What a jewel! I've lived in the area for almost 4 years now and I can't believe it took me this long to go the Hungry A!! We got the smokie...egg, cheese, and hot sausage and an egg, cheese, and pepper..both on long rolls. DELICIOUS! The owners are gracious and accommodating. I loved the community table inside. Had we more time I would have eaten there. Growing up in a small town, it's nice to know that the small town community feel is still alive and well in places like this. They greet everyone by name. Greasy spoon? Yes. You want the ultimate customer service, local flavor, and feel welcomed as an outsider? Well - this is your place then. Had an AWESOME experience as we ordered from the main counter and then sat down to have the food delivered to us. Crazy busy but employees continually checking on you and making you feel at home. All I needed was a newspaper and pair of slippers. I had a smokie (hot sausage - or your choice of meat), hot peppers and onions omelet with a side buttered bagel. I don't drink hot coffee 98% of the time but felt compelled with the amazing customer service as the girls exclaimed "We have a brand new fresh pot just for you" - after realizing I was a non-local. Son had a grilled meatball and provolone sub (unsure why he skipped on the breakfast side of menu) and he loved it. The bread had a nice char and was a perfect start to our 4 hour ride through the mountains to Johnstown. If I'm even sniffing near Springfield again - I will be visiting this family owned establishment as it's the same family for over 40+ years. PS - cash only. And I had to leave the restaurant for 15 minutes to find a bank (ATM next door broken at the sketchy bodega) but the owners trusted me. I paid that trust forward. Came here for breakfast for the first time today after reading all these great reviews. We were greeted instantly and had a very lovely conversation with the owner and his wife. Great people!! They definitely welcomed us, and for that reason (along with the delicious breakfast sandwich), we'll be regulars there in no time! The breakfast sandwich was pretty big, but I actually finished all of it. It was too good to waste. The owner told us he personally slices the pork rolls thinly to make it easier to eat, and boy was he right! When is the last time you were blown away by amazing customer service? Let me tell you about my experience at The Hungry A. This was my first visit to The Hungry A. I was using Yelp to look for someplace to eat and see if there was anything interesting that I haven't been to yet. This was the only place that popped up with a 4 star rating in the area. Why haven't I been here before? I feel like I've seen the name before. Probably drove by it hundreds of times. I popped the address into my GPS and headed on over. It is located in the same parking lot as the bowling alley, to the left. You can see the writing on the wall jumping out. I now remember seeing this place before. Still not sure why I never stopped in. There was plenty of parking, thanks to the bowling alley. I went inside and saw what was the style of something that has been around for a long time. I later learned that it has been there for almost 53 years. There isn't much to the place. As soon as you walk in there are a few fridges that they use for storage and for drinks on the left. The counter is to the right, which is full of people all working together to make the orders. There is a small stove and all of the cooking is done in the open. If you walk straight back you still see a bunch of stools and long tables. Old school style. Everyone pretty much shares a seating area. Pull up a stool and enjoy your food! They are a breakfast and lunch location. Burgers, steak sandwiches, hoagies, hotdogs, etc. I ordered myself a bagel with egg, cheese and bacon, as well as an egg sandwich on a long roll with sweet peppers, mushrooms, american cheese and mayo. Everything tasted just as I expected. Delicious! The roll was so soft and fresh. The sandwich was hot. Everything was good! The food alone would give this place a good rating, but let me explain why my mind was blown. I've never been here before. When I got there they were pretty busy. I took my time to learn their menu and made my decision. Right after I placed my order I looked around and noticed that there was no credit card machine. I asked them if they accepted credit cards there and they said no. I was really disappointed. I don't carry cash on me normally. They told me there was an ATM next door, but I did not have my debt card with me. I was bummed. I apologized and told them to cancel my order. The lady behind the counter seemed as though she felt bad for me. She yelled over to a guy named Bruce as I was walking out of the store. While walking out to my car, I heard a guy call over to me. It was the same person the lady was talking to. He asked me to please come on back into the store and let him cook my order for me. He said that he hates to see people hungry and told me that I could pay him back next time I was in the neighborhood. Let me say this again. I was a complete stranger. I was never in his store. This man, who I learned was Bruce the owner, came up to me, a person that he has never seen before and offered to cook my meal for me and let me come back another time to pay. I told him that I was rarely in that area and he said that is fine and to just come back whenever... MY MIND WAS ABSOLUTELY BLOWN! I didn't even know what to say. I felt my eyes starting to tear up a bit as I was so touched by what this person offered. It is so refreshing to experience something like this these days. I took him up on his offer, and he told me about the place. The lady behind the counter was his wife. His father owned it before him, and they always believed in having great customer service. He opened up the register and pulled out a list of names of people that he did the same thing for. I watched as he interacted with his other customers. He knew every person's name, and seemed to make them feel like the most important person in the room when he spoke to them. Young and old, he made everyone feel special and appreciated. He had a witty line for people after he rung them up as they were leaving. I remember hearing him tell one of his regulars that he was giving him a discount for being so handsome. I ran out to my car as they were preparing my food to see if I had any spare change or money in there. Luckily I found that I had just enough to cover my order, as I did not want to leave owing this kind man any money. At the end he thanked me for coming in and he said something to me that was awesome: "Will you do me a small favor? Have a GREAT day." Wow! I got the chills and I told him how incredible my experience was. Even though he has probably said that line over and over again to so many others, I felt that he said it for the first time ever when he said it to me, and more importantly I felt that he meant every word of it. The world needs more people like Bruce. It was a true blessing to experience what I did with him today. Thank you, Bruce. You made such an impression on me. Cozy spot where everybody talks to everybody while you eat. Fast service and the owners are the greatest. She actually carried my bag to my car as I was a bit overloaded with goodies. Hello. I visited this place on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. It was Election Day. My first time here and I was greeted immediately. I'm not a celebrity, but here you are treated like one. I asked for a menu and I decided to order the turkey club salad. The servers explained how it would look and how much it was and what the order entailed. I didn't wait long and when my order was ready, I received turkey and tomatoes with bacon on a bed of lettuce. Everything was cut up nicely and served well. I decided on french dressing as my choice of dressing. The owner, Bruce asked if I were eating in and I opted for take-out. I will eat there another time. They have stools and tables that you can eat from. This place is a rare find. I have passed it so many times and finally decided to stop. Visit here and you will not be dissatisfied. read more

This place is mental! The kids are all working right after coming back from the Covid-19 hotspot(Jersey Shore!!) No masks when making the food ether. My husband and I were waiting for our food and listened to them talk about the kids that were on vacation and coming back the following week, made me think about where the kids there at the moment have been and made me uncomfortable, 1. not knowing where they have been 2. NOT WEARING A MASK!!! We left without our sandwiches and not going back. Such a shame because I heard good things about the place but it seems to be ran by idiots. read more

As much as I love their food, I can't overlook the fact that they are not following the rules of COVID in state of pennsylvania. None of the owners or cooks were wearing masks when I went to pick up my sandwich. In a small space that is poorly ventilated, I can't help but remove this business from my list of go-tos. They are putting the community at risk by cooking food with no protection from their droplets, and wearing no mask with customers in the store. To top it all off, the owner gives a nice creepy greeting of "what a nice looking girl" or "i was waiting for a good looking girl to walk in" on every single occasion, without fail. What an absolutely wonderful place! Great service and great food in a no nonsense atmosphere. My girlfriend and I were visiting from out of town and we came across the Hungry A. Upon walking in we were immediately greeted by the owner and he took time to explain the menu and even made suggestions on what to order. It was honestly some of the best service I have ever received. The food was awesome. I ordered the steak and egg sandwich on the Italian roll. Oh my! It was fantastic! It's basically a delicious cheesesteak with egg in it. The bread was perfect with just the right textures and flavors. I had some of the French toast as well and it was very good. I ordered a breakfast sandwich that contained the following: hoagie roll, pork roll, 3 eggs and cheese. It would be the first thing I ate all day so therefore I was really hungry. I could have cared less about the decor of the place but it was a little cool to sit on the little bar stools and eat your food. It took about 5 minutes and the lady brought it out to me (you pay after you eat). I didn't know how much it cost but I assumed it would be reasonable considering the location and the building. The food was excellent as well as the sandwich. However, I wasn't quite convinced that they put 3 eggs into my sandwich as it appeared a little light. In my experience 3 eggs and cheese with pork roll is a bit heavier. Anyway, I commented to one of the ladies that worked there that I really enjoyed the food and I would be back again. This was after she asked me how I liked the food. I commented that there are few good places to get breakfast and brunch in Delaware County and that the one deli I used to go to in Springfield was good but charged too much. I then exclaimed that this sandwhich would cost about $6 at that deli (Sleepy Hollow Deli). So I was extremely surprised when one of the ladies rung up my order and it came to $5.83. I couldn't believe the irony! Paying almost $6 for a breakfast sandwhich is WAY too high, especially in Delaware County! It was very good, but I cannot confirm that I will be back again. As an O'Hara grad I think the Hungry A has been there since the dawn of time. I used to live right behind it and would go there to get a sausage, egg & cheese. DELISHIOUS! I can't really say anything about anything else at the place because that sandwich is so good I never order anything else! Now that I've moved, I'll still drive 20min just to get one on a lazy morning. The guy and his wife who own the joint are really nice people. I can't say enough good things about the place. This is the best breakfast sandwich spot I have found in all my years of having breakfast out. Bacon fat from the cooked bacon which is bottomless is used to cook the egss and the home fries. The service is friendly beyond measure and if you are in more than Twice they will know your name by your third visit. The open early. The milkshakes are made with real ice cream, the eggs are fresh, the honey mustard chicken is great and they do make special orders for sandwiches. Parking is easy and access to highway is good. The "A" is one of my rave fave spots in Delco. Owned and operated by the same family for over 40 years, it is a beloved local favorite. I love the fab breakfast sandwiches, but go for the entire menu of classic comfort favoreites, go for the retro vibe, go for the warm welcome of ever-present owners Bruce and Mickey, go for the cool centrally-sited and communal seating table that makes you feel like your sitting down with family. This place reminds me of Le Pain Quotidienne in NYC at 8th St. and Fifth, just north of Wash Sq. Always an interesting conversation with someone and a fun time. The food is great, the prices are reasonable and you'll love the vintage prints and ephemera on the walls. I am definitely coming here more often! read more

I used to live right behind this place, so I tried it for breakfast sandwiches out of convenience and on a whim... still might be the best pork roll, egg & cheese I've ever had. Also came on a long roll, which changed the way I saw breakfast sandwiches forever. I love diners especially if they have been in business for a while and this place is over 50 years old! The food is a reasonable price as well. I got a breakfast sandwich on a roll & let me just say that this was the softest roll I've ever had when eating a breakfast sandwich they must have been delivered today! I didn't have cash on me but Bruce was kind enough to let me put it on credit until next time. People love excellent customer service & I got it today. This place gives you the at home feeling like you are always welcome. Bruce knew his customers by first name which means they come frequently. All you need to do is provide excellent service, don't price like your the first person to make a cheesesteak, and make really, really good food.
