I can't say enough good things about the Highlander, it's always the highlight of my trips to Boise. Great vibes, beautiful views, and seriously amazing cocktails make this place a must-visit every time. Pro tip: ask to sit in Amanda's section. She's friendly, super efficient, and knows the cocktail and food menu inside and out, exactly the kind of server you hope for on a great night out. Do not leave without ordering the Birdcage Flight for Two (so fun and totally worth it), and whatever you do, don't miss A Pigeon Walks Into a Bar. Best ceviche I have ever had in Idaho! Where most restaurants in the Treasure Valley drown the ingredients with clamato juice, this place served their's with lots of fresh fish and plenty of tasty substance, enough for two people to share. We sat inside near the bar since most seating outdoors was taken but I'm really looking forward to coming back and sitting out on the roof. Staff was super polite and what impressed me was their dedication to the place being spotless. We need more rooftop spots in Boise so glad Highlander is now open! Great little spot at the top of a cool new hotel called the Renegade Hotel. This side of town is really developing and love the overall vibe so far! Definitely had to get there on the earlier side to get a spot outside as it gets busier the later it gets. Not much in the way of food but some fun appetizers. Had the chips and guac, chicken poppers, and duck fat fries. Got a 3 for $40 deal and split with some friends. Otherwise they were a bit pricey on their own. Chips were really good but needed a bit more to finish off the large serving of guac. I also got the blueberry lemongrass ginger shrub seltzer mocktail! It was good and felt more elevated than some mocktails I've had other places. Friends that had the alcoholic drinks said they were good. The seating is comfy and I appreciate that there are so many places to sit and hangout within the hotel and rooftop bar. Servers were very attentive. Came back to ask if we needed more drinks and fill up our waters often. This will definitely be a staple summer spot. read more

I had the Orange Cream mocktail, which was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere was just as impressive--the decor was stylish, and the views were stunning. On a clear day, you get a breathtaking panorama of the city and mountains. Plus, the patio was well-equipped, with a covered section and heaters throughout, making it comfortable no matter the weather. Wow!!! Not in a good way. I'm writing this as I am in my Uber leaving this bar. The service was absolutely terrible and had to get up to ask for a check after asking for it two different times. Highlander Rooftop Bar @ Renegade Hotel, went with 2 stars but would say it's closer to 2.5 stars. I sincerely hope they work out some kinks based on the potential for the location, keep reading for more specifics. Decided to try this new spot on a Saturday night with some friends. Couple warnings, parking is super annoying right now in this area because of all the construction and closed off street spots (valet is available). Next warning, if you get too hot in direct sun you might want to skip. Very little seating in the shade, so if it's hot and sunny day plan accordingly. The building design and construction is well done. The rooftop spot is dialed, the eastern and southern views are gorgoues, watch planes land at BOI while enjoying a drink. The spirit selection at the bar is mediocre, needs more options in Bourbon and Tequila/Mezcal. The staff, this is what happens when you hire people from a job fair. Also it was obvious there is no dress code/supplied uniform. Staff were wearing whatever they found clean on the floor of the bedroom, and I will just say the choices were "interesting". Hire some professional staff and provide uniforms, please! Drinks, well if you like a good Old Fashioned this is NOT the spot. How they made the bourbon almost clear I have no idea, and this was after asking for a standard old fashioned "light on the sweet". Their "Summerville Old Fashioned" I would not touch with a 10ft pole. Now their skinny Margarita with either anejo or mezcal was very good. Food, this is where things made a turn for the better. The Duck Fat Fries, OMG, get these for sure, in fact get two orders. Next up, the fried artichoke hearts, these really surprised me. Would not typically ordered but the fry was not heavy at all and the sauce with lemon acidity was awesome. The sliders, meh, overcooked meat and bun was too dense/heavy. Same for the chicken pops, meh, no crisp to the deep fry and sauce was just ok. Last but definitely least, the guacamole and chips. Guacamole was way under seasoned, but fresh, and the chips were the cheapest most basic chips I've ever been served. read more

Really hoping management can get this place on track as it has such great potential being a large rooftop bar. This was our first time and what struck us was no sign or host to advise if it's seat yourself. We walked around the whole bar before we were able to confirm with an employee that it is indeed seat yourself. We watched as countless others did the same thing after we sat down. There's also no sign off the elevator and two entrances into the bar which is confusing in itself, no intentional flow of traffic into the bar is an oversight. Service is painfully slow and what's even slower is the food. It didn't come out warm either. We I ordered the Chicken Pops which were messy and hard to eat. The Ahi Tuna was not good- very cheap grade and was left largely untouched. The guac was the best out of the three. Drinks were pretty standard but very slow to come. People at tables around us were similarly looking around wondering if there were any servers working. We asked a man in a suit who was just standing around watching the tables and people, not sure what his purpose was, if we need to order at the bar or if a server would come and he said, a server should come be he's not really sure how it works. Another table asked him the same. He never once went to go let other staff members know that multiple tables had been left waiting. We finally noticed people get up from the bar-top so we moved to the bar where we just ordered food and drinks with the bartender. We were so excited to try this place. First impressions: We arrived at 5:15 and the place was a mess; dirty tables, dried spills on the tables and floors. Service was below average. Our server helped customer that arrived after us, before he helped us. He made no attempt to clean our table. After we got our food he never checked back to see if we need anything or if we were happy with our food. The food was just OK. They were out of the slider, but I heard they were really good. My husband and I got here at about 5:30pm on a Sat. evening which was Valentine's weekend, but the 15th. We used their valet to avoid having to park farther... it was $5/hr. with a $10 minimum. You pull up in front of the hotel on the street and park next to the "valet" signs. We just walked in and told them at the desk that we parked there. They took our info and keys and we were on our way! Easy. We took the elevator to the 8th floor and walked in the open door around the corner. It was quite easy to find..we just followed the hum of the patrons enjoying their evening. The place had a cool vibe and such a beautiful view of the snowy mountains and the city. We overheard our waiter talking to other patrons saying it was the busiest it's been since their opening! Luckily when we walked in there was a spot for two open so we sat right down. Otherwise it was packed! Fyi- you seat yourself when you arrive, no need to wait for anyone seat you. Our waiter, Steven, was fantastic. The place was absolutely packed and he was on top of everything as well as had a great attitude and energy. He came to us within a minute or so of us sitting and asked if we were ready to order. We ordered drinks, (not on the menu), and they were perfect...a Moscow Mule and straight whiskey on the rock, haha. They had Basil Hayden whiskey which my husband really enjoys. We also ordered the guacamole, which came with plenty of chips. It was also good...mild, but good flavor. Maybe add a little salt? This is the first place we've ever been where the guac is really plentiful and not mixed with an abundance of lettuce. It came out quickly and the guy that delivered it was upbeat and seemed happy to be there. Paying was quick and easy as well.
