I asked if there would be lettuce tomato onion, I was told yes and so I requested light onions... there was not - nor was there any of the LTO. Just the burger patty, bacon, egg, and cheese. Fries were fine and so were the wings. It could have just been my experience, I doubt the burger is normally like that. Oh yes, AND I had the happy hour wedge salad, I really enjoyed that part actually!!! The guy with the man bun who was working the front was also very kind. As an Englishman living in Boulder, I'm always looking for a full English breakfast, as when it's done well, it's one of my favorite things to eat. I can honestly say this is the worst, least authentic English breakfast I've ever had. American bacon (English bacon is different), American sausage (English sausages are different), questionable baked beans with a strange texture (definitely not Heinz). The owners of this restaurant clearly have no idea what an English breakfast should be, so why even bother offering it? Let me start by saying I always want to like the place, but always leave disappointed by the food. The ambiance is plenty pub like and enjoyable although they probably could turn the bright lighting down some to be more cozy. I have always thought the service and wait staff were good enough, no issues there for me If you are a beer drinker they have a good selection. Even the new menu is laid out well for a pub. It's just that the food is best described as bland and underwhelming for great or even good pub food. The fries taste like they are out of a frozen bag and not in a good way. The fish part of the fish and chips is decent but not great. The burgers are just really average. I give it 3 stars for the ambience mostly. The food is not revolting or anything just severely underwhelming. It could be such a good restaurant since the vibe is already cool, honestly it wouldn't take much. Just a better chef and it'd be great. It feels like lazy cooking with not great attention to the details that really bring pub food to life. Been to The Toad many times over many years. I'm somewhat surprised at the negative reviews. I have found the service and food to be outstanding from when Terry owned it until now. My wife and I came for lunch after an appointment nearby. I had a black and tan which was perfectly done. She had a champagne cocktail which she said was very good. We split the Reuben which was very good. Corned beef was excellent. Yes by the end the toast was a little soggy but the flavor and ratio of all the ingredients was spot on and the cheese was perfectly melted. Fries were hot crisp and well done. We will continue to come back. Yes there are a few items that are missed especially The Green Goblin burger but that certainly would not keep me away! read more

Wildly inconsistent. Maceo ordered the fish and chips, while I ordered the beer battered chicken sandwich. The fish was good. The chips were fries, not chips, but they, too, were good. And a generous portion of both. The chicken sandwich was terrible. The roll was exceedingly dry, dense, and tough. Very unpleasant to eat. I mentioned this to the server, but she only shrugged and said, "I guess I can take a couple of dollars off." I replied that I wasn't trying to get a discount, I was trying to convey that the roll wasn't edible. She shrugged again, and that was it. (And paying $16 for a bad sandwich is just as annoying as paying $18 for a bad sandwich.) She did absolutely nothing to solve the problem, nor did she discount the bill. We feel extremely stupid and completely ripped off for paying $18 for that terrible sandwich. In addition to the horrible roll, the chicken was tiny and dry, the tomato scant and underripe, and the avocado nearly absent. So even if the roll had been decent, the sandwich still would have been sadly paltry. Don't know how management, in good conscience, could serve that sandwich to a customer. Shame on them. We were hoping that this might be a new regular restaurant for us. But given the terrible sandwich and the absence of the slightest concern by staff, we will return only when Maceo has a specific taste for fish and chips (fries). The interior is cute in an art-directed pub sort of way. We liked the interior vestibule- every pub we've ever visited in the U.K. has such a vestibule, so it is a nice touch. The beer was nearly room temperature. We understand that in Europe beer is served much warmer than in the U.S., which is fine, but here in the States we like colder beer. Just a thought. read more

One of the few places in Boulder to get a proper pint. Love the beer selection with a balanced mix of British classics (Guinness, Fullers, Old Speckled Hen, etc.) but also American ales/lagers. Solid food and they're now doing brunch. Ultimately, I hope to see more people supporting them as they're one of the few pubs left after Connors. Five stars immediately awarded if they ever put couches (or a community table) by the entrance/bar. It would do sooooo much for the community feel of the place! read more

As I food shop weekly, I've been acutely aware of my food bill increasing & restaurants are struggling with the same problem. The largest price increases were for meat categories: beef and veal prices increased by 9.6 percent, pork prices by 6.3 percent, and poultry prices by 5.6 percent. I'm so disappointed by the new Toad. The fish and chips is now one enormous piece of greasy fried fish, and the whole point of fish and chips is to have smaller pieces you can dip into the tartar sauce. So, having been a long-time customer, I tried again and ordered a burger. I always loved the burgers - they were fresh and juicy. This tasted like a frozen patty - blech. My husband said that one side of his reuben (another old favorite standard) was soggy. I'm so sad about this, as it's been our favorite neighborhood hang for decades! I tried writing them privately about the fish and chips but no acknowledgment. I also really liked the old decor, but that's not the issue. It's the extremely disappointing food. read more

It's an English pub type restaurant so of course I ordered a beer and fish and chips. We split a salad to start but, with only tiny plates it was difficult to serve much at a time. I've been coming here for years. It changed ownership during the height of the pandemic, and I really miss the old menu. I especially miss the California Crescent. The new menu is much more limited and a bit too British for its own good. This time, we ordered burgers, and they didn't ask how we wanted them, so mine was way overcooked. The fries needed salt, and there was none on the table. By the time the waitress came around, we were just done, and the waitress didn't even ask why I didn't eat or want to take home my food. I used to love this place, the fish and chips being my favorite meal on the menu. Last night I went to the hungry toad for the first time in a while and ordered the fish and chips. The fish reeked and I was overwhelmed by the taste it looked like there was a good layer of fish skin still left on. I asked for a new one and the staff were very polite and courteous I very much appreciated this. The next one was better but not by much. I suspect the fish may have turned as i woke up this morning vomiting and am presently under the weather. I have worked in food service before, I can't say for certain that the fish is the cause of my illness but I will be avoiding it in the future. I don't blame the restaurant. We absolutely love the Toad. As long time customers we were a little worried about the refresh but it's turned out well. The burgers are great, with Tom's long gone, this may be Boulder's best burger. Although a bit pricey, happy hour takes a little of the sting, and portions are generous. A few blocks north of Pearl Street, I hoped to experience something less touristy. I did. Loud, barren intersection outside provided suboptimal people watching opportunities. Sadly, Local Color in Boulder, CO is Green. I managed to save a few $ ordering the daily special, a burrito, and a hoppy beer, even though I'm not a big fan of beer, and certainly not hops. First time visiting last night in probably 20 years, this place is definitely a Boulder institution although I have no idea how it's lasted. Highly authentic British experience - from the decorations, to the slow service, to the highly mediocre and generally "meh" food. Best that can be said was that it will mostly fill you up, probably won't make you sick, and isn't the most expensive restaurant in Boulder (though it's far from cheap). The manager said they do not use GrubHub anymore, but GrubHub said the Hungry Toad confirmed the order. So who is lying. On top of everything, the driver received the order and went to the restaurant put they closed. I will not support a business that blames a third party for something. my son and I went there between his flag football games.. just trying to get a lemonade for him and a quick beer for me. we ordered the drinks and then nobody or nothing happened for about ten minutes.. So for me, a five-star review happens when everything about the experience is good. It's a pub, yes...great location away from the downtown scene. The draft selection is outstanding and beers came right away. Outside seating, check. Food: fresh, lovely, well-seasoned, perfect menu choices for what you will look for at a pub. Service also lovely and I think the owner bussed our table so I was able to let him know the food was excellent. We tried the nacho appetizer (fresh chips, real cheese and crisp veggies), salmon salad and a burger. Burger cooked med-rare as requested, yummy fries with skin on, and salad was perfectly salad-y with good combination of ingredients.
