Capitol Bar is rapidly becoming one of my favorite spots. What I love: Capitol Bar mixes some of the best classic cocktails in town. Their Old Fashioned is spot on perfect. They also have roughly a dozen beers on tap. Some local, some not--nearly all craft. Queso. Cuz I say so. (meaning--order it! So yum!) They've done special events (fundraisers) with Boise Bully Breed Dog Rescue. Love a business that takes the time to promote and support local nonprofits. Their patio is dog friendly! Dog lovers unite! An entire section of the menu is dedicated to mac 'n cheese. (FTW!) And, if all that didn't sound fabulous enough--for New Year's Eve, they did a special dinner menu with wine pairings. Chef Ryan put together a menu of Malbec poached pear salad, Pickled shrimp cocktail, Pepper-crusted Filet Mignon with rice mushroom pilaf and creamed spinach, and a grand finale of cranberry mousse (which sounds so simple and was...simply delicious!). This is my favorite local neighborhood bar. They are always happy to see you and let you relax and unwind. They have Happy Hour Specials, as well as daily all-day-long specials to entice you throughout the week. Their clientele is very diverse and always welcoming. I'm so happy they were able to make it through Covid and have come back with a limited menu. (Be patient, y'all, they took a hit) I asked Bartender Andrew about the BBQ Pork Sandwich and his face lit up. "Oh its so good!" He didn't lie! It's huge (like, how many meals is this??) and totally hits the spot. The food is actually better than regular "bar food". They are focusing on house-made good grub, not just bar food. Went to have a cocktail before meeting friends for dinner. We've been a handful of times and always had a great experience - we're not regulars by any means but enjoy stopping there for a fig old fashion from time to time. It's never been busy and this time was no different. We always sit at the bar, we like to chat with the bartender. This had to have been the strangest and most uncomfortable experience I've had just about anywhere. We walk in, there's still chairs in the tables but they had been open for a while. We don't think much of it, and are greeted by the bartender. My first thought is that he was drunk. Not like had a beer and was working but like drunk. Slurred words, weird mannerisms. We sit at the bar and he takes our drink order. It was painful to watch him make the cocktails, he acted super confused very uncoordinated, dripping and tipping things over. What would have normally taken a matter of minutes for an old fashion, it was probably a good, awkward 8-10 minutes of him fumbling around. At that point my husband didn't even want to order his drink but begrudgingly did and that took even longer. The bartender was nice but not sober and I'm not sure he was drunk but likely on something else. That experience entirely turned us off to the point that we probably won't go back. I had heard the name several times (always good things) and always semi looked for it when I was downtown (thinking that this would have been downtown for some reason), but never "stumbled" upon it. I was invited to an after-work happy hour on a Friday night and low and behold at Captial Bar... on State St near Glenwood! Invitation accepted! This pace is small, but not too small. They do have a kitchen that is open minimal hours, and really basic foods, which is perfect for a bar. The food is, to me, a little more classy than traditional bar food. Please look at my photo of the menu. I ordered my $5 cocktail, the Manhattan. Once that was gone, I quickly ordered a Cosmopolitan $8.50, followed by a Scofflaw $8.50 (Rittenhouse Rye with sweet and sour). I chose these three because I like to "try" everything on a menu and always something new. Is your favorite food your true favorite food? What if something AMAZING is out there that you haven't experienced yet? Try new things!! :)~ Photos uploaded! Oh... Food... YES! I chose the hummus plate, which came with a well-balanced favorable pita chip and a delicious hummus dip, $7. In addition the new menu in association with Distal Provisions is updated frequently and is always on point. This has become by far my favorite place for cocktails but their beer selection is always excellent. read more

Been here a couple times now, and they've gone from good to great for sure. Wasn't bad prior, but they've made some smart choices with the food and drink menu that elevated their game. They focus on small plates - both lighter and fried things (I didn't try them) - to go along with very reasonably priced craft cocktails. $5 Manhattan with small batch bourbon at happy hour ($6.75 otherwise) is a great deal. And the bartender was top shelf as well. Paid attention to my wife's too polite smile when she said her drink was fine (translation - it's okay, but not exactly how she wanted it) and gave her a hard time until she admitted she wanted it a bit sweeter. He re-made it so it was perfect, everyone won. I like that level of attention in a bar tender. The only possible negative, which isn't a negative to me but you never know what people will jive with - it's in a former drive through restaurant or something? So the decor and setup isn't as "Downtown Boise" as it might be. On the other hand, the prices aren't "Downtown" even though the quality and service are. If you're in the State and Collister area, you've got to check these guys out. When I head back and try the food, if it's as good as the cocktails I'll update the review to 5 starts and put some hearts and flowers on this review somewhere. read more

Great chillout bar in NW Boise. No ridiculous wheels of fortune or karaoke blasphemy (there is a time and a place). Owner, Kevin, was a music journalist in ABQ, NM before moving here in May 2015. Ask him about how a friend started planning to open a Boise bar 20 years ago. Something like that. I instantly felt at home. Praise Be! Negronis and Manhattans on the cocktail menu. Rude bartender with an attitude. People feel unwelcome. The rude bartender I had was apparently one of the "nicer" ones. They wonder why the place is always dead. Also, on a side note, the owners are huge SEC football fans with no roots in the area, not real locals. If you know anything at all about Boise and college football than you know it's not exactly cool to serve beer in an SEC glass in Bronco country. Brought it up to the bartender and her response was "you don't have to drink here". We just drove around Boise looking for a fun place to get a glass of wine for my Fiancé and a Roy Rogers and some Whiskey for me and we found the perfect one here. Calm vibe, wide open spaces, fast and polite staff. The food was incredible and it has similar prices to most taco trucks these days. Nice barbeque we'd-sat. I just witness an all to typical scenario at our local hangout, Capital Bar. This couple came in unmasked when there are visible signs everywhere asking people to wear a mask in the bar unless they are seated. They were told the rules personally and given a mask. They ordered drinks and food and complained about everything. The management tried invein to please them, even as they both continued to cuss at him. It is a shame there are people that come in to an establishment just to complain. This bar is a haven for all the local people in this neighborhood. Im sure you will get a review from these people, most likely the women. She seemed to wear the pants in that relartinship. Just wanted to compliment the management here for their calm. Wife and I and our friends were coming from Eagle (home shopping) and needed a nice cocktail before getting my son for dinner. Found this place on YELP (where else) haha. Decided what the hell!!! Arrived quickly and walked in. I thought ok.....sports bar. Tv's and just basic table seating as well as the bar.....so not very upscale but hey that's ok. Looked at the cocktail menu to see if they offered any "specialties" and did find some that peaked out interest. Oh and checked in on Yelp and got 5 bucks off my first cocktail.....whoooo hoooo. Now let me preface this part of the review and say my buddy and I are sort of "cocktail snobs" and we are mixologists so we are a bit hard on cocktails when we are out. These were.........MADE VERY WELL!!!!! From the glasses they chose to serve in, to the square ice cubes to the quality of the cocktail itself screamed high end cocktail bar. I had a Negroni and then an Old Fashioned. Wow and wow again. Perfectly made. We also ordered the breakfast flat bread and that was tasty! They also have a Bloody Mary Bar.....you basically add the things you want to the vodka and ice. They had horseradish, shrimp, bacon, peppers, probably 15 items. Updated review: I've been underwhelmed the last few times I've visited Capitol Bar. The menu is small and eh. I got a grilled cheese last time. It's a grilled cheese sandwich - my expectations were not high. However, for $8 it was pretty lame. I appreciate the small, dog-friendly patio, though the ambiance is negated by allowing smoking, encouraged by the ashtrays, on every table. Great things going on at The Cap! That's an awesome nickname, by the way. This is your new, local craft cocktail stop. With all of the hype behind Juniper, Press and Pony, and other craft cocktail joints, quality booze-based concoctions are on many of our minds. That's where The Cap steps in. Sure, you've had craft cocktails at fancy locales made to you by tie-clad gentlemen or mustachioed throwbacks to simpler times. However, I bet you haven't had yourself a thoughtfully-created beverage in a standard, neighborhood-bar-type setting. The Cap features great cocktails with a respectable mantra: simplicity. The Cap's official motto is: "Honest Drink." That means a cocktail made with an industry standard (such as Dickel or Absolut), no more than 3-4 ingredients (e.g. liquor, simple syrup, bitters), and in the right balance. We tried the Pimm's Cup (a classic I'd heard of and had to try), the Dacquiri (not your typical, blended, dessert-in-a-glass style), a Vesper Martini (both 007 and my favorite cocktail), and a Gimlet. The Pimm's Cup was incredibly smooth, but not my style (I like to taste my booze); however, my wife drank it up and asked for seconds. I traded her Gimlet, which I preferred because of the nice legitimate lime juice presence (nice and tart) and because I could taste the gin, something manager Kevin and I both appreciate. Speaking of gin, the Vesper was one of the best I've had in the city. The Dacquiri was not for wifey or I, but I appreciated that it wasn't overly sweet and you could actually taste the rum. Kevin is a great, welcoming person who'll make conversation with you and bust out a mean cocktail in a timely fashion (but you can't rush perfection). He walked us through the menu (a few very choice looking bites being produced in a "micro kitchen"). We also chatted about brunch specials ($2 mimosas, $4 Pimm's Cups!) and how brunch food will soon be served. The vibe is, perhaps, the most compelling thing about this place. For whatever reason, the atmosphere (dark, neon lights, simple decor, a few TVs) took me back to neighborhood spots in Oregon; places you'd never call a dive, but certainly wouldn't mistake for some upscale place). The prices are reflected in the laid back ambiance, as they range from $4-8 and are quite affordable for the quality. The Cap features the requisite beer and wine (beer taps looked great... I get stoked when I see Hop Valley). This is a great neighborhood spot with awesome management, some already-dedicated locals (consider how new the biz is), good service and a great, affordable product. This is such a friendly place. The atmosphere is classy, but down to earth. The bartender makes a great Manhattan. The food is so yummy. I can't really decide what is my favorite. So many to choose. One of the worst service and Long Islands we've ever had! The website and Facebook advertised they had food, but it was merely sandwiches and appetizers. Not to mention the Long Island was disgusting. We asked for top shelf and was told they just put lemonade and rum. We waited for a clean table for 10 minutes and they weren't even busy. SO GOOD!!! We were so impressed when we came across this place last night, which was on accident by the way! So glad we did though. My husband and I were driving down State st. Looking for a place to grab a bite to eat and we saw this place. Neither of us had seen it before so we stopped in. The service was AWESOME! The bartender was so nice and on top of it. The food was fantastic - we had the Cubano sandwiches. Can't wait to try the meatloaf sandwich though since that seems to be a favorite.. But it all looked so good. Drinks were great, had a really good beer selection! Besides all of that, the prices were very reasonable, especially since the quality was so great. OH AND the atmosphere was really welcoming!
