The Spaniard is a spot for a real drink if you're in the mood. I've been here a few times. The last time was a couple of weeks ago, were in town for the weekend. After a nice stop and a secret garden in west Greenwich, I decided to use the points I had racked up and suggested a beverage at the Spaniard. It was agreed upon, in part as i suggested "they probably have a nice bathroom". Of which they did. It helped they had a nice house drink menu too. My gal found something she would like, and she did. After a fun drink off their menu I got a scotch. Old Putney 12 year. Actually the bartender came up and said they were out, would I want a 18 year or 20 year, something like that. it was a bit more money but it was he last beverage of the weekend trip so I got it. My Lourd it was good. If we had time I would have gotten an Oban they had, but we were off. But we will be back, maybe this year. And if I have racked up enough points in the area, I will suggest this excellent whisky bar. read more

Well if this isn't a perfect late night destination in NYC, I don't know what is! A last minute whim landed me in NYC on Holiday Eve 2024 and I needed a meal. Walking through the cold streets, I stumbled upon The Spaniard which has quickly become one of my favorite NY destinations! We were there for a quick 30 hour trip to experience the "Holiday Magic". After a long day of travel, we just needed something good. We arrived and they accommodated us in a back booth tucked behind the bar, perfect! Our waiter was a delight and very responsive. The martini was kick-ass and our waiter was kind enough to offer us many recommendations. We landed on Charbroiled Oysters, Steak Tartare, and French Onion Dip. Someone slap me, I'm drooling while I write this review over a year later. Seriously, phenomenal. Every bite was amazing! Let me be so honest, if I was 25 this place would be a 5/5. The vibe is very young and loud and fun. I'm just aged out of it I think, and that's fine! It was packed on Friday night, and a few friends and I wanted to grab drinks and light food. We sat in the open seating by the bar, and our bartender took our order. I'll say the service was great for this type of bar. The food came quick and the bartender was wonderful and friendly. The food was surprisingly good too, but it was fries and a Caesar salad.. hard to mess up girl dinner! However, would I come back? Probably not. Hostess sat us with out checking us in, which causes us problems on the reservation apps. She was more focused on flirting with the wait staff. The service was insane. One person gave us silverware, two seconds later another person gave us silverware not even noticing the silverware already on the table. They left the menus on the table the entire time. Appetizers and mains came at the same time. We were told the combo shrimp and calamari app was not available, so we said the calamari app was fine. When the app came it had shrimp in it. This is a phenomenal place to go for amazing food in the West Village. The smashburgers are underrated and have my vote for one of the best in New York. Fresh cut potatoes are transformed into amazing fries to complement the burgers. The drinks here are second to none, even for those not consuming alcohol. In addition to everything else you can imagine, the mocktails here are excellent. This is a classic West Village bar and restaurant, very easy to imagine luminaries from the past hanging here with friends. I visited the Spaniard on a warm Spring Friday night for dinner with a party of 6 for dinner. We were seated immediately at our reservation time, despite how busy it was. We really wanted to come for the burger! It may have been the weather or a Knick playoff game going on but this place was packed at 7:30PM - like shoulder to shoulder, no room at the bar crowded (borderline fire hazard)- filled with 20 somethings. We sat in the booth and the star of the night foodwise was the Patty Melt, and not the burger, to our surprise. We ordered all the appetizers and there were all average, even the fried calamari which typically is not the case. Staff was attentive and helpful/friendly. Security guards outside Negative here is given the crowd, its impossible to go to the unisex bathroom - line was at least 10 deep and we went to another bar after. You also won't hear your guests speak given how loud it was. There are tables outside When we left, there was a line of 50 deep outside of sub 30s waiting on line to get in and it was only 10pm. Maybe it was the night we went (Friday) but if your intention is to have a meal to catch up with friends - this was not the place on the night we went. If you want to party and socialize potentially with strangers, this may be your place. read more

I've been here several times for drinks prior to this visit and always enjoyed the experience. This time we were a group celebrating a birthday and we had the small room in the back of the bar which worked out perfectly. The servers were attentive and helpful. There were a variety of things ordered but everything I tried was very good! The chorizo fritters and buttermilk biscuits were ordered for the table and disappeared within minutes. Delicious! The beau and I had a smash burger and crispy chicken salad. Both hit the spot. I heard lots of ooohs and aaaahs from the table indicating a happy bunch of people. This was my second time going to the Spaniard. The first time it was super packed and I did not enjoy it. However, this time my friend booked a table and we got a booth in the second room. We had a lot of space and there were waiters to come take our orders for drinks. I enjoyed this experience much more than my first one. Came here for a quick drink on a Sunday afternoon after brunch. We ordered aperol spritz and a dirty martini (which was a bit dirtier than my boyfriend would've liked). One of our drinks had a little fuzz on the straw but our server was quick to notice, made us aware of it and said she'd grab another straw for us. Something minor but we appreciated it! They had a chill crowd and the game was on TV. Overall, attentive staff and quick service! I could not recommend the Spaniard highly enough. I was looking for a bar in the area to host a large group of friends and e-mailed a number of them to see if they could accommodate us. Not only did the Spaniard offer to help, but they went above and beyond. They let us reserve a private space in a crowded bar and George and his team made sure that we had a great time. My entire group raved about the service from the bartenders and even from the bouncers (which, if you've been to basically any bar in NYC, you know how rare that particular compliment is). I would definitely recommend the Spaniard to anyone looking to host an event for a big group. I know its going to be my new go to spot for it! read more

I started with the new "Drunken Love" cocktail, a tasty concoction of tequila, aloe liqueur (a fresh first for me), watermelon juice and salted honey. It was light, refreshing and a tasty way to kick off our meal. For food, we started with an order of the chips and French onion dip, which was without a doubt the best I've ever had -- it's on a completely different level from the stuff that comes in a can. Each bite was packed with flavor with strong notes of onion (obviously) and garlic. The crispy house-made chips complemented the chips well. For my entree, I ordered the Smash Burger -- two delicious beef patties topped with American cheese, lettuce, pickles and a generous spread of burger sauce. The beef was juicy and flavorful, and the burger sauce added a tangy note to each bite. The fluffy sesame seed bun did a good job of holding everything together. I was surprised that the burger didn't come with a side, and the waiter didn't ask if I wanted a side -- the burger was filling so I didn't need fries, but it would have been nice to at least be asked. The service was decent. We waited for quite some time because the waiter had not seen that we were seated. That was partially due to being seated in a corner of a room crowded with people standing for a birthday party. Granted, we were told that it was loud in the room and asked if we would rather sit outside. We opted for the inside and ended up regretting it as the group got louder and louder (and closer and closer to our table) as the night went on. This place definitely has more of a standing-room-only bar than a sit-down restaurant, so that's something to consider if you're looking for something a little more low-key. read more

Went here for brunch with a same day reservation for 1 pm on a Saturday. We were about to get a table for two, 45 minutes prior to our reservation time. The street side seating was comfortable, but their covered benches outdoors offers a great seating area for larger groups. Staff overall is very welcoming and friendly and we were seated on our table right away. We ordered 3 cocktails which included a Spicy Margherita, Paloma, and a Passion Fruit Mojito which were all priced at $16. All cocktails were absolutely excellent, especially the Spicy Margherita which had both, a spice and alcohol kick! For food, we got Green Egg Scramble ($15) and a Veggie Smash Burger ($17). While the food was very flavorful, the portion sizes were quite disappointing and the price to value ratio just did not feel good. We also had an incident where a drunk hobo harassed us for a few minutes and the restaurant staff didn't really intervene. Overall though, we had a good time here. Service definitely was good, and food arrived within 20 minutes of ordering. read more

The seating is completely uncomfortable, and at the wrong height/distance from the table. Moved; there were giant horseflies EVERYWHERE. The server didn't come for about 20m. Again, midafternoon lunch, not so busy. I ordered a drink, which completely didn't seem like the drink I ordered on the menu. I ordered a smashburger, which was completely charred and overdone. Not "juicy", by any means. Nowhere does it say the "special sauce" is spicy- I love spice, but not on my burger. Really salty and dry. Also I barely even eat lunch in general and I'm STILL HUNGRY, an hour later and eating snacks. I'll definitely be getting my burgers elsewhere... read more

I think of Gladiator when walking in, I am "The Spaniard". Actually I'm Italian & Greek, regardless of where my ancestors planted their asses in the Mediterranean Sea, the Spaniard is cool AF. Their bar is fully stocked with different Scotches and Bourbons. Sure there's a Jameson bottle front and center, their menu board breaks down the different Scotch regions. I want to sit here for hours and taste everything but I have Ranger tickets (Lets go Rangers) in my pocket and so I have to bolt. I've been reading the menu online, I want an Old Fashioned Cocktail and the most Instagrammed Burger on the planet, The Smash Burger. My drink comes to me quickly. I should have asked for more ice! Man, that is one chilly willy. The ice is a bit much IMHO. Forget all that nonsense, the Smash Burger is their recreation of a Big Mac. The Spaniard burger is simple, two all smashed patties, special sauce, lettuce, American cheese, pickles all on a sesame seed bun. Merica! The Spaniard Burger is very juicy and flavorful, you want to keep coming back for more. Unlike the thick patty Black Label Burger served at Minetta Tavern, each Spaniard patty is smashed flat. It's different but that's where that beautiful crispy, grilled outside caramelization shines. It was soooo good! I liked the special sauce, I wanted Ketchup but I was afraid to ask. haha Incredible burger, great Scotch selections, NYC is opening again and you need to dine at The Spaniard. read more

I don't know how to put this but.... The green egg scramble is QUITE LITERALLY one of the BEST brunch dishes I've ever had. Bold statement, I know. And I've had a lot of great brunches. But it's that good. It's called a scramble but I feel like it's more of an omelet-salad hybrid - it comes with avocado, kale, feta & chimichurri. Plus the presentation was on point. So let's summarize: I highly recommend the pretty omelet-salad hybrid which has become my new obsession :P They have indoor/outdoor seating - we sat outside. But their interior design has won some awards I believe. They were on Architectural Digest's list of most beautifully designed bars in each state. Here's a little blurb if you're into this stuff like me: "Designed by Home Studios, the aesthetic has a feel of the old, iconic New York (think Keens and P.J. Clarke's). The horseshoe bar is divided in two, with the front more welcoming for a happy-hour crowd, while the back is more intimate, with charming green leather booths.
