A landmark for history, bbq and log cabin vibes. If you're looking for a nice bbq spot I can't…read morerecommend this place enough. I've had Pappy's in STL (Saint Louis, MO) and their ribs there are incredible. While this isn't as incredible as Pappy's, it is the best in Los Angeles. I've grown up eating ribs and not all ribs are created equal. These ribs are definitely one of the spots you must try. In no particular order: Baby back ribs 10/10 Smoked pork spare ribs 8.5/10 Chicken 10/10 Garlic bread 10/10 (comes with some of the dinner combinations) Beans 8/10 Coleslaw 10/10 Potato salad 9/10 Tots 8.5/10 We had dinner and so there were dinner combinations to choose from. My husband got the full rack of baby back ribs with three sides and garlic bread. I ordered the half rack of smoked spare ribs and two pieces of dark chicken, mine also came with three sides and garlic bread. There was so much food we couldn't finish nearly half of the portions, naturally we took it home. As we left the parking lot we saw their stash of natural wood. Who knows how and where they smoke their ribs, could be an indoor Santa Maria set up, I've seen those in some restaurants. They're ovens that you lower the meat into, very expensive. I'd be curious to ask the owner next time if they can share with us their bbq set up. Service is welcoming, helpful and efficient. New owner since 2019, they have helped restored the main neon sign. Hard working family who recognizes the value of this restaurant's history and recipes. They have stuck to all the same recipes from the former owners. There are murals all over the restaurant and they're made by Disney animators from 1954, but the back room was my favorite. Seating is lovely throughout the restaurant. Glad we finally got to try this Los Angeles gem. Prices are fair in my opinion for bbq. Factor in the quality, volume of food, and dining experience and I think it's reasonable.

There were Christmas lights in the entry and it is April. My friend said it looked like his venue had been attacked by one of the bears! And then there was the food. The ribs were OK but covered in a very sweet sauce. I guess that's the style but wasn't what I was expecting and was way too sweet. The barbecue baked beans looked and tasted like they came out of a can. When it came time to pay, I was charged a 3% service charge. The cashier said it was a new charge from the bank. I don't think this is correct. I think it's that they were passing on the fee of free using credit cards to the customers. If this was a low price place, I might accept it, but it's not and they should not do that. It is just a cost of doing business. To and on a positive note, the service was friendly and good

I've been hesitant because it is in a trickier area, but I had no issues pulling in or parking! They have a few spots in the front, but otherwise I'm sure there is parking around the neighborhood. You walk inside to order and it is not a fancy looking place, but the people cooking the meat definitely know what they're doing!! It felt like an authentic Texas bbq spot. I didn't want the frills, I just wanted good food and that's what I got. I sat at a little table outside which was perfectly pleasant! The road wasn't too loud or anything. But really, the sandwich was SO good. I doused it in the spicy bbq and added the pickles and coleslaw and I ate the WHOLE thing. I shouldn't have. But it was great!! I want to come back and try their other bbq meats and sides!! I loved the pulled pork sandwich and would recommend sharing it if you do order it. Yum!! The service was great, too!!

The accurate rain forecast changed our Sunday adventuring plans, but considering the food we were…read moregoing to get into, BBQ felt like a sensible substitute. We hadn't visited since February, 2020. Before the pandemic might as well have been 10 years ago, if the world shut down 6 years ago. We were overdue for a followup visit. Judging by how the food went down, we were sore for it. We ordered the Big Tex: four meats and four sides - tri-tip, brisket, pulled pork and links; kale greens, bbq beans, mac and cheese and fries. We opted for the cornbread in the roll slot. It should be the top meats in your order, by premium scale and availability, but more often than they should be, the brisket/tri-tip selections are, 90%, obligatory orders. I think I have a love/hate relationship with the way LA treats the pepperoni pizza of bbq meats. Swinging Door broke us off proper though. Not too fatty. Great tenderism. And the accompanying sauce complemented the smoked all stars, rather than compensated for lack of flavor. Didn't stop me from loving their Whiskey bbq sauce though. The beans were a true bbq side, swimming in a mild sauce and containing lovely chunks of link. And the kale greens - sheesh - I think they might've switched to kale since our first visit. An effective exercise in alternative ruffage that holds seasoning and jucies for a similar bbq/soulfoud bite. We live further away now. Took the food to go, to prevent the intermittent rain from foiling more of our plans. It traveled well. And since I'm using our leftover bbq sauce on every other meal I cook, I'd say we successfully made do with our lunch substitute.

(At a rib joint, the nerve) but it wasn't my plate so oh well. First note this is a pick up spot only there is an ordering counter that no more than 4 people can be in at a time. The street is super dark and desolate looking it feels like an industrial area think City of Industry. There's no parking well there's one spot to park for pick up. The street parking is filled with what looked like broken down type cars the four I seen had chalk writing like tow yards do. To the food!!! Ordered 2 two meat meals that come with 2 sides. Not a piece of bread or muffin was included. Please notice the dry @$$ pulled pork? and I got 4 pieces of a rib tip that was the same as 1 maybe 2 real tips ANYWHERE else.the tips were chopped into 2-4 pieces from one full tip. So I really feel cheated and I was frigging hungry -hungry. The pork was dry and couldn't be swallowed without the bbq sauce and drink. She ordered a hot link with ribs and added a side of ribs for an additional $24. The sides came in a small container I had Mac n cheese and greens which every bite I was like wish I had cornbread to add to these greens. While she had greens and the sweet potato (which by the way was the best thing they had going on) the Mac was average I'm about to reheat and toast again before I hit send for this review. Reheated the side of ribs, greens and Mac and it's a bit better than the pulled pork, but this definitely isn't a bbq spot I'd advise anyone to go to nor would I dare try without bbq sauce and a lot of it. Dessert banana pudding last time I was here the desserts were pretty good. This tasted like the yoplait whips yogurts consistency and like knock of Nila wafers I was just sooo utterly disappointed.

Unfortunately, it was another disappointment. To be fair, they were busy, and I understand that a full restaurant can put pressure on both the kitchen and the front-of-house staff. But being busy should never be an excuse for poor food quality, inconsistent service, or a lack of standards. We ordered the beef ribs, pork spareribs, and brisket. The portions were definitely generous, but the quality was simply not there. The brisket looked like it had been pre-sliced and left sitting in a pool of grease and juices. (as I asked the Server she did confirm this was true. ) It fell apart, yes, but not in the way great brisket should. It lacked the richness, balance, and true smoked flavor that good barbecue is known for. Instead of tasting freshly sliced and properly held, it felt tired and over-rested. The beef ribs were tough, and the pork spareribs were extremely dry almost like chewing on cardboard. That was probably the most disappointing part of the meal. For a place that has built its identity around barbecue, there was very little real smoke flavor in the meats. That alone says a lot. The barbecue sauce had decent flavor, although it was a bit runny for my taste. The barbecue beans, on the other hand, were actually delicious and one of the few highlights of the meal. Then there was the bread. We were told it was "half a loaf," but it was really just a very small piece, closer to the size of a bun. On top of that, the bottom was soggy, like it had been sitting too long on a steam table or in trapped moisture. The service was slow. The girls working were clearly busy and trying, but it did not feel like anyone was guiding them with real standards of service or hospitality. There is a difference between being overwhelmed and being untrained, and this felt more like a lack of leadership and structure. I also asked to speak with the chef. One server told me she would go get him and that he was there. Then another server said he was not there. That kind of inconsistency only added to the frustration and made the whole experience feel even less professional. I respect that this restaurant has been around since 1969, and longevity does mean something. But being around a long time does not automatically make a place great. In my opinion, they should not be pushing the idea that they are among the best barbecue spots in the country, because based on this experience, that is nowhere near reality. This is not even close to the quality standard of a true Texas barbecue spot. I was also disappointed by the overall condition and cleanliness of the property. I understand the idea of maintaining an old-school feel, but there is a line between rustic charm and an environment that simply does not feel sanitary or well-kept. To me, it felt like the latter. What makes this experience especially disappointing is that they clearly have the history, the name, and likely the resources to do much better. I do not mind paying for quality, but I do mind paying for quantity when the quality is missing. That is exactly what this felt like. I sincerely wish them continued success, but we will not be coming back.

The friendly duo of ladies (I'm assuming they were the titular Nia & Jags) greeted me with smiles and friendly conversation, and quickly served up the sample I was meant to get as part of my package "Passport Deal." This was a small bite of Cuban pulled pork on a bed of pita chips. The pork was tender and very juicy without being fatty at all. Yes, the meat was juicy and lean, so these folks must be doing something right in the kitchen. The flavor itself was distinctly Cuban, with Caribbean spices and a bright, citrusy burst that provided a welcome contrast to the rest of the American-style smoked meats at the festival. The pita chips, while not homemade, also provided a welcome change from the standard breads and tortillas served at the other booths. Though I didn't get to sample the rest of their wares, now that I'm well-aware of their names, I'll be looking for Nia & Jags at other events so I can taste what else they're cooking up...
