The Immigrant is one of those bars you want to gate keep. It's dim, intimate, candlelit, perfect second date vibes. On any given night you'll spot a date that's either going spectacularly well or crashing in real time, and the usual table of locals. The vibe is laid-back, unpretentious, and somehow still manages to feel like a secret, even though it's been around forever. They have a pretty expansive wine list: a mix of Old World staples, a few left-field choices (Greek Cab, Austrian Grüner, even some orange wine), and just enough premium bottles if you want to flex. A wine connoisseur might wish for more depth or obscure producers, but nobody's turning up their nose here, it's the sweet spot between approachable and interesting. After dinner in the area, our waiter recommended this cocktail bar to grab some drinks after. It was a nice find with a rustic vibe. The drink menu is pretty limited, but super affordable. We each had a Spicey Mezcal Marg ($14), which was refreshing and smokey. We accidentally dropped the lime garnish, but the bartender was kind enough to replace it for us. A cute bar in the East Village :) Neither person in our party of two drink very much (or are particularly knowledgeable about wine), so we ended up finishing a single drink each within the first hour or so and were not keen on ordering anything more. We sat at the bar, talking for another 2.5 hours after closing out our tab and only left when we realized how late it had gotten. The group seated next to us was playing card games on the bar top the entire time we were there! I think most places would have rushed us all out within 1.5 hours of seating us if we did not continue ordering drinks, but no issues here :) (Perhaps it was because it was late at night on a weekday...) I have, of course, been continuing on my quest to become an espresso martini aficionado, so I zeroed in on the cocktail list immediately. The Immigrant's version, it turns out, uses a run-of-the-mill recipe. The coffee flavor could have been a bit more pronounced, but the bite from the liquor wasn't too strong. I enjoyed my glass. I sipped some of the Olema rosé and was pleasantly surprised by the flavors I picked up on. It was a brighter wine. A bit crisp and almost fruity. My partner wanted just to try a new bar on a Saturday evening.He heard good things so why not give it a shoot. When stepped in the vibe was lit. It felt Intimate, if you sat in the back, or fun,if you sat at the bar. Food: 5/5 My partner got the hot dog and I got a modified guacamole ( can't handle pico) with some pita. They were both much better than we would have thought for a bar. Max's ability to manage all stations is incredible. Drinks: 4/5 My favorite was the non-alcoholic Negroni while my partner preferred the happy hour orange wine (for the flavor notes). I can't speak to wine but he said it was good for an orange wine. I really liked my drink but wish the hibiscus was stronger. All in all, I would go back! The service here was amazing considering it was a one man show! Like this dude needs a raise. We were confused how it worked at first but you just basically pick a side and ask the bartender if they have any seats available. The bartender was super friendly and told us to wait a few minutes as a table was wrapping up. As far as ambiance goes, it's intimate, cozy, and dimly lit. You scan a QR code for the menu and there's a small selection of wine, beer, and food. We opted for just two glasses of wine and we were happy with our choices. My friend and I found The Immigrant on a freezing cold, snowy day in the city. We'd been running around all afternoon and had time to kill before going to an off-Broadway show that evening. When we entered, we were greeted by the bartender, who pointed out the only available table (the interior is quite small). We took the table and accepted menus. The Immigrant has happy hour every day from (I think I remember this correctly...) 4 - 6 pm, so we took advantage of reduced drink and food prices. The Immigrant is small and dark, just like you would expect a bar to be in a tucked-away spot inside an old tenement building. The bartender, who was the sole employee in the place, was doing everything: taking food and drink orders, running to the other side, where the kitchen is, and then delivering food and drinks. Yet we didn't wait long for anything, even as the bar filled up over an hour or so. And he did all of this without losing his smile or relaxed demeanor. What's the upside to the business to make things more difficult for your patrons? (Note: it was not busy / full when this happened) Edited to reply to Jason: Babe, bill was over $40 and in New York City, it is unlawful to set a minimum dollar value greater than $10 and even if not city law, minimums above $10 violate credit card agreements with Visa, Mastercard, etc. You absolutely should have been able to split between two cards and allowed us to pay for our own drink given the final tab amount y. The bartender was quite rude. We enjoyed the selection of beer, and the bar was nice. As we wanted to leave, I tried to get the bartenders attention. He motioned that he would be over. When he came over, he bought another beer with him. I said I didn't want another beer, and that I was trying to get his attention, in order to get the check. When he brought us the check, he rudely said that most people don't waive if they want the check, they waive if they want the beer. As he was doing this, he handed us the payment terminal, and aggressively pointed to the 18% tip sign. You don't quite expect this kind of service from a bar. Came upon this cute little wine bar while staying in East Village - this was a couple of doors from the East Village Hotel. There are two sides - the right seems to be move for wine aficionados while the left for beer and small eats. I sampled one beer while there from their dozen or so taps (most had stuff that's a bit more common - standouts were the excellent Brouwerij Huyghe Delirium Tremens and the Weihenstephan Original Helles - I noticed while up in NYC that both of these seem to be fairly common in the local craft pubs. I wanted something a bit more local and settled on an Oxbow Brewing Co Promontory Saison (yeah I know it's Maine, but more local than some of the other offerings). The Promontory Saison/Farmhouse Ale - fairly solid rye saison - a bit lighter on the mouthfeel with decent spicy banana nose. Full bodied with a slightly dry finish - color was light amber. Not the best in this style I've had but still good. I didn't have any of the food but spied a pretty good looking charcuterie with cheese next to me at the bar - I was looking for something a bit more substantial and the bartender suggested their sister restaurant a block over - the Athenian (quite good). I noticed on Yelp check-in that they offer the Mixed Greek Olives as a bonus so make sure you check-in. I'll return at some point and try the food - may up my rating at that point but initial impressions were 4/5 stars. Service at The Immigrant was top-notch - very friendly and with good recommendations. If you're looking for more local craft brews there's an excellent growler/bottle shop on 9th across 1st Ave about a half a block down on the right called Good Beer that serves flights-to-pints - hit it a couple of nights later. read more

We were lucky to grab one of the front tiny tables with banquet seating, a cozy corner at that, which was really intimate, but not in a "I'm right on top of that first Tinder date going on next to me," kind of way. Our bartender/server was very attentive and even was cool enough to acknowledge that he overheard me lament that I had ordered a plate of olives before noticing a check-in offer for a freebie that you had to mention when placing the order. "No problem, I actually didn't even put the order into the computer yet, so just show the check-in offer to me now." Wow! I wasn't even going to mention it and just use it another time (spoiler alert: I'll be back!) I was served a generous pour of a Pinot Noir so velvety that I had to order another. The olives are also a generous portion as are the salty rich Marcona almonds, perfect fatty accompaniments to the wine. With the YD specials, the wine kept on a-flowing. And I just love wine bars and this one is a good one. I have stopped in here a few times and always like the vibe*. There is a bar and about 7 or 8 tables. Décor is very nice and dim lighting creates a warm and toasty ambiance. Love their Pinot Noir, especially during Happy Hour (5:00 PM -6:30 PM) when it is $8 a glass. I have also tried the Cabernet, but the Pinot Noir is better. If you want a little bit of a nosh order the mixed olives ($6.00 or free if you show your Yelp Check-in) and if you're still hungry order the cheese and fruit plate. Three types of cheeses are served with slices of French baguette bread sliced the perfect thickness and some fruit. I think it was a very good portion size for 2 people to share. The soft La Lur cheese is amazing, and the 2 hard cheeses were tasty as well. Service is always welcoming and friendly, especially when Jason is behind the bar. Under-the-radar, simple, yet confusingly split into two parts for no necessary reason: wine bar on the right and tap room on the left. I went to the tap room, and the vibe was quiet and intimate. I briefly checked out the wine bar, and that seemed slightly more fun and somehow better. Anyway, there's seats at the bar and a few tables in the back. It's a tight place. While they of course have tons of wine and beer, respectively, the food menu is limited, with the bar basics, such as cheese and meat plates. I only got a Seltzer and the olives dish that was surprisingly impressive (Yelp offer still stands at time of this review), and the bartender easily gave it to me. He seemed great. I wasn't there for long, but it seemed ideal for a first or second date or an intimate get-together with a friend or two. Would I go back? Meh, not really.
