SIMI VALLEY! I know, I know, why was I here? I was working out here just temporarily, and wasn't into "mall food," so I kept ordering food from THIS place. Not a lot of options if you're vegetarian, but I made due with their: -tuna sandwich -avocado sandwich -fries -wet fries -onion rings -potato salad -orange bang and their -grilled cheese I've been to maybe 2 other Hat locations, but this one is one of the biggest, and cleanest. Its indoors and never too busy. So, if you're around one of these, DO stop by. I remember when I wasn't vegetarian, and liking the Pastrami Dip. Can't remember details, but I don't think I've ever had ill feelings towards this place. The one in Alhambra/San Gabriel on Garfield and Valley is located in a good area, its small, but looks like its been there for ages - SO cute. read more

Absolutely ridiculous! The pastrami is definitely good here. And hands down some of the best chili cheese fries topped with pastrami too! The chili pastrami fries are enough for 5+ people. Crazy! Great spot with great service!!! My parents used to come here once a week and I'd tag along with them on occasion. I was out here with a friend the other day and we decided to pop in. Go with a huge appetite!! My boyfriend told me they have the best chili cheese fries here so that's what he was ordering. I felt it wouldn't be enough so I ordered a burger too. HOLY COW. Biggest chili cheese fries I've ever seen! We topped them with pastrami and it was definitely enough for 2. Hands down, best chili fries I've ever had- worth every dollar! Yes! Yes! In the face! This is the only place my old high school friend and I go to eat and destroy our intestines!!! Steak sandwich, pastrami, double chili burger..... I hate that there's not one here in San Francisco!!! Pastrami is the best, no joke. They make a mean pastrami sandwich, loaded with meat! If I feel like no meat, load up with the avocado sandwich. Trust me, if you love avocados, YOU WILL BE SATISFIED!!! They put so much avocados in there and it's fresh, not that pre-made disgusting junk, real avocados!!! The sides are one of the best here. Fries, (wet or chili fries) and onions rings..... to this day no matter how hungry my friend and I are, we can never finish it... EVER!!! I mean look at the pictures!! They are humongous!!! For the simple meat-eater looking for an easy pastrami deli-esque meal. The Hat is one of my favorite places to get pastrami. Usually a few bucks less than other standalone establishments that serve pastrami, The Hat just takes the cake in simple, fast, and GOOD. Definitely not the best, but it's a simple way to add whatever you want on your pastrami dip sandwich. Located right after you order is a row of condiments, from sweet mustard to horseradish, that you can put on your meal if desired. I also strongly recommend the pastrami chili cheese fries if you're looking to indulge in something you may never want to get again, but will come back to order anyway. read more

After wondering and wondering about what the heck is an avocado sandwich, I tried it. It's pretty tasty if you like avocado/guac. It's pretty big so you can have 2 portions and they slice it down the middle for you. But I was so hungry I devoured the whole thing! Basically it's like a BLT but without the bacon.... your choice of bread, little mayo, little lettuce, tomato, and like an inch layer of smashed avocado. Let me tell you, it hit the spot!!!! The Hat is the best that fast food gets, folks. The pastrami dip is perfect. The onion rings are perfect, even if their grease will eventually weaken their bag so much that it will tear. The Orange Bang drink is perfect. There are plenty of other items on the menu as well -- sandwiches and burgers, a variety of sides, etc, but I always stick with the pastrami dip. There's just no reason to change. This particular location is often quite busy, yet I've never had an issue with an incorrect order. Service is fast and friendly. One con: the interior seating is not very comfortable, so consider taking your order to go or use the drive through. read more

Good ol' Simi Valley and it's lackluster choices of places to eat. In my younger years, I thought The Hat was solely a Simi Valley thing. It wasn't until about high school that I ventured out into the 626 and discovered two more locations, within a few streets of each other. Anyways, I've always been a big fan of The Hat. It's nothing special, just some good eating at some decent prices. The fact that they serve up Orange Bang just sweetens the deal (literally!). Everything is pretty standard fare, I'd recommend that you get the pastrami dip if you've never eaten here before. If you're feeling adventurous, get the onion rings with a side of gravy. Sounds weird, but trust me on that one. Remember never to order a chili cheese fries for each person, just get one to share. I will always hold a special place in my heart for The Hat...but only my Simi Valley one. read more

I'm big fan of their Famous Pastrami Dip Sandwich. It's an over flowing pile of thinly sliced delicious pastrami which is nearly impossible to contain between the french bread it is on. The chili cheese fries are a mountain of greasy cheesy deliciousness. I highly recommend them... But last and certainly not least are the onion rings... probably one of the best places for onion rings that I have ever discovered. They are so crispy and the onions are cut just right. Oh yeah.. and did I mention they give you a giant bag full of them? But the other items I can't vouch for I had some of their plain sandwiches and their roast beef dip... both of which were disappointing in comparison.. at least these three will take you to food heaven.. or at least a food coma read more

My husband and I eat here often. The Pastrami burgers are so delicious. I don't recommend the onion rings necessarily because there isn't much to them, mostly breading. But the gravy fries are delicious! The portion sizes here are amazingly out of control. Any side is easily suited for 2 adults to share. Definitely a favorite restaurant! read more

Perhaps none of the Simi valley customers have never had a true Hat Pastrami dip from Alhambra or Pasadena. So you have nothing to compare it to. 1. its a dip it should be dripping in sauce(not at the simi location) 2. it should be brimming over with large slices of pastrami( in simi only tiny slivers on the sandwich) in fact although I ordered a sandwich early in the day I thought I got the scrapings from the day before. They are a fantastic motivator when I'm on a long-distance run and need to encourage myself up those hills. I work for L.A. county and drive through-out it daily and visit various The Hat locations and love the sandwiches and chili fries. However this was my first time to the Simi Valley location and although the food was just as good as the others, the service here was shockingly disappointing. There were three of us and although we were keeping to ourselves, a few workers made some very negative and disparaging homophobic comments about us in Spanish and in a loud enough volume. A couple of us are of the LGBT community and although we are all Hispanic, we must not have looked it because it didn't keep them from saying some nasty things. Although the manager and some of the other employees did not participate directly, there was also no attempt made to dissuade the dialogue. Had it not been for the fact that we could watch them prepare our food, I would have been worried about that as well. We definitely won't be coming here again and I would not recommend this location to any of the LGBT community. read more

It's a good thing that The Hat is a good 30 minute drive from my home because this place is soooo good, yet soooo bad for the waistline. They're famous for their pastrami dip and for good reason.... it's delish and they literally load the bun with tons of pastrami. The only downside is that the bun gets soggy after sitting awhile. The chili cheese fries with avocado are out of this world. Fries cooked to perfection, creamy hot chili, cheese ooozing all over and cool avocado on top brings it all together perfectly. The Hat is one of those special places where you can indulge in huge portions of delicious, but greasy and unhealthy, artery-clogging food at a low price. They are known for their pastrami dip ($6.99) and it does not disappoint. Kinda reminds me of when Shaggy and Scooby would stack their sandwiches up high, except at the Hat it's all pastrami. And the pastrami is tasty. Their basic hamburger ($2.89) is great too. The menu items look very interesting because they use sexy words like "gravy", "chili", or "au jus". But what really does it for me is the pastrami hamburger ($6.99). It's basically their hamburger plus that aforementioned stack of pastrami in it. Sinfully delicious, and almost deadly. The portions for their side order of fries or onion rings are huge as well. The onion rings were so crispy that we had a buttermilk ranch bukkake on them. I barely even touched the fries and side of chili cheese. Next time I go here, I am not ordering sides because I can't hang. One must be careful when eating here, because when I looked around at other customers, they were all on the heavy side. No joke. I could hear the voice in my head saying, "That could be you if you keep eating at The Hat". This particular location (there are only 10 in SoCal) has two one-person bathrooms, so you may risk a wait in line or the aroma left by a previous patron. Pastrami Sandwich. If you're at The Hat, then you probably are there for the Pastrami, which is WONDERFUL. You get a ton of pastrami on your sandwich, which is moist and extremely flavorful, as well as a good yellow mustard (remember to tell them to leave off those nasty pickles). The fries here are great, and the portion of fries you are served is quite large. I have tried their burgers, as well as their tri tip sandwiches, and chicken sandwiches. im not a meat eater, especially hamburgers but the cheeseburger here is pretty good: lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and special sauce. i also tried the orange bang which was delicious (just like a creamsicle or a 50/50 bar). the chili cheese fries are maaaasssssssive, btw. if two people wanted to share it for dinner, they MIGHT be able to finish that thing. but i dunno... its a beast. surprisingly clean for a fast food place. oh and their website has a pretty catchy jingle (so cute how they make up their own song... just like titos!). read more

I love the hat! Hands down, best pastrami sandwich you will ever have. I never order anything else but the pastrami sandwich and a side of fries, sometimes with a side of chili. Tips: I do not recommend getting it to go. It tastes much much better if you eat it right away. If you take the sandwich home it can get soggy pretty fast. And the fries are also only good if they are quite hot. The fries are a little bland, nothing to write home about.. but they are cheap for the huge portion you get. I recently had a pastrami sandwich from Bay Cities in Santa Monica and it was so tiny that I said, "The pastrami in this sandwich could have fallen out of a sandwich from the Hat and you wouldn't even notice." The food is always good, so this is not about the food. Over the holidays my wife and I witnessed something rather disturbing. A man had come into The Hat to fill out a job application. There was a sign outside saying"applications being accepted". The person who was the manager scowled at this person, told them there were no openings and took down the sign. The manager and all the staff were Hispanic. The potential candidate for employment was white. Is this reverse discrimination? This really was disturbing and I have always liked eating at The Hat.
