This little coffee shop is amazing! Definitely has that hometown feel. Everyone was super friendly. The blueberry scones were the best I've ever had. They were full of fresh blueberries and nice and fluffy. My latte was perfect as well. Usually when I ask for 1/2 sweet it's too sweet or not sweet enough but it was made to perfection. Hobbs is a neat café, and on the bigger side. I found this place on my recent summer café obsession where my wife and I have been searching for a new place for coffee every week to two weeks. We have been pleasantly surprised to find a great variety and way more than we thought after moving here from Philly several years ago, and Hobbs certainly doesn't disappoint. While I will say that their espresso is not the absolute best I have had in Delco, their drinks are top notch, and are brewed to perfection; shots pulled perfectly and crafted exactly as asked. I have had a cappuccino on each occasion here, and while each barista has their own very slight variation on the classic drink, it is delicious every single time, regardless of who is steaming the milk. What I have found to be even more of a draw is the people who work here and their commitment to great service, as well as their ability to remember who comes in, even if it's only been once or twice, as after only a single visit, we were remembered weeks later by those behind the counter. Not a small feat when you have hundreds of patrons daily. However, despite the coffee, the service, the fact that it's on a corner in cute little Swarthmore, I have to talk about the soup! First, let me say that I am a soup freak. Like insane for soup. I would eat soup for every meal of every day, regardless of season, and be completely content....no....extremely happy for the rest of my life. Hobbs has soup. Good freakin' soup. They have soup for breakfast, even. Which is fine with me. What's more, is that it is completely obvious that their soup is homemade on-premises, and someone who works there loves soup just as much as I do, and is pouring their heart and soul into the pots of soup like Beethoven did to his original 11 symphonies, or with the emotion felt from the paintings towards the end of Van Gogh's career. These are masterpieces of chopped vegetables, stewed with broth from scratch........and they rotate so frequently I cannot keep up. It is hopeless for me to even try, despite the fact that I want to try every single soup one, because I don't live next door. Otherwise I would be in here every day to check on the soup for the day and.get it piping hot. One day soon, I will find out who their soup maestro is and give them their due credit. I have been here about ten times to meet people and generally like the coffee and the place. That said, the last two times I've been there the bagels have been pretty terrible. The service is excellent, and pre-pandemic, they had a great amount of quality options. Present-pandemic, there are not so many great options, but their food is quality. I tried their local kind of "news" of hard to order Divine's pizza as you order it through Instagram or a different phone number, but you pick it up at Hobbs itself. Definitely a good option in Swarthmore town. The mocha was delicious. The breakfast sandwiches (pork rolls) were tasty but not spectacular. The breakfast burrito was probably the best part. The staff was very nice. There's parking in town but very limited on the weekend due to the farmers market. I'm posting a picture of the current menu because I couldn't find it anywhere online. Just amending my review as I've been there a few times... the above still holds true but I took away one star because the last three times we've gone, the breakfast sandwiches and burritos have been burned. It is what it is at Hobbs. In coming here a few times a year since 2010 I've come to accept their shortcomings because they are local and I feel good about supporting a mom and pop. And mostly just because it's convenient. It would garner an additional star if they limited the amount of time they allow students to take up tables. there have been many when I saw the same people in the same seats 4 hours later when I walked by. Sometimes they sit there longer. Today it's mobbed and no empty seats and one guy has an entire four top with just his laptop on the table. It would also be nice if they by default gave you a spoon when you ordered tea so you can squeeze the teabag. They do have them because when you Go back to the counter and ask, they give you one. It would be really nice if the blonde haired girl behind the counter making food pulled her waist length hair back while making people's food. It swings all over the place. And she's always touching her hair and pulling it back. That's just gross! My final rent is that it would be nice if they ever got my order correct. I honestly don't think in eight years coming here they have. Today my ordered over easy eggs came out scrambled. I didn't send it back because they are very busy. There just never seems to be any management here. Ending on a high note - you can't beat their bacon. It's always perfect. read more

Stopped by for breakfast on a flying visit to town, and all I can say is, I wish they'd had Hobbs in the ville when I was a student here. We got excellent, simple breakfast sandwiches and decent coffee fast, and had space to spread out a little in the seats in the front window. We thought Vicky's would be open on Labor Day (seriously, I could've sworn I read that sign at least twice), but when it wasn't, and we didn't want the Dunkin' Donuts that the kids were craving, we stopped into Hobbs for coffee and bagel sandwiches. I ordered a salmon and cream cheese bagel, a chorizo and egg bagel, a decaf coffee, and an herbal chai. I'd already collected my coffee and doctored it when I was informed by the staff that it was regular, but they promptly gave me a decaf. Thank goodness I hadn't drunk it yet! The water for the chai was PIPING hot! I had to wait quite a while for it to cool enough to drink. The bagel sandwiches were good - nicely toasted bagels, generous portions of toppings. I didn't realize that the chorizo would be the dried kind (I'm accustomed to the ground kind) so the texture was a bit off for me, but the flavor was good. This is the coffee shop from my dreams. It is large and roomy, but still exudes coziness. Hobbs serves as a host to college students and business professionals alike. There is always plenty of seating and, just as important, plenty of outlets. The WiFi is quick and easy to connect making Hobbs a great spot to set up for an hour or so. In addition to having a great coffee shop environment, the food is also amazing. There is a large selection of $5 bagel sandwiches including my personal favorite--smoked salmon and cream cheese. $5 is an incredible deal for this as the salmon tastes fresh and the bagel is always perfectly toasted. There are a variety of other sandwiches and salads with options to meet unique dietary needs. I love that they have more than just baked goods! The vast food selection is what makes Hobbs so unique. Aside from the food, the coffee is pretty great too. I always get a latte with almond milk that is served in a large mug. I haven't tried any other drinks but I plan to soon! read more

I came here recently because I needed to get some work done remotely, and I always enjoy working out of a coffee shop for some reason whenever I can. Bottom line is that it is pretty good here. I've always enjoyed the coffee. But it's not an overall great shop. First pet peeve is that they don't serve straight iced coffee. If I ask, they always say that they can make an iced Americano instead. Well that's fine and dandy. And it's pretty good if you doctor it up right. But I kind of wish they had more options. Plus, I had a muffin here last time. It was quite good, but it tasted familiar. Then I went back to the mens room and saw all of the cartons of BJ's baked goods in the back. Now, I can't expect them to bake goods on site. But they can find a better local provider than BJ's for a place like this, can't they? At this point I might as well go to Panera instead. Let's just say that in this kind of atmosphere, I can find plenty of coffee shops that serve more options as well as more local goods. read more

I like to think of this place as a panera sans the franchise aspect. It is a local coffee shop that employs local artists to decorate its walls, and uses great quality ingredients in their soups, sandwiches, and coffees. The food is consistently good. The last time I was there, I ordered a mixed greens salad and a grilled eggplant & pesto sandwich with my usual soy chai. Normal salad, decent sandwich, and amazing chai. There is plenty of variety in their menu, and the items taste great for the price. The location is excellent, since it is less than 1 minute from the train station, and about 5 minutes for students on Swarthmore's campus by foot. Walked in and was pleasantly surprised to see so much seating and there were spots open. Yay! Ordered the tomato, pesto, mozzarella bagel and a latte. Ordered it for there so was a little bummed the latte was in a to-go cup, I enjoy my coffee more at a local spot in a mug. It was a good latte tho. The bagel sammie was great on flavor. The tomato was perfectly ripe and the pesto was delicious and garlicy. I do wish the bagel was a little toasted to soften up the moz. Free Wifi, yay. There were outlets all around so that was a huge plus as well. As a reviewer had mentioned before, it's not the cleanest but it is a little eclectic so that may be adding to that feel as well. Hobbs is exactly what you would expect from an independent coffee shop on the edge of a liberal arts campus in the Philly area: a little small, pretty dark, but really really good! From what I can see Hobbs offers incredible value. Their lattes are on par with Center City's best coffee places. My favorite part is the bagel sandwich specials. So far I've had a #4 (pesto, mozzarella and tomato) and #5 (apple and brie) and been extremely happy with both. A large latte and one of their bagel sandwich runs you $7.50 which is perfect because I get some quarters to pay for the meter outside (1 quarter gives you an hour). Finally, got to love all the different mugs they offer to their patrons- really adds a fun flair. Honestly have only had food there once, a bagel with a clump of cheese so thick it was overwhelming, and I forget what else. They used to give you stoneware mugs or cups but now they have only been using paper. I despise drinking coffee from a paper cup when I'm sitting and trying to relax. And it's mostly crowded by college students and others, sitting along the wall alone on their laptops. If it's primarily for students, great. I love having Hobbs in our sweet town of Swarthmore. Though I don't get in to enjoy their space and food as often as I'd like, their coffee is always delicious and hot (I am a cafe au lait fan) and their menu is always inspired and fresh. Sometimes there is confusion on what order is yours as they call out the item ordered as they come up, maybe a number system should be employed, but in a way it also adds a homey and relaxed atmosphere. I liked Hobbs the first couple of times I tried it out... unique drinks (tea sodas, oh my!) and delicious egg sandwiches. However, when it comes to consistency - don't count on Hobbs! The quality of the food varies by day - and so do the prices! My friend and I have decided to no longer eat here based on the following: 1) Every time we order something the price is drastically different - by a few dollars. 2) The same item (scrambled eggs) can be delicious one day, and greasy and unappetizing the next day. Whyyyyy? Not sure, but in order to satisfy customers, you really need some kind of consistency..... Until then, I'll go get a snack at the co-op. read more

I've been to this cafe twice and had an overall good experience! I'm a Chai Tea Latter lover, and their Chai Tea Latter is pretty good. They also have a good selection of bagel sandwiches for good prices. Of course, the cafe is seems to be filled with college students since it's right across Swarthmore college, but it's a great atmosphere. We recently installed a new coin operated coffee machine at work (Pathmark). You put your 50 cents in and pick from a number of impressive options and the machine grinds whole coffee beans into a hot cup of coffee. Because of this, I've been able to try some of the more exotic coffee choices (espresso, cappuccino, macchiato, etc.) that I either don't have the patience for or am too embarrassed to pronounce at coffee shops. It's especially interesting for me because I maintenance the machine and I know that there are only 3 ingredients involved in running it; coffee beans, powdered cocoa and powdered milk This brings me to Hobbs. I've been coming here frequently, mostly on Tuesdays while waiting for my wash at the nearby laundromat. Even though the food options always look great, I usually just get coffee. Today, however, armed with a wider palate of coffee styles and having YouTubed the correct way to pronounce it, I ordered a macchiato. It's safe to say that the lovely girl that prepared my drink did more than my vending machine does to make my coffee, and it showed. It was delicious and may have ruined me to my usual, Skynet made drinks but oh well. A once a week treat is Ok in my book. Well done again Hobbs! read more

This review is coming a little late. On the day of my graduation, I mosied over to Hobbs with my famz for lunch. Now, as a local student, Hobbs is well known and a big deal for certain circles. Namely, circles that can afford to pay ridiculous prices for mediocre food, slow service and an ambience of spoiled rich kids. There were three orders placed (two of my folks split a dish). It took forty minutes to get the meals, all of which were some variation of eggs, toast and maybe meat; I believe all of these really basic breakfast-y kinds of things cost at least 8$ a pop. Drinks came out only after ten minutes. The food was filling but certainly not better than a diner's. As someone who works in a cafe, I really do understand that things don't happen magically in three seconds, but uh there's a Dunkin Donuts across the street. It's better than Hobbs. read more
