I used to love going to The Hat whenever i needed a pastrami fix - no other place would do. Sadly, after a couple decades as a loyal customer (and after telling many others that The Hat was the best), i will be searching for a replacement favorite pastrami spot. I have been a long time patron of The Hat at their various L.A. locations, and my last 3 visit have been disappointing. No longer did i get the hefty sized sandwich with juicy pastrami falling out the sides as you lift to eat it. So much pastrami meat you had to be sure to grab a plastic fork from the counter because you would need it to eat all the extra pastrami that fell out. Instead i got served something the sized I'd expect at "Mr. Ordinary's Burger Stand". Nothing to see here folks, move along. Walk up to the window and a whole bunch of employees are crammed into that tiny 3 foot by 9 foot space working really hard. Order your food at one window and pick it up at the next. Somebody told me to try gravy fries with onions..cheese..and pastrami on top. Well I watched them build this huge colossal mountain of food...with my eyes glued to their every move.. The Pastrami Dip has a TON of pastrami packed in it; it is going to be messy for you to eat, since the excess meat is going to keep falling out of your sandwich. There aren't too many veggies with your sandwich, but honestly, if you're at The Hat, you've made a decision to not have a healthy meal. Beyond its abundance, the pastrami tastes great; it's fatty, peppery, and greasy (in a good way). Of course, since it is a Pastrami Dip, the sandwich is super drenched with au jus (it is not on the side, though you can get it as a side, too). It makes the sandwich super juicy to eat, and I suppose that adds to the messiness of eating it, too. Overall, it's not mind-blowing, but it's definitely a satisfying meal! There are many other menu items at The Hat that are also of interest, including the Pastrami Burger. I've had that once, and while it tasted great, it was probably too much food for me. The food is always hot, flavorful and fresh. I would recommend getting the fries well done, as they can sometimes be undercooked or a little old, meaning they have lost their fried crunchiness. Line looked like it was going to be long but after ordering we received our order somewhere between 5-10 minutes. Pastrami dip sandwich was okay. An expensive sandwich for what it is.
