I hope people come and support this fairly new, small place behind Mcdonalds off Tapo St. I like to check out reviews before I go anywhere, but im glad I didnt read too much into the handful of bad reviews peppered in between these mostly glowing reviews before I had my amazing tender smokey perfect pork ribs, fluffy decadent Mac and cheese and finely chopped red cabbage cole slaw. Im a dude that will specifically search bad reviews, cause those are often more interesting to read. I feel like the handful of bad reviews this spot gets is either from local competition, some people that wish they opened their own joint or from people who would rather have someone lie to them about any situation more serious than an uncomfortable trip to the end of their own driveway I didnt know anything about this place, the owner, or anything else. Still dont really. Just saw it pop up in a Google search for ribs, and was really wanting ribs today. Don't eat out too often tbh, but have been seeking ribs a bit ever since visiting family in Alabama a couple times the past few years. I had a feeling about this place and I was right. The owner was there when I went in. He seems like a very real dude who takes pride in what he does. In this case food. Sometimes a very real dude like that isnt going to give you some real smooth type customer service experience. My customer service was great. Just saying I could see how it could go different if there was a rush or something. Doesn't take away from the clean presentation of this no nonsense establishment and the very high quality of the food. I hope this place ends up with enough customers so they can pay someone to smile and nod to anyone that cant appreciate that this is a real authentic homegrown kind of place that, frankly, kicks the crap out of most places that wouldnt have the time or energy to put the level of detail I had in my food. Update: Their brisket is sooooo good. Man! Seasoned to perfection- melt in your mouth. They also have hot links. The bbq sauce is also really good! I've been coming since they opened and see how they have improved and responded to their customers and I like that. They put seats for waiting and it looks like they're even expanding to give customers a dine in option. I like this place and the people behind the counter are always cool- I think they are doing a good job running the business as a small shop- especially in picky Simi Valley. Great flavor, nice smoke but not overpowering. I love the pickles and the potato salad was good The bad, the beef ribs were trash. The meat was dry, tough and hard. Total rookie move by me. Got pics of the exterior got pics of the interior. Took the food home and completely fumbled at the goal line, no food pics. The good news is, I think I'll be back at some point so I'll update my review with food pics. The restaurant is take out only. I recommend calling ahead so you don't have to wait. That's what I did and I didn't have to wait. I think the earlier you get food the more likely you are to have the full menu at your disposal. They were basically out of desserts by 5p on a Saturday. But honest I didn't come for the dessert. I came for the meat and meat is what I got. I ordered a rack of baby back ribs. They were flavorful and very meaty. It wasn't a chilis size rack it was more of a Fred flintstone size rack. I'm exaggerating but you get it. I also ordered a 1/4 lb of brisket. It wasn't juicy and fatty. Not sure if they offer a lean cut. But if juice is what you're are looking for this would deliver. The sides I got were potato salad = good, mac and cheese = slightly better than good, baked beans = not good. The baked beans were so tomato heavy. Maybe that's a Tex mex baked bean and if so I don't need it. They tasted as if there was no brown sugar or sweetening agent in them at all. Again maybe it is just a preference thing. I would not order them again. The ribs were tender and the sauce was very nice. It was a sweet sauce which I love so if that's your bag get ready to enjoy. Marvin the owner knows how to make anyone come back for more! Amazing BBQ Sampler with 2-sides. The Sides, potato salad was on point, with red russet potatoes and very savory. The coleslaw was very bland and dry but if you add balsamic vinegar to it, it was pretty good, but my southern taste buds are picky when it comes to that stuff. The MEATS! The brisket, pulled pork, chicken breast, tri-tip, pork-ribs, and Smoked Sausage was great and tender all around! The provided tangy barbecue sauce just made it more epic!! If they add cornbread to these platters, it would just make these much more irresistible! From the beginning I said that this is The BEST BBQ in Simi and even surrounding cities. And until now I am convinced that there is no others. I had the famous Dino ribs again remember always best to call ahead and reserve it since you never know when are they gonna be running out. To be honest, the brisket was still pretty darned good, a bit dry, but okay, which is a big part of the rating being where it is. The level of customer service was substandard, who answers their business phone with "yeah?" Sounding like its a bother to speak with a customer. The woman behind the counter must have been a new hire, she had no answers for any questions being asked, prices or menu item information, either for us or the other patrons, not the best representation really. I finally got to try the beef ribs and they looked NOTHING like the pictures. Hardly any meat on either of them, just disappointing. Their sides were just as disagreeable, no flavor to the dry mac n cheese, and I have no idea what happened to the baked beans, but they were pretty tasteless too. They have been better on prior visits, next time go the dollar store and get a can from there, they would be better beans. Considering the final price of about $80 with tip, I'd think they might have tried a bit harder. Like another review stated, the BBQ Sauce was the best part of that meal. Wanted to check this spot out after seeing some pics here in Yelp. This is a take out only spot, I would prefer the option on done in or take out, but not a deal breaker, the food tastes the same either way. The shop itself is what you would expect for take out only, small store front, walk in to a counter to order from, grab you food and go. Nothing fancy, just focusing on putting out good BBQ. The girl working behind the counter was friendly and got my order out quickly, she said maybe 7 minutes or so, but she was out with my order in less than five. Great service. Now to the food, I order the brisket combo that comes with two sides, I got baked beans and Mac & cheese, I did not realize a drink as well, bonus. Out the door just over $20, which I did not think was bad for BBQ. The brisket had a nice flavor to it, a bit of fat, but not too much. I really liked the sauce, a tiny bit of spice and a nice flavor profile. The baked beans were also very good, large beans in a peppery sauce, full of flavor. It also came with a few of their pickles, which I really loved those, need to get a side of them next time. What Fell short for me was the Mac & cheese, not much flavor and seemed a bit over done. I added some Tabasco to it to give it some zing, but I would not order that side again, something they should work on. I was debating between the Mac salad and this and I picked the wrong one. The ribs here are absolutely phenomenal! They are tender, fall off the bone, & are sooo delicious! As someone who was raised in Alabama, southern style BBQ is hard to come by in California. The only reason I'm giving four stars is because their sides don't have much flavor. The mac & cheese definitely needs a roux so the cheese sticks on the noodles & adds more of a full bodied flavor. Also I know the "if you need BBQ sauce I didn't cook my meat well enough" is big in the south, but it's a personal preference, as I love some good BBQ sauce!! Super awesome and friendly staff who knows about BBQ and customer service. Went in a few weeks ago and was excited to just listen to them talk about meet! I liked the beef ribs quite a bit, and the brisket was clearly well prepared and very supple. They were out of pork ribs when I came, but I will need to be back to try those and the tri tip! The thing that I feel they could improve a little bit on are the sides. If I could give this place negative stars I would! This place simply isn't it. I saw a few food influencers on Instagram talk about how good this place was which made my experience even more disappointing. I should have known better! I order the brisket combo with a side of pickles and coleslaw and my girlfriend got the tri-tip with macaroni salad and pickles. I also wanted to try the beef ribs so I got one on the side. As we are sitting down waiting, the guy in the bandana who took our order said that they had a big order call in so ourselves and two other people who ordered would have to wait. 45 min. - 1 hour later we are still sitting while the people who ordered after us got their food and left. They finally bring out the big order and continue laughing and talking while telling me in front of the customer that they gave him all the beef ribs and have none left for me. I was already pissed off beyond belief at all the other circumstances so I just said to substitute it with pork ribs. He ended up asking if I tried the brisket(which I already ordered, great attention to your customers, again) and put it in my girlfriend's box instead of mine who doesn't eat pork! While this whole shit show was happening, there was a whole line of people waiting to be served who literally came and went because no one was there to take orders at the register as they were in the back the whole time. A patron inside saw my situation and said that at least the food is good so I was excited to try it. It was probably the most mid bbq I've ever tried in my life. The tri-tip and brisket were dry. This place is amazing. The brisket sandwich I got was STACKED, I was not expecting that. I found out they had pork belly, instantly asked for it, and have no regrets. It was delicious. Sauced and tender, with plenty of seasoning but not overly done. The Mac and cheese was good, loved how cheesy it was and the flavor was a not just Mac and cheese but you got a hint of the BBQ in it. The Mac was a bit softer than I like but the flavor made up for it, so I still 100% recommend it. They were pretty quick about getting the food out and they were nice. Found this new gem in town! Boyfriends and I did brisket sandwhich , brisket plate with two sides and a drink and also the Tri tip combo plate with two sides and a drink. Service was top notch. The two gentlemen's in the store were VERY kind. Take out only! We also got the banana pudding dessert and the red velvet dessert and BBQ wise food was AMAZING I had the tri tip was perfection and bf had the brisket and everything was cooked/ smoked to perfection. This one is going to be a tough one I actually had to come out of retirement to actually report this and alert everyone. Especially my fellow Simi valley residents. I seen this spot on my FYP on tik tok so I wanted to try it and support local businesses like i try to do especially in my city of Simi Valley. So we stopped by after church for lunch first of all let me tell you whenever a place is take out only their is always going to be problems because the food always changes on the drive home. Could be the container temp of food being package but theirs all sorts of problems so that should have had been my first red flag. Second red flag agua frescas in a Bbq joint. I guess that's the mex part of their Tex/Mex fusion but let me also tell you their famous sweet tea and lemonade was all gone. Which only tells me one thing they didn't make enough for the rest of the day or they never refilled in the first place. Cause you can't tell me you sell out of Texas tea and lemonade less than 2 hours of opening. Third red flag no desserts out of the four desserts advertised all were sold out which again less than two hours of opening you mean to tell me every dessert you had sold out or didn't make enough but they do have a huge selection of Italian ice/gelato in a mini freezer that's not on the menu. Now that we got the intro stuff out of the way which my gut should have told me to just leave but I truly wanted to give these guys a chance. I ordered two combo plates one with pork ribs which doesn't mention what type cause you got spare or baby back so I got that with their freshly made daily macaroni and cheese and macaroni salad. My second combo was pulled pork with baked beans and potato salad. Oh since they didn't have side meat options to purchase i had to order a tri tip sandwich with no sauce so i can taste the flavors. The spare ribs were ok they weren't drenched in sauce but kinda tough which is kinda normal with that type of rib baby backs usually the meat falls right off the bone but in this case the only thing falling off was my teeth not from the ribs but from all the crunchy hard bits of macaroni in the burnt, flavorless, crunchy cheese crust, definitely not made daily mac and cheese. And the only reason they got one star was not just because we have to choose at least one star but the macaroni salad was actually decent it was fresh and cold and flavored correctly it wasn't dry at all it had everything's macaroni salad needed except a little to much dill juice flavor. The second combo the beans were just sweet mush no smoke flavor no bacon flavor just sweet brown sugar beans that were extra mushy so that means they were probably warmed up left overs from the other day. The potato salad was just fine definitely not as good as the macaroni salad. The pulled pork was more on the drier side wasn't over sauced a little Smokey flavor nothing you couldn't get from a box of del rio frozen carnitas from the market. Something I do gotta mention is that bbq sauce it's original that's for sure but just didn't hit the mark it did make the meats go down easier. Now last but not least the tri tip sandwich I ordered it dry cause a lot of bbq places tend to bathe bbq sandwiches in sauce which is ridiculous so I ordered sauce on the side which made the cashier confused and asked for help. The meat was very dry no juice no smoke rings just a sad coupe of slices which I was grateful for not actually buying a pound of tri tip because I would have been very upset. The service was bad meaning the young lady taking the orders had to continually walk back after taking every order because it seems they don't have a POS system that connects to the back of the house. And as she passes by the food that they bring to the front and just sits their getting cold and changing flavor. One of their head chef Tony comes to the rescue and helps out. While also disassembling. A empty sweet tea and lemonade dispenser but hey theirs plenty of Mexican agua Fresca to go around. This place is obviously new and needs a little more work on timing, food flavoring, and presentation. But that's something I won't be around to see cause I won't be coming back here ever and if I know my fellow residents of simi valley we take our dining experiences very seriously and if we don't like a place you will not survive on just tik toks and IG videos from people they are paying to say their food is great only time will tell if they will make it. But with the new Popeyes and raising canes coming later this year I can see it's going to be a long rough road ahead so enjoy the rush while You have it but the truth will set you free their needs to be major changes and it all starts in the back of the house stop cutting corners and put your money where your mouth is and taste that sad sorry food you call Tex/mex bbq. When we first arrived this place seemed promising. There were a line of people wanting to order. There's no where to dine in, only take out. We got our food and drove off only to find out later they didn't give us any napkins or cutlery. Guess I shouldn't assume that they would provide that in a take out only restaurant. Geez. I ordered the brisket meal with Cole slaw and potato salad, and it comes with spicy pickles. Cole slaw had zero flavor and tasted just like raw cabbage. Potato salad had no flavor either, but was a little better than the cole slaw. Spicy pickles were not spicy at all and felt very limp in texture. Brisket was tender and flavorful however. No smoke ring, but still managed to get some smoke flavor. BBQ sauce wasn't too bad either. My son got the ribs, Mac and cheese, and spicy pickles. Hidden Gem for BBQ in Ventura County! My wife and I made the 45-minute drive out to Tapo Street BBQ after hearing about their beef ribs and brisket. Sometimes the best BBQ spots are the ones tucked away that you have to go out of your way for, and this place definitely fits that description. I'll admit I was a little reluctant at first since most "Texas-style" BBQ in California tends to be overhyped, overpriced, and unfortunately overcooked. Thankfully, this place was nothing like that. Everything was cooked perfectly and priced fairly, which is refreshing, especially in today's economy. Entrées: We ordered the two-bone beef ribs along with 1/4 lb of brisket. The beef ribs were easily the highlight of the meal. Large, meaty, and packed with smoky flavor with a great bark. They were tender without falling apart and clearly smoked with care. The brisket was also well done, juicy with a solid smoke ring and rich flavor that paired perfectly with the ribs. Sides: For sides we went with macaroni salad, pickles, mac and cheese, and baked beans. The mac and cheese and baked beans complemented the meats nicely, while the pickles and macaroni salad helped balance out the richness of the BBQ. Seating: The only downside we noticed was the seating situation. There isn't dedicated indoor or outdoor seating available. There's a nearby bench, but it's open to the public and not exclusive to the restaurant, which can make it a little tricky if you're hoping to sit down and enjoy your meal. Overall: Despite the limited seating, the food alone makes the trip worth it. Tapo Street BBQ is truly a hidden gem serving up quality smoked meats. Ordered a pastrami sandwich and a side of mac and cheese. The service was friendly and welcoming. The pastrami sandwich bread was so hard that my boyfriend took it off. The pastrami itself was good, but SPICY MAC AND CHEESE, seriously? Mac and cheese does not need to be spicy! Especially if you're cooking for masses! I was just so hoping for creamy goodness, but was sadly disappointed. I lived in Texas and none of the barbecue joints that I visited (and were delicious), had spicy food! I always say that you can add spice to your food, but you can't take it out. I want to go back for the brisket, so hopefully soon I can update and improve my review. read more

As Simi Valley residents my partner and I try to support our local businesses first, but we will not return. Sides are definitely not made fresh every day. Mac & Cheese had zero flavor, crunchy old noodles and fell apart. BBQ beans were oddly sweet and very mushy. Coleslaw had zero seasoning, it was shredded cabbage and a watery mayo. I don't even know what those "pickles" were. Chopped chunks of cucumber. Potato salad was ok. Mac salad was honestly the only good side we tried. Meats were average and dry. I didn't care for the BBQ sauce. They were out of iced tea only an hour after opening which probably means they didn't have any to begin with. Zero desserts listed on the menu in stock (cobbler, banana pudding,etc.) but some gelato not even on the menu. Overall, it was an expensive, disappointing experience. read more
