could colour? Do you want to change the music and bring in your own server too? Hahaha, go back to your castle. Here we go. LOVE the pasta dishes here. My friend and I eat here very often. Vegan and veggie style. It's easy. The pasta is consistently delicious. A server/manager?, Sarah is our favourite worker bee. Friendly, professional and adds to our great experience. We enjoy the atmosphere, the dim lighting(as we don't bring children with us to colour). We did have a bad experience once, due to a lousy server/bartender. Not sure of the fellow's name, but he was rude, s_l_o_w, brought food out of order, and took forever on drinks. We haven't seen him again. Brunch at The Main! Only a few blocks past King Edward, after Main St.'s pretense falls off, this namesake eatery picks up as a savory spot to look cool at. Laid back and rustic inside, Main's menu has everything you'd expect from a quality brunch spot. I ordered The Standard with a side of avocado, it was like an old friend blowing back into town. Imagine this friend you'd tired of is now better tasting and thoughtfully prepared, with perfectly cooked counterparts like herbed potatoes and free-range eggs. But do add an extra, bacon for example, as sticking to your old guns will cause this familiar friend to misfire. read more

I like me a happy waitress... honestly it can totally make or break any restaurant experience, it doesn't matter how good or bad the food is if your waitress is a bitch you won't have a good time. Luckily that was not the case here! My bf and I stumbled in here one Sunday evening after a long weekend of this, that and the other... we were tired, very hungry and needed a swiftly served drink to calm our nerves. The gal who helped us was simply adorable: tall, short hair, funky little outfit... she fit right in. She was very nice and went over the menu with us telling us this was good today, not to order something she didn't like, what beers were on tap, and which was her favorite hard cider. She could have served me dead monkey on an old shoe and I probably would have been happy with it but she didn't (thankfully) she got us our sagnaki and souvlaki which were both FABULOUS! The tzatziki was amazing and very garlicy, the pita perfectly cooked to warm goodness, the lamb souvlaki was tender and not over done !!!yay!!!, the sagnaki was amazing fried feta served with lemon and pita... pretty much a little bit of heaven on a plate. The decor of this place reminds me of Capitol Hill bars in Seattle, dark, low lighting, a couple of tv's, funky modern fitted places with retro style. Cute overall, I was pretty comfy here. I mentioned to our cutey-pie waitress that I liked the mints and that I wondered if she could give me a few extras for the road and she dumped a pile on the table happily. We like coming to this restaurant on Friday nights (before their live music starts), when we're tired and hungry and don't feel like walking more than a few minutes for a good meal, sweet service, and the occasional beer. My husband appreciates the television on game-night as well, and I appreciate that the TV is not huge and in-my-face. Nothing fancy, totally comforting. We usually have pasta dishes or the souvlaki. Portions are reasonable (pasta) or generous (greek dishes), and the food is usually tasty. Recently however I've noted that my seafood linguine's mussels and prawns have been a bit sandy, and the feta appetizer now has more tasteless tomatoes and less tasty feta. Service - usually excellent - has been a bit haphazard since the end of summer, too. I hope they sort themselves out sooner than later, but we'll probably keep going anyway. read more

My fiance is from Ontario and had heard good things about the Main. We were making our way to a party in the West end and decided that we didn't want to be the first to arrive at the part and should grab a bite and a drink. When we came into the main it seemed cozy enough - then the smell hit me. It was like the floor of a barn that had not been swept. My fiance commented on displeased facial expressions our wiatress had when I opted not to have a second drink (driving) and asked to have my water topped up. She ordered spankopita. it was definitely a frozen product reheated whether made originally in-house or not. I had the Margherita Pizza which was a normal pizza with regular processed mozzarella, a few chiffonade pieces of basil and each slice had about a 1/16th of an inch thick slice of mozza melted on. Dissappointing to sat the least. Food leaves much to be desired, service, meh. Atmosphere - have your floors stripped stained and sealed! The smell is disgusting. read more

My husband and I went out for a rare lunch date sans kids. (Well actually the newborn came along. You get the picture.). We thought we'd try it as Portland Craft was closed and we live in the neighborhood and like to support local businesses. I had no idea that the menu is mostly Greek so I was looking forward to some good calamari and Greek salad. Kind of no brainer plates to prepare, right? Wrong. Bland, chewy, overly battered grainy calamari. Oily, bland salad with cheap olives. All I kept thinking was 'where's Gordon Ramsay and his Kitchen Nightmares show?' My husband's souvlaki was meh.... I didn't have the heart to tell him how bad mine was. My advice is skip this place and head to the Reef or do what we should've done and waited until Portland Craft opens. read more

Part of the reason we came in here was because we were on the hunt for late(ish)-night dessert and it was one of the only places still open and serving food. I didn't know anything about it other than it has live music (which was a little too loud for easy conversation but otherwise quite good) and was surprised when I discovered that, lo and behold, this is a Greek restaurant! They only have two dessert items but both were quite good (I may have sampled from my friends' dishes). I found the baklava to have too much citrus for my taste though it was still tasty and the custard-y dish was delish. In terms of real food, I found myself ordering an appy size chicken skewer and the trio of dips. Both were excellent! All the dips were super tasty (even the one that made us skeptical made from roe - not fishy at all!) and their pita bread was light and delicious. I'm not really a super huge Greek food fan but I'd come back here just for the hummus. And I appreciated that our server asked us if we were coming to watch the band or not so that she could seat us accordingly. That was cool. read more

I was surprised to read so many bad reviews of this place. I had a really nice time here on Friday night. Was with a work colleague and both of us wanted a pint and some food after work so we drove up around Main Street and I had seen this place before and thought we would give it a try. When we went in the girl came over and said they only had seats at the bar. That was totally fine, we both enjoy sitting at the bar so we went up and had a seat! The bar man was fab. Genuinely interested in the craft beers they had on tap and gave us the background stories of a few and some samples before we decided what to go for. Crannóg was one that I immediately took notice of. A Gaelic word for a straw hut from Ireland's Celt history This little company made potato ale and stout from the water they had in their well. AMAZING. This sh1t was unreal. I tried a pint of both and it was totally like the shiz, for reals! We ordered poutine and calamari to share. Both very nice and large portions for appetizers. There was a nice folky type band on too which was nice. Not too loud so you could still have a conversation. I will most definitely be back! I can't really comment on the menu because I only came in for dessert and a coffee. It's Greek, which I'm not a fan of, and the prices seemed pretty reasonable. I ordered a baklava, which was dripping with citrus infused honey, and massive. It was exactly what I was craving, and I enjoyed it very much. The cinnamon stick garnish was a wonderful stirrer for my coffee, too. There was a live band, which I'm not a big fan of in a small venue because bands are never aware of or don't care about how loud they are. Plus, I wanted to have conversations with people at my table, which was tough; although indirectly because of the live music, I stumbled upon a band called "Alestorm' who are best described as "Pirate Metal". Full-on yarr shiver me timbers stuff. The singer plays the keytar. No foolin'. Service was good, and the girl helping us out was really friendly. If you like Greek, check this place out. read more

Went here with my parents so they could check out an eatery in my new neighbourhood. Sat at the bar since it was going to be a 30 minute wait for a table, I actually prefer the bar so it was no problem. Except until the bartender took 10 minutes to take our initial drink order (even though he did say hello and drop menus right away) and then once my drink was empty I waited 12 minutes for him to notice (even after he quality checked my parents meals) but he didn't so I just had to ask, and quickly since he was more concerned about organizing his bottles behind the bar then serving the total of 6 patrons at his counter. I ordered the Carbonara pasta, it was very bland, not good. My parents ordered calamari, spanakopita and a Greek salad, it was ok, but about as good as delivery Greek. The menu is all over the map, Indian, Greek, Italian, Canadian, obviously too much so because the food is bland and boring. The pros are that The Main offers a family friendly selection of appetizers and entrees. The menu is priced reasonably (given the prime location), with appropriate portions and decent selection of beers, pizzas, and seafood / meat / pastas. The cons are that The Main is in dire need of a renovation. The tables are worn, dented and sticky, and the benches along the perimeter of the restaurant are torn, with food, debris and other particulates in between the sections. Both hubby and I agreed that our choices (calamari, Greek dips, Greek salad, and mussels) were acceptable, but they wouldn't necessarily bring us back. The waitress was trying her hardest to provide service, but she was covering the whole restaurant, with periodical help from two other ladies that were expediting food only. This is a great place for a meal and a beer with friends, family, even kids. The atmosphere is relaxed, homey and well kept. Unpretentious in atmosphere, the comfort-Greek food and selection of micro-brewery beers makes for a quality experience. Live music mon many nights of the week is also a plus. read more

Had dinner last night (Friday) when the place we wanted to go (Mui Garden) across the street had just closed for the night. This place was pretty quiet on a Friday night. After getting our food, we realized why. I just wanted a burger. It was cooked to the point of being dry, the condiments were blah and the whole thing just didn't have any flavour, texture or anything worth praising. My wife had the Calamari platter which was overbattered, overcooked and just plain tasted lousy. The service was so-so. Our waitress basically did the minimum required to not get scowled at. The Main is one of those places that I really want to love, but my honest opinion is...meh. It's casual. It's comfortable. It's easy to meet up with lots of friends. What really needs to be improved is the food. It's cliche and there are very few healthy options. If you order the "Greek Salad" it comes loaded with fleshy pink tomatoes, too many onions and dreaded green peppers everywhere. Can't they freshen things up a little bit? Will we continue going there? Yes. Will we go there because of the food? No. We go because of the comfort, the music and the location. If it didn't have those things, we wouldn't go back. Came here a couple of times and the service was great. This most recent time service was atrocious. They had a party in the back and seemed to do their best to ignore all their bar customers. I'm not sure if the person tending the bar had made drinks before. I can appreciate them being busy but the complete lack of acknowledgement that I was a guest and worthy of service made this experience frustrating for myself & others. Embarrassing! read more

Music was good, waitress was nice, a bit pricey ($15 for a burger) but I'm writing because the 4 of us looked at the menu online beforehand and picked out what we wanted. When we ordered we were told the online menu was old and didn't offer 2 of the 4 dishes we wanted to eat. Argh! So 2 people in our group were unhappy. We've been going for over 15 years and every time we go (about every few months) it's a bit less nice/good/delicious than the last time. But a bit more expensive than the last time too. read more

We are from US and invited Surrey guests, and wanted an unfamiliar local eatery so they could also experience a different neighborhood . Server was stellar, interesting enough cocktail list-- Pimms Cup with Gin and Ginger, some house infused fig vodka, always a bonus in Canada where every bar has the same fruity Smirnoff infused shelf staples, even a variety of scotches on a separate menu featuring an unfamiliar Campbelland, smoky and peaty and for me highly rated; another treasure outside of the norm high/low offerings, and good variety on tap to satisfy you craft drinkers :) Overall the bar was 4-star for the joint's size and ample offerings. Score some Sheridan, Oregon Ransom Old Tom malted barley Gin and it would really stir up the neighborhood. For those that actually want to eat...yeah so, 4 lamb chops per entrée?! score! large half cut taters yum, heaps of more starch, yes rice and a feta/cuke/tom salad $18 not bad y'all! A large rectangular croissant sized Spanokopita was actually very good as were the grape leaves $6-8 and (beef) moussaka was excellent though would of preferred lamb, it was a great rendition and points for presentation, served In a small dbl handled steel pan, almost like a mini paella dish. Lavazza expresso and hand made desserts, this chef/bartender/joint definitely deserves a little more Yelp love. There is a butter chicken dish which I would happily try next time as I hear the chef is of Indian descent but definitely holds their own through the Mediterranean which is the focus of The Main. Sunday pm, no music which may have been a plus re: noise level reviews, but I coulda rocked it out. Give The Main a chance, I'm hoping it continues to rise above the lower Yelp ranks. read more

Went here for brunch the other day. I had the smoked salmon benny with roasted hashbrowns and a garden salad. Me being weird, I always eat each component separately. I started with the salad which had a very delicious dressing. The hashbrowns were seasoned nicely. The benny was perfectly cooked and the salmon really oozed with flavour. The service was stellar and the prices were very affordable. Definitely recommend this place for brunch. Will have to come back and try out their dinner menu. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE. We had our staff xmas party here last week and it was a terrible dining experience. We submitted our food orders beforehand, however when I got there I was told the item was unavailable. As a result I ordered the roast lamb and it was disgusting. It was boiled and had a very unappealing sour smell. Here are some other notable highlights at our table: - Hair in one of our co-workers chicken slouvaki dish - 1 hour and half for the server to get us our drinks/ no water as bar was backed up - Were informed prior that first drink was FREE however server charged us - 30 mins to get complimentary wine for table - Servers seemed irritated, and unfriendly - The restaurant was not that busy to warrant such bad service Bad food. We just came for drinks as we were waiting on a table at Grub. They have Crannog Red Ale! I was wondering what places I could find Crannog beer. They also have a great outdoor seating area that's nice when it's sunny outside. The only problem with that is that they don't pay much attention to the outside patrons in the evenings... On an evening when we had time to kill, my girlfriend and I came to this restaurant to enjoy the nice summer weather. I ordered the penne chorizo which was decent; sausage had no special kick to its flavour and the pasta sauce was totally fine, but not special. And service when sitting outside was slow. While my girlfriend and I were in no rush, we eventually tired of waiting so much that I proactively went inside to find our server to get our bill. So if you are not willing to sit lazily during and after dinner, do not sit outside. read more

I've walked by here a few times, however, finally came in after much deliberation and debate with my best friend. The layout is very awkward. I felt bad for the waitress who had to skot behind other tables in frustration. This place gets busy, however, that didn't compromise the service. The service was decent. Prices were mid range. Food was okay, nothing to write home about. It is your standard pub food. I had nachos and they gave a generous serving off all the side dips. The Main is a great family restaraunt. Simple and unpretentious with good food, decent prices and friendly staff. Right now there is a huge staff shortage in Vancouver but despite that, the Main still had great service. Pizzas are solid and the Greek food is on par with any Greek restaraunt. This place is zero hip so the only ironic moustaches or skinny jeans will be on the new mom's and dad's who are still in denial about their parenthood. read more

Tried the Lamb Greek'N Big Platter - was quite tasty. The lamb was absolutely wonderful. Greek salad was fresh and pretty standard. Potatoes tasted great even if a little dry, the drippings at the bottom of the pan easily solved this. Was a late night snack shared between 2 of us and we were pretty happy with the portion size. We ordered delivery through LetsEat - took just over an hour on a Saturday night. So while I cannot speak to the place's customer service, I will definitely come back for more food. read more

***THREE AND A HALF STARS*** Great local eatery slash bar slash music venue. It is a moderately sized establishment which means that it doesn't hold huge crowds - just crowds large enough to enjoy the music, the food, and each others' company without it being too loud to hear each other, or the music, or oneself think. The 'backroom' accommodates a small crowd too. When we went, there was a wedding reception of 30 going on. The server was quick, polite, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The menu looked extremely diverse - look forward to sampling more of it during another visit. Our friends had some interesting vodka cocktails and the nachos. We stuck with pop and tried the poutine for two. It was definitely not something I would have been able to eat by myself, although I likely wouldn't send anything back. ;-) Decent fries, tasty gravy and nice curds. I also appreciated that the large tv over the bar was showing a slideshow of lovely photographs - no distracting sports on here while the band is playing. Look forward to more visits. read more

Hey ya'll Sir. Eastalot back giving you yet another opinion - gave The Main (on Main street) a try with Queen Piggy and yet again we left unimpressed. Neither here or there. Sir Eatsalot and his Queen Piggy split: -The Calamari Salad -The Prawn Greek Salad -The Meat Ball Appy & Two Draft Beers Bill came to around $55. Atmosphere - was alright. We befriended a few ants next to our table which didnt ruin anything but matched the environment. It was great that the music wasnt too loud and there was only one TV which was a bonus. Food - well it was overall so so...prawns were dry and crispy. Salad was just okay. Tsaziki was average. Calamari was the best part of the meal but would we go back for their calamari...nope. Do not order from here! I called the restaurant and they told me to only order through just eat, which is just fine so thats what I did. When the food I was absolutely disgusted/disappointed. The driver enroute to our office clearly dropped the food as the salad was all over the bag and leaking out the bottom. When he dropped it off he simply handed it to me and didn't say anything at all. I would have asked for the tip back if it wasn't pre-paid. Then it gets better as I try to put the salad back together i realize for the $15.00 Prawn Greek Salad it only comes with 2 prawns, brown old avocado, and 1 olive.
