If you're in Boise, you cannot go wrong with a visit to the James. Fantastic drink options. Tasty food. Great view from upstairs.

Great Christmas Eve burger and cocktail! Tasty "smash" burger with all the fixings--and I asked for grilled onions to kick it up a notch. Met the friendly owner too! Tip: From the parking lot, enter from the door all the way on the right side and take the elevator up to the restaurant.

I had a blast up in here! (April 2025) I called as they were opening to be sure they were laptop friendly (coming from LA, not every restaurant/cafe allows laptops). Eric (manager?) greeted me upon entering the restaurant. He either recognized my voice or my backpack gave it away. He was very nice, pleasant conversation, checked in to make sure I was being productive while drinking. The entire staff was friendly, I had great service here with Travis and Sam as my bartenders. Super cute place. I love the set up of bar having both an indoor and outdoor countertop. Both sections were comfortable and there are a few power outlets sprinkled throughout the restaurant. The outdoor patio is nice looking down onto the street side. Plenty of umbrellas to shade you from that harsh sun. THE FOOD Fish and chips: score! These were so good. Cooked to perfection, the fries perfectly salted and crisp. I even enjoyed the Cole slaw Cesar salad: it was a good salad, but not a great Cesar salad. To be fair, it was a side salad, so... Chicken Taco: hard pass. Chicken wasn't seasoned and the toppings fell short. *note; I am from Cali, so our taco standards are quite different. THE DRANKS I just did a Negroni tour and I was not disappointed. The bartenders was doing they thang! *Side note; obviously due to my skin color, I did not have a pleasant experience in all places that I visited in Boise. James Kitchen was a wonderful experience. Thank you.

An interesting concept. The small menu consists of tacos, pizza, and burgers. I would say the drinks are definitely the highlight of this place. I had the Perfect Wife which was a delightful (and strong) margarita and the Carijillo which was a delicious coffee flavored drink. For food, I got the Hot Maple Chicken sandwich. It was very messy and I thought lacked flavored. The Idaho Nachos were pretty good. The service is great! We got seated right away and our waitress Kara was fantastic. I think the atmosphere might be better in the summer as when the balcony is open.

Cute upstairs bar on Broadway! We sat at the bar and the bartender was really nice and welcoming! Right away she told us about happy hour specials! We did not eat but had a glass of wine in happy hour and really can't beat the price of a glass of wine on happy hour! It's pretty spacious and adequate space between bar stools. Anything in the boxes on the menu is on happy hour. I really enjoyed the ambiance, decor, and staff. Keep in mind if you are at the bar when sun is setting some of the seats the sun will be directly in your eyes. I'd recommend going to The James!

I was in Boise on a business trip and fortunately this place was walking distance from my hotel. These guys have great burgers, great salads and a really welcoming vibe with an attentive waitstaff. I highly recommend this place!

Just so good, food was excellent, great bar scene, and service was off the charts. We did a pre-concert dinner at bar side, promptly greeted and enjoying theFinal Four games in minutes. Drink menu offers a little bit of everything, went with their old fashioned and it was solid. Ordered a fe2 items off the apps side and enjoyed both immensely. Their finger steaks are HUGE but really flavorful and juicy. I wouldn't usually mention the cocktail sauce but it was so unique; chunky, spicy and paired so well with the crunch and savory of the finger steaks. Also had the tuna tartare which was just as great, generous portion of tuna with fresh avocado and mango. Can't wait to go back and enjoy the patio, what a great spot. Kudos to the chef and staff...awesome job!

A speak easy in Boise! I was intrigued! The whole experience was so fun to share with a group of…read morefriends! We stood in the alley and knocked on the door. A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! The service was superb!

I've been to several speakeasies around the USA and Gatsby should be the standard of what a…read morespeakeasy should be. No really! Imagine yourself walking through the 8th St promenade in downtown Boise. It's hustling and bustling with people and restaurants that are packed. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see an alley. It's kinda dark, maybe a little unsettling at first. You see a steel door with a small panel at the top of the door. No door handles but a green lit old stagecoach light, a small wooden sign hanging g just beyond the door with a key on it. Hmmm, strange. In faded sharpie letters it says Knock knock on the metal door, so you knock twice. The panel on the door slides open and they ask for the password. Whoa!!!! Luckily you called ahead to make reservations so they whispered it to you. You give the password and door opens to a tiny little library with a couple of shelves full of books. The hosts welcomes you and you stare at the bookshelf knowing it isn't just a bookshelf but a door. You try pulling on different books guessing which is the right one but after a minute the hostess shows you and you enter a beautiful brick walled 1920s decorated room with seats and dim lights and no windows whatsoever. The artwork is prohibition-era themed. Heck, there's even a stack of wooden barrels that supposedly hold spirits. That is exactly the speakeasy experience you are looking for. We were seated in the boiler room, a private area which had beautiful wooden lockers with glass doors all lit up and full of booze. Books line the wall and there is an old fireplace covered with candles that have melted wax all over the mantle. In the corner is a poker table. Really the perfect vibe for a speakeasy. Glance at the menu and notice their tang of cheaper to very rare and unique spirits, some costing hundreds of dollars for a shot. Whisky, vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, you name it. But also check out their cocktails. They can even make mocktails if you don't want alcohol. Not only are the drinks unique but so is their presentation. The glades used I've never seen. Some drinks have a printed pattern on them, others come with dry ice that quickly evaporates or a cool smoked filled bubble. The whole experience was just amazing. This is a do not miss opportunity if you like drinks and cool, unique experiences. They even have another room in the back called the Garrison Room which looks like a mineshaft. I just love the thought put into this place. And when you are done, you exit through a nondescript door and exits to a patio area of another restaurant and back out to the promenade. Just a wow experience! So glad I did it.

As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with warm smiles and made to feel welcome. I ordered the Dirty Olive House Martini and was pleasantly surprised to learn that Bardenay is the nation's first restaurant and distillery, serving its own handcrafted spirits. Their house-distilled vodka made for one smooth and delicious martini! Our server, Sabrina, was outstanding--friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. She recommended the fish tacos, and they were absolutely delicious! My husband ordered the burger and fries, and he couldn't stop talking about how good they were. What really impressed me was Sabrina's attentiveness. As soon as she noticed my martini was getting low, she stopped by to see if I'd like another. I figured, "Why not?" I was about to spend a few hours on a plane and was hoping to catch some ! The bar and seating area were spotless, and we enjoyed watching FIFA on the TVs while we ate. If you're flying out of Boise Airport, I highly recommend making time to stop at Bardenay Restaurant & Distillery before your flight. We'll definitely be back!

Today my friend wanted to celebrate her birthday here so of course I said yes! We decided to sit on the outdoor patio today. It wasn't the warmest day but it was beautiful out. The sun was peeking out once in a while. The table was nicely shaded by a huge umbrella. The sun was nice but to have it beating on you isn't the best so the umbrella was appreciated. It was the perfect table for our outing. Jerika (I hope I spelled her name right) greeted my friend and I with her beautiful smile. We got some drinks started so while they were being worked on, my friend and I breezed over the menu. I did somewhat enjoy my charboiled salmon at the Eagle Bardenay for my birthday a couple weeks ago. The chefs did undercook my first plate of salmon. The server was kind to take my plate back to have the chefs remake it. The second attempt was appreciated but it was unfortunately a fail. The salmon came out so dry. I get that I wanted it well done but not jerky. But, today's a new day and I was willing to give it another shot. So today, I ordered the salmon with veggies instead of the salad. My plate came out and it looked promising. I love beautiful char marks on my food. The char marks today were perfect. My veggies looked nicely cooked but I could tell that some of the squash was still undercooked by the color. I didn't mind, it's a sign of freshness. As much as I wanted to stare at the prettiness of my food, I was ready to dig in! My salmon was so good! It was perfectly cooked! No raw spots in the middle, it was flaky and moist. It was a fabulous piece of salmon. The sun dried tomato butter is a fantastic add on to the salmon. I honestly could have polished another piece of fish. The chef that cooked my salmon today needs a raise! My lunch was chef's kiss! My friend enjoyed her lunch and her birthday drink! The outdoor patio was so relaxing. My lunch was also enjoyed. Our server was kind and attentive. I couldn't have asked for a better birthday lunch for my deserving friend. I hope that it won't be another 5+ years till I come back. I will need another plate of salmon with that sun dried tomato butter soon.

Barbacoa is your place to go for a half entertainment and half great food overlooking the (Parkcenter) Pond for a great time and a great meal - (or not, there is a rooftop bar called Luna where one can imbibe if food is not your jam). This is a second trip to Barbacoa. This trip was perfect as hunger was involved AND a late reservation was needed. Barbacoa really books up, but we were in luck, snagging one of the last reservations on a Friday night! We had a lovely waitress and clean-up guy . Lighter appetites can get by on an appetizer (such as Stuffed Poblano Chile with its namesake Barbacoa Beef). We shared the Calamari Fritti with four different sauces which was lovely in presentation and delish! Saved for next time - they make guacomole table-side! Looks so entertaining and yummy! This review reports that surf and turf were enjoyed! One diner had the Baked Salmon, which was promptly eaten (so it must have been good) and yours truly had the special *American Waygu Ribeye Steak*. Not a staple on the menu, but a GREAT meal, especially if ribeye is a favorite cut! Pro Tip: If there is enough room for dessert, tell them you are here for a special occassion and they produce a cotton candy concoction that is sure to please! They were flying out of the kitchen on this late June Friday night visit. Hang on to your wallet! Not gonna lie, this is a pretty pricey meal, but if in the Boise area, this is a must! There is something for everyone and combined with the entertainment and low state tax ;), worth the trip! We all left happy and full and forgot all about the delayed flight! Another Pro-Tip: Oh and for those with a sense of humor, (or not), there is a small keyhole in the men's bathroom that appears to look directly into the women's room. I don't think they see anything serious, but it is cheeky for sure - ladies, make sure you are fully clothed before walking out! This will be on our regular rotation on future trips to Idaho!

Within seconds, I received a text that my order had been received, but not confirmed, and to watch for a confirmation text. After 30 minutes, I still had not received a confirmation text, so I messaged asking for an approximate time. The reply stated they were "slammed" and that my order would be ready in about 30 minutes. After another 45 minutes, I still had not received any communication from them, so I decided to walk over to check on my order, hoping that it would be ready. The first thing I noticed was that there were not a lot of customers inside. I informed the server behind the bar that I was there to pick up my order, and she went back to check. When she returned, she told me that there were no pickup orders. I showed her the email with my order number and told her that I never received a confirmation from them. She went back into the kitchen, then came back and said they didn't have my order, but could make it while I waited - about 10 minutes. I reluctantly agreed and waited. When I got my order, I asked for a few extra cups of sauce. The server was put off, as if asked to perform an overwhelming task. Needless to say, I left the establishment with a less-than-favorable taste in my mouth. 24 hours later, I received a text from them that my order was confirmed and would be ready to be picked up. I texted back that this was 24 hours late and to cancel the order. The reply was that their texting service was unavailable, and to call for questions. I then replied to the confirmation email, hoping that would get through to them. No such luck. The reply I received said that delivery had failed - that their email box was full. I will say that the food was good, and that the server was mainly friendly. However, the whole online ordering system needs some serious revamping. I hope that Whiskey River will take this review as constructive criticism so that future customers will have an easier, smoother online ordering experience.

From the moment you step inside, the place has that quintessential speakeasy feel. The ambiance is dark, moody, and eclectic, with vintage touches throughout. One feature that really caught my eye was a stunning cove-like structure that added so much character to the space. The menu was just as impressive as the décor -creative, varied, and full of unique cocktails that felt thoughtfully designed rather than your standard bar offerings. They even have a few "secret" drinks hidden on the menu, and the staff will happily tell you how to find them, which is a fun touch.Since another reservation was due to arrive in about 40 minutes, we kept it to two cocktails, which was perfectly fine as we were only stopping in for a nightcap. Both drinks were beautifully crafted. I especially loved The Canvas ,it was bright, refreshing, and memorable. My husband wasn't quite as enthusiastic about his cocktail, though he's generally not one to send a drink back or complain. The staff was warm, friendly, and welcoming throughout our visit. Pricing felt fair for the quality of the cocktails and the overall experience.

Our server was amazing and so informative. I really loved their cocktails because they're not super sweet either - I can't handle the sweet drinks. The inside of that place is amazing and relaxing. I loved it so much, such a great place to chill and unwind. Highly recommend this as a stop in Boise!
