I have stopped in here a few times and always like the vibe*. There is a bar and about 7 or 8 tables. Décor is very nice and dim lighting creates a warm and toasty ambiance. Love their Pinot Noir, especially during Happy Hour (5:00 PM -6:30 PM) when it is $8 a glass. I have also tried the Cabernet, but the Pinot Noir is better. If you want a little bit of a nosh order the mixed olives ($6.00 or free if you show your Yelp Check-in) and if you're still hungry order the cheese and fruit plate. Three types of cheeses are served with slices of French baguette bread sliced the perfect thickness and some fruit. I think it was a very good portion size for 2 people to share. The soft La Lur cheese is amazing, and the 2 hard cheeses were tasty as well. Service is always welcoming and friendly, especially when Jason is behind the bar. First time here this evening so my review is based on the (good) Rose' wine. There's seating at the bar as well as smaller tables in the back. In fact, The Immigrant has two entrances with the same set up. There's not much of a visual ambiance. It's standard with wooden tables and chairs. Come here for a quiet happy hour. I've known of this bar for a really long time now but have never been. It's sort of tucked away from the usual drinking spots in the Village and it's great for when you want to go out for happy hour but don't want to deal with a crowd. When I came there were only two other couples aside from me. I took a spot by the window and sipped my wine while reading a book. It was lovely. It was approximately 700 degrees in NYC in August, and I was super happy that this place was dimly lit and had air conditioning. It was pretty quiet-- only one other couple sat next to us and one couple was at the bar. It was quiet and great for conversation. I had the Sancerre and the Sauvignon Blanc -- and highly, highly recommend the Sauv. I was snooping on the couple next to us who had ordered a cheese plate. I've been to the Immigrant half a dozen times, mostly on dates. This started as a small, wood paneled wine bar that ended up doing well another that the owners expanded next door to a similar sized space. The beer/wine lists vary a bit by venue but are mostly similar. I'm not the best to ask about wine options, but they have wine by the bottle as well as on draft. Options are pretty accessible, so no worries there. Beers range from a variety of basic craft options. Think saisons, IPAs, and the like from bigger microbreweries like Bell's. I think that sums the Immigrant up very well actually. It's good but nothing out of the ordinary. I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come again given the other options nearby, but it's reasonable as a cheap date place. read more

I went to the Immigrant while visiting New York. The entrances are divided, there is one door for the tap room and one door for the wine bar. The wine bar looked pretty busy so we went to the tap room. The tap room was very warm and intimate! It also was not super loud like most New York bars so you didn't feel like you had to talk over the noise. It had cozy booths and candle lit tables. They had a nice draft menu and cocktail menu. I had the bee's knees. It was very good! It was similar to a gimlet. I would recommend to others and go back in the future. The waiter was very nice. I came here with my sidekick after work on a Wednesday night. Our mission involved a certain fella she's been fancying (hey, I can be my sidekick's wing[wo]man, can't I?). Jason, the owner and proprietor, is a gracious and patient host. He'll pour you beer (Captain Lawrence on tap; a small but comprehensive bottle selection) or wine (a streamlined list that manages to travel the world while keeping it accessible and pronounceable) and talk or listen as the situation requires. As you sample the carefully curated beverage list, you will meet a fabulous crowd of East Village regulars, from next-door neighbors to local (F&B) industry folks to the cute girl who inked the owner. Wander towards the back of the room and check out the cozy sexy lounge-y seating, not to mention the creatively resourceful use of the small, narrow space. This is where you ought to go for a glass of wine in the EV. There's a cava and a real Champagne (for $11 a glass! Had to try it; totally drinkable), a California Cab for $12 a glass (a steal, if that's your thing), a Grenache/Syrah rose, Sancerre and Moschofilero and everything in between. The place is named for JFK's "A Nation of Immigrants." The photo in the loo is inoffensively racy. It's perfect, really. My only possible beef is with the wine glasses. The wine's pretty enough to warrant some sexier stemware. This guy Jason's got a great little place. Go visit him; he'll take really good care of you. read more

"If I were an East Village wine bar, this is who I'd be" This is one for storing in the memory banks when you find yourself late on a Friday night on date in the East Village, and wondering where is the last place you should go (before the obvious). Get away from the annoying inebriated college kids on St. Marks, the over crowded speakeasy's, the general dive bars and go here for that last one. This small, but never crowded, converted retail boutique shop, is the perfect antidote for the frenetic neighborhood. Anyone you bring here will enjoy it, unless you are hanging with fist-pumping, overly-tanned douches. I've had the food and its average. Stick with the wine, but they do have a few taps for beet. It feels like the West Village in here. This is equal or better than some of the awesome wine spots in the West Village. Tip: Go late and order a bottle for last call. You just might get to stay a little while and finish that bottle until the wee hours if you are super nice and generous. A girlfriend and I were looking for a low-key wine bar on a Saturday night and stumbled upon Immigrant. The atmosphere seemed cool and it wasn't too loud to talk to each other - so we entered. I could over look this, but the main reason for the 2 stars (and not 3 stars) is that the bartender spilled an entire glass of wine down my back. He was apologetic, but that was about it. So tonight we explore the East Village. Beers only, cannot handle anymore. It's already on fire. I have a dark rye beer and you have the something that is 8% ABV. We sit at the bar, take a few sips of out beers, stare into each other's eyes, and wait for the lust to settle in. At one point, a very cute blonde comes to the bar, clearly flirting very heavily, stares me right in the eyes. And it short circuits my brain, not that the beer is helping to keep reality in check. I checked this place out for the first time last week after walking by it for years. I hadn't noticed the 2 separate entrances: one for the wine bar and the other for the Tap Room. The fact that I missed that detail made me realize I'd make a horrible witness...in case anyone was wondering. Decided on the wine bar as it was less crowded, but the Tap Room was intriguing with both wine and beer on tap. Wine on tap - you read that right. The wine bar is a nice date spot. Get there early and you'll catch happy hour. If you can't get there before 6:30, the wines are still decently priced with a great variety. You can sit at the bar or in the more quiet area in the back. This is a narrow spot but does not get overcrowded as to cause a bout of claustrophobia. All in all, this a decent wine spot, a good first date option and I look forward to trying the Tap Room soon. read more

Came to The Immigrant last Friday after work to meet up for dinner plans. This is an interesting little bar that I've walked by plenty of times on my way to other places, it was nice to actually have a reason to go inside. We took over the little section all the way to the right-hand side of the bar counter right by the entrance. I love the large windows that provide lots of natural lighting and I like the whole overall dim, rustic, exposed brick feel - it's kinda NYC-fancy chic without being too bougie and romantic - but not so much so that it's alienating. At the end of the day, The Immigrant is a wine bar with a nice, encompassing selection of wines to choose from that were obviously curated lovingly with eclectic tastes in mind - although I do wish they would have had more roses and sparkling - just to round the menu out as I generally go with whites and their selection here is quite nice. One of my friends ordered a Sancerre which is also one of my favorite white wines from France that's very much light-bodied, yet rich in flavor and floral textures. Having gone to Paris last fall, I learned that it is pretty highly regarded in France and goes well with several different foods and very much so simply on its own. My other friend opted for a Sorachi Ace, a Brooklyn Brewery beer that she found a little hoppy, but still good. I ordered a SingleCut Beersmiths beer which was apparently brewed in nothing other than QUEENS and was actually QUITE delicious so I was very pleased. The cheese platters and other offerings on the menu seemed a bit pricier than what I would want to necessarily order in that neighborhood or place. Prices are something I'd rather pay at Winebar, Von or just a bigger more established wine bar. The Immigrant has a cozy, neighborhood charm who's appetizer prices are trying too hard to charge a lot for small portions. I like this place, but I'd only come here for a glass of wine, a few glasses of good craft beer, play with their super cool American-themed rotary phone (Captain America anyone!???) and then eat elsewhere. Love this place! Once again thank you to Yelp for informing me of such a lovely establishment. My friends and I made this the last stop for the night. We were greeted by some of the patrons and found a spot right by the window with a lovely view of e.9th street. Me and a friend had a glass of white wine and another friend had a san pellegrino. They do have a nice selection of wines and if wine is not your forte, then there's beer as well. The space itself is small and narrow, so I felt that we got the best spot in the house. I met up w a girlfriend there on a Tuesday when we both felt like we need to wine down the week for a bit, I felt in love with the cute place immediately the minute i walked in, it's dim with candle lights on its tables w romantic feels. it's a very narrow place with the L shaped bar and bar seats leading to few tables and booth seats which was arranged in very intimate ways. we were greeted by the bartender and seated ourselves in the back on the comfortable booth/bench seat. It was very flowly night with people come and go, jazz music playing in the background, at the same time we can also carry on a good conversation pairing w the wines. The selections of wines are somewhat limited in my definition as a winebar, what it's lacking is tempranillo in reds, but it'll fine if you just want something simple. I ordered a malbec, a relatively young one, my gf had cabernet sauvignon which she quite enjoyed. There are no foods serve here, but there are cheese and olives which will do just fine w the wines. I came here for a 10-12 person birthday party, as they let us reserve a spot as long as we had 5 people there at the time of the reservation. The spot is definitely tiny, so this type of strategy for space is pretty clutch. The wine selection is really great, and they will pour generous tastings. The one disappointment was despite the size of the venue, there was pretty minimal service, and I waited a long time to get my second drink. I was so pleased with this place. I've only known the Ruffian as the wine bar around the east village, but the Immigrant is just as good, possibly marginally better. It's the perfect date spot. There are two entrances to the Immigrant. One side is for the wine, the other for craft beer. I know nothing about beer, so we went to the wine side. The bartender was friendly but not as knowledgeable about wine as the bartenders at the Ruffian. But friendly. It's no frills and there's limited seating. I'm not sure if we were lucky because it was holiday week but it was quieter and slower than what others have experienced there. I liked it especially because it was quiet, and I could hear my date and talk to them. I'll be back to try their beer side and other wines they have. read more

Wonderful spot! Came here after a not so good happy hour somewhere else on the same street. It was a breath of fresh air. Very tiny place, very open and cozy at the same time. Bartender was really friendly and helped pick out wines for us. Happy hour is $7 for any wine on the list. There was one other couple there, this was a little after 5 on a Tuesday. Pretty sure there are no tables, we stayed up front but it seemed like a bar only place. No kitchen, but they offer snacks like cheese platters and olives. A place to chill and drink in East Village on a Friday night that's not stuffed to capacity...sign. me. up. My friend and I came to The Immigrant right at the end of their happy hour on Friday night and got a little table behind the bar. I was so shocked that it wasn't crowded that I enjoyed my experience ten times more. We ordered a bottle of a great sancerre wine which was originally $40, but the bartender gave to us for $32 with the happy hour discount. We also got a free dish of greek olives for checking in (thanks Yelp!) and stayed and chatted and got happy tipsy. The service was great. The wine was great. The atmosphere was perfect. I decided to try this Wine Bar out for the first time, since it was one of the participating bars for Yelp Drinks 2012. I ordered the sparkling wine, Cava. I stayed with it all night because it was such a great choice. It was light bodied and quite refreshing. Plus, being 1/2 off was a good reason as well. Their olives were very juicy. The exposed brick always carries this classic, romantic vibe. I didn't like how dark the lighting was, though. Anyways, it was a nice experience.
