Old fashioned

Capitol Bar is rapidly becoming one of my favorite spots. What I love: Capitol Bar mixes some of the best classic cocktails in town. Their Old Fashioned is spot on perfect. They also have roughly a dozen beers on tap. Some local, some not--nearly all craft. Queso. Cuz I say so. (meaning--order it! So yum!) They've done special events (fundraisers) with Boise Bully Breed Dog Rescue. Love a business that takes the time to promote and support local nonprofits. Their patio is dog friendly! Dog lovers unite! An entire section of the menu is dedicated to mac 'n cheese. (FTW!) And, if all that didn't sound fabulous enough--for New Year's Eve, they did a special dinner menu with wine pairings. Chef Ryan put together a menu of Malbec poached pear salad, Pickled shrimp cocktail, Pepper-crusted Filet Mignon with rice mushroom pilaf and creamed spinach, and a grand finale of cranberry mousse (which sounds so simple and was...simply delicious!). It was all scrumptious. What a way to ring in the New Year! Good food, good wine, and live music! Get to it!

This is my favorite local neighborhood bar. They are always happy to see you and let you relax and unwind. They have Happy Hour Specials, as well as daily all-day-long specials to entice you throughout the week. Their clientele is very diverse and always welcoming. I'm so happy they were able to make it through Covid and have come back with a limited menu. (Be patient, y'all, they took a hit) I asked Bartender Andrew about the BBQ Pork Sandwich and his face lit up. "Oh its so good!" He didn't lie! It's huge (like, how many meals is this??) and totally hits the spot. The food is actually better than regular "bar food". They are focusing on house-made good grub, not just bar food. Also, im not.gonna lie, I'll glare at you if you scored to coveted spot by the fireplace that I call "my spot".

Reviewer no. 24 My 355th review. CHECK IN ON YELP FOR A $5 COCKTAIL! $3.50 in savings. Thanks, YELP! I had heard the name several times (always good things) and always semi looked for it when I was downtown (thinking that this would have been downtown for some reason), but never "stumbled" upon it. I was invited to an after-work happy hour on a Friday night and low and behold at Captial Bar... on State St near Glenwood! Invitation accepted! This pace is small, but not too small. They do have a kitchen that is open minimal hours, and really basic foods, which is perfect for a bar. The food is, to me, a little more classy than traditional bar food. Please look at my photo of the menu. I ordered my $5 cocktail, the Manhattan. Once that was gone, I quickly ordered a Cosmopolitan $8.50, followed by a Scofflaw $8.50 (Rittenhouse Rye with sweet and sour). I chose these three because I like to "try" everything on a menu and always something new. Is your favorite food your true favorite food? What if something AMAZING is out there that you haven't experienced yet? Try new things!! :)~ Photos uploaded! Oh... Food... YES! I chose the hummus plate, which came with a well-balanced favorable pita chip and a delicious hummus dip, $7. (see pics) They have a good happy hour on beer, $1.50/pint, and televisions to catch the BIG game! Your bill comes in a book titled, "Mr. Boston Delux Official Bartenders Guide", which was something that I haden't seen before and was unique to Capital Bar.

This is a must in Boise. I recently moved here and wanted to find a cocktail lounge. They went above and beyond my expectations in cocktail quality, atmosphere, and service. I can't wait to come back!

Best freakin cheeseburger in Boise hands down!!!

In town for a few days for the Bronco football home opener. Had a blast tailgating and subsequent game (we won) and had a hankering for a cheeseburger. Looked at yelp and was about to pull the trigger on some Downtown joint when I saw a review for a local bar called the Capitol that said they made the best cheeseburger in Boise hands down. Googled it and found it was only 1/2 mile from where I was staying so...Best Damn Cheeseburger I've had in recent memory. I recommend it highly!

My favorite in Boise. Cozy, intimate and friendly staff. Strong drinks. Good food. Best burger in town in the summer.

A speak easy in Boise! I was intrigued! The whole experience was so fun to share with a group of…read morefriends! We stood in the alley and knocked on the door. A small window in the door opened and we had to provide a password to gain entry. (Initially our large group had to reserve 3 time slots and we would be seated separately.) I was in the first group. We were let into a small area with floor to ceiling bookcases. Of course there was a book that once pulled, opened a secret door to the bar within. The ambiance was dim lighting and groups of comfortable seating areas. The waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the drinks on the menu. I started with a mocktail that could be made vegan by omitting the egg white. Beautifully presented with a flower design. It was sweet and it was tart. The second drink I got was a cocktail that was smooth with a perfect amount of sweet. My friends got cocktails in their unique glasses. When our next group came through, they were led into a room. After a while, one friend came out to say hello to us. The waiter noticed that we knew each other and told my group to follow him. The room was dimly lit and was furnished with comfortable armchairs and couches. Our third group was able to join us in the room and we were able to mingle seated or standing. The different drinks that were ordered were so cool. A smoky bubble was set on top of a cone shaped glass that resembled an ice cream cone. I had a couple of friends that ordered gin drinks and they were served in a bathtub complete with rubber ducky! This was such a fun and special way to celebrate a friend's birthday! The service was superb!

I've been to several speakeasies around the USA and Gatsby should be the standard of what a…read morespeakeasy should be. No really! Imagine yourself walking through the 8th St promenade in downtown Boise. It's hustling and bustling with people and restaurants that are packed. Then, out of the corner of your eye, you see an alley. It's kinda dark, maybe a little unsettling at first. You see a steel door with a small panel at the top of the door. No door handles but a green lit old stagecoach light, a small wooden sign hanging g just beyond the door with a key on it. Hmmm, strange. In faded sharpie letters it says Knock knock on the metal door, so you knock twice. The panel on the door slides open and they ask for the password. Whoa!!!! Luckily you called ahead to make reservations so they whispered it to you. You give the password and door opens to a tiny little library with a couple of shelves full of books. The hosts welcomes you and you stare at the bookshelf knowing it isn't just a bookshelf but a door. You try pulling on different books guessing which is the right one but after a minute the hostess shows you and you enter a beautiful brick walled 1920s decorated room with seats and dim lights and no windows whatsoever. The artwork is prohibition-era themed. Heck, there's even a stack of wooden barrels that supposedly hold spirits. That is exactly the speakeasy experience you are looking for. We were seated in the boiler room, a private area which had beautiful wooden lockers with glass doors all lit up and full of booze. Books line the wall and there is an old fireplace covered with candles that have melted wax all over the mantle. In the corner is a poker table. Really the perfect vibe for a speakeasy. Glance at the menu and notice their tang of cheaper to very rare and unique spirits, some costing hundreds of dollars for a shot. Whisky, vodka, rum, gin, scotch, bourbon, you name it. But also check out their cocktails. They can even make mocktails if you don't want alcohol. Not only are the drinks unique but so is their presentation. The glades used I've never seen. Some drinks have a printed pattern on them, others come with dry ice that quickly evaporates or a cool smoked filled bubble. The whole experience was just amazing. This is a do not miss opportunity if you like drinks and cool, unique experiences. They even have another room in the back called the Garrison Room which looks like a mineshaft. I just love the thought put into this place. And when you are done, you exit through a nondescript door and exits to a patio area of another restaurant and back out to the promenade. Just a wow experience! So glad I did it.

Oldspeak was recommended by a friend as a place to check out while in Boise. I had some downtime in…read morethe middle of the day and it couldn't have been a better fit. Cozy, with cute antique furniture and friendly ownership and staff (hi Shelley!). I ended up having the same downtown the following day and came back. Oldspeak will be a regular spot for me. I've also heard good things via word-of-mouth about the more crowded bar and alcohol times here. Maybe next trip. Love this place!

Friday night in Garden City and you mean to tell me there's a place where I can have beer, a tea,…read moreor even a nitro coffee and a read then buy a book. Yeah. Thats exactly what I'm telling you. Old Speak Bar is that place and it's only for 21 and over. Plenty of books neatly organized and lots of places to get cozy. Whether you are a group of 4 or riding solo, get a drink, find a book, and unplug from the world. I had a great time last night with family and friends. There's some much eye candy and thoughtful pieces properly displayed inside. Our bartender was very friendly and totally felt bad when the beer I chose was out and he had to go change the keg. I lived that life some thirty years ago. He made sure that the my pour from the new keg was done right. All-in-all, Old Speak checks a lot of boxes. It's not dark, it's away from the hustle and bustle and you can totally unwind in the way you want to. " A room without books is like a body without a soul." -- Marcus Tullius Cicero
